Confessions of a Polluted Mindset - Packers Schedule Release (mine)

The Weekly Packers Brain Drain from Jersey Al.

Of course, the genuine Packers schedule release happens today. Throughout the day, matchups will be released piecemeal until by the time the official NFL schedule release show starts tonight, you'll know most of the schedule. Diverting from reality for a bit, I thought it would be a fun exercise to construct a Packers schedule the way I would like to see it play out. So here goes:

SEPTEMBER

Game 1 Packers vs. Eagles in Brazil - ok, that one was easy.

Game 2 Bears @ Packers - The home opener is traditionally Alumni weekend as well, and no Packers opponent brings out the Alumni like the rival Chicago Bears. I can say this with good authority, as my first ever Packers game at Lambeau Field was Mike McCarthy's first game as coach of the Packers on Alumni weekend versus the Bears. The number of Packers Alumni lined up on the field spanned close to half the field. It was so cool, although the game was lacking, as a newly cobbled together Packers defense made Rex Grossman look like Joe Montana and Brett Favre played like he wasn't all there that day. 26-0 Bears. One other big reason to bring the Bears in for the home opener: Might as well waste little time introducing Caleb WIlliams to his team's owners.

Game 3 Packers at Titans -  After two games with a lot of interest, it time to dial it back and get into the season's groove. It's an away game, but one the Packers should have little trouble winning.

Game 4 Packers at Vikings. - Time to get the annual trip to the bird killer stadium ,where past Packers teams have struggled, overwith. But there are a lot of new faces in Minnesota, most notably, Kirk Cousins will not be behind center. Good to get them in their building while the season is still young and they're still likely figuring things out.

OCTOBER

Game 5 Texans at Packers - Two ascending teams with young ascending quarterbacks. A perfect Thursday Night showcase game. Book it.

Game 6 Saints at Packers. - Green Bay finally gets to stay at home for a second consecutive week as the cap-decimated New Orleans Saints come to town led by Raiders castoff (and Davante Adams best bud) Derek Carr. Good time for an easy game.

Game 7 Packers at Seahawks - For the first time in quite a bit, the ever annoying Pete Carroll will not be chewing gum furiously on the Seattle sideline.Their defense looks to be solid, but overall, expect this season to have them in "reset" mode.

Game 8 Packers at Rams - Los Angeles should be delighted to have the Packers visiting them for a change after three straight season coming to Lambeau. Unfortunately for them, they can likely expect a very large contingent of Packers fans to take over their stadium.

NOVEMBER

Game 9 Packers at Bears - Two years ago the Packers had three straight road games and this season the punishment returns. If it has to happen, I won't mind it as much in the middle of the season, as it means I'll be saving some home games for warm weather teams in December in Green Bay. This feels like a Sunday Night rivalry game, assuming the Bears haven't completely stunk up the season.

Game 10 Colts at Packers - A meh game sandwiched between two rivalry games. Possible trap game.

Game 11 49ers at Packers - This will be a Monday Night showdown between the Packers and their main nemesis of the last decade. Many are predicting this to be a Christmas Day game, which would be exciting, but I'd rather just be chilling that day/night.

Game 12 Packers at Lions - Thanksgiving game. I have lots of Packers/Lions Thanksgiving memories and it's time to make a new one when both teams are good for a change.

BYE (Week 13) - Of course, this would never happen, a bye week after playing on a Thursday, but hey, this is my schedule and I can do what I want.

DECEMBER -

Game 13 - Cardinals at Packers - Time to give the desert team a taste of chill in the air and a cold-hearted beatdown by the Packers coming off their bye week.

Game 14 - Vikings at Packers - This is a good time to pick up a division win before their showdown with the Lions.

Game 15 - Packers at Jaguars - For once, the Packers get a break and travel to Florida in December when the weather is not so oppressive and energy-sapping.

Game 16 - Dolphins at Packers - Ah yes, let's give those South Beachers a taste of Green Bay in late December. Do they have winter coats?

JANUARY

Game 17 - Lions at Packers. The NFC north title is on the line with both teams sporting identical 12-4 records, this is a "winner takes it" game. The drama. The excitement. The pressure. I can't think of a better way to end the regular season.

On to the playoffs!

Go Pack Go!

You have us playing the Bears 3 times (in weeks 2, 9 & 10)? I like it, but it seems unlikely.

Do they get an extra game against the Bears from all the interest they earned for as long as the Packers have owned them?

They're just starting the triple A players for a mini bye.

SWEEP THE NORTH!!--Especially those three Bears games and then things will work themselves out. I can see a few bumps in the road, but this time on Defense, until the new scheme, of Hafley's, is learned and embraced by our young defensive players. Our Offense will be cooking with gas. No worries there, IMO. GO PACK, GO!!!

