Game-Changing Play of the Week: Watson Drop a Prelude to Packers' Woes

Christian Watson's drop reverberates throughout the game.

Over the week to come there will be a lot of discussion over what went wrong for the Green Bay Packers in Minnesota on Sunday afternoon. I certainly will have plenty to say about the subject in Hello Wisconsin on Thursday.

But it seemed to me that one of the many reasons the Packers struggled so mightily was a lack of trust in some of their young players. And the huge drop by Christian Watson on the team's first offensive play of the game was emblematic of that larger issue.

For that reason, this first-quarter flub is the game-changing play of the week.

The play

You couldn't ask for a better look on your first NFL passing route than what Christian Watson got on the Packers' first play from scrimmage.

Watson easily blew past his man and had an absolutely perfect ball from Aaron Rodgers heading toward him. All he had to do was haul it in and jog to the endzone for a major, statement-making strike that would have tied the ballgame.

Instead, Watson got alligator arms and flubbed a massive opportunity.

Now, this is going to happen. Watson is a rookie who had very limited time to play in training camp and the preseason. It was a huge moment and is not indicative at all of who he will be or can be as an NFL receiver.

No--what changed the game was the way Aaron Rodgers responded to it.

Rodgers' look to the sideline after the pass was, as our own Jersey Al remarked on Twitter afterwards, something aking to a "See? I told you" sort of look.

Rodgers is famously tough on his young receivers and has developed a reputation for being unwilling to throw the ball their way, or for insisting young players be taken out of the game when they make a mistake. When Watson dropped his pass, many of us joked on Twitter afterwards that it would be weeks before Watson saw another ball come his way.

While there were a couple more times in the game that Watson touched the ball, he very clearly was not a part of the game plan after that, whether by design or due to Rodgers' own preferences for throwing to his veteran friends.

This was likely compounded even more by the fact that Romeo Doubs ran a wrong route just two plays afterwards. Two rookies making two mistakes within three plays.

Through much of the rest off the game, Aaron Rodgers held on to the ball for far too long. While there were many protection issues (we'll get to that in a moment), there were also plenty of circumstances in which Rodgers did himselves and his linemen no favors, attempting to play 2018-style hero ball.

There were some who worried this could be an issue without Davante Adams present as Rodgers' security blanket. But if the Packers' offense is going to succeed this year, Rodgers is going to have to trust the young guys and the game plan put together by his coaches.

If Watson catches this pass, maybe Rodgers isn't so quick to give up on him or get frustrated, and maybe the Packers' offense stays in better sync for the first half and beyond.

_______

Now all that being said, the distrust of the young guys seems to be something of an institutional issue. Any idiot could have told you before the game that starting Jake Hanson at right guard would lead to disaster. I don't care how thin the Packers' offensive line is at the moment; one could make an argument that Hanson doesn't belong on an NFL roster, let alone starting an important game on the road against a divisional rival with an excellent pass rush.

Most reaosnable people would have called for the Packers to start impressive rookie Zach Tom at right tackle and kick Royce Newman to his typical inside position at right guard. Instead, Matt LaFleur and company chose for the second meaningful game in a row NOT to use their best five available offensive linemen, for reasons at which I can barely hazard a guess.

Note, then, how when Tom eventually entered the game in relief of an injured Jon Runyan, Jr., the Packers ran behind him twice almost immediately for large gains.

For the Packers to succeed, they must trust the roster decisions they've made and accept the fact that their young players are going to have to be allowed to grow up quickly. This roster has plenty of areas of strength, but there are also thin spots in which the youth will need to be thrown into the fire immediately. And when it comes to the wide receivers, if Aaron Rodgers doesn't like it, he can continue to hurt his team by refusing to acknowledge his entire route tree, and accept that he is handicapping his team's chances at a championship.

Let's just begin the Jordan Love era and then let's just see what kind of faces and gesticulations rodgers makes from the sideline.

I know, I know... THAT's not going to happen, but hey, can't a guy dream?

I would never say that I dream of a Packer's era w/o ARod, he's been THE GUY for all of my serious football watching years and I remember the relief I felt when he took over for Favre and I didn't have to peek b/w my fingers with every pass to see if it was going to be intercepted or not. But, with that being said, I sure would like to see him trying to bring a little more positive energy to the sideline.

Rarescope, I have watched Bart Starr, a parade of Bozo's up to Lynn Dickey, followed by more clowns up to the short bright flame of the Majic Man to Favre and rodgers.

I can readily imagine the Jordan Love era.

I only wish it would start this season.

Be careful what you wish for. Did you see the dazed gaze after that stripsack? He's old, he's had concussions in the past, and that was a pretty hard shot. A lot harder shot than the one that knocked out Dak Prescott.

