Ha Ha Clinton-Dix traded to Washington

The veteran safety is on the move prior to becoming a free agent this spring.

Shortly after sending Ty Montgomery to Baltimore, Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst sends Ha Ha Clinton-Dix to Washington.

The Packers were also apparently interested in Jaguars pass rusher Dante Fowler prior to his being traded to the Rams:

Can't say I love or hate it until we know what Gute got in return. But this certainly isn't a win-now move, so I'm hoping there's a big acquisition before 3... like the nelson/graham announcement, except I'd prefer a player that actually contributes

A 4th rounder seems like a poor return. I'm all for trading away guys that are going to walk in FA in the right situations, but this doesn't seem like the type of return that justifies exposing the defense to this kind of risk. Brice has been terrible and the guys filling in are going to be out of their natural position.

Feels like a move from a GM that doesn't believe the team is a competitor this year.

GB had worst secondary last 2 years. Everyone is FINALLY gone per my suggestion last year. Jaire Alexander looks like Dion Sanders JR & Jackson, King Tramon & company are playing well. Secondary is a strength with or without HAHA. He is no Nick Collins, Leroy Butler Irv Comp or Willie Wood. Don’t sleep on Breeland- Tony Brown from Alabama, Josh Jones & Raven Greene - who showed promise in camp.

Did I mention Jaire Alexander?

I agree. A 4th round pick for Dix - a 1st rounder? Why trade him? Let him walk after this year and at least we get his production until then. What are the odds we will get much if any production out of a 4th round pick?

The Safety position has been weak since we let Morgan Burnett go. Now, it has become even weaker. IMO this is a bad trade.

Point/baru - he's ranked #4 by PFF lmao. Yeah "he's not a good safety." You guys should actually watch football once in a while and not base your opinions of a player's skills on comments they make to reporters.

PFF is garbage... go watch Andy Herman's article on this site about Dix's lack of effort... he was playing not to get hurt and wasn't hustling to the ball. There are a bunch of egregious plays where players got more yards and first downs because of his lack of hustle.

I'd rather have a player out there making mistakes by being aggressive then playing for himself and taking plays off.

How soon you forget Nitschke. Gute traded Randall for Kizer and traded Hindley for a pick. This is at least his 4th trade in his 1st year. Good for Gute. So far Alexander and 2 of the 3 rookie WRs are all looking like studs. The more picks Gute can shed that were TT's and replace them with his own the better.

Edit: Lenzy Pikins trade was the one I forgot.

I'm thinking Jackson might make a pro bowl caliber safety with his ball skills and ability to read QB's. If he can tackle and cover open ground he might be the man to put at FS. Breeland has proven he can play CB so maybe keep him there? At 6'0 200lbs Jackson has the size to play FS. Can you imagine him hawking center field like an Earl Thomas or Ed Reed? He has the potential.

I like his ball skills too, but I wish he had a little more on the top to better cover the field.

However, if he is assignment sure and has a knack for anticipation, that will go a long way to make up for the lack of elite speed.

They have candidates to potentially fill his spot.

Josh Jackson, Jermaine Whitehead, Josh Jones, Raven Greene, or perhaps Tramon Williams.

I don't suspect they'd try Kevin King, Bashaud Breeland, or Tony Brown in a safety position.

My initial thought is that they may move Josh Jones into the hybrid ILB role that Whitehead has played while moving Whitehead into HHCD's starting role, but we'll have to wait and see what they announce or end up showing during the Patriots game.

Yeah I agree.

I could see Williams to a safety role.
He has lost a step as a CB. While still good he can't keep up with the young fast WR's. Moving him to S and having Breeland playing CB could be an upgrade really.

I'm really curious to what they will do.
With the game that Josh Jones played on Special Teams perhaps they feel really good about him and want him to play on defense more?

Maybe this is a simple fact they think the future is Jones and Clinton-Dix was in the way?

My initial thought is they will go with a rotation of players. Certain schemes/packages they will use Jones, others they will bring in Breeland and move Williams to S?

I bet we won't find out until the start of the game.

