5 Takeaways From Packers 14 - 24 Lions: Green Bay Beats Themselves, Again
The Packers have to stop hurting themselves if they are going to beat quality opponents.

The Packers beat themselves, again
Green Bay continued a disturbing trend of making everything way more difficult than it needed to be on Sunday, constantly tripping over their own feet in a game where they could not afford to.
In a massive divisional game at home, the Packers had six dropped passes, many of them in crucial situations, and ten penalties, many of which either cost them points on offense or led to points allowed on defense.
Early in the season, these issues could have been explained away as rust the players would eventually kick off. It is week nine now.
It is especially frustrating that Green Bay’s two biggest stinker’s of the season have come in NFC North battles at home. They simply did not come ready to play against either the Vikings or Lions and are now 0-2 in the division.
Matt LaFleur is an elite offensive mind and play caller, but his team lacks fundamentals, focus and discipline. They are unserious, and against quality opponents, they have been exposed.
For all the talk about how a rainy, windy Lambeau Field could unsettle the road team, it was Detroit who had all those things on Sunday, and that is the sole reason for their victory. The stronger, tougher team won the game and took their rightful place atop the NFC North.
Barring an unexpected sea change, the Packers will have to settle for fighting it out with the Vikings – who leapfrogged Green Bay with a win on Sunday Night Football – for second place and a wildcard playoff spot.
Some Packers defensive players spoke this week about how the Lions like to embarrass opponents and run up the score, and how they were not “going for that s**t”. As it turned out, the Lions did not need to punk the Packers, they did it to themselves.
Progress is not linear
After their terrific performances down the stretch last season, taking them to the divisional round of the postseason, it would have been easy to assume the Packers, who are still the youngest team in the league, were a rocket ship, only set to soar higher in 2024.
That has not been the case. While there has definitely been progress overall, especially in the team’s ability to grind out wins in a way they were not able to do in the early stages of last campaign, Packers fans have been confronted with the sobering reality that progress is rarely linear.
The penalty problems which plagued them early have not noticeably improved, and players who seemed primed for a breakout season have stalled.
Dontayvion Wicks is the poster child for the latter. Arguably the best route runner on the team, the second-year receiver appears to have developed a case of the yips, struggling badly with drops, not unlike Davante Adams in his second year, if you want to spin it positively.
This continued on Sunday, including one which would have been a touchdown. But it is not just Wicks, the quarterback is in a slump right now too…
Jordan Love has to play better
There are plenty of extenuating circumstances which help to explain Love’s underwhelming first half of the season. Whether it is the multiple injuries he has suffered, or receivers dropping passes too regularly, there are certainly some things working against him.
But the bottom line is that Love simply has to play better than he has been. That needs to start with cutting out the devastatingly bad plays which have cropped up too often this year.
Other than the fact he was not in his own end zone at the time, his pick six thrown to Kerby Joseph was almost identical to his ill-fated pass against the Rams back in week five. It was avoidable and completely unnecessary.
He is now up to ten interceptions on the year, only one less than he threw in the entirety of last season. Reminder: He has only completed six games this year.
Anyone questioning whether the Packers made a mistake signing Love to a long term contract needs to calm down, but there is no doubt Green Bay needs the Jordan Love of the second half of last season to return again for the upcoming stretch run.
Don’t burn the tape
After an embarrassing performance such as yesterday’s, fans justifiably want to wipe it from their memory Men in Black style and move on as quickly as possible.
This has already led to plenty of calls to “burn the tape”.
While that makes sense… Don’t burn the tape, watch the tape! Improve from the tape!
Having one no-show game in a season is understandable, but the Packers have to start learning from these humbling losses and making tangible improvements. This is not the time to bury heads in the sand.
A good time for a bye week
Entering their bye, Green Bay is still in an enviable spot at 6-3. They are going to be a playoff team, all is not lost.
But if they want their trip to the postseason to be an extended one, they way they have played for the majority of the first nine games it not going to cut it.
They have come unstuck far too easily against strong, or even relatively strong opponents, and it is those teams they will need to beat in the playoffs.
All that really matters for the rest of the season is figuring out how to cut down on the mistakes and sloppy play, so they can put their best foot forward at the most important time, in January.

