Five Candidates to be the Packers Breakout Player of the Year

The Green Bay Packers enter the 2023 season with a lot of unknowns. For the first time in 15 years, they have a new starting quarterback. The team is also much younger than it has been in recent years with veterans like Aaron Rodgers, Marcedes Lewis, Adrian Amos, Allen Lazard, and Dean Lowry no longer with the team.

But who will be the team’s breakout player? Who will be the player who was on the team last year but is now taking on a bigger role and makes a big leap in the quality of his play once given the opportunity?

This year’s rookie class is not eligible for this list. While there are other players who have a good chance to make a jump, these are my top five.

5. OL Zach Tom

Tom is in a battle with Yosh Nijman for the starting right tackle position. The second-year man out of Wake Forest proved his versatility last season, filling in at four positions along the offensive line.

Tom started five games as a rookie when injuries struck along the offensive line. Right away in training camp, he made a good first impression and picked up the offense faster than Sean Rhyan who was drafted a round ahead of him.

Now Tom has a chance to establish himself as a starter and a quality one at that. His first step is winning a starting job somewhere along the offensive line.

4. DL Devonte Wyatt

The Packers selected Wyatt with their second pick in the first round in 2022. The former Georgia star was only a minor part of the defensive line rotation in his first NFL season.

In the final three games, Wyatt saw more playing time after Dean Lowry was injured and lost for the season. He showed flashes of talent and made some plays by penetrating the offensive line and disrupting ball carriers.

While playing only 23 percent of the Packers defensive snaps, Wyatt recorded 1.5 sacks and showed his potential once he got more comfortable in the defense.

Now with Lowry and Jarran Reed departed as free agents, Wyatt is expected to be a starter along the line. He has a big opportunity to show he can live up to his draft position and become a solid contributor on defense.

3. ILB Quay Walker

Walker started 16 games and played all 17 as a rookie but the Georgia alum had his struggles, especially early in the season.

While Walker led the Packers with 121 total tackles, he had issues taking the proper angles on running plays and just reading plays in general. By the end of the season, Walker had improved in those areas.

He has elite speed for an off-ball linebacker and he and De’Vondre Campbell could be the most dynamic starters the Packers have had in a long time if Walker starts to realize his potential.

Walker will also have to control his temper which got him ejected from two games last season.

The talent is there. If Walker makes a second-year jump, he could be the team’s breakout player in 2023.

2. WR Christian Watson

Watson got off to a slow start last season due in part to nagging injuries. He dropped a sure touchdown on the Packers first offensive play from scrimmage in Week 1 and struggled to get on the field early in the season.

But the former North Dakota State star had a breakout game against Dallas in Week 10 and never looked back. He finished the season with 41 catches for 611 yards and seven receiving touchdowns.

Watson has a rare combination of size and speed that give him the potential to become a strong WR1 in this league. He needs to improve his consistency and his hands to take his game to the next level and prove he can be the primary weapon in the passing game.

Watson showed his potential as a rookie, now he needs to show he can consistently get the job done.

1. QB Jordan Love

Love is finally getting a chance to start after sitting behind Aaron Rodgers for the first three years of his career. With Rodgers now with the Jets, the Packers have put their faith and their future in the hands of their 2020 first-round pick.

The coaching staff and many teammates said they saw Love make a lot of progress last season. He showed some of that ability in his limited game action last season especially in a late-game fill-in for an injured Rodgers in Philadelphia.

Love will have to play with an inexperienced group of receivers and tight ends but that also gives the unit a chance to mature and grow together.

All eyes will be on Love who now has a two-year window to show he can be the next quality quarterback in Green Bay after signing an extension over the offseason.

There will likely be growing pains but by the end of the season, can Love prove he is a quality NFL starter? We’ll find out starting in Week 1 in Chicago.

Excellent list.
Love, since he’s taking over at such a huge position, could very well be it.
I think Wyatt, since it usually takes d linemen awhile to figure it out in the NFL. He’s shown some traits in his limited opportunities, and he was highly rated coming out of Georgia.
This list in itself adds to the excitement for the upcoming season. Lots more unknowns than we’re used to. But talent and opportunities abound!

