5 Things to Watch in Packers at Jaguars: Can Love Play a Clean Game?
Jordan Love has thrown an interception in every game so far, can he stay clean in Jacksonville?

Can Love play a clean game?
The Jaguars offense has shown signs of getting back on track after a slow start, but the defense, and more specifically the pass defense, is irredeemably bad, mostly due to a lack of talent in the secondary.
Only four teams have allowed more yards per game than Jacksonville, only two have allowed more points per game, and just one has given up more passing yards than the Jags so far this season.
The run defense is faring better, ranking sixth in the NFL in yards per game allowed, so the onus will be more on the Packers passing game to dominate.
Love is yet to get through a game without throwing an interception this season, currently leading the league with eight.
The one pick he threw versus the Cardinals two weeks ago was pure bad luck, with Bo Melton’s slip causing the turnover, and it is Love’s performance against Arizona, easily his best of the season, that he will be looking to replicate this week.
That game was not some careful, risk-averse performance from Love, and the Packers will not want their QB to lose the swashbuckling style that makes him special, but that does not mean the interceptions cannot be cut down, as Love showed down the stretch last year.
With the weapons at Love’s disposal, and likely a lower level of defensive resistance to face, as long as he is protected, Sunday could be an eruption game for Green Bay’s quarterback and pass catchers.
Games between the Packers and Jaguars have tended to be close, Jacksonville is not as bad as their 2-5 record, and they have won back to back games, but the Packers are the better team.
If they are to show that definitively, it will start with the quarterback, and facing a defense which has only come up with one interception this season, it is time for Love to have a game where he stays clean and doesn't throw a pick which could keep the opponent in the game.
Josh Hines-Allen and Travon Walker
The key to letting Love and company cook on Sunday will be keeping the quarterback upright, and while they may not have much to lean on defensively, the Jaguars do have players capable of threatening that goal.
Hines-Allen racked up 45 sacks in his first five NFL seasons, including a huge 2023 in which he took the quarterback down 17.5 times. He usually lines up against the left tackle, meaning Rasheed Walker is likely to have his hands full on Sunday.
On the other side, Travon Walker presents a danger as well.
The Jaguars drafted Walker with the first overall pick in the 2022 draft, taking him ahead of Aidan Hutchinson (which Detroit Lions fans are very grateful for).
Walker has not exactly justified that selection given Hutchinson’s excellent NFL career so far, but he did register ten sacks a year ago and already has six in 2024. Zach Tom will not be in for an easy afternoon.
It feels like the pair of edge rushers taking over is the only thing that could derail Green Bay’s offense this week, so keeping them in check will be a priority.
Rashan Gary vs Anton Harrison
The Packers meanwhile are still waiting for Rashan Gary to round into form after an uncharacteristically quiet start to the season.
Jeff Hafley did a good job of moving Gary around last week, rushing him from the interior at times, evoking memories of Za’Darius Smith stalking the line of scrimmage and isolating a weak link.
It meant Gary was able to impact C.J. Stroud, and Green Bay’s star edge rusher also had a sack of the Houston quarterback after the right tackle slipped.
Last week was a nice changeup to crank up the pressure, but the surprise factor will now be gone, and Gary simply needs to start winning more regularly.
Up against right tackle Anton Harrison this week, who is PFF’s 61st graded tackle out of 76 qualifiers, he will have a prime opportunity to do exactly that. It is time for the real Rashan Gary to stand up.
Brian Thomas Jr
Part of what has made Jacksonville’s early struggles on offense is that they have useful pass catchers for Trevor Lawrence to utilize. Christian Kirk and Evan Engram are solid pieces, but rookie receiver Thomas is quickly becoming the headline act.
A first round pick out of LSU, Thomas is almost 6’3”, weighs 209 lbs and runs a 4.33. To put it another way, he is big and fast. The question for the Packers will be, who do you want on him?
Jaire Alexander is of course Green Bay’s best corner, but the size discrepancy could cause him some issues. Eric Stokes has requisite size, as well as the speed to run with Thomas, but he is not playing particularly well and has lost outside corner snaps to Keisean Nixon.
Nixon is still new to playing on the perimeter, and is also not the biggest corner. Thomas could prove a tough assignment for him.
If Jacksonville’s pass catchers get open, Lawrence is more than capable of finding them, and Thomas has the ability to create separation and explosive plays at any moment.
Packers punt coverage
In Green Bay’s last matchup with Jacksonville back in 2020, they allowed a 91-yard punt return for a touchdown at Lambeau Field, as Keelan Cole took a JK Scott boot to the house, with the punter failing to lay a finger on him as the last line of defense.
Last week in London, Parker Washington returned a kickoff for a touchdown, helping the Jags on the way to a 32-16 victory.
Rich Bisaccia’s special teams unit has been below average once again in 2024, ranking 27th in special teams DVOA through seven games. They will need to be on full alert this week to avoid a potentially game-altering play in the third phase.

