Amari Rodgers Provides Big Time YAC Ability to Packers Offense

The Green Bay Packers will be adding a new and much-needed YAC ability to this offense with the addition of Amari Rodgers.

On the surface, the Green Bay Packers had a very good 2020 season when it came to producing yards after the catch (YAC)—although there wasn’t much that this offense did struggle with. Green Bay’s 2,248 yards after the catch ranked as the fifth most in the NFL—not too bad.

That overall figure might come as a surprise to you — it did to me — because when we think of this Packers offense, playmaking ability with the ball in their hands isn’t exactly what comes to mind first. And if we peel back that layer of fluff, we see that it was a fairly big need to address.

One contributor to the Packers' overall YAC total is that they have Davante Adams, who many would consider the top receiver in football. With 597 yards after the catch, Adams accounted for almost one-third of Green Bay’s total YAC. Adams' 597 yards after the catch were also the second-most in football last season, according to Pro Football Reference.

For some context, the next highest-ranked Packers receiver was Marquez Valdes-Scantling; his 241 yards after the catch ranked 80th. Now to be fair, I will point out that MVS’ 7.3 YAC average ranked 17th, but with Valdez-Scantling being a primary downfield threat, his YAC is much different than the YAC that turns a reception at the line of scrimmage into a first down. The latter is what has been missing from this offense.

Running back Aaron Jones ranked 31st last season in total YAC while Allen Lazard’s 5.9 YAC average ranked 39th. Again, not bad at all, but when looking at the overall success that this offense had producing YAC, a decent portion of the credit for that 2,248 YAC total could also be linked to Matt LaFleur’s offensive system more so than the individual playmaking ability that this team possesses as a whole.

LaFleur does a terrific job of scheming players open and creating ways for them to get the ball in space. This is reflected by the fact that Green Bay finished 29th as a team in broken tackles and 20th in missed tackles forced, per PFF. Thus helping to illustrate that the YAC accumulated is oftentimes due to the open space in front of the receiver rather than him making defenders miss.

If we look at a team like the Los Angeles Rams, who under Sean McVay deploys a similar offensive philosophy as LaFleur, they were only three yards behind the Packers in total YAC, but unlike Green Bay, Los Angeles posted 70 missed tackles forced compared to 45 for the Packers. LA also finished third in broken tackles forced and had two receivers in the top-10 in total YAC, rather than one in the top-79 like the Packers did.

As good as this Green Bay offense was last season, this ability to make defenders miss was a missing element. And I now use the term “was” because with the addition of Amari Rodgers in the third round of the draft, he will bring that added playmaking ability to this offense.

A big part of Rodgers’ breakout season in 2020 with Clemson was his ability to make plays with the ball in his hands. Of Rodgers’ 1,020 total receiving yards, 613 came after the catch, which was the second-most in college football behind only Heisman Trophy Winner DeVonta Smith.

Rodgers 8.0 YAC average ranked fourth out of 46 eligible receivers and was ahead of players like Kadarius Toney and Elijah Moore, who averaged 6.8 and 5.9 yards after the catch, respectively. Rodgers would also force 17 missed tackles, again ranking among the best as the seventh most in college football.

In 2019, Rodgers would tally 335 yards after the catch, and his average YAC of 11.5 ranked as the fifth most that year. The year before, he would record 405 yards after the catch, giving Rodgers a total of 1,353 YAC in his final three seasons.

While his 40-yard dash time at his Pro-Day of 4.52 seconds was nothing to write home about, don’t let that figure fool you; as evidenced by the numbers referenced above, Rodgers can certainly make defenders miss.

Andy Herman of Packer Report summed that up quite well in a recent article of his, also calling Rodgers a “true triple threat with the ball in his hands.”

“If Rodgers has the angle, he’s going to run by you, if your feet are planted, he’s going to juke and run around you, and if there’s no other option, he will absolutely run right through you.”

In addition to his overall elusiveness, Rodgers stands 5’9,” weighs 212 pounds, and is built like a running back. As Andy points out, if Rodgers can’t get around you, he has absolutely no problem trying to run through you.

In this Green Bay Packers’ offense, Rodgers will provide a true slot presence, something that the team hasn’t had since the days of Randall Cobb, who is oftentimes a player that Rodgers is compared to.

We will also see Amari used in that gadget role as the motion man and on designed touches such as jet sweeps and screens—all of which helps LaFleur achieve the “illusion of complexity,” as he calls it. This allows Green Bay to keep defenses off balance by running the same play from a variety of personnel while also having different plays start off looking similar, but they’re actually quite different.

