Cory's Corner: Josh Jacobs Just Wants To Be Remembered

Winning means more than personal numbers. And that's why Jacobs came to Green Bay — to win.

Josh Jacobs is perfect for Green Bay. And not just because he is one of the last remaining bellcow running backs in the NFL.

There is no reason to pull Jacobs off the field. He can run between the tackles, he can run outside, he can block and he can catch passes.

He can do all those things at a very high level. In 2022, he led the league in rushing yardage with 1,653 — with 1,156 of those coming after contact. But he isn’t just a sledgehammer. He has great vision and the speed of a track star as he was second in runs of 10 yards or more with 41 that year.

He’s the total package. He can do so many things. You’d think he would be on top of the world.

But that’s just it. He’s not.

“Being a guy that has a lot of history and especially with the Raiders program, in the top three in almost every category since I’ve been there, it doesn’t really mean nothing because we didn’t win,” Jacobs said. “Being able to leave a legacy is something that I think about now, being older. Playing playoff football and obviously trying to get a ring is the only thing that’s really on my mind.”

Jacobs has put up the numbers. He has proven that he can run circles, hexagons, heck, he could run parallelograms against opposing defenses. But none of that matters if you’re not winning. Jacobs is entering his sixth season and he’s only been to the playoffs once, losing to the Bengals in the 2021 AFC Wild Card.

Since 2019, Jacobs’ Las Vegas teams have averaged 7.8 wins a season. Every year but one was marred with marginal play — only one season tallied a winning percentage better than .500.

“Never really played playoff football,” Jacobs said. “So, for me, especially as the back, I feel like you prove yourself in the games that really matter. I haven’t really gotten that opportunity. So, that’s something that I’m definitely looking forward to.”

That could be a tough pill to swallow for Raiders fans. But the 26-year-old Jacobs is just being honest. The only thing that people remember in the NFL is wins. There’s a reason why Dan Marino will never be considered one of the best ever. And it’s not because he threw for 48 touchdowns in his second season in the NFL. It’s because he never won a Super Bowl ring.

Is that fair? Maybe not. But that’s been the standard rubric for a long time. I never liked Tom Brady’s footwork or his inconsistent deep ball, but he won a jewelry store of rings. Who cares about that other stuff if you’re winning?

And that’s where Jacobs comes in. He came to Green Bay because he knows that the life of a running back is finite. And because of that, he wants to make sure every playing moment matters.

Because if you’re not winning in the NFL, you are nearly forgotten.

Leotis, I am getting the distinct feeling that people on this website just do not have a sense of humor at all.

I get that it is a slow time for NFL news, but posters here should not take it out on their fellow posters.

We are all just trying to make things interesting until camp.

Hows about laying off the thumbs down unless a comment truly deserves it.

Josh Jacobs: "“Being able to leave a legacy is something that I think about now, being older. Playing playoff football and obviously trying to get a ring is the only thing that’s really on my mind.”

I suspect that getting paid at $12 per season should be included in that statement. To do otherwise is disingenuous in my opinion.

However, I hope to see Jacobs go out and help bring in a Lombardi Trophy and earn that $12 million in the truest fashion.

The guitar player behind money for nothing and chicks for free routinely spent 4 hours getting the microphone placement just right, to get his sound.

Totally disagree that having career goals is “disingenuous“ because of the amount of money you make. NFL players make what they make. I don’t expect them to apologize for it, or to work their gratitude into every conversation. Grumbling about athlete salaries is petty.

Looking forward to watching this guy play in Green Bay. Obviously I'll miss Aaron Jones but Gute went out and improved the RB room this offseason IMO which at the end of the day is what mattered.

Jacobs can do it all. He's Jones AND Dillon rolled into one and then some. He has more than enough power to pick up a 4th and one and more than enough speed to go the distance on any handoff. Leaving the same guy out there for any situation makes MLFs offense even more dangerous.

I'm not ready to say anything about a comparison between #33 and Josh Jacobs. What I WILL say is #25 has been the hungriest player on the team, and he and Josh "go way back." In Josh I just don't see someone who will temper Kesean's fire; I HOPE they elevate each other and that fire spreads through the locker room!

Honestly I do not care which RB does what and I'll say the same for our WR room. I just want my Packers to beat all comers - to a pulp.

GPG!! (14-3 is doable, and so is the Lombardi)

There's been lots of excitement over Marshawn Llyod (deservedly so) but it seems like the Jacob for Jones scenario kind of turned people off from getting excited about him. Jacobs will be "The Man" at RB this year so he's the back we want to become a fan favorite by his play. If he's got additional incentive to get the Packers to Playoffs and the SB that's great!

Now look at our O line. Is any rookie really going to "be the man," or will we see second or third year players earn some spots?

Again I do not care and make no predictions. I HOPE that this staff gets its act together, determines the "best 5" appropriately which they have failed to do for at least two years running, and results in an O line that is DOMINANT all the way across, pass or run. This will make a bigger difference than anything a RB can do, and likewise for JL10 or any of his targets.

When I say "GPG," it is with acute awareness that it truly does begin with MLF and filters down throughout the coaching staff from there (including the new strength and conditioning coaches that I was very vocally in favor of, right or wrong) before a single player can do anything at all.

GPG!! I want this to be the beginning of a DYNASTY.

Does anyone else find it ironic that Davante Adams left GB and went to Oakland to work with a QB he thought would bring him a ring? And then the team trades said QB, the Raiders lose, and Adams gets to watch the Packers get one game from the championship game in Love's first year. Meanwhile, Aidan O'Connell is the Raiders projected starting QB, with Gardner Minshew the backup. The grass must be looking much greener in Wisconsin right now.

I totally agree with your comment but to DA he wanted the money, being geographically closer to his family and home, and I believe the city of Green Bay was not a big enough city like he desired.

Nevada= No State income tax. This was always going to be DA's last contract as he's not a burner and time will sap his moves and quickness eventually....most of AR's throws were lasers with a foot of separation tops. I do believe he thought his FRIEND in Vegas would still be throwing to him. Adams was always a gamer...too bad the Raiders ownership will limit what his stats could have been. If the ball was even close DA was going to catch it.

Dan Marino WAS one of the best QBs ever. It was not his fault that the Dolphins could not build a championship team around him.

Is there a Packer fan alive that wouldn't like to see a Packers/Jets Super Bowl with Jordan Love throwing four touchdowns and Josh Jacobs running for two more in addition to a 120 yard game? Throw in the Jets scoring a total of 13 points to cap off a Jeff Hafley outstanding first year as the Packers new Defensive Coordinator.

I'd rather see the Jets go 7-10 or 3-14, but the rest of your story seems fine.
