Cory's Corner: One Guy Supersedes Packers' NFL Draft

This is the year for Jordan Love. He has shown that he is capable of being an elite quarterback. Can he do it consistently?

This is the time of the year where there is nothing but talk.

Talk about a lack of generating quarterback pressure. Talk about a lack of dynamic wide receivers. Talk about how the offense hasn’t done enough when it’s mattered most.

This NFL Draft is important in a lot of ways. The defensive and offensive lines need beefing up and it’s a real chance for Green Bay and the surrounding area heading north as far as Door County, to showcase itself on the national stage.

Regardless of what happens on the big stage just outside of 1265 Lombardi Ave., there is one thing that needs to change in 2025 to make it a success: Jordan Love.

The Packers quarterback wowed everyone in his first season as a starter in 2023. He had 32 touchdown passes and 11 picks. From Weeks 10-18, he completed 67.9 percent of his passes and proved that he can be a franchise quarterback in the NFL.

“He definitely understands that he’s the guy in charge, he’s going to be the guy in the huddle and he’s got to be an extension of us, and we’re excited for him,” said Packers coach Matt LaFleur in 2023.

Fast forward to 2024 and suddenly things and the explosiveness went out with a giant puff of smoke. He tallied only 56 20-plus yard passes and 10-plus runs, which ranked him 15th overall. The reason why Love was such dynamic player a couple years ago was because he mastered off-platform throws. He wasn’t afraid to get outside the pocket to either run, extend time to pass or just tuck it and run.

It all started in Brazil with the MCL sprain in the season opener vs. Philadelphia and then a groin injury in Week 8. Those things obviously made him second guess his legs but now the Packers need Love to be confident with his legs and his arm.

He already has the intangible quality that is embedded into every great quarterback.

“I think he’s taken steps to get there,” said LaFleur. “But I think he can really demand a lot, because the locker respects him. They respect him not only as a person, but by the work he puts in.”

Love knows how important this season is for the team and for judgment on who he is as a quarterback. Love had half a season in 2023 before throwing for 25 touchdowns and 11 picks in 15 games in 2024.

He cannot second guess his skill set or ability to lead. He’s played three road games so and he’s 1-3. He probably should’ve been 2-1 if Anders Carlson’s 41-yard field goal in San Francisco late in the fourth quarter would’ve went between the uprights.

Love knows that all eyes are going to be on him when mini-camp starts up soon followed not long after by training camp. He will get plenty of questions about his injuries and how it feels to throw three picks at in the NFC Wild Card at Philadelphia.

And that’s why Love is the perfect person to have under center. He is fine pointing the thumb at himself instead of pointing the finger at others.

So criticize if you must for things he has not done, but Love is the perfect captain for a young receiving corps. Do they need a No. 1 receiver? No. This team just needs Love to play the way he’s capable of playing.

Ahhh, yes, Jordan love, the real question, the main question. Forget about the endless questions related to whether or not the Packers need a cornerback, an edge rusher or a receiver in the upcoming draft. Do they need a franchise quarterback? might be the better question. Although, obviously, Love is being paid as if he is a franchise quarterback: 55 million dollars a years for four years, 160 million guaranteed. . . after just half a year ( the last half of his first year as a starter ) as being pretty good compared to his not so good first half. So just as the Packers gambled on Love in the draft, they gambled again on him after his so-so first year as a starter by paying him a fortune for an additional four more years.

Some past analysis when Love was in the 2020 NFL draft: " Most polarizing prospect, " " Boom or bust project, " " The allure of Jordan Love overlooks a lot of red flags, " High risk, high payoff, " Could develop into the best quarterback in this class- or a major bust, " " High risk, high reward, " " Inconsistent decision-making, " " Erratic as a passer. " Could end up being no better than a " journeyman quarterback. "

Three years development as backup to Aaron Rodgers, then two years as the starter.

So five years in, what have we got?

So five years in, what have we got?

How'd we feel after five years of Rodgers on the team after 3 years of development behind Favre and two years as starter?

Love has been as productive in my view...even more so, leading his team to the playoffs in his two years as starter.

Rodgers started his NFL career with: Donald Driver / Jennings / James Jones / Jordy Nelson / Don Lee at TE.
Jordan Love has: No WR1 / No WR2 / a bunch of 3-4 WR's that drop the ball and run mediocre routes and get covered like a bed in winter with man coverage. The lone positives are Kraft at TE and Jacobs as outlets. Gute has been beefing up the OL. JL needs a couple high end WR's stat....unfortunately that means rookies, but cheap for now....If Gute redeems himself for the quality WR drought handed to a late AR career and genesis of JL...we should see a big pop if he hits on a couple top tier prospects.

