High Draft Pick

Kudos to Brandon over at the Acme Packing Company for getting me fired up about something on a day I feel like doing nothing. Simple enough question: Do you downgrade a draft pick because he smoked pot?

For god sakes no.

Around this time, every single season, this list of suspected marijuana users gets around to the scouting staff. Almost instantaneously their stock drops and they receive the label druggie. Give me a break.

Cites Brandon:

"According to one veteran club personnel man, 10 or 11 players who carry first-round draft grades on their board this year have been red-flagged for marijuana use in college, an estimate echoed by two clubs' head coaches."

Trust me, that's just the 10 or 11 guys that openly admitted it, I'll guarantee that there at least 10 or 11 more that have quietly kept their mouths shut. Get real America, there are tons of people smoking pot and you already know that. I don't know why this issue is brought in the media every year like it's some kind of taboo. As far as I still know anyway, people are getting baked in larger and larger numbers everyday. And to be quite frank, I'm happy they are doing so.

There is no need to throw in any discussion on legalization and medical use. That's just fodder for the real bottom line. Alcohol.

What I would like to see is a list of the first round draft picks that went out four times a week to local sports bars and got tanked off their ass. Then, I'd also like to see a list of those who then got in fights, threw up everywhere, and passed out while watching TV with a half eaten microwave burrito. I want a list of the guys who are going to hit the strip clubs and then come home and hit their wives because their frickin' too plowed to think straight. That's the kind of list I want. I want the list of the guys most likely to get drunk and mow over people, or even do crazy stunts on motorcycles at 2:30 in the morning.

I've known plenty of pot smokers in my time, and I'd rather have them on my team than the asshole sucking down 24 cans of Old Milwaukee on a Tuesday night.

It's time to get over the marijuana issue. I would be much  more concerned with decision making and moral conviction before I worried about a little pot. It has absolutely nothing to do with character. In fact, outside of abstinence, it's probably a better sign of levelheadedness than anything else.

You'll always have your Travis Henry's, but you'll always have your Leonard Little's too. That's just stupidity, nothing more and nothing less.

Give me the dumbass list first, the stoner list is just silly.

i think the more important topic here is whether the burrito was half eaten before or after it was microwaved...

Premier writing right here.

The difference between marijuana users and liquor user is the size of the industry behind both "drugs". Simple as that.

Liquor industry (and tobacco industry, for that matter) just got lucky to be much bigger in the early 1900's. Remember, there were a time that everything was banned.

But SOMEHOW, marijuana got labelled "drug", and liquor and tobacco received the "product" label.
-------------------
Of course, like it or not, fair or not, it is an illegal drug, and using it is a sign of warning.

Much lighter than DUI's and such, but a professional athlete that lives by his body shouldn't do drugs.

But I agree with you that it shouldn't determine if a player is picked or not. Zinedine Zidane smoked one pack of cigarettes per day, even during games. The whole French team did. They still beat Brazil 3-0 in the World Cup finals...

I agree. I think there is only one valid reason to downgrade a player for recreational drug use. That reason being the NFL drug testing policy. Nothing in the NFL conduct policy is 'tested' for other than drugs. Everything else, the NFL waits if the player has a run in with the law. Because marijuana stays in the system so long, it doesn't take much to have a positive test. So in conclusion I would be more concerned about a potential draft pick being sidelined by the ass backwards policy and punishments, then the players performance diminishing.

I'm glad they do, because that's why Raji fell to us!
In the interest of full disclosure, I am a former pot smoker. I will tell you that as the second most competitive person I have ever come across, pot never diminished my drive to succeed or even my aggressiveness. However, I could certainly see that happening for some people, and I do think repeated use is a red-flag, especially given the poor judgment of putting a promising career at risk for pot.
At the same time, there are much bigger red flags that carry that same distinction. What about Ben Roethlisberger's continued problems, from the absolute macho stupidity of not wearing a helmet on his motorcycle to putting himself in situations where he can be unprotected from accusations (if not committing some of the acts he's accused of). And I'd be much more concerned about drinking party-goers than smoking ones—all the risks in clubs and the potential of drinking and driving.

I want to know who is going to be at the strip clubs "making it rain" so I can be there to snag some of that cash as it hits the ground.

Maybe the tests are harder to get around now, but David Tyree came out and said he smoked pot while in the NFL and the tests (Again, at the time) were easier to get around than in college. I smoke pot because my job doesn't drug test , but when you have potentially a multi-million dollar career on the line, I think it shows at least a little of lack of judgment. While I agree that alcohol is a more dangerous and life-altering addiction , the NFL does't ban players for testing positive for alcohol. If a player drinks but doesn't go to the extremes you mentioned, it seems like a better thought process. It's dumb that pot is thought of as a worse drug than alcohol.

Around these parts they have a tough time deciding which buds to smoke. So they throw them against the wall and the ones that don't stick get puffed first. Damn. why didn't I live out here in High School?

You judge personal character and they're entire background. College aged kids drink a lot of beer and smoke a lot of weed. But, if the player's background is showing more than a mere possession charge (or positive drug test) than you should probably take notice. But that's incidents with any contolling substance. Glad we passed on Talib in 2008 to trade back.

Although I don't agree with pot's criminalization, I think the angsty "I am for pot, because Alcohol is bad" discourse is flawed at best. Even if the benefits and costs are somewhat imbalanced between alcohol and pot, overconsumption can be a problem for both. This is predominantly a cultural problem and not so much one is better than the other. People have every right to be pot advocates (again bc I don't think it should be criminalized), but that doesn't mean you should pretend like its a fail-safe drug. No you're not going to overdose like with heroin or meth, but TCH levels in marajuana have skyrocketed since the 70s so it's a lot more potent than some would like to admit.

I agree. I'ts like I said, it's not about the dangers of marijuana. It's about alcohol and tobacco being as dangerous as, and receiving different treatment.

You either ban all "light" substances harmful to your health, or you allow them all.

Here in Brazil is a huge deal, because more people die in territory battles than in Iraq per day. If the sales would become exclusive to the government, or privately allowed by a public tender, it would almost instantaneously diminish drastically the criminality...

If they will continue to use drugs they shouldn't be drafted because it violates the leagues rules and the law. If they used it in the past and wont use it again it should be a non-issue unless they have a substance obuse addiction which is a sign of deeper problems. As an owner I would be worried about possible future use which would mean him being suspended from the league and a wasted draft pick.