I cursed at my TV set way too much the last game with QB1 making a really crap throw INT....and a highlight reel throw next. Way too much ups and downs trying to give a game away like we did the S.F game and others. Cards game was best by far for consistency and the INT was a dime that Melton slipped on which was not on Love at all.....Most of all we need consistent play from QB1 throughout the whole game and that means everyone from OL to WR routes and blocking for the run game from everyone. Looking foreword to everyone stepping up game after game to show everyone who we are this week and this season. GPG

The Jaguars have only one INT this season, so if there was one game where you would think Love can avoid a turnover, this would be it.
The Jaguars have not won back-to-back games, but two of the last three. They are returning from their second home in London.
Good grief, the Jags have a RB (Tank Bigsby) averaging 6.2 yards over 67 carries, so run defense better show up.
As stated, Love should be able to chew up this secondary as long as he's protected. Most people are expecting this game to be a score-a-thon, so let's see if our defense can continue its momentum.

I've read in a couple of places that the Jaguars have won two in a row, so thanks for correcting that. In between their wins, they lost to the Bears 35-16. That was their first of two games in a row in London. Who thought THAT was a good idea? Maybe it's the NFL's way of punishing them for being such a disappointment last year. Also, I think their fan base is less solid than most, and they don't draw well in road games. Might as well send them to London.
Anyway, I am one of those who is expecting a score-a-thon, but I would much prefer a one-sided victory for the Packers!

The Jags' defense have allowed the most passing touchdowns of any team in the NFL and intercepted the fewest passes of any team in the NFL.
Given all that, if Jordan is intercepted tomorrow and throws less than 3 touchdown passes it would be a surprise.
That said, only 3 QBs this year are throwing more interceptions per pass attempt and Jordan is tied for the NFL lead in interceptions thrown, despite having played 2 less games.
But don’t worry fellow die hard Packer fans, all is not lost – just study the case of Christian Watson’s fellow North Dakota State alum, Carson Wentz – Howie Roseman knew what to do – Wentz was gone in less than 2 years after signing in June 2019 what was then a record NFL contract in guaranteed $$$ - just like Jordan.
And Wentz, unlike Jordan, had a track record of 3 years of solid performance as starter:
3rd in NFL MVP voting for the 2017 season, behind only Brady and Todd Gurley.
Selected to the Pro Bowl for the 2017 season
Selected as 2nd team All pro
2016 as a rookie - 2.3% interception rate
2017 33 Tds and only 7 interceptions, 1.6% interception rate
2018 21 Tds and only 7 interceptions, 1.7% interception rate
having led the Eagles to a Super Bowl winning season (which Nick Foles finished) when the Eagles General Manager Howie Roseman made and extended that record contract in March 2019 .
And Wentz in the months after he signed that record guaranteed contract had 27 Tds an only 7 interceptions and his lowest interception rate - 1.2%.
But then Wentz led the league in 2020 in interceptions and more importantly was 2nd to last in interceptions per pass attempt with 3.4% - and Roseman knew what do to.
Spring of 2021 Roseman traded Wentz - who was still under that MASSIVE contract through the 2024-25 season - to the Colts.
Jordan’s performance to date also reminds one of Jameis Winston at Tampa Bay from 2015 through 2019 – it is on the same trend line – lots of TD passes offset by lots of interceptions - the only differences were that Winston could run.
And like the Packers now with Malik Willis, the Eagles had a dual threat more athletic and situationally aware and fundamentally sound QB waiting in the wings in Jalen Hurts.
Many Packer fans, having watched Jordan in college, saw just what we saw much of last year - including in the Packers most important game of the year in San Francisco against the 49ers in the Divisional round with the game on the line, just a quarter and a 1/2 away from the NFC Championship game against the Lions - and are seeing again this season. We all saw it coming in the future, from the moment Gutekunst drafted Jordan in April 2020
Gutekunst could do what Roseman did with Wentz and then Hurts, but Roseman had a track record of success as General Manager and Executive VP of Football Operations - having won a Super Bowl - that Gutekunst does not, thus, if Jordan takes the Packers down, Gutekunst will ride with Jordan as the Packers go down, taking what was a 13-3, 13-3, 13-4 team on the brink of Super Bowls since the moment Gutekunst took over in January 2018 down the drain.

One thing these anti-Jordan Love people have in common is they are extremely long-winded.

For those who don't know much about Tank Bigsby, I said before the draft that he reminded me of Aaron Jones. After seeing him play in the pros, he reminds me even MORE of Aaron Jones. Stronger than his size. Excellent at seeing the field. Slippery around tacklers.