Mark I could not agree more.
MLF is now one of the longer tenured coaches and this lack of fundamentals, focus, and discipline is not a new phenomenon, especially in big games.
When it comes to big games, MLF's teams often play small.

Been going on for quite some time - if opponents do not make critical errors this team struggles mightily and nothing seems to get "cleaned up" when preparing for playoff quality opponents. Seems like the Tale of 2 Teams - looks like completely different team discipline and chemistry, based on the opponent, that is except for the quantity of penalties. The biggest mistake against the Lions was made before the game was started, when Love was designated the starter as it was clear he wasn't ready. Lafleur stated it was Love's call - really, who is the Head Coach ? Then why leave him go in the 2nd half when he clearly wasn't effective as well as struggling with injuries, the goal is to win the game not hurt someone's feelings right ? Just when I feel the train is chugging along with this team, the Packers lay a stinker that makes me question a lot more of the process than just game time decision making.

Looking forward to solid Packer victory today and expect that will be true.
The Packers have a good running game - 4.9 yards per carry, 8th in the NFL - and the Lions have a good running game - 5.1 yds per carry, 4th in the NFL.The Packers are 11th in the league in stopping the run (4.3 yds) and the Lions are 23rd (4.7 yds) in the league in stopping the run.
Packers have very good receivers and tight end and the Lions have the same but are missing a Key deep threat in Jameison. Packers have he edge here.
So as was true last Thanksgiving, Quarterbacks relative valuing of the ball and their turnovers will be the key today. QB situational awareness (time, down and distance, spatial awareness) and accuracy will also be critical - no hospital balls or balls on the ground or balls over the head or balls behind the receiver.
It will be that simple.
There is a reason Goff was the 1st overall pick in 2016 - selected over the 2nd pick Carson Wentz, who was 3rd in the MVP vote in 2017, played well for years, then signed a then record contract and was traded less than 2 years later. Goff is smart - that is sustainable. His 3 fumbles last Thanksgiving against the Packers was an anomaly for him - Goff will see to it that this doesn't happen again.
2023 - 272 regular season games and 13 playoff games.
2023 - In 53 games one team had a 3 turnover margin advantage - that team won 92.5% of the time.
2023 - in 57 games one team had a 2 turnover margin advantage - that team won 84.2% of the time.
2023 - in 113 games one team had a 1 turnover margin advantage - that team won 61.1% of the time.
If Jordan doesn't turn the ball over Packers win. If Jordan turns the ball over Packers lose.
No one else is regularly turning the ball over on the Packers.
Football Reference credited Jordan with the win against the Jaguars making Jordan's won loss record as a starter now - including 2 playoff games - 14 wins and 12 losses.
Just as in baseball I thought Jordan should get a "no decision".
The Packers were losing when Jordan opted out and it was Malik Willis that led the Packers to the comeback victory.
Jordan is now 5 wins and 10 losses when Jordan throws an interception - fortunate Malik was there as Jordan would have been 4 and 11 the way the game was going. . .
Jordan is 9 wins and 2 losses when Jordan does not throw an interception. Hoping for a 10th today."
Obviously I was right and Jordan is now 5 wins and 11 losses when he throws an interception.
This loss is 95% on Love. And the Lions win 95% on Goff.
The Gutekunst paid propagandists and those needing access to the locker room and 1265 Lombardi Avenue to make their $$ will continue to make excuses for Jordan - "rust", "injured", "receivers dropping passes", "poor protection", "poor play calling", "interceptions are ok" and sophist style comparisons to the "Gunslinger" Favre, without telling you that the only years the Packers made it to the NFC championships and Super Bowls were the years Favre had his lowest interception to pass attempt % percentages.
The overall season MISTAKE - Love (Love 32nd in Interception to Pass Attempt %, 4.2% - DEAD LAST) and ACCURACY statistics generated over 9 games on "smallest hands" Goff (1st 74.9%) and 7 games on Love (30th, 61.3%) cleanse us of the propaganda and bullsh*t excuses and leave us with truth and reality.
Of any position the QB has the greatest influence on what happens in the game.
The emotional swing and momentum swing the QB can create in such a physical adrenalin drive sport dwarfs everything else.
Once again, Jordan created that emotion and momentum swing with his idiotic play - Jordan is what he was when Gutekunst drafted him - the QB that led all of college football - FBS and FCS - in interceptions in 2019-20 season.
I feel sorry for Jordan, because he is a nice kid and pretty honest in his press conferences, including yesterday's after the Lions game - and he should be given the $75 million guaranteed signing bonus he walked off with.
I don't feel sorry for Gutekunst at all.
Gutekunst has destroyed what was a Super Bowl contender and pissed on and disrespected Packer veteran after Packer veteran, destroying team leadership and chemistry in the proceess - Gutekunst does that because he fears the power of veterans leadership in the locker room and he is insecure in his position as GM and knows he never deserved to be in that position in the first place.
Gutekunst makes these bold, head scratching, antagonistic, unpredictable choices in an attempt to offset the correct perceived reality that Gutekunst never played the game at any high level and has no idea of what is going on in terms of team leadership in the locker room and off the field and on the field.
"It is all about the people" - the fish out of water Gutkekunst doesn't get this . His couple paid propagandists in this commentary section go into hiding in the immediate aftermath of the obvious when reality is most clear. They will be back.
The Pack - the men in the locker room - wili also be back despite the propagandists and Gutekunst's destruction.

