After Further Review: Packers vs. Ravens (Preseason)
By Ross Uglem
Ross will provide a few observations every Monday afternoon following a Packers game based on a few viewings of the condensed version of the game on NFL GamePass. While this might not be the All-22 camera deep dive that might be more "educational", it should provide a conversation point for the rest of the week.
The most frustrating thing about Kizer's inability to make things happen on that first drive wasn't the excellent KOR by Shep, it was just how clean the Packers 1st team OL kept him against a very good Ravens front. pic.twitter.com/MoWtvXz7mT

This is literally the next play. I love @CB_Savage18. Want a hot take? I'll give ya a hot take. Bolton's the second-best linebacker on the roster when everyone's healthy. pic.twitter.com/bbzaPq1Ou2

Try to track Shepherd through the whole play. This is a second reaction play and the "instinctual ability" Gutekunst refers to when talking about him. Rodgers loves football "feel" like this: pic.twitter.com/4p5tozxvVX
— Ross Uglem (@RossUglem) August 16, 2019
Allen Lazard played really well. I think he's gonna make a roster, it just won't be Green Bay's. They'll go with a safer, lower-upside option like Allison or Kumerow (or probably both).
Tyler Lancasater had a nice bounce-back game.
Keke is a stud.
#Packers have something in Keke as a one-gap penetrator. pic.twitter.com/90rsKq7FkH

They, like Michigan, need to figure out how to unlock Rashan Gary. I didn't see it in this game at all. Now Baltimore, maybe more than any team in the league with Jackson, RG3 and maybe even Trace will run the hell out of the ball, so pass rush wasn't going to be an emphasis here, but good lord. I just need to see something like what I saw in the five practices I saw in Green Bay. What I've seen on film for two weeks is why i had the opinion I did about Gary. What I saw in practice is why I thought I was wrong. I need to be wrong about this.
I'd like to see stronger hands from Tonyan. He's an enormous dude. That needs to be his football.
Not up in here!

Being a Michigan Wolverines fan and having watched a ton of Wolverines games, I never dreamed that he would even be drafted let alone in the first round.
I was totally shocked when the Packers took him at the 12 spot.
His highlight reel was very very short.
I don't expect much from him.

He's not a bust yet, hasn't played a meaningful game. Also hasn't shown any pass rush moves or an ability to move quickly in space. And those were the raps against him predraft. As for his vaunted strength, he's been easily handled by opposing OL so far, even his push gets him nowhere. Why why would you take a guy with so many question marks at #12? There was just no way to justify picking him that early when there were so many quality players on the board. Dumb.

It would be best for him to work the stunts and edge moves in practice and put on minimal film for the opponents. He has to be brought along at a steady pace.

Now that Amos play is FUNNY! As for receivers, I'm liking 7. Its about time to quit this 'maybe that draft pick works out' and just keep the guys who are performing. Shep, Laz and Kumerow. Davis has never impressed me as a punt returner and Shep seems to have that juke Davis doesn't. And I'd rather have a slower big WR that gets open and makes catches than the big fast one who doesn't (J'Mon). Neither Shep or Laz would make it to our practice squad. J'Mon just might.
And by saying Bolton is the second best backer on the team, I assume you are referring only to the ILB's and not the Smith twins.

Did you break down our starting run Defense ? I'm curious to see what went wrong, especially up the gut on our base run D? I hope the run D performance last night was just a fluke.
I was happy to see Lancaster bounce back. If he can play like he did in the second half of last season, he would be a good option on early run downs next to Clark.
Very happy with Bolton's performance. Very encouraging. Hope he keeps up the good play.
Looking forward to see what our offense looks like next week with Rodgers and Jones in the lineup. I believe they will move the ball effectively and score.

Ross - do you think this is something Gary is ever going to learn?
To me it looks like he has no suddenness. He's either full speed right into the bull rush or full speed with one hand swat around the tackle. Zadarius is the exact opposite. He sets his guy up, makes a sudden move and then follows through with power.
Its almost as if he doesn't have the equivalent of a route tree. i.e. he doesn't know what body movement and kick stride will get a guy to commit outside and then go inside or vice versa. He doesn't know how to knock opponents hands away while making his move and following through and he doesn't know how when to attack at at the moment a tackle is mid-stride in his back kick.
He's doing the same things he did 3 years ago at michigan. there's just no nuance like the way Winovich plays - which is scary, cause he played with him for 3 years and apparently didn't learn much

No doubt they analyzed every Michigan snap. At some point, Pettine had to have said, “I know what to do with this guy.” They must have discussed it for weeks. If he doesn’t work out, where exactly did they go wrong after so much work.

On the flip side, Josh Allen was a productive terror in college and i checked out his tape for the first 2 games. Couple flashes but mostly unimpressive.
So maybe I won't write either off just yet :)
Burns' 2 sacks were flukey so its not like he's showing out either.

No, there is just one cutdown, from 90 to 53 on August 31, wait for waivers on September 1 (making claims as warranted - these guys have to go on the 53) and then scramble to sign 10 PS guys.

