Packers New Defensive Voice: Zaire Franklin
Packers add versatility, experience and football IQ with addition of Zaire Franklin
By Luke Leavitt
Versatility. A key word that new Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon has emphasized through his NFL coaching career. Specifically in his lone Super Bowl trip in 2022 with the Philadelphia Eagles. Being able to play different coverages, different fronts, all depending on who the matchup was against led to an NFL top defense that season.
With the NFL Free Agency signing period officially beginning next Wednesday, March 11th, the Packers have made the first step toward shaping their new era of defense, trading for Linebacker Zaire Franklin.
Gannon and Franklin were previously together with the Indianapolis Colts from 2018 to 2020, where Gannon served as the defensive backs/cornerbacks coach. It is safe to say the first move of the Packers off-season in terms of acquiring talent, and it being a player at one time on the same team as Gannon, is no coincidence.
Franklin is a downhill enforcer, high-IQ, high-motor linebacker who relies on swiftly identifying plays, forcefully filling run lanes, and acting as the defense's communication center. He is regarded as one of the NFL's most dependable second-level defenders due to his exceptional tackling volume, aggressiveness, and leadership.
Comparing Franklin to the now more than likely departing Quay Walker could simply come down to instincts, and discipline. Although he has plenty, Franklin's game favors play recognition and anticipation over athleticism. Quay Walker's game came in splashes, which saw great highs, and also very lows. You could make the argument of the two player's career, Franklin sees it faster, while Walker may get there faster.
Franklin takes over as the new mike linebacker, a veteran who knows how to lead. A player who dawned the captain badge for 6 years, this move also shows Green Bay's willingness to bring in veterans. With Walker departing, the defense needed a new presence guiding it.
To introduce his plan to Green Bay, Jonathon Gannon will look to utilize players who are proficient in the system and who can help explain the plays and language to the other players both on the practice field and in the meeting rooms.
Perhaps one player who caught Gannon’s eye coming into the league, catches it again now in their first year in Green Bay. The Packers defensive identity truly could change in a move like a trade for Franklin.
With Micah Parsons, Devonte Wyatt, and Lukas Van Ness up front, and Edgerrin Cooper alongside Zaire Franklin in the middle represents a hungry bunch with a tenacious motor that really could make Green Bay a nightmare to match up against. Franklin's ability to cover will only help Gannon be able to mix up how the defense operates week by week.

Offseason moves are unpredictable in how they pan out, look no further than comparing Green Bay’s 2024 offseason signings of Xavier Mckinney and Josh Jacobs up against their 2025 class of Nate Hobbs, and Aaron Banks.
Having prior experience working with players beforehand certainly helps that uncertainty. Jonathon Gannon could look to announce his presence to Green Bay in resorting to those that already know what it takes.

I would have kept Quay Walker/Wooden first.
The packers just got slower sideline to sideline.
And Indy got the A grade while dumping salary.

I would have kept Eric Wilson last year over McDuffie, but now the die is cast with a DC bringing in one of his guys and this is a solid year for LBs in the draft. He will probably look at CB with the #52.

I don't think that CB will solve the holes just created.

No doubt about it. He has to bag a solid veteran DT/NT inn free agency. Wyatt is a three-tech. Maybe he hits on a DT with the #52, or moves up in Rd Two for Hunter, but we should know better.

I think we should trust Gannon on this one

Why Gannon last coached him 6 years ago? That is longer than most players careers.

But isn’t Quay gonna cost about $15mil per year?

Of course you would have. Whatever Gute does, its a mistake in your eyes. Let us know your grade after the season.

Franklin was going to get cut. At his best he was an AJ Hawk type: a ton of tackles, but almost always behind the line. He’s been dependable and pretty good at getting forced fumbles. His ability to read gaps is probably better than Walker has shown, but his speed is not. Better instincts, less physical talent. Not at all good in coverage. Overall similar complaints as Walker has generated, but without the hoped for upside (as yet unrealized).
If we are lucky we get slightly better (more consistent play) this year than Walker provided last year. If not, he’s depth or a cut. You do not want him out there on passing downs: his coverage is not good and he’s never threatened a QB as a rush option. I do not see him being a true 3 down player of choice at this point.
He’s an insurance policy backstop with Walker leaving. He had no guarantees left, so we aren’t tied in to rostering him. I do not see it as inevitable that he makes the team ultimately, unless perhaps McDuffie moves on, at which point he’s the experienced depth at worst (and probably better overall).