My faith in MLF is shaken. He seems like a great OC and mediocre HC. That will get you winning seasons and bounced from the playoffs when you meet a quality opponent.

I may be mistaken but when Stockholder says the "top" I don't think he is talking about Lafleur, but rather "Gutekunst".
Lafleur has to live with the Love Gutekunst gives him and the veteran leadership that Gutekunst alienates and takes away.
If it were up to Lafleur I am sure Willis would have started yesterday and Rasul Douglas and Aaron Jones would still be here among others.
All that said, despite Guekunst this Packer team is good enough to carry Jordan and Gutekunst and finish 10-7 or 9-8. This team and Lafleur would be 14-3 or 13-4 with an MVP QB and without Gutekunst. Goff's 3 fumbles last Thanksgiving were an anomaly, Jordan's interceptions are not - Jordan is as likely to lead the NFL in interceptions as he did all of college football in 2019-20. Jordan is as likely to play against the 49ers last year and Vikins and Lions this year as he was to do so against Joe Burrow and LSU.

You must not be familiar with the management structure of the green bay packers. LaFleur and Gutekunst and Ball are all at the same spot on the organizational chart, and Matt doesn't take orders from or report to Brian Gutekunst. Try to keep up with the team if you're going to come on the site and troll. You'll be more effective.

You must be unfamiliar with the reality of the world. Stick to your org charts.
The Reality is Gute drafted college football's leader in throwing interceptions and Jordan is now the NFL's leader in interceptions.
Gute is tied to Love at the hip, and cannot easily get rid of Jordan as Roseman did with Wentz less than 2 years after paying him what was an NFL record amount at the time because Gute has not won a Super Bowl as Roseman had already at time as Eagles GM.
Gute's reputation with veteran players sucks and it was clear as early as Jordy's comments on March 13, 2018.
The cancer in the Packers lockeroom is Gute - the players hate him.
Let's see what Gute does between now and end of day tomorrow.
True Packer fans know what I am talking about.

10 penalties, SIX drops, and a pick six explains a bad day at the office.
STs did not play well. More boneheaded, stupid penalties. How much longer does the huge investment in Bisaccia continue. Very poor ROI. SIX years in and Matt still is treating STs like the previous 5 years of Defense...with incredible indifference.
There is hope as Matt did FINALLY address Defense this year. The D again played decent. Without the pick SIX and missed FG, this is a different game.
Outside of Jenks rolling shotgun snaps on the ground, the lineup with Morgan, Jenks, and Rhyan inside looked good to me! For the most part, Love had a well built pocket most of the game.

In fairness to Bisaccia , it seems like the worst special teamer is Nixon. Dumb penalties and who can forget his muff/ fumble last year against the Giants.
He’s also a liability on defense.