IMO, Chicago put some hard shots on the QB last week. If Rodgers is going to take a pounding like this every week, he's going to have a short season.

Right and that’s why I’ve always thought that if you have one of the great QBs in the game protecting them should be job number one. Sadly we have a supposedly great oline on paper that just hasn’t been able to stay healthy. One can’t help but wonder how different things would be if Bahk and Jenkins had not been injured.

I understand that confidence and momentum are important for a team, but after all the talk in preseason about the Offense being fine, the Defense being Top 5, and SPTs still trying to find itself, there is no way I would suggest or accept that the first play pass drop by Watson impacted the rest of the game plan so deeply that it was simply tossed aside, and a loss was immediately accepted as being so.

No, this team wasn't game ready in so many areas, it was a nightmare from the moment the Vikings went down the field like a hot knife through butter on a picnic on a 110 degree summer day. What the Packers did and didn't do after that dropped pass seemed to be a game plan developed for the destiny that prevailed. Yes, the drop was a bucket of cold water, but if the drop was all it took to undo the Packers, I'd expect another next week against the Bears.

A win next week won't erase the issues of this week, a loss will certainly lend more credence to those issues, but these issues aren't issues that just appeared, they've been seen for a while under the leadership of MLF and Rodgers. You're just kidding yourself if you deny what's been around for the last three years. Not a slice of the pie, but the whole pie.

Completely agree. Yes Watson dropped the pass. He also blew past a really good corner as easily as I've ever seen. Why NOT throw to him again? He gets open.

Rodgers and LaFleur have their shtick; Rodgers and the phony trust issue that has inhibited the Packers for years and made his tunnel vision predictable and easily defended at crucial moments.

And LaFleur, who doesn't seem to be watching the same game as the rest of the world. Glaring problems are player problems instead of coaching idiocies. Not starting Yosh last year, starting Hanson this game, and not having Jaire on Jefferson, is unbelievably stupid. Those calls were huge, and not a single Packer fan I know agreed with any of them. So what game is he watching, or if he is, what does that say about his judgment? If the guy calling the shots is too blind to see what's in front of him, there's no hope.

Shrewd take on Coach Matt, Johnny. Do we know who made the call on the starting OL for the 49ers game. Steno was held out as a genius all season for his decisions and coaching. Then, THAT decision, and when it was clear it was not the best choice nothing changed. Who made that call?

We also haven't discussed if the right guy ascended to the OC job. It's early, yes, but you have highlighted a pattern those at the helm can't see despite its size.

"Rodgers and LaFleur have their shtick; Rodgers and the phony trust issue that has inhibited the Packers for years and made his tunnel vision predictable and easily defended at crucial moments."

THAT is the problem. Lafleur like MM is just hoping it works out. It won't. I love the team and hope they have the pride to over come this, but unfortunately I've seen this too long to trust THEM. Last year was a bookend of 2 inexplicable losses, and with this start, It's all just a pipe dream until I see something different.

As for Rodgers I have no faith in him at all anymore. His stubbornness is baffling and the only explanation I see is that he is only driven by..... Hell I don't know! None of this makes any sense . Does it do any good to roll his eyes make his point that I told you so in his body language. I don't think trust is a phony issue. If a receiver goes inside instead of out or something like that, the timed throw is too easily intercepted. A receiver who lets the ball go through his hands is another turnover risk. Turnovers win and lose football games and one reason the Pack has won far more than they have lost with Rodgers is the lack of interceptions. (Fumbles from hanging onto the ball too long is another matter.) But ARod is the best at threading balls into impossibly small spaces and his receiver needs to be right at that spot, he needs to be trusted/expected, call it what you want, to be right at that spot.

You're right of course, trust is very important, but when it reaches the levels it often does with Rodgers it can be defeating. He prides himself on being a total professional and demands that from everyone. He wants his players to be great. Well, not everyone is as great a football player as he is.

Reminds of all those baseball managers who were great players once, but lousy managers. Ted Williams, Eddie Mathews... Stan Musial was watching a rookie in the batting cage one day during batting practice and the kid was destroying the ball. As he exchanged places with Musial the kid said I feel like I can go 5 for 5 today. Stan said, "I feel like that every day." That's Rodgers, he feels like a Hall of Famer every day and has no tolerance for lesser lights.

I believe Rodgers is aging before our eyes. He's a better athlete than Brady but watching Brady move around in the pocket and pick out open receivers to move the chains is a thing of beauty. He just gets it done. Rodgers, meanwhile, seems to always be looking to show off how dazzling he can be. Leave the pocket, run around, make a brilliant throw. It's an ego thing. In case you didn't know, Aaron Rodgers has an enormous ego. When his ego isn't being massaged, he pouts. That's what he did against the Vikings. A Lombardi would have chewed his ass out. A LaFleur takes the blame on himself. Rodgers won't change. LaFleur better.