I agree RC. I didn't think they would trade Dix because I thought to do so would be saying they are playing for next year. Maybe the Ty fumble and the loss could have been the last straw and Gute said F it. We'll never know if Dix would still be here today if they won. Either way I was wrong on this trade and the author who wrote about the possible trade last week ( can't remember who it was) was right.

Maybe it is Josh Jones, Breeland, Whitehead, or Tramon who takes over. I love the way this defense is starting to gel. I do get the feeling they know exactly what they are doing. This isn't some hope and change here.

I didn't think they would trade Dix either. Or trade Ty, shows what I know(HA). Still IAMGUTE is operating from the Ron Wolf-Ted Thompson play book. Sign veteran talent for value and stock up on draft choices. Teams can never have enough, more increases the odds on hitting. In both cases making lemonade out of lemons.

No hesitation. I wasn't sold on Gute until today. The Patriots are like that and now we have someone on GB that does it. As you said, lots of lemonade will be produced from this down the road.

If Josh Jones doesn't get PT now it will send a clear message as to how they feel about his play.

As far as Ha Ha, someone awhile ago posted about how he couldn't recall in the roughly 41/2 years of play ever seeing him break-up passes or lay hard-licks on a receiver. I'm sure he has, but it seems few and far between.

He had a nice pick this season against Washington but almost every other one has been on overthrows or crap passes. It's not like he's swooping in front of receivers or making leaping stabs at contested balls either.

I know the idiom deeper than the deepest as it applies to safeties, but I don't know how many times I observed him back peddling out of the picture prior to the snap, not to be seen again until jogging to the pile.

And as much grief as Brice received for not covering deep passes, where was the criticism for HHCD? Isn't he supposed to contest and break-up deep passes too?

To the bad angles, so-so tackling, avoiding contact, not making plays on passes and the unique ability to go under camouflage in front of 70,000 people and a TV audience, I say meh to Ha Ha. We can do better.

He's a bit of a problem from what I've heard and he'd more than likely walk after this season.... Guteukunst got what he could and probably the same thing (maybe better) than the comp pick they'd get. PLUS he'll get this pick no matter what, Comp pick even out these days in GB since Gute actually is active in FA.

IMO this trade was made the moment HHCD opened his mouth about his future with the Packers earlier in the year. Excellent work by Gute IMO.

What are you basing Breeland not being serviceable on? He was a good CB for the Redskins and we've seen cornerbacks transition to safety before. Breeland just joined the Packers and has to learn Pettine's defense. Tramon Williams has played safety for Pettine before. How is the season over the Packers just went toe to toe with the Rams on their turf. Gute is shedding TT's draft picks and cashed in for HaHa in his prime good for him.

Whether you think this is good value or not, I'm encouraged about the ruthlessness of Gute, something this franchise has needed for some time. Players who have expressed discontent or questioned their future are being moved on for whatever we can get for them. The safety market is pretty depressed right now so I dont think this is a bad deal personally.

I wasnt as down on HHCD as alot of fans seemed to be but I understand that this is a draft and develop team and the more draft capital we have, the better. That 4th could be packaged for to move up. This roster needs upheaval and that starts with the draft. The current rookie group has me hopeful about Gute's drafting. I have faith and I'm impressed that he's taking bold decisions for what he sees as the good of the franchise.

So who's left from the TT era? This is going to Gute's team moving forward. Was hoping to pick up an edge rusher, looks like it's coming in the draft. 4: 23 deadline is past.

TT era players list:

Aaron Rodgers
Randall Cobb & Davante Adams
Fackrell
CM3
Reggie Gilbert
Nick Perry
Josh Jones
Kevin King
Our entire OL Taylor, Bahktiari, Bulaga, Linsley, McCray
Bell is Gute's "big addition" and he sucks
Our entire DL Clark, Daniels, Lowry, Adam's
Wilkerson was Gute's "big addition" and he's on IR
Aaron Jones & William's
Brice
You could claim Tramon Williams either way
Blake Martinez

Still quite a bit of TT's players on this team but I expect CM3 and Cobb to be gone after 2018.

And the Pack got 4.5 years of play from him. That's longer than the average NFL career.