Every couple of years here we hire a new guy who's going to "fix" special teams, and a couple of years later we fire him.
You want to fix special teams? Easy.
1) Don't return punts. What you gain in returns will never outweigh the cost you pay in penalties, turnovers, and injuries. Drop two guys back, one to field the punt and another to fall on it in the event something goes wrong. The other 9 guys watch for the fake and don't worry about blocking somebody in the back on a return.
2) Do not allow your opponent to return punts. Kicking higher and shorter or towards the sidelines will force a fair catch.
3) Go for two after touchdowns, unless you're a weak team offensively.
4) If your FG guy isn't automatic, or close to it, I think you're better off going for it on 4th down. We kick more FGs than most teams....hell, even with all our misses we're still 6th in the league in most made FGs!! Our RedZone TD% is among the worst in the league.
If we would just follow these simple guidelines, we'd be a lot less unhappy with our special teams. We're giving them too many opportunities to cost us, and they are.

The Packers offense simply made too many mistakes to win the game and couldn't reach the end zone until it was mostly too late. Sure, we were missing a couple of important defensive players, but how much of a difference would it have made when you're stuck on 6 until late in the fourth quarter?
Apparently the team did not do enough wet ball drills. It was known well in advance that this would be a rainy day.
As far as the "unserious" part goes, MLF needs to get Love to calm down out there and make the right play in the right situation. He needs to be thinking ahead and have a plan for every down sequence, contingencies included. If that means taking a sack or throwing the ball away, so be it. He throws too many balls up for grabs or in tight windows. Sometimes the receivers are able to make great plays anyway, but it's not something you can always bank on.

What we are seeing from Jordan is exactly why Jordan led all of college football - both FBS and FCS - in interceptions in 2019-20.
Many of us long time Packer fans going back to the late 40s saw this ASSURED current Packer CRISIS coming the moment "Gute" drafted Jordan, ironically right after Aaron Rodgers set the record in 2018-19 season for fewest interceptions in a season with just 2 for a QB with greater than 500 pass attempts and then nearly equaled the record in the 2019-20 season with just 4 in 2019-20.
We have gone from the most situationally aware QB in football to one of the least situationally aware QBs in football.

Why? We questioned paying Keasan Nixon all that money.. how has that worked out? We paid Jaire Alexander the big money and he gets burned with regularity, and can’t tackle or stay healthy. We paid Rashan Gary and he’s no longer a force .. almost since the ink dried.
I don’t want us to have a Daniel Jones situation on our hands. I don’t think Love is able to process what’s going on, fast enough. I don’t think Alexander and Nixon have the brains or ability to control themselves. Nixon especially is a penalty machine.

I'd say Love is 6-7th best QB in league...maybe worse..pretty darn mediocre for the money paid...hell old man Stafford plays much smarter than Love...Love seems to have lost the ability to go through his progressions this season for some reason...

Why?
Because Cheesehead TV in order to maintain access to 1265 Lombardi Avenue, interviews, players, the locker room, etc. must kneel and bow to Gutekunst.
I don't blame Cheesehead TV, they are just trying to continue to make money.
That said, we TRUE packer fans can distinguish propaganda/"public relations" from reality and can freely express our thoughts, but must remain aware of the presence of the Gutekunst planted Cheesehead blog monitoring police who will appear whenever there is a post critical of Gutekunst's behavior/performance as GM, especially when it comes to Gutekunst's contrarian maverick illogical ego and insecurity driven choice of the quarterback who led all of college football in interceptions in 2019-20 and is now leading all of the NFL in interceptions despite playing 2 fewer games than most other NFL starting QBs.
Jordan Love is a good kid and put into a situation - "franchise QB" - that was well above his mental and physical abilities, so I feel sorry for him and root for him.
Gutekunst on the other hand entered the football management world through the nepotism of his father and this was recognized by veteran Packer players in Gutekunst's insecurities that manifested themselves in his adversarial and antagonistic attitude toward them.
Gute cannot be trusted and the players all know it.

Yes, they sure hurt themselves. Some thoughts.
First the Lions. Credit them where credit us due. They played mustake free football except for Branch. Their play calling was excellent. Goff did not have to make difficult throws. And defensive pressure was timely. The Pack should learn from them.
Ok, Packers. Sideline throws with wet football leads to drops and poor accuracy. Lafleur, learn. You could tell Tom was going to a procedural penalty. He was jumping early all game. So was Walker. Then the penalties, especially on special teams. Something has to happen. Quay Walker has lost his moxie. We really need Evan Williams back. And I think Hafley needs to be more aggressive with blitzing earlier.