Five years in, you've got the rabble crying to TRADE MALIK, the only idea worse than ragging on Jordan Love as though you've got something real in your teeth. ANYBODY can dig out critical quotes about a prospect, EVERY scouting report from every scout includes tons of 'damning' quotes and critical comments, only some of which is true. WTF

I'm as excited about Jordan Love as the next Packers fan. I honestly think he can play consistently like he did at the end of 2023 and those playoffs. I also LOVE the Packers TE's and RB's rooms and think MLF can devise some really great game plans and production with Kraft, Musgrave, (Yes I still believe in Musgrave) Jacobs, and Marshawn Lloyd, Reed and hopefully Wicks. But I still believe for this offense to really thrive in ANY situation is to have a #1 WR. If that happens Love will be a BEAST!

Whether Gute moves up and gets Golden out of Texas, or Egbuka from Ohio St falls to him at 23, or he waits until round 2 and hopefully Jayden Higgins (My Draft crush) from Iowa St is there, Gute NEEDS to address it early and make it count.

Give me Royals in round 2 and Horton in 4.

"This is the time of the year where there is nothing but talk."

Seems so! At least this was not another article on M. Hardman's potential as a Packer.

I would enjoy reading an analysis on Matt LaFleur's production as the play caller the last two playoff years. I believe the greatest improvement for the offense will not come from drafting a first round WR, but from the HC's strategic game planning and tactical play calling during the heat of battle.

Would LaFleur be a better HC if he was not the de facto OC/play caller?

"I believe the greatest improvement for the offense will not come from drafting a first round WR, "

I think you're spot on. We've been through this recently, but if we're expecting an early WR pick to be elite, we're much more likely to be disappointed than we are to be rewarded. This team will move forward more by getting excellent use and execution by the the returning guys than by getting elite play from a rookie. In any facet of the game where you are weak, you need to be better in other places to make up for it.

Elite QBs elevate the players around them and make them better...there were some chinks in Pat Mahomes' armor this year, but that KC team has become one that treats the regular season as a warm-up for the playoffs...and still wins lots. They have a revolving door every year of WR at different places in their career to go with an elite pass-catching TE. Last year their OL wasn't as good...and it came back to get them.

A comment was made below that a certain "QB-who-will-not-be-named here" was highly accurate with a strong arm and a withering stare that demanded his pass-catchers have an eye for detail and execution if they wanted the ball. This isn't how Love goes about his business, but he's going to need to step up his game, or the run game, pass-catchers, blocking, and play-calling all need to be that much better to account for him.

Maybe that's the plan. There are teams out there that are very good at propping up QBs who are not Josh Allen or Pat Mahomes (I'm looking at you, Detroit) by being outstanding in other places. It can be done. I'd argue it's easier if your QB steps up.

I agree Love HAS to continue to improve his performance in the pass game. And so do his WRs, the OL (keeping the pressures blocked), and better plans from the pass game coaches.

I believe Love has grown as a leader and his work ethic has never been questioned. He seems very coachable...and a key reason I believe if the coaches do better, he will as well.

"He will get plenty of questions about his injuries and how it feels to throw three picks at in the NFC Wild Card at Philadelphia".

Many, as like the author, defend Loves' inconsistent play via the injury excuse. Is a bad decision injury based, or is the result of the bad decision injury based? When a player, especially a QB says,'I feel good enough to play', what he's saying is, I have an automatic excuse for whatever I do wrong in a game.

"And that’s why Love is the perfect person to have under center. He is fine pointing the thumb at himself instead of pointing the finger at others".

At $55 million a year, he should point the finger at himself, in time fans will also, because he gets $55 million a year.

"So criticize if you must for things he has not done, but Love is the perfect captain for a young receiving corps. Do they need a No. 1 receiver? No. This team just needs Love to play the way he’s capable of playing".

I don't criticize what he hasn't done, I criticize the expectation not achieved.
Love seems to be the 'Captain' of the ship of WRs floundering while still tied to the dock.
What is the capable way of Love, because it appears to be like, half of this, and half of that, which leaves the results, undesirable as a whole.