Great stuff, Gil. Pretty exciting players, all 5 of them. Romeo Doubs. I think he's going to go off, big time this season, just like Watson.

One look at our recent draft history, and, I get it. Pretty tough limiting it to just 5 players. All of those you listed are worthy of calling out, and it's a really good thing to have confidence that there might be more additions to your list. Legit additions.

Along with Doubs, I might throw Kingsley Enagbare, Jonathan Ford, Tedarrell Slaton and Samori Toure in there too. Enagbare has some unique gifts, physically, as does Ford. KEnagbare and Ford have the potential to be a big impact players in 2023. Toure came into minicamps this year looking like a player who will not be denied.

TC should be really fun to watch this year. Huge competition everywhere.

With the drafting of Van Ness and the pending return of Gary, I think Enagbare is getting overlooked as a contributor. I thought Enagbare played quite well for a rookie at a premier defensive position last year and if he takes a second year jump, he could be an impactful player in 2023. Definitely believe he belongs on the list.

I'm right there with you Guam... I thought Enagbare played really well last season He wasn't drafted high because of his 40 time (4.87). He played DE in college so OLB in the NFL was a new position. I'm really excited about this kid who everybody seems to have forgotten after the Packers drafted Van Ness.

Now wouldn't it be awesome if Gary comes back faster than anticipated, Preston Smith has his usual "Odd" year dominance, Van Ness contributes which I think he definitely will (strength like that is ALWAYS effective in the NFL), AND Enagbare makes a jump.

Sign me up for some of that!

Great list Gil, no arguments on the potential for anybody listed.
My only argument is that the list is only 5 deep!
For the first time as long as I can remember, we've got young talent across most positions, both sides of the ball and special teams.
There's potential for 10 to 15 to make this list depending on how the season plays out.
Very excited about 2023 for so many reasons, especially the talent level across the board vs previous teams that had heavy reliance on one or two stars.

There should be a short sublist of rookies because they're certainly capable of breaking out like Walker and Watson in their first season (Watson finished 7th in ORoY voting and Walker made the All-rookie defensive team). We'll need a few of them to break out this season as well. Slot WR, TE, OLB are all areas where opportunities abound. I'm also intrigued by the potential of Wooden against mobile QBs on passing downs.

The most hopeful addition I would add to the list is Meyers. While Jones and Dillon have solid yards per rush numbers, it dips dramatically through the center-right guard gap; in fact, Jones' average drops all the way from 5.2 to 3.5 yards. Meyers has been good in pass protection, though, and once again, he'll probably be given every opportunity to succeed.

I don’t know if Love would be or could be a “breakout” player. I just want him to be above average. If the other players mentioned improve and do well then it puts less pressure on Jordan.

I know what you mean about less pressure on Love. It is a very common thing to hear that a team wants to “build around the QB”, but what does that mean? I’ve always argued that ANY improved aspect of a team helps the QB.
Offensive line? Receivers? Running game? Defense? Special teams? ALL OF IT benefits the QB. Football is the ultimate team game!

You've just made the perfect description of "complimentary football" or "TEAM".

If we have that this season, we'll be in contention for a lot of things.

Patrick, while you certainly have a point, and I'm very in favor of high probability plays that don't require superstardom of JL10, especially early in the season, just by virtue of the position of QB if he merely does that he'll be the biggest breakout player on the team.

Excellent list.
- Just put Tom at center and be done with it. He'll break out and we will have our best 5
starting in the trenches.
- Wyatt has to make a jump - no excuses.
- Walker playing smarter and instinctively and his jump will be meteoric. Top 5 LB in the NFL
- Watson? Staying healthy is his jump. If he does, the sky is truly the limit.
- Love? He just has to show progress week to week. No breakout needed. His breakout needs to be 2024.

One can’t be sure since he has not been given the chance. That’s what I hope comes during camp. Myers has not been good enough to retain his spot without competition. I don’t think many here would disagree with that. So let Tom compete, unless they’ve a secret serious other alternative, and let the best man win. If nothing else, that gives us better options in the event of injury in season.

