Training Camp Wrap-Up and Preseason Game 3 Preview

The Packers had their final public practice on Monday, August 19th. We wrap up training camp and give some position battles to watch heading into Preseason Week 3 against the Oakland Raiders.

The Packers wrapped up their final public training camp practice of the 2019 season this past Monday. Later this week they’ll head to Winnipeg, Canada to play the Oakland Raiders. Fans wondering if star quarterback Aaron Rodgers will play on Thursday should be optimistic that he was in pads for the last public practice of the season.

Before we get into Thursday’s matchup, let’s talk about some of the players that stood out in this year’s training camp as a whole.

The first name on this list has to be Darrius Shepherd, and he’s a name that continuously impresses both during practice and in live preseason action.

I was lucky enough to be in the stands on Monday to witness the last practice in-person, and Shepherd was a name that made plays both on special teams and on offense, even taking reps with the first-team offense on occasion. When you’re an undrafted rookie lining up with Aaron Rodgers, you know you’re in serious consideration to make the 53-man roster.

Trevor Davis was also back at practice, and he had a few nice catches of his own. It’s hard for me to see both Davis and Shepherd making the roster, given their similar skill sets, but it’s fully possible that they’ve both played well enough during training camp to secure their own spots for different reasons.

Shepherd historically has lined up in the slot during his preseason action. While that was seen as veteran receiver Geronimo Allison’s role going into training camp, Shepherd has made a name for himself as a shifty, Randall Cobb-type receiver with the prototypical slot receiver built.

Davis also has looked good in his reps on offense. During Monday’s practice, he skied a ball in double coverage from Tim Boyle for a huge completion downfield. Plays like that will get him noticed and help him develop a reputation as a wide receiver, not just a kickoff specialist.

For me, it was pretty clear Monday that Boyle is out-performing DeShone Kizer during team reps. Boyle made nice completions to Davis, J’Mon Moore, and Robert Tonyan to consistently move the chains. The same can’t be said of Kizer, who missed a few open receivers and had trouble moving the ball downfield. I’ll be curious to see if Boyle surplants Kizer on the depth chart going into these final two preseason games. In order to truly evaluate both quarterbacks, both should be given equal opportunity to line up with the first and second-team offense.

Something else of note, the offense is an entirely different beast with Aaron Rodgers is on the field, but that should be somewhat expected, right? Rodgers and his number one receiver Davante Adams were perfectly in sync during team drills. Whether or not they take game reps on Thursday in Winnipeg remains to be seen, but it’s clear they’re adjusting well to the new offense.

Getting back to Winnipeg, here are some position battles to keep an eye on as we get ready for the final two preseason games:

I’ve mentioned Shepherd, Davis, and Moore already in this article, but the wide receiver battle is going to be intense. Add Allen Lazard to the mix of players to watch. The wide receiver battle might be the deepest in recent years. Whether the Packers will keep as few as five or even as many as eight (though unlikely) remains to be seen, but there are going to be some tough decisions made on cutdown day at 1265 Lombardi Ave. The odd man out might find himself on a different 53-man roster to start the season. I’m not sure any of the aforementioned receivers would be make it to the practice squad without being scooped up by another team.

The offensive line has looked like musical chairs during training camp and the preseason, and for good reason. Players like Cole Madison, Justin McCray, Lucas Patrick, and second-round draft pick Elgton Jenkins are being tried at a number of different positions along the offensive line to see where they offer the best depth. Certain players like Gerhard de Beer, Yosh Nijman, and Alex Light are pretty solidified in their roles along the line, but players like Madison, McCray, and Patrick may offer the team some depth in that they’re capable of playing a variety of spots along the line in a pinch. Which linemen will fill those four or five backup spots remains to be seen, but all of the players listed have their own chances for different reasons. (Jenkins is the only true roster lock on that list, and he may be on the starting line Week 1 for all we know right now.)

Once again, focus on the inside linebackers heading into Preseason Week 3. The Packers already know what they have in veteran Blake Martinez. That said, he’s also entering a contract year and could be asking for more than what Green Bay is willing to offer. If that’s the case, players like Curtis Bolton and Ty Summers have big opportunities ahead of them to build off of already-successful preseason performances, given the injury to second-year player Oren Burks.

While it’s yet-to-be-determined whether the starters will see action in Winnipeg on Thursday, it’s likely that the final game of the preseason will be saved for the roster hopefuls and the roster hopefuls only. Thursday night’s game might be our one and only shot of seeing Aaron Rodgers this preseason. While it’s not a necessity, it would be nice to see one or two series of Head Coach Matt LaFleur’s offense being run by QB1.

While it would be nice to see Rodgers and the #1 offense running Matt LaFleur's scheme on Thursday, it isn't going to happen. They aren't going to tip off any of the upcoming opponents as to what to expect when the games really count.

Everything is vanilla in the pre-season anymore. That's why the games only matter to players fighting for a roster spot.