Last, but first, by the author, "This is the year for Jordan Love. He has shown that he is capable of being an elite quarterback. Can he do it consistently"?

To be recognized, truly, as an 'Elite' QB, one must perform to such a level for more than half a season, and no, combining two separate season halves doesn't make an elite one. I contend that there are only 5 true elite QBs in the league at any given time, and another 5 that are waiting for a seat to open, based on obvious play, accomplishments with league starter time considered.
Mahomes
Allen
Burrow
Jackson
Hurts
Stroud
Stafford
Daniels
Herbert
Purdy
I don't see where Love takes the seat of any, though one might argue against Herbert, or even Purdy, who has been to two NFCCGs and a SB, but still, who does Love truly unseat to be deemed elite, much less talked as being one waiting for an open seat.

I know, I know, it hurts, but truth always does, and until Love accomplishes the expectations, regardless of his talent, he simply isn't in reality, just in optimism.

Narratives never hurt, because they are narratives.

Which of the QBs on your "elite" list played their FIRST TWO YEARS as a starter behind the youngest team in the NFL? The youngest WRs? The youngest TE's?

Is Love's performance dependent on 10 other teammates or is their performance more dependent on him?

I played the game and know the truthful answer...and it doesn't hurt a bit.

"When a . . . QB says,'I feel good enough to play', what he's saying is, I have an automatic excuse for whatever I do wrong in a game."
See Farvre, Brett and Rodgers, Aaron. THESE two played hurt and played badly, over and over and over EVEN when we had excellent qb backups easily able to steer the ship a game or two. Incredibly poor 'athlete-first, team-last' decision-making by both QBs and whoever was handling them. Cost us many key games. Until Rodgers and Favre are held to that same standard, folks can STFU about Love, who has not demanded to play hurt over and over and over again unlike those two. Both were known to have broken thumbs (etc etc) and insisted on playing anyway.

Further, Love NEVER went to the media and said, 'I'm hurt but I think I can go'. Savvy observers speculated that playing somewhat (possibly) hobbled affected his visibly-off throwing, but at no point did Love lay groundwork for some 'built-in' excuse. OTOH, *every* single player on every single team tells the coaches and docs that they think they're good to go.

I'd never trade Love for any of those guys, we've got Malik Willis and we've seen Love perform. "We like our guys." Unwarranted expectations are the football fanatics' responsibility, not any player.

Rodgers was an exacting, tough, accurate, ball-protecting QB who demanded excellence. He also had an incredible Left Tackle and elite receivers.(And, I don't like the man)
Love has average receivers, his play-caller is average, his Left Tackle is average, he is prone to inaccuracy, has 'loose' footwork & doesn't always protect the ball.
That kind of individual needs an excellent play-caller who sets him up for success, an upgraded Left Tackle and @ least 2 stellar receivers. (none of that will happen)---back to the run game.

The best QBs have better WR's, OL's and elite OC's

This is an important season for #10 and the team. As well as Gute and Coach LaF.

I like Love and appreciate how he addresses the media, appreciates the team and represents the GBP. Now, I hope he can stay healthy and continues to improve.

Having the draft in Green Bay is super cool. Now, I will make my prediction. We move back and trade our 1st Round pick for a player and draft a RUNNING BACK!

BOOK IT, Danny-O.

I believe the Packers were at, or near the top for the most dropped passes. Combined with some minor nagging injuries at QB it is not surprising that Love's numbers dropped. I have no idea who the Packers will take in the draft but if Golden is by chance still on the board that would be the greatest gift to Love and the offense. No one can separate from coverage better giving Love a wider window to throw into. And, he doesn't drop passes! In fact he makes some spectacular catches. In short, he changes the whole offense into an explosive TD machine.

Of course there are no guarantees and he is certain to be gone in the top 20 if not sooner. Frankly I would consider moving up to get him. No other WR is worth being drafted in the first round. I suspect the Pack will go for defensive line with their first pick which is fine by me because Golden won't be there at 23 anyway. But I can dream. I hope the Bears don't get him.

According to a SI sports writer analysis, since 2000, the best positional "hits" in the first round are OL. DL are not far behind. The fewest hits come at WR.

This is a very good DL class. Imagine Hafley's Pressure Defense getting it done consistently with just a fearsome foursome! The blitz would become nearly unstoppable. A proven pressure prospect at DT makes sense to me. The draft has several. But good DEs too!