Not so sure Coldworld , the videos I have seen on him displays Quick-twitch explosive type plays including penetration into the backfield, Im sure its his best stuff but to trade a DL for him must indicate that Gute really likes him ... A little on the older side but durable ( Please no comparisons to AJ ) lets not destroy his mantra before he gets here.

Franklin 54 STFs 23 PDs, Walker 31/17 in the last four seasons, speaks for itself.

Statistically, Franklin has outplayed Walker in just about every way over the last 4 years.

So? The key is he is limited in coverage and he is older. Not that I wanted to keep Walker but I really did not want to see the Packers give up another run stuffer DL and restructure contracts to do it.

What I see is a tackling machine, smart, TOUGH, and a leader. Walker had lots of flaws, not the least of which is not being able to cover. Wooden will be replaced.

He has been a pretty good player, Indy has had a pretty good defense and he was a big part of it. Gute knows Walker was leaving so they got a guy who is cheaper and can take the spot for a year or two.

Sounds like Walker was leaving in free agency and the Packers got proactive here. Don't love the move as they just got older and slower but not sure what options they had on the table. I would have preferred getting younger but this guy can play. I suspect they will make a move for a NT here soon as well.

Yes—the key is he can play…and at a high level.

I think virtually all the Packers' picks in this draft will be DT, CB, and OL.

I find it odd that the Packers want to replace their number one tackler on defense and then think it will improve the defense. I am very skeptical of this . Time will tell. Hope I am wrong.

Walker led the Packers in tackles because he was the starting middle linebacker in a 4-3 defense.
In terms of comparing him to other players across the league who played MLB in 4-3 defenses, he was about dead middle of the pack in total tackles for the year.
He's an average starter. No more, no less.

Right —quay was no superstar—and very few creative turnovers.

Agreed. I'm not familiar enough with Gannon to know what position he favors as the communicator in his defense. Zaire Franklin was the communicator in Indy, he's a vet and considered to be highly instinctive.
Probably as good of a guess as any without knowing if Gannon favors LBs or Safeties to get his defenses lined up.

I’m jazzed about Franklin—he’s a stud and an upgrade over Quay. He creates turnovers; our defense could use a few more of those.
Now go get Calias Campbell and/or another upgrade at CB. We should have some cash to do so.
Go Packers!!!

Franklin may be older and a step slower than Q. Walker but he may also bring leadership qualities to the Packers defense which has been sorely lacking on then defense. His experience can make up for the difference in age and speed versus Walker. He could be a solid bridge player at LB until the Packers draft a longer term replacement at LB. I cannot see the Packers paying $15 million to Walker at his level of performance. If Walker has a higher ceiling he should have reached it by now. Thanks, Since '61

I see this as pretty close to a wash at a much cheaper price in the short term, based upon past performance. Franklin is older, but has better instincts and more experience but not the physical talent.
Assuming he can rebound somewhat from last year (with a new DC whom he apparently didn’t mesh well with), Franklin may actually be better than Walker was last year. That buys us time to find and develop options for the future.
If Franklin does struggle, we lost nothing. There is no more guaranteed money, so he’s not locked into the roster by that. We can walk away if he struggles. Wooden is not a fit with a 3:4 base except as a DE, and he wasn’t productive in that role previously. It’s a good move in a holding sense, if not a solution. We plausibly maintained our approximate quality of last year at the position while incurring very little risk.

I have unpaused my off-season vow of silence - as I view this trade with some interest. I don't think that Franklin will overtly move-up / move-down the Quay Walker LB floor and/ ceiling. However he will be about 50% cheaper than Walker - which speaks to salary cap management. Also, a harbinger of Rashan's Gary future with the team?