These issues predate Lafleur tho. New boss, same rogue quarterback. Oline is hurt? All new receivers that he doesnt trust? I got it! Lets pass twice as much as we run!! Brilliant!!! I know thats not on Lafleur cuz he wants to run the ball. Gutekunst wants to run the ball. Stenavich wants to run the ball. Rodgers does not want to run the ball. Pretty hard to win when the face of the franchise is on one page and literally the rest of the franchise is on another page. Still dont know why they brought him back. Jordan Love couldve gotten 7 points at $48 million dollars cheaper.

Yet; Wasn't it obvious they needed to throw at his left hand? And then move him behind Jordy Nelson.
It did pay off. He responded with the best moves, and quickness, ever by a packer WR.
How can we give up on any of these kids after Devante Adams?

We don’t need to give up on a guy who can get open that easily, we need to stick with it and know it’s going to mean some big drops as well as some big plays. Why? Because that’s what this roster is. The talent is raw but there. The older players are not going to tear up this league.

Yes, those points would have been big, but if there are people out there that think that that would have made our O Line significantly better or Jefferson rendered more covetable then they are deluded in my view.

We needed to go back to those plays. That might have helped us score, but we took a half to get the youngsters involved again outside of trick plays. Just execrable coaching. This game might have felt better with a Watson score then but I very much doubt that the outcome or other issues would have been changed.

If QB1 is going to give up on a rookie mistake the FIRST play of the game, then that is more on QB1 than the rookie. Why on earth would you not go back to him after seeing how he blew past the defense? How about trying to bolster the young rookie's confidence by giving him another shot? That's what a team leader would do.

Nah...just not the Rodgers way. He'd rather just shake his head and pretty much ignore him the rest of the game. And it's going to hurt this team going forward if a certain head coach doesn't grow a pair.

If Rodgers makes those calls we don’t have a HC. Maybe that’s why LaFleur, by his own admission, had lambast his team for a lack of effort after the first half of football in the season. I’m sorry, but it’s not the first time any of this has happened. The myth that LaFleur is an asset is so threadworm it’s transparent.

We need to get Kaunu Benton up there to call it like it is. Go all "nuts down" on AR's and MLF's ARses!
Enough of 12's ego and arrogance.
He's probably thinking that we don't deserve his skills. On this I agree.
I want my QB to be a team leader that linemen want to block for and receivers would dive through a brick wall for.
12 doesn't have this set of skills, we deserve way better for $50mill/year.

Not saying we are going to right the ship as quickly as last year but it’s way too early to be cutting/firing people. “Panic early and avoid the rush” seems prevalent with a lot of our fans, and it always brings a smile to my face.

If your hope is a playoff place and no more then you may find that comforting. Watching LaFleur get his behind lacerated by a rookie HC should make you less chirpy about more of than that and why. Watching us forget about Jones and Dillon for a half after spouting how core they were all year should maybe perturb you too. If not, we’ll the fact that our HC has to kick the team for effort 30 minutes into a season might. Then there’s the continued bizarre O Line personnel insistence that keeps Hanson out there. There is more, but if you think that this repeat of the annual tradition LaFleur assured us would not occur has no more significance I envy your ability to foresee calm but not your chances of enjoying it.

I dont blame Lafleur. Hes obviously not in control of this offense. Its the same lousy offense from the end of the Mccarthy era which Mccarthy was not in control of either. Why do you think Rodgers held out last summer? You dont honestly think it was about how they treated past veterans do you? It was about usurping control over the offense which is why the dominant, balanced and creative offense of 2020 is a distant memory at this point. He held out for more control, got it, and this is the end result. Lafleur's hands have been tied by Murphy. Of course we wont see concrete proof of that until Rodgers is gone which cant come soon enough. End of rant.

Zone defenses are designed to occupy certain field areas and pass guys off. It makes for a crowded field if the pass rush is getting home, quickly. But if not, any decent receiver has time to sit in a hole in the zone for an easy pitch and catch.

Barry loves Zone. He overrates his front four thinking they'll pressure without having to blitz. Foolish thinking. Double Clark, double Gary, and you expect Lowry and P.Smith to get home?

It doesn't even take a talent like Jefferson to find a hole. But when it is a Jefferson or Davante or Jamarr Chase, it's lethal. When there's a good O-line as in Tampa and a great QB, they'll simply destroy the zone. That's what Brady did to us. Barry still hasn't learned the lesson.

You have Jaire Alexander, as close to a lockdown corner as exists in the league, and you play him as if he's just another guy in the zone.