Do we wish we got more from that 1st round, of course. But I remember that draft and guys who were thought to be high on the Packer's wish list were getting picked ahead of Ha Ha. So when their turn came up he was their highest rated guy.

The Rams reportedly outbid the New York Jets and Green Bay Packers for Fowler's services just 30 minutes before Tuesday's trade deadline, Rapoport added. The Jaguars were initially asking for at least a second-round pick and change for their former high selection.

Agree with the move. This is 2nd best case scenario.
Best case have been to get a player for him now to fill a holem Otherwise, HHCD leaving in FA is a 5th round comp pick. Interesting to see the safety rotation as Pettine likes 3 safety looks. Jones will likely get an opportunity.

Given how soft the safety market was this year, they probably weren't going to get much of a comp pick, if any depending on what they do in FA in the offseason. A fourth rounder is as good as you could hope for. Lots of good young talent in the DB room still there. He has some veteran experience, but his performance has been up and down this year. Good for Gute, clearing out a couple of possible distractions in HaHa and Monty.

Best day as a Packer fan in a while. Gute got as much as he could for HHCD and Montgomery (surprised he got anything for Montgomery) and sent a much needed message to the rest of the team. Gute wants disciplined players who want to be Packers and will remove those who don't fit the mold. If you are old enough, that message sounds awfully familiar - think Vince Lombardi.....

I'm not thrilled we spent a 1st rd pick and got a 4th rounder in return, but I doubt we would've gotten the same comp. pick had we let him go. We can't have a player like Clinton-Dix bitching in the locker room and playing erratically like he did.

The safety market last year was pretty soft and I'm not sure it'll be that great in 2019 free agency.

Let's see Clinton-Dix for what he was: a talented, but inconsistent player who wasn't shy about complaining, even prior to this year. His tackling was poor and he was a bad influence on our young guys.

It's basically a 9 game rental for the Redskins. If he tanks, then the Redskins just gave up a 4th rounder for nothing. How funny would it be if we wound up playing the Skins in a wildcard game?

So much for draft and develop....more like draft and let go:

2011: Derrek Sherrod
2012: Nick Perry
2013: Datone Jones
2014: Haha Clinton-Dix
2015: Damarious Randall
2016: Kenny Clark

Good grief! You'd think this was a list from the Browns or something.

The fun twist would be if we found out it was HaHa that leaked his thoughts about Ty Montgomery to the press on Sunday.

Anyways, not sure I like the move. I'm not a huge HaHa fan but if we've got better tools at FS I'd like to think we would have been using them. HaHa hasn't been great this year but overall, he hasn't been a liability, either.

I'm hoping we see Tramon Williams out there. I have some faith in him. I can not say the same about Josh Jones at this time, based on his coverage from last season and the fact he's having such a hard time finding the field- especially in light of how iffy our SS play has been in 2018.

Hope this doesn't weaken the team in 2018. It's the right move for the future, though. Did not want to see HaHa resigned.

I think if our record was a little better, hell if we would have won on Sunday, Ha Ha would still be a Packer. With that said, with his less than stellar play and our CBs stepping up, I think we can cover the safety group with the bunch we got.

My bigger worry is the piss poor play calling by McCarthy and not being able to adjust on the damn crossing routes over the middle. That's not a lack of athleticism by our LBs or Safety, that's called no one is there or within 15 yds of them.

The edge group went from bad to fair-to-middling against the Rams. Fackrell actually beat a pro-bowl tackle with a speed rush! Clay moved around, and had a decent game. I even heard Reggie Gilbert's name mentioned. I wonder who else they were looking at besides Fowler - a few other names were thrown around. In contrast, the safety group did not improve. I think it will be Tramon and Whitehead starting, with Jones at dime, and Greene/Jackson/Breeland as potential rotation guys. They have to be better than Dix/Brice.

Fackrell appears to be a guy that has made that jump with the added playing time. Taryn initially was the only person right about him but she was a year off. For some reason he's starting to make an impact in Pettine's new system. He's making impact plays in almost every game now. That's good because the other three have been disappointments.