I feel Gary will make some plays and get his 5-8 sacks. Really thought starting OL was solid. Agree Bolton is 2nd best ILB. He’s a feisty dude with high motor. Shepherd is just a baller, he’s everything his highlights showed. He’s definitely a keeper. Team will be screwed if Rodgers goes down. Kizer has no touch, not that accurate; Boyle would even be more ineffective going up against real-time defenses

We need to have patience with Gary’s progress. He came out a year early and he’s played part of 2 preseason games.
Clark was a first round pick drafted a year early. Does anyone remember his first 2 preseason games. I didn’t think so. Yet here we are expecting Clark to be our best DL at least, if not our best defender and hoping the Packers don’t let him near FA.
I’m not saying that Gary will become as good as Clark but he might. Whichever way he goes it’s way too early to expect Gary to make the HOF in his first 2 preseason games. Let’s give him a chance and see where he is at by his 3rd season.
As Packer fans this is a time for patience with both our new HC and our young players.
Thanks, Since ‘61

Kenny Clark was the 27th pick in the draft. Rashan Gary was the 12th overall pick Since 61'. The Packers fortunately/unfortunately don't pick that high that often. Gary is suffering what we in Cheeseville refer to as AJ Hawk syndrome.

Sorry Jonathan I can’t give up on a player after 2 preseason games. I need to see where he’s at after a couple of seasons. I have seen too many players break out after their second or third season in the league.
There is no reason to give up on a player at this point in their career. To do so is just being unfair and unreasonable. Thanks, Since ‘61

Sorry Since 61 bit where did I say to give up on Gary anywhere in my response to your post? I said fans have unrealistic expectations just like they did with AJ Hawk. Gary is a boom or bust pick so fans will be quick to call him a bust. I saw Gary being disruptive while facing 2 elusive QBs. I want to see what he does against the Raiders.

Actually we have no idea how Gary preformed.
What were his assignments? Was he supposed to attack or hold the corner? Was he free to use his discretion or assignment sure?
We do not know.
But here we have physics that know all. I am taking classes now. I'll be challenging those "all seeing" soon.

August 16, 2019 at 07:42 pm
First, Gary will be fine. TC has shown he has the ability to make plays. He's not in a position where many rookies shine right away. Green Bay plans on platooning him w/ Zman and he will hit stride during the season.
I'm sorry to say...I think Kizer is going to take more years before he could be a viable backup. Can/will the Packers reserve a roster spot for him? I think they will take the cheap route and look for a replacement and use Boyle as Rodgers back up until a backup shows up

Pretty much EVERY TEAM has a crappy backup QB. I doubt Brian Hoyer could carry New England; or Blake Bortles could carry the Rams; or Cooper Rush could carry Dallas; or Nate Sudfeld could replace Wentz in Philly.... Jacksonville lists some dude named Gardner Minshew as their backup QB for crying out loud! All teams are screwed if their QB goes down. There are barely enough good starters.

Exactly... I've felt all along we need to give Kizer some TIME. He's still as young or younger as some QB's being drafted this year or next. A THIRD offense in THREE years...I'm just wondering who the Packers are supposed to go get or is available who's better than Kizer. Again, keep in mind before judging him...3rd offense in three years.

All I want out of Gary this year is see some playing time, progress steadily, learn how to be a pro from Zadarius, soak up as much as he can, go into next offseason all the better and come back next year ready to be a starter. And stay healthy. Really didn't think he was going to be JJ Watt right away.

“The run blocking was fine”???? What game were you watching???? I previously thought that pre season games were just a waste of viewers time. But after the Ravens game I gained a new perspective. The Ravens are an upper echelon team. The take away each and every young Packer player should have by playing the Ravens was: how to tackle, how to play call, how to run the ball, how to play for 60 minutes, how to hold your area of responsibility (lanes)... in short...what it takes to be a good team.
Gary has got to be injured. He’s played extensively in two games and his play, to be kind, was underwhelming.
A tough learning lesson but hopefully a learning lesson nonetheless.
La Fluer. Better coach this team up... in the next two games or it is going to be a long season when we play the upper echelon teams.
I can’t get down on the back up QBs. The played one of the leagues best D’s.
I don’t know who it was on the Ravens D that sacked Boyle... but it was a class act that he didn’t break him in half on the sack... unlike a guy named Barr!!!!

I agree the Ravens were the more physical team and I was frustrated watching as well. I have to remind myself that this is a pre season game in a league where these games have become glorified scrimmages. It’s like having a bad practice.
Regarding Ravens upper echelon team, they have a bit to prove as they are a .500 win team over 4 years while barely making the playoffs last year and lost first game. Sure they look great in two pre-season games but they don’t translate to regular season wins.

Hallo again! I would use this order: voluntary/rookie OTAs, mandatory minicamp, then practices, then padded practices, then scrimmages, then preseason games, then the 3rd preseason game, and finally, real NFL games.

I am happy Lancaster played much better. The Packer D-line needs him to be good after cutting Daniels. Keke continues to impress and I hope he sustains that through the preseason.
The Packers need to find a RB soon or MLF's run predicated offense is going nowhere quickly. None of the RBs I have seen are impressive and Jones is still injured. Supposedly Jones is practicing so I hope he returns soon (and is the answer).

He needs more than one grip. He needs to figure out the game basics. Harboob plays pre season to win. the packers don't. the mental and emotional edge that provides is a big big difference. So gets a to sell tickets and keep his job with 15 straight wins in meaningless games.
Last year changing QB from nearly the most extreme examples of runner v deep passer and getting the huge benefit of changing O mid season and not allowing tape to be studied got them the playoffs.
Outside the career year the old QB had how well has win the preseason worked out?