As stupid as it gets.

Nah.

There was a TE lined up wider than Jefferson. Preston was lined up opposite Jefferson near the numbers with a Jaire 10 yards off. It was 2nd and 10. Clearly, the CB was going to carry Jefferson on a deep route. What happened is that Jefferson ran a 5 or 6-yard out that was completed. EPA/play on that result was negative for MN. MN did not convert on 3rd down but kicked a 56-yard field goal.

You can argue the process, I suppose, but the result was good for GB. It was Jefferson's 2nd shortest reception of the day.

Also, if GB's CBs are going to consistently line up 10 yards off, WRs like Jefferson can run 5 yard outs successfully a lot. That the TE and therefore Preston were in the vicinity is to my mind a red herring.

Here is the play:

The drop was a bigger play even than it seemed at the time.

With that TD, MLF likely kicks the FG when 4th and goal to take a lead at 10-7. The pack's later TD makes it 20-17 in the fourth quarter; instead of down and out, the pack is in the middle of it and instead of costing home the vikes worry. Different ball game.

Yes, Tim, a game changing play. Goes to show how important every play is-- one reason I love football, never a dull moment.

Dr, Emmett Brown said changing a second of the events that happened will alter everything that did happen to not happening. It's true in a movie and true in reality. Agree. I would have loved to see what happened after a catch also. I guess will need to be happy with a similar play and catch next week, but that, I guess, is up to Rodgers, even if MLF calls for it. Broken trust runs deep for the ONE.

I actually agree with Taryn, here, that the whole game changes after that IF Watson makes the catch and cruises in for a TD....and as she points out, it might not have been different for the better.

But LaF's tendency on short yardage at the goal line has almost always been to go for it, especially early in games. He rarely kicks the FG on 4th and goal at the 1 unless it's late and is outcome-determining.

The drop was important but not because it cost them 7. From that point on, Rodgers phased Watson out of the offense just like he always does when a receiver who isnt his buddy makes a mistake. He didnt get another target till the 2nd half. Rodgers is a basket case and its not getting better. Its only getting worse.

With 8 minutes to go in the first half, we were behind 7-0 and were 4th and goal inside the 1. By halftime, we were down 17-0. Those were a bad 8 minutes.

After they stopped us on that play, they started on the one, had a couple of good runs, and then connected on a really long catch and run. We held them to a FG. Then we had the ball, down 10-0, threw an incomplete, a one yard completion that Davis ran two yards with, and then an incomplete to Jones. Punt. 44 seconds burned off the clock.

Minnesota comes down the field, a 35 yard pass and finally, a long TD pass to Jefferson. With 45 seconds left. 45 seconds that wouldn't have been on the clock if we'd done anything with the ball on offense.

We start the second half by giving up a sack/fumble that was converted to 3 points, 20-0.

Basically, we had four unsuccessful offensive plays in a row and then a turnover. Instead of being inches away from 7-7, it went to 17 -0.

The drop is on Watson, but the 4th and 1 failure was a team effort.

I cannot agree that the first play of any game is the game changing play of the game. Yes, Watson should have caught the pass but we can't be out of a game after one play. As I posted in another article earlier today Rodgers was frustrated and he seem to remain so for the remainder of the game. That's ridiculous.

What should be doing is giving Watson a supportive pat and telling the kid to get ready I'm coming to you again. And then do so as soon as possible throw another pass to Watson to give him another chance. I did notice that Watson received 2 or 3 passes later in the game but Rodgers needs to be better at picking up his team mates after a mistake or a drop.

If I was going to pick a game changing play I would have chosen the failure to score on the 4th and goal play from the Vikings one yard line. If would have been huge to get on the board at that point. But poor OL execution ended that chance.

The question now is how will the Packers respond in next week's game against the Bears at Lambeau. Thanks, Since '61

Since'61...I've always respected and enjoyed reading your post. Thank you for your contributions, it raises the intellect of this site.

Let me say first...Watson has nothing to do with the outcome of that game...zero, nothing.
The Packers as a team weren't ready for week 1, which seems to becoming a pattern.

I found something interesting about Ron wolf and what he had to say in retrospect after retirement..from Jason Wilde
"After his retirement as the Green Bay Packers' general manager in 2001, Wolf had said several times that one of his biggest regrets was that he felt he hadn’t surrounded quarterback Brett Favre with sufficient talent at wide receiver."

In my 4 decades plus of Packer fanship, i have never seen a receiver room so void of talent...ever in my life. Including tight ends.
No disrespect to Doubs and Watson, who might someday be great receivers.
If a team has to rely on rookie wide receivers, you may have already lost.
That's not how this team has operated the last 30 years with two HOF QB'S

Ron Wolf never let his pass catching talent twindle to next to nothing, neither did Ted (RIP).