As we saw last season, this Green Bay Packers offense did just fine without a true slot or gadget presence and someone who can consistently turn a quick pass into a 12 yard gain by making defenders miss. But that doesn’t mean it should have been overlooked either. Rodgers’ skill-set was a missing and needed element in this LaFleur offense that should make the NFL’s top-scoring offense even more difficult to defend.

Amari looks like a round peg for a round hole. A perfect fit for Matt LaFleur’s offense. Paul, the gadget might be a bigger part of this offense than stated here.

Seems to me we have too many Square pegs trying to fit round holes in our WR group, and I wonder if we don’t see bigger changes there for 2021? The Packers would be smart to keep at least two gadget/slot WRs on their roster this year, given how those concepts open up other things in LaFleur’s offense.

I’m curious how having a number of solid gadget players will help our O.

Amari, Reggie & Bailey. I’d have no problem seeing them make it this year.

Time to move on from low Catch% players at WR. If you’re not even sniffing 65%, there’s a problem. CTFB.

All depends on what you are asking a WR to do and where the player is on his development curve. Adams being a classic example of a player whose drop percentage started out very high. James Jones was another.

Slot types have the best shot at YAC, feed them the ball relatively close to the line and let them beat players and break out in the open. Here is hoping Rodgers brings some of that after that. He will need to hone his receiving skills to do more, but he’s used to being schemed open and given the ball in space and then doing it himself. We’ve needed that ability to compliment Adams’ since Cobb’s injuries hit him.

We agree gg. The first thing I want from our WRs is that they catch the ball. There are no YACs without the catch first. Guys with low catch %s after their frist or second season in the league need to be moved down the depth chart and or out.

I can see a solid receiving corps comprised of Adams, Begelton, Rodgers, Funchess with Lazard and maybe MVS as our 4th at best but more likely 5th and 6th receivers if we go that deep at WR. Add in Jones and Dillon out of the backfield and Tonyan and Lewis at TE and I think we have a very solid receiving group.

Thanks, Since '61

Hey Since'61!

Do you happen to remember a guy who posted on boards going way back called CTFB? CatchTheFuckinBall? That dude was fun. I think he played CB too, somewhere.

Anyhow, I agree with how this might shake out. I'm a huge Reggie Begelton fan. He's originally from Texas, played all of his ball there before going to the CFL and becoming a CFL All-Star. The guy is tough as hell, and it that legit QB's best friend type of pure slot WR. He owned the middle of the field. Thinking maybe he and this new UDFA Gutekunst signed, Bailey Gaither, would make excellent additions to our WR group.

If you get a chance, check out Gaither's highlights. WOW. I kid you not, he reminds me of a mix of Cobb and Jordy. Very sure. Good routes. 1st down machine.

Gaither is definitely another one of those QB's best friend types. Really fun player to watch. Seeing how our offense struggled last year when Tyler Ervin went down, I don't think MLF wants to be caught in that position again. PLUS, I wonder what he would do with two of those guys on the field at the same time???

Pretty exciting stuff.

That's why I'd like to keep all three of those guys around, at the expense of an MVS who after 3 years topped out with a 52.4% Catch %. EQ has a 53.8% Catch % after two seasons - same as Davante did, but ...?

Davante's worst season was better than that... he went 57 to 53 year 2, then in mid 60s until finally reaching an insane 77% last year.

As far as speed goes, Chris Godwin from TB has a 4.42 40 time... just an FYI for some. Gaither ran a 4.45...

I can't say that I remember CTFB. Except for a few posts at Packers.com several years ago I don't post anywhere but here at CHTV. Before I joined Jersey AL's ALLGBP back in 2010 I did due diligence on all the Packer blogs at the time and I decided that ALLGBP was the best of the bunch so I joined and then ALLGBP merged with CHTV and I've been here since.

I always liked that Jersey AL's and now CHTV has a strong sense of community which I did not see(feel) at the other blogs. Packers.com just has too many members and comments get lost in the mass of hundreds of comments they receive on each article.

I have a good feeling about Begelton as well. I hope he does well. As for Gaither, I don't know anything about him but I'll check out his highlights later this evening when I have some time available. Appreciate the link.
Be well. Thanks, since '61

I don’t get all the love for Reggie Begelton. I used to watch CFL and it’s a totally different game and very WR friendly. Don’t get me wrong, I would love to see him excel but don’t see him as an NFL type starter. But it’s a great feel good story and we all love the underdog.