Never a Ha Ha fan so good riddance. I wouldn't have given up a 3rd for Fowler for an 8 game rental so that was good too. But there were a lot of good players on the market at safety and edge that likely would have been cheaper than Fowler. I'm hoping Gute doesn't over value draft picks the way TT did. If a fourth or fifth could have gotten Landon Collins or a decent edge I would have jumped at it. We're still in the hunt for the NFC north. Ridding ourselves of Ha Ha and Ty is fine. But why no additions at obvious positions of need?

I know Dix wasn't great but he was probably the best of a weak group safeties. While I don't blame Gute for trying to get something for Dix I also think we are probably weaker at safety than we were yesterday. My guess is that Gute just doesn't see this team as being a legit contender and he may as well look to 2019. I think he may be correct.

A 4th rounder for the #4 ranked safety?...lolololololol duh-duhduh-duh-dumb. Just dumb.

So now there is a void at a vital position in the secondary AND the need for a pass rusher still isn't addressed. This just was not a smart move at all. I'm all for shipping out Monty after his blatant FU...but to get nothing in return other than hope in the 4th round for a guy who was playing at a high level is too much of a gamble. Not to mention GB just made another NFC playoff contender even stronger. At least ship him to the AFC. 2018 is officially dead. Here's to hoping for a top 10 pick....

Exactly. Was he Earl Thomas? No not even close but he was average at worst and good at best and he’s probably the only player not just on def but the whole team that can say he started every game from 2015 until last Sunday. Now everyone is suddenly looking forward to Whitehead who is average at best, Brice who is terrible, and Jones who despite his size and speed got beat out by Brice and has been on special teams. I just hope they either sign a quality safety or draft a good one since they missed out on Fitzpatrick I’m not sure people understand how difficult it is to find a quality FS. It took the Packers 3 years after Collins retired and that meant (gulp) Charlie Peprah, MD Jennings(gasp), Jerron McMillian and Chris Banjo!

Not sure how I feel about this move..... if anything, it shows that we won’t be in a “Nick Perry situation” down the road (paying someone simply due to the fact that no one else is really available).

Is the depth good enough to make this trade, or are we planning on moving Tramon back to safety?

Time will tell, but give Gute the credit for being pretty ballsy here at the very least...

Eg - You're right. I'm sure all the expert analysts making the big bucks are wrong lol. He was playing his ass off this year. Rarely out of position. Coming up and making tackles on RBs. Rarely got burned or even let a WR get behind the coverage on his side of the field. I think you're confusing HHCD for Brice.

All you naysayers are going to quickly see how hard its going to be to fill the void.

I don’t care what PFF and all the stats nerds say, I watched him and he stinks. He is not a good safety. He hovers around the edge of the action and picks off tipped balls and overthrows. Once or twice a season he makes a splash play and the stats nerds go wild. The rest of the time he plays chicken football, making sure he doesn’t get hurt and miss out on his big payday. Good riddance. Replace him with a JAG off the street, it will be an improvement.

ROFL @ those who think TWill is a viable replacement option for HHCD. TWill is a dinosaur. He simply doesn't have the range or speed necessary to play FS in today's league of 4.3 WRs. He's been burned more times this year than the weed in my bowl. Same goes for Brice. He can't cover. He can't locate the ball in the air. He rarely comes up to make tackles - his tackles come from chasing down the guy that just got behind him in coverage lol.

Meanwhile HHCD was playing his ass off this year under Pettine - who cares about last year? What does last year have to do with THIS year? If GB had a better option he would have been on the field already. This move just seriously weakened the secondary with nothing in return and failed to address a need at the same time. It's not very likely a 4th rounder is going to bring much value. Jumping from CB to FS is no easy task - you can't just put any body back there and expect them to be good. People should really watch the tapes and not base opinions off comments they read a player make or what they did in previous years.

If you play tentative as a safety you shouldn't be a safety! Ha Ha rarely committed and was often found in limbo! You have to commit and let the chips fall. He didn't have the speed to catch up and he rarely made a player pay for coming in his territory! I wish him all the best, but we need someone who shows he wants the position and plays like it!