Is Rodgers pissed off?
He should be.

If Packer upper management are asking how they got here, they need only to look in the mirror.
It's not Rodgers fault, or the receivers or tight ends fault they are, where they are.

How did they get here?
By ignoring the position since Jordy got shown the door and bad draft choices, especially 3rd round tight ends.
Sorry...guys like Devin Funchess, Ryan Grant,, J'Mon Moore, Amari Rodgers, ESB and even MVS, weren't the answers.

Here's the article about the Packers and how they handled the receiving talent in the past.

If our QB#1 was not SO GREEDY....We could have a better WR at the top. Nobody comes to GB because of AR...Why would they.....They're not gonna get paid...He is though. The idea was to build the defense up but, the WR room has been neglected for a long time. HOF QB play is suppose to elevate the room.....We have a QB that is in his ways and unlikely to put in the xtra time it takes to get these guys up to speed. A lot of QB's get together in the off season with WR's if they have post season mentality. Ours is one foot in retirement every year and has never put in the xtra for younger guys in the offseason as far as I know.

The NFL wants to put the onus on the players. They put the cap on to make sure they get their money. You can't expect a player who has a limited time, not to get as much as he can. Don't blame Rodgers or Adams for cashing in while they can.

That's the union in me speaking but, the cap was first invented to keep play even, now all the teams are worth billions and still get over half of all the players make for them.

AR has all the skill in the world to be the greatest at what he does. The ideal QB is Brady type. Takes less money for at least 1 more skill player and just moves the chains...gets rid of the ball swiftly and keeps chugging the ball toward the end zone....He get's his team fired up on the sideline. It's more frustration with all that potential that will never be shown to our team especially when it counts most...the post season. Unless the defense gets it together in a big way and comes up with pick sixes in the post season. We are doomed to repeat this perpetual loop of failure in the post season. The Lions, Vikings and potentially Bears are improving. I don't think we can any longer walk in any of these venues and say we got this without a better effort.

Take less money?
That's essentially (indirectly) Rodgers paying for his own skilled players. Interesting concept.
Is there any guarantee that the Packers would use that money on a skilled player for Rodgers?
Or would the Packers sign another Jimmy Graham for 10 million a year?
Or spend 182 million mostly on defensive players in free agency (in two weeks) back in 2019.
Or would the Packers trade up and draft a QB to sit on the bench for years instead of adding talent on the field when the team was on the cusp of going to the Super bowl?
.
Last i checked it wasn't Rodgers responsibility to provide the team with skilled players on the roster by taking less money.

Well, i guess there is only 1 Tom Brady "Type"
Can we clone him?
Probably not, so we are stuck with Aaron Rodgers
Or, if you prefer...Jordan Love.
.
Couldn't the Packers have drafted skill players for Rodgers?
Probably.
Since 2011, how many 1st round picks have been spent on talent to surround Rodgers?
ZERO.
Every 1st round pick since '11 has been spent on defense, only one 1st round pick has been used on an offensive player the last 12 years. His name is Jordan Love.
He doesn't play, doesn't contribute on the field.
This may go down as one of the dumbest draft picks taken when your team has been 1 game away from the SB with a HOF QB, two years in a row.

So whose fault is it Phantom....
Rodgers for not taking a paycut, or the Packers braintrust?

Ahhhh...Roger haterade....lol
Did Rodgers neglect the wr room?
Or is it his fault because he took a market value contract?
Or is everything just Aaron Rodgers fault, because he's Aaron Rodgers?

Don't forget to purchase your Jordan Love Jersey, before they trade our 1st round bench player for a 4th or 5th round pick after declining his 5th year option at the end of this season.

Just imagine if Gute traded up for Justin Jefferson instead of Jordan Love....

Market setting contract. His #1 WR didn't want to play with him any more. As I say Jefferson at #20 was the pick and him and Adams together was a missed opportunity for 2 Super Bowl wins. If Adams walks we have fresh #1 WR and the picks from Adams. Win Win...I don't hate Rodgers...He's just not all that and a bag of chips. I could name 5 QB's I'd take over him now. He does not play well in the playoffs.

Since'75, first I appreciate your generous comments in your opening sentence.

I agree that the Packers receiving room looks pretty weak right now. However, they can and hopefully will improve as the season goes on. They need to learn their routes and run them crisply. Next they need to catch the ball. Yes, there will be drops that is part of the game but they need to make the catches when the ball is thrown accurately and on time. In the MLF offense blocking is also a core skill for the receiving corps. All of this should be improved with coaching and practice.

The problem I see is that our veteran receivers, Cobb and Watkins, don't scare anyone and they may not be adequate to get the offense through until Doubs and Watson improve. Winfree may become one of our best options during the early part of the season.

