A Last Look Back at a Packers Season Gone Awry

The front office has a lot of work to do, including at head coach

Things sure felt different on Saturday night at around 11:30 than they did when the final whistle reverberated through Lambeau Field on Dec. 7. The Packers had just beaten the division rival Chicago Bears 28-21 and sat at 9-3-1 on the season.

They had dispatched the rival Detroit Lions, who’d been consistently beating up on Green Bay in recent years, not once but twice, and looked like a potential NFC North champion and a sure bet for another double-digit wins season.

And then these same Packers bumbled and stumbled their way to four straight losses as injuries to key players piled up, the offensive line at times looked lost, special teams woes continued, and the defense laid an egg in an overtime loss in Chicago, adding insult to injury.

Less than six weeks since that 9-3-1 record hinted at a team turning the corner and eyeing a playoff run, and now we’re discussion which unrestricted free agents will walk in free agency, and we’re even facing the (however remote) possibility that suddenly-maligned head coach Matt LaFleur might actually be traded rather than extended. It's a lot to swallow after hopes were so high following a trade for EDGE rusher Micah Parsons just ahead of the season. That feeling seems far in the rear-view mirror this week.

Even as I began writing this, I took note that Packers beat writer Tom Silverstein had quoted a pair of unnamed NFL agents as taking some shots at Green Bay’s front office, with one calling the Packers “a little bit of a mom-and-pop organization,” and another essentially saying that the Packers should, to phrase it mildly, go or get off the pot when it comes to LaFleur. In other words, if they’re all in with the coach going forward, show it – don’t try to play hardball over money or contract length. The feeling out there is that LaFleur is the one with leverage in this negotiation, frequent early playoff exits notwithstanding.

And let’s face it, there are plenty of issues this Green Bay team has to face up to. First of all, how on planet Earth does special teams coordinator Rich Bissacia still have a job? LaFleur is still technically under contract, so is he waiting until the extension negotiations are over to address that situation (or let a new head coach deal with it)? Or does he somehow believe no change is needed in a unit that has been costing the Packers games for the better part of a decade?

Meanwhile, will either of the Packers’ starting cornerbacks ever be bothered to tackle? We saw Carrington Valentine whiff on more than one occasion this past season, looking at moments simply too timid (or lazy) to wrap up a ball carrier. And when Keisean Nixon isn’t busy missing an assignment, we then get to watch him hop out of the way of a Bears running back who is driving into the end zone. In a playoff game, no less. And didn’t the Packers pay big money to some guy named Hobbs in free agency? Or did we dream that?

The offensive line is yet another mess, in no small part due to the lingering injury to Zach Tom. There’s talk, and real reason to think that Elgton Jenkins will be jettisoned this off-season. It seems like only yesterday that he was anointed the Packers’ center of the future. Rasheed Wallace seemed hellbent on getting quarterback Jordan Love killed at times, and it might have been at its worst during that playoff meltdown against the Bears last Saturday. And as long as Packers running backs keep getting hit before they even get to the line of scrimmage, the run game isn’t going to get back to its effectiveness from 2024.

The good news might be that Jordan Morgan was beginning to look like he belonged in the starting lineup as the season progressed. If Tom can come back healthy and Anthony Belton can take a step next year, that will help the situation as well. Nevertheless, that position group, much like special teams and the cornerback room, will need to be addressed. It needs continuity, continuity that is impossible when the injury bug keeps nibbling away.

And with that, I’m going to officially close the book on the highly disappointing 2025 Green Bay Packers season. Maybe I'll read a book. Or watch a movie. Collectively, let’s let the front office do its thing and let those Packers players, injured and otherwise, clear their minds and rest their bodies. Hey, the NFL Draft is just four months away – not that the Packers have a first-round pick.

OK, now I’m really finished. I promise. Starting … now.

" we then get to watch him hop out of the way of a Bears running back who is driving into the end zone"

I knew I wasn't the only one to see that. Everyone here (at home) told me no way.

Kevin - enjoy your time away.

Nixon and Valentine have to be the worst starting cornerback tandem in the entire NFL. Incredibly hard to watch .

And yet they both outplayed Nate Hobbs.

Gutey gets a lot of love, but everyone knew that CB room was arse before the season and it turned out to be even worse once the games began.

No rhyme or reason to snag Hobbs after they spent a # two pick for Bullard, a rover back to sit in the slot.
The money pumped into Hobbs and Banks, another epic fail.

I just saw that more closely last night. A detail I hadn't really seen watching the game live.

