Around the NFC North: Week 3

Here's what's happening this week and next with the teams in the NFC North.

Talk about regression. The Vikings have now lost three games that they would've luckily won last year. The Packers won in the exact same way that they lost last week. The Lions turned it around against the Falcons. And, well, the Bears still suck, but we expected that.

Vikings

The Vikings lost 28-24 to the Chargers.

Game Notes

  • With a defense this bad and a receiving corps this good, Kirk Cousins could end up with 5,000 pass yards this season. With today's 367 yards, he's now on track to hit 6,000. Of course, it didn't matter. But if you give Cousins a full season of basically garbage time with the best receiver in the NFL to throw to, he could set records.
  • Speaking of the best receiver, Justin Jefferson nearly put up 150 yards for the third game in a row (he had 149). He projects to 2,600 receiving yards, which is even more insane than 6,000 pass yards.
  • It's all thanks to the team's trash defense, which upped the blitz rate again today on the way to giving up 405 yards and 3 TDs to Justin Herbert, which included 18 catches for 205 yards (and one pass for a 49-yard TD) to Keenan Allen. Keenan Allen lost offensive rookie of the year to Eddie Lacy, that's how old he is. Giving up 18 catches and 200 yards to him in the year 2023 is like giving up 150 yards and 3 touchdowns to the circle button in the year 2023.
  • Who will end up with more yards? Kirk Cousins and the Vikings' offense? Or the teams they play?

Former Packers

  • Dean Lowry didn't record a stat.

Next Week

The Vikings may have a get-right game against the Panthers. Let's hope not.

Bears

The Bears embarrassed themselves in front of Taylor Swift.

Game Notes

  • You know what's worse than the Vikings' defense? The Bears' everything. The only way this game could've been worse is if it hadn't happened on the same day as the Broncos giving up 70 points.
  • After a week full of Justin Fields drama where he blamed his coaches and then he blamed the media, he put up an 11/22 for 99-yard performance. He at least had some rushing yards this week, though outside of one long run of 17 yards, he only averaged 3 YPC.
  • It's hard to find a bright spot for the offense. All 10 points came in garbage time. DJ Moore only caught 3 out of 6 targets. The running backs were OK? I guess?
  • Now, the defense. Pat Mahomes had a yawn-worthy 272 yards, 3 TDs, and QB rating of 127. 10 receivers caught at least one pass. On the Bears' side, 0 defenders had at least one sack.
  • The Bears spent a ton of money on their defense this offseason. They brought in several free agents and draft picks and the defense is still trash. Hard to fathom that they can do anything other than fire everyone this offseason.

Former Packers because saying former players who have Wisconsin ties would be too long but we include former Badgers anyway because there aren't enough former Packers to make this section interesting on their own

  • Marcedes Lewis and Bobby Tonyan have combined for zero catches on the season. MVS had a 37-yard catch for the Chiefs.
  • TJ Edwards had an insane 17 tackles and Jack Sanborn had 3 tackles and a pick. Leo Chenal had 3 tackles for the Chiefs. Big game for ex-Badgers linebackers.

Next Week

The Bears take on the Broncos in a battle of ineptitude.

Lions

The Lions beat the Falcons 20-6.

Game Notes

  • Last week, the Packers played the Falcons really well for three quarters and then had some sort of collective lobotomy in the fourth quarter. The Lions did the same thing minus the 4th-quarter choke job.
  • In the offseason, I wrote an article (too embarrassing now to link to it) ranking the NFC North QBs minus Jordan Love. I had them Fields 1, Cousins 2, and Goff 3. It looks like I may have had them completely backwards. Fields is obviously the worst of the three and probably the worst QB in the league and Goff has been the best in the division so far.
  • Goff was 22/33 for 243 yards and a one TD and one pick. Not a life-changing performance, but the Lions are protecting him and Goff is doing enough week in and week out to get wins.
  • Jahmyr Gibbs won the battle of rookie running backs with 17 carries for 80 yards next to Bijan's 10 for 33.
  • The defense looked pretty good too, unfortunately. Aidan Hutchinson had 2 sacks, 2 passes defensed, and a forced fumble. Brian Branch had 11 tackles, including 3 for a loss. Even the Sun God got into the fun with a tackle on an interception return.

Former Packers

Nada.

Next Week

The Packers and Lions play on Thursday night.

The Bears play the team that gave up 70 points and are still the underdogs.

Looks like the Vikings need to roster more X-Packers. 82% blitz rate????

We scored 24 points on Atlanta and the Lions scored 20. Makes my prediction for the game Packers 24 Lions 20.

Russell Wilson is still a better QB than Fields. That’s it.

Discounting rookies, can you name a starting QB worse than Fields. I can't off the top of my head.

Zach Wilson's pretty bad...and not nearly as able to make things happen with his feet.

Yeah, I guess now that Rodgers is hurt he's the worst, but the "starting" to me is not a firm tag.

I like your logic T7, but what if we go half empty?
Lions 25 - Pack 13.
No I like yours better.
Without knowing who's avaialbe this week, it's really hard to predict scores. See my past three weeks, though only off by 2 last week.
My guess is 23-20 Pack.
My money, though not a better, would say kitties by 3.

Cue Rodney Dangerfield "I don't get no respect, I'll tell ya".

And the Bears don't deserve any right now. They're bad. Worse than a year ago. But when you're the underdog to a team that just gave up 70.....well, if you have any pride at all, you take that personally.

Brian Flores, with all that "talent" in Minnihaha is "blitzing" for answers. The D cupboard was so bare, his only plan is to try to disrupt plays before they get started. (Perhaps Mr. Flores will be available again next season for DC.)