I am really sick of the vanilla crap.

this team needs real reps with real plays with the real players competing against real nfl players BEFORE the regular season starts.

hiding what? every team runs the same plays, just in a different order.

hiding what? after week one every team will have MLFs offense on tape. It comes down to play sequence, formation disguise and player execution.

Dont be MM and try to out-cute yourself.

the nfl idiots made the schedule extremely stupidly with the 2 biggest division games at game 1 and 2 when teams aren't playing worth a crap because of all the pre-season vanilla crap. Way to degrade the season you nfl idiots!

The GBP will start out 0-2 if MLB doesn't get the 1's some work together. That includes the prima dona AR too.

Remember when Brett Favre just hated all the preseason stuff, showed up late to camp mulling retirement while letting the Rodgers kid and third stringers take all the snaps because it just didn't matter to him until the real games started. Now that Rodgers is longer in the tooth, he just doesn't see the appeal in playing any pretend games either. I don't blame them.

Let's assume that Rodgers and the #1 offense play about 20 snaps. Half of them are passing plays. Are 10 passing plays really going to make a difference once the regular season starts? For veterans like Rodgers, Adams, Bulaga, Linsley, etc. I don't think so.

If Rodgers was early in his career yes it would matter. Now it's just a pro forma. More like a myth actually. Thanks, Since '61

S-61,
While it might not help Rodgers, or Rodgers-DAdams, or Rodgers-Graham, I would think it would help a lot for MVS, Allison, Sheph, Davis and Kumrow.
Also, why put Rodgers in just to hand off on 10 run plays?

Put Rodgers in for 20 plays, and pass every damn one of em. Let Raiders know its they're all going to be pass plays, and work the hell out of that pass play. That would be some valuable reps for everyone, including Oline, and RB pass pro. Now 20 pass plays, means 3-4 for MVS, Alli, Sheph, Davis and K-row. Keep Adams on the bench.
Now, that is vanilla offense, but pretty damn good practice with vanilla.

I couldn't agree more, Since. This whole thing about Aaron getting his reps... how about saving those for when it counts? Because, losing him to a freak injury in preseason is a terrible possibility and a completely undue risk.

Rodgers gets more from going against our own D in practice, running the real plays that will matter, not some lame stuff as to not show our hands.

Think, Packer fans. Think.

Actually, from what I've heard, the grass is worse than Soldier Field, as if any could be worse. I'm hoping we play few to no starters against OAK in Canada, and I also hope we come out of this as injury free as possible.

Two weeks to go to the opener and injuries will happen around the NFL.

Keeping your powder dry for the WR rich Packers all the way down to final cut downs in the pass happy NFL could pay lucrative dividends...including acquiring ILB talent.

Pack is going to have to cut some good WRs...or trade them to a hungry team not wanting to play the waiver wire.

I agree that we're going to have to let go of at least one very good receiver, and hopefully we can get something for whomever that might be. I laugh to think about this past NFL Draft when the talking heads were cussing out Gutey for not getting AR any weapons. Maybe he knew something they didn't?

There's meaningful game film on both ESB and MVS. They could conceivably leverage a late-round pick (or conditional late round pick) if they moved one of them.

My predicted 'final' 53.
QB Rodgers, Boyle
WR Adams, MVS, Allison, Kumerow, Davis, ESB, Shepherd
TE Graham, Tonyan, Lewis, Sternberger
RB Jones, J.Williams, Ford
FB Vitale
OL Bakhtiari, Taylor, Linsley, Turner, Bulaga, Jenkins, Light, McCray, Patrick
=26
DL Clark, Lowry, Adams, Keke, Lancaster
OLB Z.Smith, P.Smith, Gary, Fackrell, Ramsey
ILB Martinez, Bolton, Crawford, Summers
CB Alexander, King, Brown, Williams, Jackson, Hollman
S Amos, Savage, Greene, Campbell
=24
ST Crosby, Scott, Bradley
=3
Total 53

Burks must be on the 53 to go on IR, so someone like Ramsey needs to go on the PS for a few days until Burks gets on the IR. Campbell probably starts on the pup.

RB Dexter Williams may well beat out Ford, but he is making some mistakes and coaches HATE RBs who make mistakes. It is also perfectly possible that Ford loses out to a roster cut from another team.

Good list.

I think Kizer still is the #2 unless Boyle lights it up in the last two games. And so far, neither has. And remember, Kizer is in his 4th new offense in 4 years and is still very young. I think this plays into ML and Hackett's views of potential. But Boyle has talent. He too is very inconsistent to date.

I also think keeping only 3 Tackles at the most important position on the OL in the pass happy NFL and 6 Guards will not happen. Sure, Turner can slide, but I am certain the Pack keeps 4 T's...the 4th being Pankey, DeBeer or Nijman who is very intriguing.

And I am certain D. Williams makes the 53 over Ford. But Ford may too, given the emphasis on the running game, at the expense of Lewis/TE. Vitale can block in line if needed and Tonyan has upped his run block game.