I wouldn't include Zach Tom as a candidate. As far as I'm concerned he has already arrived. He just has to continue to play like he has been.

Instead of him I think I'll go with WR Samari Toure, he's put the work in and deserves a chance.

We have serious depth at fast WRs! Bo Melton is 4.34, almost identical to Mecole Hardman. Reed is what, 4.37? And Jeff Cotton 4.38. With Christian Watson that's 4 deep. Even if two stay on the PS and only one is ever on the field at a time, that depth is valuable!

We’ve never had this much speed at WR, and TE for that matter, two deep with Musgrave & Kraft. WR is lights out with it. Been quietly hoping Bo Melton will be utilized heavily in Jet concepts this year. He’s tough. Guessing he and Reed/Toure combine for a great set of options to carry us throughout the season.

What happens is Nixon is the breakout player on Defense and the team does not want to risk him at returner. one of these speed demons could be the next returner to hold a roster spot with only so many spots left in the receiver room.

I think 2 I like for breakout year are Love on offense. Walker on defense. Walker has 1 year play over Love. He is extremely talented. Working with & listening to Campbell he should make the 2nd year jump. Temper in control he will be as good as he wants to be. Love total control of his offense, for the first time & working with his backfield & receivers will boost his confidence and the squads confidence in him. MLF directs play calling takes a ton of pressure off. Am looking forward to seeing both Love & Walker make a nice development move. GPG !!!

Eager anticipation plus realistic uncertainty equals good drama.
I'm looking forward to all five of these guys taking at least a step up in 2023.
***
It may be good if four wide receivers, including Watson, nab 40-60 catches.
My hunch is that we have at least that many who can get separation on their own with a combination of quick footwork, speed, and savvy -- plus we're hoping the schemes of LaFleur will help them to get free, as well.
In that case, we could have a few guys to go to in tough situations, as long as they have the twist and timing and tenacity to go get the ball out of the air.
***
About a fortnight to training camp.
To pass the time, we could share gameday recipes for snacks and heartier fare.
My contribution is corn-based chips with sour cream as the dip.
Sometimes my wife feels sorry for my ineptitude in the kitchen and makes me a good brat to go with some other fixings.

Swisch, while morel hunting this spring I stumbled across Golden oyster mushrooms. Awesome in the air fryer but very seasonal.
If you find yourself at a decent farmers' market, keep an eye out for farm grown vanilla oysters. Also excellent flavor and texture.
I air fry them with oil and seasoning eating them as an appetizer.
They are great however you use mushrooms in your cooking.
We're enjoying them tonight as an addition to our take/bake pizza.

FWIW, 2 of those 5 were on Dairyland's list of 5 who would have greatly expanded roles.

And all of that, and this article, and that I've posted more in the last week than since the draft means training camp must be right around the corner.

So Love, obviously, and our top picks from last year, and Tom.

I think Doubs has a tremendous opportunity. If he can stay on the field for 17 games and make 4 or 5 catches each game and keep us on the field, then I think the Big 3....Watson/Jones/Dillon....can do most of the rest.

On Tom, I ran across this interesting article:

https://zonecoverage.com/2023/packers/who-should-be-green-bays-starting-...

It kind of seems like they have Nijman lining up at a couple of places, neither of them LT. Newman, our #7 lineman last year, is playing 3rd string at LG. Ugh. But as to Tom, it looks like the plan is to play him and Runyan on the right side, which would be fine, and Bakhtiari and Jenkins on the left side, which would be really good.

Mt. Caleb at LT? I'd love to see it. They just don't make very many guys that size.

I doubt they will want Nijman practicing at LT if they are still working to get his technique mirrored on the right. For linemen, ITAs really only help with technique. They will likely want to keep him on the right until they are comfortable that has been achieved or decided he’s playing left.

More interestingly, Tom has played RT and C but no LT either. Jones had been a fixture absent Bakh, which seems to suggest that they are serious about him as a prospect there. I think Walker got a snap or two at LT. Tenuta was the 3rd option at RT, at least in open sessions. I would look at what happens once pads come on before judging how meaningful the above is though.

Didn't Tom play LT when DB went down with appendicitis last season?