The Lions played solid D but Ridder couldn't make plays. Had to settle for a FG inside the 10.

Even then, the game was just 13-3 starting the 4th.

I like our O vs the Lions D. I really like our O if Jonesy returns. And if Watson and Bakht return I really, really, really like our O to score enough to take pressure off the D.

That number--82% blitz rate--means he blitzed on about 38 dropbacks.

They got one sack.

Amazing, isn't it? A truly flummoxed Flores. I will bet he did not expect a weak D to be weakened even further by the Minnihaha GM.

Had this fantasy: Aaron Rodgers could 'retire' from the Jets. The Vikings will likely unload Cousins after this year. Rodgers could then sign with the Vikings and the complete 'circle of life' could be had, taking the same path as Brett Favre.

Sorry, my blood sugar is low.

Ways Rodgers is like Favre:
Franchise QB
Super Bowl winner
Multiple MVPs
Hall of Fame career

Ways Rodgers is unlike Favre:
Takes care of the ball
Doesn't want to "stick it to the Packers"
Doesn't try to steal welfare funds for personal pet projects
Doesn't sexually harass massage therapists

Each of them won one Super Bowl , the year their team had the best defense in football. Just like Trent Dilfer.

As a lifelong diabetic, no need to apologize for the low blood sugar. Get yourself a tablespoon of honey, grab a chair and a magazine, and get back on your feet.
Don't butcher me for this, but I wouldn't mind if we completed the circle even tighter and had Cousins pulling the trigger here.
Accurate, patient, plays within the system, durable and seems to be a good leader.
I don't want his salary nor his occasional brain farts, but you have to tip your hat to the guy, no matter how hard that is for me to say.

The Packers should never acquire former Vikings. They'll have that purple taint, and we don't want that in the building. Avoid the purple taint.

The vikes' GM wanted to trade him last year, but no takers with his contract and age. I hear the Jets are now interested but I don't think they have the cap space.

Looking around the NFC... JSN with 9 catches for 57 yards

With the benefit of hindsight, I wonder how the fan base views the draft decision now to take LVN over JSN? Wicks, Reed and Musgrave all look promising, while JSN is struggling to earn snaps on the field.

JSN was out almost all of last year injured.

He was impressive for OSU 2 years ago - even with Olave and Garrett on the team - he dominated the slot that year.

I'm interested now - thanks - I'll have to go back and watch the SEA game to see those targets. I'm keen to see how he was used........ as stats can be misleading, Reed's stats will say that he dropped some too, but he (and his compatriots) caught the ones in succession that counted (they weren't some one off wonder catch that still ended in a 3 and out for a drive).

That said, I still like the LVN pick. He will be a good tandem with Gary.

Well, poor Luke Getsy. In over his head, or just no talent. I thougt the Bears would have issues when these are the ex-Packers that made their roster:

Equanimeous St. Brown
Robert Tonyan
Marcedes Lewis
Lucas Patrick

EQ was a healthy scratch on Sunday. Lewis and Tonyan have each played a little and Tonyan has had a total of one target. Patrick has at least been playing.

For the life of me I don't understand how Equanimeous St. Brown is still on an NFL roster. Coming into this year he has 58/rec and 2/TDs in 5 years. This year 0/rec, 0/Targets, 0/TDs, at a salary of $1,165,000.

Is this a great country, or what?

"Well, poor Luke Getsy. In over his head, or just no talent."

A little bit of both and a lot more in between.

JT O'sullivan has been very hard on Getsy this season when reviewing Fields games. One perfect example is they had the TE off the line next to the RT (in the way of the RT as he moves outside to block the Edge/DE). Sure enough the snap happens and he takes one step and bam the TE (who just stands up on the snap) is in his way. So the TE then moves to the left to go around the Tackle and run a route. Of course the DE follows the TE and gets around the RT for an easy sack of Fields. Who calls a TE Screen on their own RT? JTO was astounded at the formation and scheme and he had multiple negative comments about many plays. He also was very negative about Fields as he missed open receiver after open receiver and even missed check downs to scramble or get sacked.

I think Poles wants to move on from Fields, but instead of running an offense to suit his strengths (planned runs and play action), they seem to be proving that Fields will never be a pocket passer and in the process destroying any trade value. The entire offense is a mess. They were running TE screens and Kmet grabbed the ball and ran past his blockers and was tackled almost immediately. Blocking on the Line is abysmal. The entire offense is a mess from the OC down to the backup waterboy.

Fields is following Trubisky into the realm of long-term veteran backup...and, to be honest, I wouldn't be surprised if he turns into a very serviceable one.

There were some comments at Windy City Gridiron whether they should convert him into a Taysom Hill-like gadget player. Fields could be better than hill in that type of role, which give Poles the opening to draft his "Mahomes" QB.

Lions D is #5 vs run, #19 vs the pass. Packers O is # 22 running, #21 passing. Doesn't look good for stats but the odds greatly improve if Jones, Bakhtiari, and Watson all return. I like our chances for our O.

Lions O is #11 running and #7 passing. Packers D is #26 vs run, #10 vs the pass. Here is where I get concerned. Hopefully Alexander returns. The strength of the Packers D looks banged up.

We need STs to step up, big time. Two big time legs can flip the field and score points but not with poor coverage and stupid, undisciplined penalties.

Then turnovers. I think we can get them if Barry plays to his player strengths and pressures consistently with 5 on the DL and an occasional blitz. So much talent.

I fear he will again get skittish about stopping chunk plays...like last week's end of game D allowing the Saints to try a game winner. Big surprise. He's definitely consistent.