I know I am in the minority, but the offense will need more juice at RB/FB and TE than at WR. Therefore, I think 5 WRs will make the roster because you can use 2 of the projected TEs as slot receivers and you can put RBs and FBs out wide also. WRs cannot provide the same versatility.

If GB goes with a 26/24 split on O/D, I would advocate for the 26 being defense instead of offense as you have Turophile. Since defense is a reaction job, the players need more rest than offensive players do and injuries seem to strike defensive players more often than offensive players.

It will be curious to see if Burks goes on IR to start the season.

Your 53 looks good. Only 2 QBs. Don't care if Kizer or Boyle. Your WR 7 okay but Lazard may bounce either ESB or Davis. Rookie RB Williams needs to lay off weed, catch the damn ball.
I see only 3 TE. Wish Sternberger would stub toe and get RS.
Madison could be odd man out, but Gute may see differently.
Add either Fadol Brown or Looney for 6 DL. Other goes on PS.
I like Ramsey too but expect him on PS and OLB Gilbert on 53.
Summers likely a PS guy until he can learn to wrap and tackle.
The CB number and selection are most likely choices.
Top 3 safeties are locks. Campbell on PuP until Jones is dealt.
ST three are as expected

Agree about Sternberger. He just doesn't look like he'll play much this season, and will be an inactive, each week. Therefore him going on IR gives you another open slot on the roster. I'm not sure how much teams can 'fool the NFL' on this though.

Based on the most optimal combination of performance and upside - the receivers should be:
1. Adams
2. Kumerow
3. M.V.S.
4. Davis
5. Shepherd
6. Lazard
So Allison, E.S.B., and Moore - cut/traded/practice roster.
I like Allison but like Kumerow he is also a possession receiver - so redundant. Also Lazard has more upside than Allison and more capability than E.S.B. Davis brings speed to the receiving group (if healthy) but based on his pre-season performances he merits selection to the 53.

Given STs, I think they keep 7 WRs again. Shepherd, Davis, ESB, Lazard and Kumerow are very good on STs and those are important snaps on both returns and coverage....especially coverage with Scott looking good booming punts.

Here's my armchair prediction, as things stand now:

Adams WR 1
MVS WR 2 with Kumerow his backup and also in 4 WR packages
Allison slot with Shepherd as backup and starter/backup ST PR/KR
ESB as 5th WR with slot talent and outstanding downfield blocking/STs

That's 6 and could be it...but given STs, I think the Pack could keep 7 with 3 or 4 getting many snaps on coverage and return units.

So....
Davis backup 7th or Lazard?

Davis has more speed and is now showing fine receiving talent (AKA Driver in year 3)...but man, he's brittle. Lazard is 4.55-4.6 but fairly quick for a very big guy and good route runner. Was very dependable and healthy in college.

I say keep Davis and see if he can stay healthy...and Lazard to PS. If Davis gets dinged again early, IR and waive with injury settlement and bring up Lazard.

Moore...PS and I think he makes it easy.

Allison received a $750K bonus from Gute just a few months ago. Why did Gutekunst do that to a guy he might have to cut? Is he stupid? Generous with money? Or maybe he knew that having a dependable vet around can be useful. He's only 25. Hell, he might be getting better.....he had a great start to last season.

So.....totally agree. Allison isn't going anywhere. But Adams, Allison, MSV and Kumerow are going to get about 90% of the WR targets.

On the gameday roster: Adams, Allison, MSV, Kumerow, Davis (kicks). Shepherd on the 53, inactive. Try to get Lazard on the practice squad.

I don't really think the 2nd ILB job is that important. Mostly because about half the time it's on the field it will essentially be a big dime with either Greene or Campbell playing the position for better coverage.

If it were a 3-4 to protect against the run, I would like something a little more sturdy. Personally, I would want our 7 best athletic run defenders out there. So the Smith's, Gary, Martinez, Clark, Adams, Lowry. A good combination of beef and explosiveness. Essentially, I think it can be a part time role that is morphed based off need. Multiple guys can fill the void.

Considering Josh Jones has had an "illness" for most of training camp, it seems like all but a certainty that he will be gone.

Boyle and Lazard should definitely be on the Packers final roster. Looking forward to see how they perform against the Raiders in Canada.

I can see what players have stood out this far. I am excited to see it all put together. The big concern is the bad luck at injuries over the last few seasons. With the new offense, it is important to have a balanced run/pass game. The running back room is not the largest, and the Packers run game will not be taken serious without Aaron Jones.

This offense has more 12 personnel. They carry DA, Allison, Kumerow, EQ, MVS and Davis. I am a huge Lazard fan, but neither he or Shepherd make the roster. At least one of them will clear waivers and the Packers will recruit that guy to the PS. It is more likely the Packers carry 5 receivers than 7. I think Lazard is claimed and Shepard is not.

Maybe try Gary at receiver. A position switch might unlock that great athleticism that no one has seen yet.

I’d prefer to keep Shepherd over Davis mainly because of Davis’ injury history. IMO, we have too many players who are constantly unavailable.