My money is on Quay. He has superstar written all over him. If this defense is ever going to truly turn the corner, it starts with Quay. Ravens had Ray Lewis, Bears had Urlacher, Seahawks had Bobby Wagner, 49ers have Fred Warner, etc, etc. Every great defense has The Man in the middle. Quay, its your time now.

Every year at this time, we get similar prognostications, and every year, this is what we discover: The Packers use the mini camps to give players experience in the position they are NOT going to play. Hey, maybe this year will be the exception, but I've watched this play out for the last five years or so.

So I"M going to guess that Caleb Jones will be back at RT in training camp and the preseason, and Yosh will be back at LT. I have no idea at this point where they think Sean Rhyan fits.
Tom is the real question; much depends on whether he has made enough gains to be effective as a run-blocker. It's easy to forget just how good Nijman was at run blocking before his injury last year. If Nijman is the better run blocker, and Myer has improved enough, it is well possible that Tom ends up being the swing man this year. In many ways, that's the ideal outcome, since he can fill all five spots with little let down--a true sixth starter--because there are ALWAYS injuries.

Great list Gil and like many other’s said, that list could be 10 or 15 deep. Can’t remember a year that I’m more excited….maybe I should add the word “nervously” too.

Watson is an absolute game changer. Man…when he starts to hit his stride, he makes everyone look like they are in freeze frame. If he can be this weapon again and stay healthy and Love can get him the ball (lotta if’s), it will be the key to help open up so many opportunities for our other offensive players especially the Yout’s.

All from your list plus Doubs, Toure, TJ Slaton and some unexpected players (like Bo Melton etc). I bet on that.

I expect guys like Doubs and Watson to be “smarter” after a year in the league and system. Along with the physical work, they should be better versions of themselves mentally. That alone should set up improvement. Beyond that it’s a question of giving guys like Toure and Melton chances to show what they can do and having the faith to let Wyatt, Slaton and others just get meaningful snaps.

As to the rookies, that’s so much a question of how we bring them along, I hope we have moved on from the “must do everything” criteria and get them set up to contribute early and go fro there. From that point it is a question of how quickly they can settle, which varies and we won’t know till it happens. Who of the rookies/PS holdovers can look like he belongs when the pads are on and maintain it?

CW, "I hope we have moved on from the “must do everything” criteria and get them set up to contribute early and go from there." I agree 100%. The one thing the Packers staff/FO do that I think hurts player development is throwing too much at them early. Versatility is great, but IMHO sometimes they're turning a player who could be a fantastic cutting knife into one who is only a slightly dull Swiss army knife.

Spock, yes! The entire coaching staff has a huge role in the development part of "draft and develop." There's plenty of room and reason to vary that approach with the player but just take Zach Tom as one example: everybody's talking about his versatility and he can play all 5 positions. Ok. If he were to focus on 1 would he not be more effective at it? Same with other guys, do we have no one who could focus on his #2 position and be better at that? Don't we usually dress 10 O linemen anyway?

Jenkins is excited to stay at LG and have a chance to excel there. Of course you want a few with enough reps in practice at C to have some secure depth, but the variety of assignments at each position on the O line tell me that one position is a lot to learn.

CHTV thank you for keeping the ball rolling right up to TC!! I stopped listening to local sports radio a couple of weeks ago as all their stuff is on repeat till TC opens. Don't get me wrong the guys at 107.5 do a great job once the season starts, but CHTV is the only place to be right now.

As for me I'm going with Walker as my breakout. The guy is like Gary in that he is a physical freak of nature. He will do better with his temperament this year and I look for him to be one of the league's best. Pro Bowl year for Walker mark my words.

My 2nd would be either Dobbs or Watson, but I have to admit as of right now anyways I don't have a lot of confidence in either to play a full season.

40 times among our WRs: Watson 4.36 official or 4.28 unofficial timed by GB. Bo Melton 4.34. Jayden Reed 4.37. Jeff Cotton 4.38.

Of course I want to see Christian Watson healthy for 17 games (20 counting preseason) but there are reasons I hope all 4 burners show enough to at least be kept on the PS.