I suppose at some point the annual strength of schedule chatter in preseason will turn out to bear some resemblance to how it looks by November. There’s a first for everything.

Al I know that this is your schedule and that's fine but you left Colts game off of your schedule. Maybe that is one of your three Bears games. In any case your schedule is a good diversion at this quiet time on the NFL calendar. Thanks, Since '61

We get a break from those pesky Gents who always beat us. Very difficult for a Pack fan living in Jersey.

Al, are you trying to jinks the Packers? There's no such thing as an easy game against any team, let alone the Saints.

Maybe you're predicting that this season they won't play at their opponent's level that they've had the habit of doing.

I fixed the issue with the Bears being listed instead of the Colts for game 10 - copy and paste error. We do not play the Bears three times - even in my imaginary schedule.

I mean i'd be good with it. but I would at least like the 3rd game to be a home game. Though there is something to be said about kicking their asses twice in front of their fans.

Copy and paste is a great time saving tool...for the most part.

"Introducing Caleb Williams to his new owners" was a pity comment extraordinaire! It was terse and full of meaning. Well done.

cwilms - couldn't agree more.
A great time to wipe that million dollar smile off his face, hopefully it rains so we can put some mud in his digestive system. A reminder that there are mean, talented and motivated players not only in GB but all over the NFL just waiting to kick his butt.
The sunshine and cameras will not help him in the nfc north!
Sorry, I'm not sure why I don't like the guy?
Yes I do, he's the cubs' qb1 and a punk.
In Al's awesome review, he recognized the introduction of the cubs' new owner, but he missed cwilms' introduction to our new LB's and Safeties, which I am very much excited to see.
These matchups will likely have a lot to do with wins/losses/ownership over the next 5 years IMO.
GPG!

With any schedule I always look for certain things.

First when is the bye. Preferably somewhere around mid season.

Next is holiday games. I dislike holiday games, but especially Christmas. The NFL deciding to take over Christmas really pisses me off. I get it when its on a Sunday. But this year its on a Wednesday and they are going to now have games on Wednesday? I am hoping GB does not play that day.

Division games are always the most important. Who do they play before them and when do they play them.

Another thing I look for is the flow of the games. How many road games are there away in a row.

For me its basically about the flow of the schedule. Its not always about who you play but when you play them.

"Next is holiday games. I dislike holiday games, but especially Christmas. The NFL deciding to take over Christmas really pisses me off."

If it means that I don't have to sit around with the fam watching hideous, mid-season, going-through-the-motions NBA games on Christmas, I can be a little more accepting.

"For me its basically about the flow of the schedule. Its not always about who you play but when you play them.'

This is pretty much the key, RC. Looking back, the Packers got the Lions and KC last year during stretches when they weren't playing great football and the Packers capitalized--we can argue whether it was more about their opponents than it was about them, but DET ended up in the NFCCG and the Chiefs won it all.

This slate of opponents looks tougher in 2024 than the one the Packers got hot against in 2023--but it's easy to push interpretations of schedule around in May. Last year there were plenty--myself included--who felt that the 2023 schedule didn't look that daunting, and that was with a Minni team coming off a banner year and an ascending Lions team. This could be a year where the Packers play better and look better, but it doesn't add up to a big change in the win column.

yeah I just like to have the one day a year to spend with family. (good family I like). Now that being said, if I had to spend it with the in-laws. I would want the football games lol.

Every year people are either excited or disappointed with the schedule release. For me I don't worry about who they play as much. Every year teams you anticipate to be good, turn out bad and vice versa. You can't plan when teams have injuries or when they aren't playing well. But there are some things that make a big difference. One example. it appears the Packers will play the Lions the Thursday after Thanksgiving. If the Packers would play Sunday, they would have 4 days between games where the Lions would have 7. Those little things can make a difference.

I really like your timing on the first matchup with the NFL team from Minnesota, Al. Their fans will have recovered from the Wolves playoff exit after being up 2-0 on the Nuggets, the Twins lackluster season, and the Lynx exercise in futility. The Wild will be off to a miserable start on their season, so the Packers can roll in to remind Minnesotans that while they may have a snazzy new State flag and legal weed, we still have the superior football team. Amen.

Agree. Every NFL week I want two teams to win...the Packers and whoever is playing the Ugly Purple. Twice a season it is the same team.

Texans at Packers: This game deserves a prime time slot, easily the most intriguing non-conference game on the schedule. Looking ahead to the upcoming years, you never know, this could one day be a Super Bowl match-up.