The other approach is to utilize our RBs more often both in the ground game and the passing game. We should have run the ball more often during the Viking game and we should call more run plays as we go forward. The Packers fortunate to have 2 RBs who are excellent receivers and Jones in particular is a matchup problem for defenses and once he is in space he cans core from anywhere on the field. We need to force the defense to focus on the RBs and this in turn should create one on one opportunities for our receivers.

The other key is our OL. They must be more effective in run and pass blocking than they were against the Vikings.
Any offense only goes as far as their OL takes them regardless of how well the skill players can play. 4 sacks and 5 QB hits in unacceptable especially given that Rodgers will soon be 39.

Management's expectation that Rodgers can make his receivers better is only true if he gets protection from the OL and if the receivers run their routes correctly. After that Rodgers accuracy can take over.

Now is the time to forget the Vikings game, start over, and see how the team responds in this week's game against the Bears. GPG! Thanks, Since '61

We disagree a touch 61....
Our problem isn't our veterans (although they could be utilized more one would think)

The problem is starting a season with either rookies, or veterans way past their prime.
The problem is.....being in this position to begin with.

And you are correct, you couple that with starters out on the O line, a defense who got clearly outcoached, and yes, they maybe should have relied on the run more.

In the past, the offense could have taken over and scored enough points to still win this game.
************
And again, you are correct...the receiver room will get better with time i have no doubt. The sin is...starting out here at ground zero. They have nowhere to go but up.
But as we all know, it takes most receivers awhile to acclimate to the NFL and Rodgers.
Once again....a draft and develop team should not be relying on rookie receivers. Or any team for that matter.

Before the season, we all just kind of thought the receiver and tight end room was a problem on this team. And that the running game and defense will get us through those growing pains.

I think for the 1st time in awhile, we as Packer fans are actually concerned about a Bear game. Imagine that right?

But lets just hope, a bear game victory is exactly what we need at this point to put this viking game behind us.

The 4th and goal play was doomed from the start. The shotgun rpo runs on short yardage fail time and time again but they keep doing it cuz Rodgers just has to have the option to throw. God forbid they grow a pair, lineup with some tight ends and a fullback on the field, and let AJ Dillon carry the pile. Instead they give it to him out of shotgun where he has to come to almost a complete stop at the mesh point. Thats all Rodgers. Go back to Lafleur's 1 year with the Titans and you'll rarely, if ever, see Derrick Henry running out of shotgun. It was all singleback and i-form runs where Henry would get the ball with a head of steam running towards the line of scrimmage. But Rodgers wont allow that in Green Bay.

If you can't line up any personnel group and gain ONE yard, then what the hell have you been doing in practice?

I'm an old Power I guy. You wedge block at the point of attack,(over Runyan) you slam the lead blocker in there (even if it's a defensive lineman) with the ball carrier and move the pile. That's what I like. I remember the Fridge running over George Cumby, the midget linebacker.

An alternative is using a younger, more mobile QB and run an RPO. I like that choice, too. You could run Wildcat.

I don't like slamming Dillon into the pile behind a weak line. I don't think that was a very good choice, because kicking a FG would have been better than a play that was "doomed from the start".

My disappointment is much as last year, when I spent my 401k to attend and watch us be clobbered by the Saints.
Like then, the Packers looked flat, uninspired, unprepared.
It reminded me much of many of McCarthy’s teams playing lifeless football in highly flaunted contests; I remember specifically the Packers/Broncos nationally televised game when we were both 6-0–and we crapped the bed.
In any case, it would be outstanding to see our defense next week,
flying to the ball like we’re in the SB.
We’ll see —Go Packers!!

I have to jump around a little since I'm a little tired from the trip up to Miny.
Wow the US Bank stadium is beautiful and loud vs the aged Lambeau Field. Thoughts?

Oh lordy this GB Packers team needs O-line help and fast. Poor play is not acceptable on every snap, a few can be expected per game. But when Runyon left, it caused more issues going forward than the one-time Watson- I Can't Catch A TD Pass.
And the Chibears match on Sunday night will not be a pushover either.

Imo the drop was a huge game-changer play, yes, but it's just the first game for our Rookie and team. I think the Packers' starters should have played at least a quarter of preseason to adjust from practice speed tendencies' to game time. Cause it showed and the fans knew it. All the timing and being a game of inches matters come game time and game speed. Yeah-Wrong cuts and turns happen on occasion.

Beginning to believe LaFleur is too soft on these special 22 starters, and now the 22 have bruised egos to go with a losing record and bruised body, which may or may not show up in 6 days' time.