Here's my takeaways....
1) As an old football coach told me over 50 years ago, most football games are not won, they are lost, and they're lost by penalties, turnovers, and missed assignments. I think we saw Exhibits A,B, and C on that yesterday.
2) We've lost two games at home to division rival. Any hope of winning the division now means we have to win in Minnesota, and in Detroit, and probably in Chicago, too. The wild card scenario is still very much alive, but we're not going to beat anybody who's any good when we go out there and have 10 penalties, a half-dozen drops, and an interception that was so boneheaded that not even Favre would have thrown it.
3) The Lions offense is pretty good, and they only scored 17 on us. Yes, they did play some prevent offense in the 2nd half, but they weren't moving the ball or scoring points.
4) We had over 400 yards of offense on these guys. Love didn't get sacked. Our RBs averaged over 6 yards/carry. That's called getting people blocked.
5) I look at a few plays that really tilted the game. Love's pick 6,obviously. Wicks drop in the endzone, Watson's WTH? with that long one. He really looked like a freshman facing the jugs machines for the first time, and he really misjudged where it was coming down. I think if a couple of those plays work out differently for us it's a much closer game.
As usual, people are denouncing all the players who "aren't good enough"....Nixon, Walker, McDuffie,Stokes, etc. etc. I think we're plenty good enough, we just didn't play very well. It's over. We're 6-3 at the bye,and I think most people would have been fine with that before the season started.
We've got the Bears, 49ers, and Dolphins after the break, and then we've got Detroit again. Any hope of catching the Lions for the division would have to involve us winning our next three and then beating Detroit in Detroit. IF we're good enough to do that, everybody deserves a pat on the back.
This bit about Love turning it over so much....and stupidly, sometimes....is concerning to me. As is the fact that Alexander never seems to be ready to play when we need him. By my unofficial count, over the last 4 seasons (including this one), he's missed half the games. If he can't stay on the field, I'm in favor of trading him for whatever we can get and saving some cap money.
My mid-term grade on the Packers? I'd have to give them a B-. Yes, they're 6-3. Yes, they've shown some impressive flashes. But there are just too many errors to ignore.

Excellent analysis - if the objective is win in the Playoffs this team has a lot of work to do. Talent is there I believe but coaching is very suspect at this point against teams with winning records. Seem to be in desperation mode mid way through the 2nd quarter repeatedly and simply cannot score TDs in the Red Zone, again penalty driven in a lot of cases. Running game started out lethal and was shredding the Lions - then we get away from it. Why all the hero balls with a less than 100% QB ? How many times does this have to happen before it gets corrected - this is the NFL not Junior High, a lot of these penalties are unforced pre snap as well, c'mon guys !

They made the Championship game last year. By definition, unless they make it there again, they have peaked. I'll give the Lions credit for executing and not making a bunch of big mistakes like we did, but their offense only scored 17 and their defense gave up over 400 yards.

MLF is very animated on the sideline and has a scared look on his face most of the time as opposed to a poker face most other head coaches display, anyone else feel this way? also he had no plays in his book to get 6 yards when needed or get a half a yard on 4th down?

Well every 3rd or 4th down I had my hands covering my face and peeking through my fingers—just like watching a horror movie.

So during the season and especially at the end of the year...you hear...this defensive player has/had X number of sacks. During the season and end of the year...you hear...this player has/had so many touchdowns. STATS ARE NOT ALWAYS THE END ALL BE ALL BUT USUALLY, STATS ARE VERY TELLING.
So why don't we hear specific stats on players who cause penalties. If Rashan Gary ends up with ie 9 sacks at the end of the year...and that is deemed significant...I'd like to know how many penalties were caused by individual players on the Packers...and make "that" significant.

For me, the perfect synopsis of this game was late in the game, we were in Detroit territory. Gain 9 yards on first down. Then try 2 passes, both incomplete. 4th and 1 we try to run the ball and get stopped. That left me shaking my head in disgust.

Goff and several other Lion players stated (before this game) that Campbell was by far the best leader and coach they have ever played for...thats pretty good praise and it show in that team...would any Packer players say the same?? Got my doubts...as an OC MLF would be great, as a leader of men, not so much..