"Seems to me we have too many Square pegs trying to fit round holes in our WR group, and I wonder if we don’t see bigger changes there for 2021?"

it's an odd year to try to predict how the roster will shake out due to contracts coming due and turnover (especially at WR and OL). I think there may be decisions made for 2021 that are decided by contracts (or lack thereof) for 2022.

"I’m curious how having a number of solid gadget players will help our O."

If you run gadget plays all the time, they're no longer gadgets--they're part of your regular offense. Defenses figure those out. So how many 'gadget' players do you carry? I'll admit, when Ervin got hurt last year, the offense lost that element even though he didn't get the ball all that much. Having one guy who does it as one of his key roles and a second who can do it if called upon keeps that viable. But as a friend who was a coach said, many gadget plays are practice-intensive and how much valuable practice time do you invest in plays you don't use very much?...and how much would that be compounded if you were trying to get multiple gadget players and multiple gadget plays ironed out?

I have no issues with MVS' catch % of 52%.

Why? Because if you consider his average yards per catch (I think around 20), you would get a first down every time he caught the ball. Thus you only need 2 downs to get your next first down, leaving you with one extra down if you wanted to try something else (run?).

I know it's not that simple... but for purposes of illustration, I think this is worth noting.

Would it be better if MVS upped his game? Definitely. But then we would not be able to pay him :)

Literally throw to MVS 8-10 times per drive and we should be good. ;-)))

All kidding aside, I do think he could realize a stellar season with JL at QB, the more I think about it. The pressure seemed ridiculously high for perfection w AR. You could see it in MVS’s play.

Tellin’ ya, This could turn out to be really good with some roles on this team changed. Can you see Aaron Jones becoming more of a team leader with Tae? What does that do for this offense? Bakhtiari. Jenkins. Team leaders. Change can be good. Sometimes it just needs to be embraced.

You think they want to win a Super Bowl, even if Jordan Love is our QB? Oh, HELL YEAH!

Let's just thank MVS for playing lights out in the NFCC game. If not for him we would have a pretty poor offensive performance. There are some you tube videos of him running routes this offseason. I think he wills himself to being a better pass catcher and overall better WR. Seems like a nice kid and does his interviews with his dog. Gotta like that. I'm pulling for him. I was pulling for EQ also but he kept getting hurt and slipped down the list. Was really hoping Sternberger would show up like his A&M tape showed. So far he is MIA in skills, abilities and especially availability, surprise us Stern....ML has TE's stacked like cord wood.

Boring that we agree so much but this is another one.
IMO they really did lose something w/o the gadget play aspect. it plays straight into your point of having a few guys that can play that role. Also allows for competition to find the best and have depth. With the lessened need for WR in this scheme maybe there can be a few Gadget types though I'd like to see one be a RB to better disguise. Hill maybe as the 3rd string RB. IDK

I'm much higher on MVS than I see on this thread. Man. I so agree on #1 catch the damn ball, nothing happens w/o that but it is part of the game and MVS is a legit weapon who has actually played big in big games. But ya, after so long a rec needs to have a certain drop rate to see the field/roster.

The #1 culprit that wasn't mention on YAC was tonyan. His was 102nd in Yac/rec for rec (WR,RB,TE). Its one of the reasons I'm not all in on him. hey, he had zero drops and thats good enough to be my starter if your decent at the rest but IMO shows he is possibly a product of the system and AR.

Well since your handle is coach, how's this example. In HS our baseball coach had us line up to bunt or hit and run. If you missed any pitch for anything you ran to the fence and when you got back went to the front of the line to repeat the cycle. Let me tell you, after a couple times the ball was as big as a dinner plate and the coach had 110% of my attention on every pitch. It would do the same thing for a WR. He would be in really good shape and catch the ball near every time.....We were State Champs, BTW. GPG

Congrats on the State Championship, no small task. great drill as missing the ball on a hit and run or bunt can be very costly.

That said fundamentals are fine tuned in practice but unfortunately the game can offer differences in both mind and physical aspects. Between a batting practice pitch and in game pitch physically and the pressures of running vs letting down your team can be miles apart. Your coach did what he could allowed his players the opportunity to hone the skill through practice and coupled that with some in game type pressure.

I'm sure MVS get the reps and its probably not focus but just a mental (pressure) issue. Best cure for that, at that level, is opportunities and success until his confidence is no longer an issue. Can the packers afford to go through that process? We will see...

Amari has a small catch radius and struggles with consistency when catching contested passes. He also struggles getting off the line and needs to be lined up off the line or on the move to gain the advantage when running routes. =1 Scout! I doubt he'll be that huge impact immediately. So I'm on the," Lets take are sweet Time with him." If he can't handle the punt returns. Push the reject button. Giving up a 3rd and 4th was questionable.