Special teams are still very bad, and the lack of pass rush to go with the loose coverage didn't help.
Always take points when probable- thought MLF learned this 2 years ago.

2. "Special Teams are still very bad". You're gonna need to explain that to me. No turnovers, no penalties, no long returns, no missed FGs.....what are you seeing?

3. What would you recommend for the line? Remember, we have a game Sunday and it's Tuesday already. Who are we lining up? Who are the reserves.? I mean, we started the season with 10. We play the best five, which on paper would be Bakhtiari, Runyan, Myers, Newman, Jenkins. Our backups would be Nijman, Tom, Rhyan, Walker, Hanson.

That's it. There's no other options back in the stock room...all we have is what you can see on the shelf.

To insinuate that one dropped pass by Watson caused the Packers offense to flounder is ludicrous. Rodgers had the whole game to get this offense going and played QB like a rookie. He again held the ball too long, took sacks and refused to throw vertically to veteran receivers Cobb, Watkins, and Tonyan. Same old story lines…trying to come up with excuses for Rodgers poor QB play year after year. It’s pathetic when he alone has never proven clutch or good against playoff teams. Let’s remember he had Davante Adams against the 49ers last year and Rodgers could not score a TD in the red zone for three quarters of football. Then they blamed the Packers special teams for the loss at home. It was all on Rodgers ineptitude at QB in a pressure playoff game where Rodgers always chokes. His losing playoff record speaks volumes all by itself.

Conventional Wisdom is that you take the points, because the hardest points to get on the board are the first points.

Of course, I question Conventional Wisdom quite a bit, but in this case, it's true. First points of the entire season. Get on the board. I wanted us to go for it, because I think that a good offense should be able to gain one yard on one play, especially when they can use any personnel grouping and call any play they want. But this probably wasn't the time to try to risk so much on it.

XXXXXXXXX

You start the season with 10 offensive linemen and you hope that you have enough. Then #1 and #2 aren't available, so you're starting #6 and #7. Then #4 gets hurt, and you're starting #8. Your line at that point is :

#6 Nijman....who I think is our LT. I'm not expecting much from Bakhtiari.
#7 Tom
#3 Myers
#8 Hanson
#5 Newman, playing out of position.

This is temporary (I hope),but it illustrates that we have finite options. Right now, we're looking at Wallace and Jones if somebody gets hurt against the Bears. Everybody who is screaming "Get Rid Of Hanson" should think that through a little.

As I said, temporary. Jenkins is going to return, he'll be the RT, which will put Newman back at RG. Runyan will return, and that'll put Tom and Hanson back on the bench, where they belong right now.

A line of Nijman, Runyan, Myers, Newman, and Jenkins is going to look a lot better than the Nijman, Tom, Myers, Hanson, Newman configuration that we had out there against the Purple.

Going for it wasnt the problem. Trying (and failing yet again) with that stupid shotgun rpo on short yardage where Dillon has to come to a nearly complete stop at the mesh point is just flat out stupid. But Rodgers has to have his option to pass and keeping him happy is more important than winning these days.

When Watson dropped that pass, I immediately thought of the game at Buffalo in 2014, which the Packers lost to an inferior team. It cost them home field advantage in the playoffs--and we all know how THAT ended up. Early in the game, Jordy Nelson was wide open deep for an easy TD and dropped the pass. The Packers offense sputtered the rest of the day. Every receiver drops one of those at least once in awhile, but there's no denying that it is a huge momentum change.

I thought Watson was more involved in the game plan than he should've been, considering that he missed all of training camp. They went to him on a third-and-short late in the game, and he didn't even get his head around to see the ball. These are typical errors for a young player. I thought they should have tried to break him in more slowly.

Is it truly possible that we don't recover well from an early kick in the nuts?

"This was likely compounded even more by the fact that Romeo Doubs ran a wrong route just two plays afterwards. Two rookies making two mistakes within three plays."

This is not accurate. They asked Rodgers about this after the game and he said he threw that pass away because of how the defender was breaking. Doubs did not run the wrong route. At least that's what Tom Silverstein said on the post-game Green 19 podcast.

I don't buy the argument that there was a lack of trust in their young players. And I assume here the author is speaking strictly of the WRs, not Quay Walker, Zach Tom, etc. As far as the WRs, Doubs got targeted quite a few times and I thought responded well for a rookie. I do think the Watson drop affected Rodgers' trust in Watson. A catch there would have done a lot for the confidence of both Watson and Rodgers. I'm more worried about Rodgers moving forward. He needs Watson to develop. Missing the preseason hurt this kid a lot. I think if he would have played in a few games prior he would have pulled that catch in and scored. Rodgers needs to be a leader and help develop these young receivers.