What the hell does "Mom and Pop" mean in regards to what's going on at 1265. Before you take these two writers seriously, who are they and which axes are they grinding. I learned along time ago to be careful of Packer beat writers as some like to "stir the pot"

I think a lot of these problems (which may appear to be amateurish) goes back to Murphy'. Now Policy has to goes back and "untangle" this mess. There have been and may still be issues between Ball, Gutekunst and La Fleur. Some of these problems may have 'slipped down" to the field of play....wouldn't surprise me.

Look back only to read the future?
History will repeat itself if we don't learn from it and make the NECESSARY changes. Have we learned nothing? This organization has gone backwards 3 years straight. When I heard there was talk of EXTENDING LaFleur's contract I wanted to send in a missile strike. THAT'S NOT CHANGE !!!! That's adjusting. Do we want adjustments? NOOOOOO !

As a Packers fan since the 60s it makes me sick to think the Packers want to extend a coach who doesn’t deserve it . Watching Lombardi , Holmgren , and McCarthy build great teams over time and win Super Bowls helped build a legacy and maintain it in Green Bay . Titletown used to refer to Championships now it’s a tubing slide . Barely making the playoffs is good enough for management and most of the fans .

Notes, speculation, and rumors:

I don't know if the Packers are a "mom and pop organization", but coming from an agent I wouldn't put much stock in it.

Once again, I have no idea, but maybe everything with the brass was on cruise control until the last five games--and then oops, we'd better do an about face and come up with Plan B. And maybe a restructuring of the front office as well.

It's been speculated that the hang-up in the MLF negotiations is contract length and the job security that comes with it. The MLF camp is probably milking the impressive regular season for all it's worth and therein is the supposed the upper hand. We can only hope our president is smarter than that and is playing hardball. That way he can say he did all he could, all the time plotting a change in course. That would be indescribably wonderful.

It's been rumored that MLF is helping the Rams prepare for the Bears under the table. After all, he is friends with McVay and his brother is the OC. But it still feels unseemly that he may be doing this. The resulting comments/advice were funny, though, like "Try playing the second half."

There is absolutely nothing unseemly about giving the Rams advice on how to better beat the Bears.

Nothing.

I have no problem with MLF helping the Rams , if your Mate and Brother asked for help I am sure you would give it . Also I don`t think he`s in there game planning more bouncing ideas off .

Since he is 1 and 2 against the Bears, perhaps they just wanted to make feel better.

Here’s how it goes: MLF tells McVay what he would do and McVay does the exact opposite. It’s called the Costanza Method.

At this point - I'd rather not look ahead through the rear view mirror because I'll just see the same recurring images.

What has me really non-optimistic about the Packers future is Rob Demovsky's comment - that the Packers are leaning into stability above all else. Stability is just code for status quo - which means that the pursuit of SBs won't be a top priority. Just like in the last 25+ years.

Perhaps the hang-up in LaFleur's contract is that the Packers want to pay him for only two quarters of each game - which seems to be his coaching threshold.

Stability like Tomlin had in Pittsburgh, 19 straight winning seasons collapsed when losing playoff games became a stable part of his record. Who would have thought their loyal fan base would be calling to have him replaced, not many BUT IT DID HAPPEN. If Policy extends MLF even for a shorter period of time and we see 1 or 2 years that look like his last 3 years, the Packer fan base will be horse from screaming.

All of this could have been avoided if Policy evaluated poss GM's over the course of the offseason. He could have asked for input from many NFL sources.
He already primed us for a possible change. Interview well-respected GM candidates like other grown-up teams do (after vetting them), let them guide you as to who the HC should be. Believe in them and give back proper authority to them.

Neither Gute nor MLF are good enough. All of this could have been avoided. Policy had a chance to really make a difference. He is now only tinkering around the edges with a fairly mediocre coach who cannot figure out how to adjust (x 7 years). So many mediocre men ''leading' the Packers-GB is in need of a strong visionary leader.

Hopping out of the way of a charging ball carrier !? Did not see that one . That shows a complete lack of effort and no worries about repercussions from the Head Coach on down . Move on from the current staff . Replace Nixon .

I didn't really see that part either but did last night, watching a film breakdown on YouTube. It's possible #25 sidestepped him after he already broke the plane, but that doesn't explain why he didn't aggressively charge the ball carrier first. This was the winning TD IIRC.

Hmmmm.......things are much better now that we got rid of that problem!!

The front office largely has stayed the same. Hmmmm........