Stockholder, I don’t think many of us were considering him to have a “Hugh impact” in year one. You are kind of stating the obvious. Not many 3rd round WR draft picks do.

That said, he is very elusive with the ball, but does need polishing and would like to see him block better. I watched 4 games and his highlights and saw things to be excited about and others where you realize he needs to work on. Most of the Packers great WR’s took 2-3 years to get up to speed, so patience is a virtue.

He is used to running slot routes that get him in space. He’s good at that. He’s not been used as a classic WR much, so yes, will have to work on that, but he’s damn effective being in the slot. That’s what we want. He’s more advanced as a catcher than Cobb was coming out (less so as a ball carrier).

Amazing, we actually drafted the kind of guy you’ve been lamenting the lack of and you whine that he’s not a Jennings type.

I’d get that SHE dial unjammed.

I think his initial work will be on WR screens, flares, flat passes, etc. I think he'll get to run the sweep action. All of these things will help spread defenses out and force them to defend the whole field. His tape shows him running enough routes off the perimeter that he can line up there and be more than a decoy--which will be valuable if there are injuries.

Ultimately, the question will be one that LH brings up, and that's if he blocks enough to be part of the rotation and get more than just 8-12 gimmick snaps per game this season.

"Amazing, we actually drafted the kind of guy you’ve been lamenting the lack of and you whine that he’s not a Jennings type."

You know how it works...it doesn't matter who BG picks or what's been said here before, it's automatically the wrong guy.

I've got a service call in on our SHE gauge...hopefully they'll get that functional again. It's just not built to operate under these extremes.

Rodgers starts in the Slot day 1. Maybe you should try watching some Clemson tape and see what everyone but you can easily see. He's gonna be good. Plays faster than his time. Has good RB vision to get missed tackles and extend catches for more yardage.....at least that's what my eyes see. You're pretty negative, Nancy. I used to save that for Pettine, but he is gone now. Gute says Amari Rodgers body type would hold up better in Green Bay football weather later in the season. Aaron Rodgers is pissy with Gute, and he has not picked a #1 WR like I would have, but Gute has improved the overall team quite a bit, especially on Defense. I like this Slot guy and our new DL and our #1 pick at CB. We will have a better team this year....Exceptional if Aaron is QB....Good if someone else is.

Good stuff.
I agree that they should be better. Not only because of Amari but JD will be back and that opens up another set of plays in the playbook just as the gadget guy does. Sure I liked Jamal W but he is no AJD. These guy is going to make his presence known. Can you imagine him against Nickel and Dime Defenses (light Box) let alone against stacked boxes (thats all he saw at BC)
Don't be surprised if Amari doesn't get as many snaps as one may with with JD and the 12 formation running attack/play action game in play. So many options.
Sure Amari isn't a blazer but that stout lower half hopefully keeps him from the injury list like so many smaller gadget/slot players. It should be a worthwhile tradeoff.

But I temper it all with Bakh and Meyers health and performance. losing CL hurts but with those two guys healthy it will certainly minimize the loss.

Matt LaFleur will find plenty of ways to scheme Rodgers open and let his RAC ability shine. Another underrated part of Rodgers game is his ability to use the “dead leg” when being tackled, If you watch his film this led to a lot of yards after catch. Also one thing you notice when watching his film is when he gets the ball immediately plants and heads north and south he wastes no time, this makes him play faster than his 4.52 Time. Amari Rodgers is going to be an outstanding player for Green Bay for a long time. He’s a perfect fit for Matt LaFleur‘s offense.

If you look at New Orleans, their offense--out of necessity based on Brees' declining arm strength--is a catch-and-run offense. They have two players (Thomas and Kamara) who excel at it. If you look at Davante Adams, he's become a catch-and-run guy: most of his receptions are fairly short (he averaged about 12 ypc and 5 yac in 2020). None of the other Packer regulars at WR are RAC guys. I think adding AmRod is a natural shift to either support an aging QB or to provide options to a young QB who will need checkdowns.

A young Cobb in a possibly more appropriate system. Durable, able to carry out of the backfield in a more credible basis than we have had since in the option type role and take hits. Seems like a good fit conceptually and has a great attitude.

Very good article. When you combine special teams and his offensive niche, Amari may have more of an impact in his first season than people think. If he absorbs the offense quickly and catches the ball consistently, then I'm seeing manageable third down conversions without having (or choosing, depending on who our QB will be) to rely on Adams so much.