We need a wr to be drafted every yr atleast in the later rounds(except for rodgers whom didnt show much yet) and see if he turns out to be good one atleast that wont pressure us like this year where we want all our wr's to develop or make less rookie mistakes on the fly.

Aaron Rodgers threw 12 incomplete passes. He was 22 for 34. He also got sacked 4 or 5 times.

The first one to Watson
Then the one you mentioned.
A bullet that bounced off Jones.
A force to a double covered Tonyan.
A heave of an interception.
A few throwaways.

In other words, on most of the dropbacks, people were open and he made a good throw. On some occasions, nobody was open and he threw it away. On other occasions, he took a sack, which he shouldn't do because it leads to injuries and turnovers. He's usually better about that.

I don't think the problem is Rodgers, or the receivers, or "trust'....I think the problem is that Rodgers didn't have enough protection some of the time. If you want to successfully pass the ball, the first rule is you have to protect your QB and give him time.

You are right on this. Our success starts with our oline and need to fix our oline ASAP.
We should stop toying too much with our oline otherwise it'll impact their rythm like it did in both of our playoffs.

Oline is hurt, #1 receiver hurt, and theyre playing 2 rookies. So what do they do? Throw twice as many passes as runs. Its literally the same story over and over again. Good defenses will just come out and play against the pass and shut them down cuz they know this team will literally never lean on the run. Imagine being Z Smith or Danielle Hunter knowing full well theyre gonna pass 2 out of every 3 plays. You just pin your ears back and go eat. Theyre literally inviting defenses to just attack the quarterback. They must find balance but we all know thats never going to happen with 12 under center. Never in a million years.

Hopefully this is like the last yr first game thing against Saints and we bounced back well after that game. Things to worry are that we dont have a quality or experienced oline like we do last yr whom we could easily plug in and play into multiple positions if needed in a game. But this yr with inexperience in this group worries me a bit. On top of it we have very depleted wr receiver our wr1 have a max of 600 yds season.
During this offseason everybody expected that defense can only take a step forward with all the additions and into the second yr in barry's system but the team looked clueless against vikings last sunday.

If you look at all the top teams they either have big time weapons or a great oline and i am afraid we dont have both. Only time will tell.

Chicago isn't nearly as good on offense as the Vikings are. Cousins-to-Jefferson is a better weapon than Fields to St.Brown. Dalvin Cook is better than David Montgomery. And don't even get me started on that feeble excuse of an offensive line Chicago has. It's a good thing for Fields that he can run.

Last week, we held an above average offense on their own field to 23. This week, we should be able to hold a below average offense, on the road, to less than that.

A lot of those "top teams" lost this weekend, didn't they? Rams? SF? Cincinnati?

I just posted this earlier but, did you hear they just signed Caleb Jones to the active roster?

I love this dude's story, and his potential.

You want 9 OL on the gameday roster. Your 5 starters and 4 backups. But three of our preferred starters are out, so we're already down to #9 in order, which is guys like Hanson and Walker and......Caleb Jones.

Ready or not, this team is one injury away from having to play Caleb Jones.

Agreed Vikings are a far superior team than the bears but again we can never underestimate anyone in this league. On a given day any team can beat any team in this league.

It wasn’t exactly a trick play but it was designed to stress and probably fool the defense. I am not sure if it would have worked twice. My guess from all the statements from our coaches before the game was that we were going to run the ball a lot. Instead we threw long on the first play. They had great defense line pressure the rest of the game to force Rodgers to throw short.

A few months ago MLF was on (if I am remembering correctly) The Dan Patrick show? Anyway he was asked a direct question that I think at the time was sort of meant to be silly. However, it got very cringy and a nervous MLF answered it in a serious manner.
The question? When you and Aaron get into a discussion on the sidelines about what plays should be run, who sort of wins out in those moments? MLF answered with a nervous look, Oh Aaron for sure. Most every time time I’ll just defer to him. It got awkwardly silent from both men for a couple seconds then the cringe of nervous laughter from both.
He didn’t even have to think about his answer. Even if it wasn’t true, his answer, for the world to see, was swift and automatic that Rodgers was the man. I thought that 30 seconds of time to be telling.
MLF does the ironing, dishes, and laundry while Rodgers sits on the recliner watching the Kardashians with a scotch and a sandwich that MLF made him.

Lafleur's hands are tied behind his back. He got his marching orders from Murphy to keep Rodgers happy at all costs. Thats become more important than winning at this point and it shows.

What bugs me is a great observation from Andy Herman on Pack A Day Podcast, during a conversation with Aaron Nagler:

I don't know what it is, but when the Packers fall behind, they panic.

It's almost palpable; you can feel it in the air. The impatience to get even or retake the lead is so great that it leads to bad decisions in the form of bad play calls.