A lot of stuff in the NFL changes in 25 years....hell look in the mirror. Dial the magic mirror to 2020 or so for college football and them changing everything with being able to change college teams on a whim. We needed a WR #1 in FA...Gute did not want to pay. That's a pretty good reason for your QB1 to be inconsistent and flounder at times. No WR1 / WR2 / subpar LT....poor game planning by ML and poor play calling by ML. ML is the one on a short leash and if Gute does not get JL a pretty damn good WR this draft...his seat needs to get white hot cause the TEAM is built to win NOW in 2025 and 2026....after that a lot of guys will start timing out like Clark / Jenkins / Gary.

I want to see LaFleur prove he can craft a championship O from these pieces and win tactically. I want to see a passing O that is less deep ball fixated and more diverse. Give Love the best chance, just as we should the other skill players rather than the “just beat your man” traits we’ve shown on O.

Great Head Coaches can be excellent play callers too.

Does it make sense these coaches would be less great by delegating play calling to his OC? I don't. I believe a great HC is made great by leading, motivating, setting expectations and demanding accountability.

Would a Head coach who also calls play become a more effective HC by delegating play calls? I do.

LaFleur is supposed to be a premier offensive mind. As such his strength should in large part derive from his play design and calling acumen.

Other coaches are different people that bring different things to the table, for example Detroit has thrived with the type of delegation you call for, but with a HC who seems to bring other strengths to the table that LaFleur doesn’t obviously match.

If LaFleur is not designing game plans and calling, what exactly is he bringing to the table? If he’s failing at that then let’s just bite the bullet and move on.

Vikings coach seems better than ML. I'm okay with moving on from said coach as long as GB does not do the typical buy on the cheap and hire an unproven coach like ML for less coin because they are paying a let-go super bowl winning coach like MM and refuse to just eat the money and demand a cheaper route, like ML took with a lesser salary. If GB was to move-on I would rather go get a proven coach with a known winning career. ML seems to get out-coached in the playoffs every season. I have not seen the growth of learning from it.

Without Willis the Packers don't make the playoffs last year. The question with Love is: was the last half of 2023 an outlier? While the question is still being asked today, the answer will come this season. If Love proves to be far less than elite, the Packers are in real trouble. I want Love to be the franchise qb that they're paying him to be, but I'm not putting blinders on if his play isn't elite.
Seven years of Ball, Gutekunst, LaFleur and, especially, Murphy have garnered no super bowls. The draft is in Green Bay. Big deal. Where is the Lombardi trophy? That's what I want to see in Green Bay.

If you put Love out there, with adequate protection and adequate weaponry, he should get the job done. IF he doesn't, then we know that changes need to be made.

But we haven't done that yet. In his first year as starting QB, the pressure got past Tom's backup (Tom was out injured, and Bosa got past Nijman), and pressured Love into a game ending interception. Last season, we were missing our top three receivers AND our best offensive lineman.

Once. Just once. Put the best people you can on the field with him and see if he can get the job done. Strengthen the depth on the offensive line and add the best weapons you can. Then see if the offense can get enough points on the board in a playoff game to win it. That hasn't happened in four years. I think that's better than not getting what you can and then complaining about Love and LaFleur not being better.

Cameron Williams gave up 5 sacks, 3 hits and 18 hurries last year, way too much for a day 2 O lineman. I like Wyatt Milum but I think he's gone by 54. Gave up zero sacks over the last three years, 1155 passing snaps, and has a finishing attitude. He buried Abdul Carter so bad Carter got up and went after him. Carter won a few reps of him but Milum didn't let him get a sack. I'd try him at tackle but he is one T I wouldn't mind drafting to play guard either. He plays with inside attitude.

In order to unlock and regain the momentum we had in 2023 postseason with Love, I think we need a stronger Oline room. We can't have any question marks there going into the season and Aaron Banks is not enough. I think we need a future option at center, such as Jared Wilson of Georgia, and maybe an option at left tackle. A prospect like Jared Wilson would give our team the flexibility to Move Elgton Jenkins back to guard or tackle in case a serious injury was to occur during the season to one of the starters. Fans need to remember that Packers have always been the cream of the crop when it comes to quality Oline. Or else our season could be over. Love will need to find the connections with his pass catchers this year because that is what he is paid to do at 50 million dollars. And I expect him to have that expectation of himself. Not expecting Gute to give him Tet McMillan or even reach for a Jalen Royals (who he might be familiar with).
