The Sky is the Limit for Damarious Randall

The 2015 first-round selection has an upside that is magnified after a strong rookie campaign.

Defense was essentially prioritized in the opening rounds of the 2015 NFL Draft. The Green Bay Packers took a defensive player in three of the first four rounds - the lone exception being wide receiver Ty Montgomery, whose rookie year was far from ideal. With the 30th and 62nd overall picks, the Packers took two corners, Damarious Randall and Quinten Rollins respectively.

With the method behind those two picks likely being attributed to the loss of Tramon Williams and Davon House via offseason happenings, both players have done more than enough to solidify their potential.

Gradually being moved into an expanded role by mid-season and starting his final nine games, Randall finished tied for the team-lead in interceptions. Randall also finished third in total tackles and defensed 14 passes in the regular season - the sole leader in the Packers' secondary with that stat.

The standout Arizona State Sun Devil will have even more of an amplified role going into 2016. With Casey Hayward settling down in San Diego and Rollins recently announcing he'll be showing off his versatility by covering in the slot this season, this pits Randall on the outside.

Covering the outside receiver, however, doesn't seem like it should be much of a problem for the second-year corner. Without Shields and Rollins in a road trip to Carolina, Randall helped uplift Green Bay's secondary and limit Ted Ginn to just one reception. His lockdown performance against Dez Bryant a month later was another milestone, holding one of the most lethal receivers in the league to a lone catch for nine yards. He also timed the game-winning pass breakup against the Chargers, giving his team the win that culminated their six-game win streak.

The expectations for  November's Defensive Rookie of the Month are high heading into his sophomore year, and rightfully so. Picking off Peyton Manning and Cam Newton in back-to-back weeks typically causes your stock to rise.

But what's more for the rising star? He'll also be honored by the Packers Hall of Fame in July with a 'Rookie of the Year' award alongside defensive end Mike Daniels who will be receiving the 'Most Valuable Player' award.

To think, just three months ago it seemed as if Randall would be the next Packer to be dealt a suspension to begin his season after he was caught in a bad situation with former teammate and Houston Texans wide receiver Jaelen Strong. That would've left him, defensive tackle Mike Pennel and fellow cornerback Demetri Goodson as the suspended trio to begin 2016.

Fortunately, that scenario was avoided.

Instead, Randall will move forward into his next season of play with an iffy secondary, strengthened linebacking corps and the 'bad guy' in Daniels anchoring the defensive line. The only direction Randall can go is up - and he's going to have to. Shields, Randall and Rollins round out the top trio of the cornerbacks unit, followed by LaDarius Gunter, Goodson and occasionally Micah Hyde splitting time between there and safety. Not as much depth as you'd like, but the potential longevity paired with talent between Randall and Rollins is the aspect that shines the most in the secondary.

I really like Randall's potential. What impressed me the most with him was his ability to get his hands on the ball.

I also really like Rollins. I think both are going to take a major step in year 2.

Gunter is a guy to watch. He could be our DIme CB or the next man in if there is an injury to the top 3.

I like our depth, its just inexperienced depth. And with Joe Whitt as our CB coach, i'm not concerned at all with the depth being young. He will coach them up really well..

I don't know who I'm higher on between the two (Randall or Rollins). It's a good situation to be in.

I was watching the 49ers game again yesterday and Rollins made a tackle on Hyde that I don't remember seeing from one of corners since Charles Woodson.

They both play the ball so well to be such young players. I wonder if we'll see more one-on-one's this season. That would allow the Safeties to help elsewhere (TEs/HBs while Robbing).

I agree, drealyn: not sure whether I like Rollins or Randall better. I am not as sanguine about our depth at CB as RC is. I have not seen enough of Gunter to be easy in my mind. We have often noted that our 3rd and 4th WRs are almost always better than our opponents 3rd and 4th CBs. Whitt having had a year with Gunter, Rollins and Randall does make me easier; OTOH, he has had years with Goodson, so even a great teacher needs a modicum of aptitude in his pupils.

I think the people who are high on Gunter are eager to see more of him because all he does it make plays when given the chance. Very similar to Jayrone Elliot in previous preseason. I'm in that group as well. Having Gunter as the 4th CB eases my mind for the DB group because he's behind 3 very good CBs and a Hyde that can also help in a pinch. There's not much pressure on him.

As far as Goodson - no comment. Lol

Recently, Whitt said that Gunter would work at slot CB, suggesting that he had the quickness for the position. That got me to wondering if Whitt thought Gunter did not have the long speed to play outside, or if he thought Gunter could play both positions at a good level, thus making Gunter more versatile. I have no idea, but I would like to see one of Cheesehead's authors address this issue in an article.

Yea, I watched that video yesterday. That threw me off a bit too. If he can play the slot - great. But I have my doubts.

Yeah, I thought Gunter would be an outside CB only. But maybe they are wanting to use him against TE's and bigger WR's that play in the slot?

I am not sure. I am looking forward to seeing him in his 2nd year though.

I'll be honest: I think Gunter has safety conversion project written all over him...maybe even Morgan Burnett's replacement. The slot makes sense if you're going to ask him to walk up and cover after that kind of change were to be made.

He might play faster than his 40 time indicates (one would hope!), and maybe he's physical enough at the line to disrupt routes and keep outside receivers from running away from him, but if there's an injury and he's starting on the outside and I'm an opposing QB? I'm watching that matchup very carefully and I'm going to test him downfield until he shows that he can keep up with a speedy outside receiver.

I'm with you on the possibility of him moving to safety or at least taking over Hyde's hybrid role next season..

Ahh, I never thought of it that way @Dobber. That does make sense. I just hope it isn't another "project". Although he does have history at Safety. He's not a lock to make the squad. I hope they don't make it anymore difficult for him and let him focus on mastering one aspect (first) of his game.

He'll probably have to put on a few more pounds in this new role.

When I watch Gunter play, he reminds me of poor mans Richard Sherman or if you want to go back to the 70's a young Mel Blount. He plays with such physicality and those long arms of his help him tremendously. What can we all say but yet another home run strike by the great one Teflon Ted. I love it when he hits on undrafted players.

I'm a bit partial to Rollins since I fell in love with him at the Senior Bowl. And was very excited to see the Packers take him.

But Randall was amazing in his rookie year. I think both players have bright futures. They made rookie mistakes, so hopefully they will learn from them.

But I couldn't agree more that both play the ball so well. They find it so easily and attack it.
I love the upside of our CB's.

I love prospects who are said to have instincts, and that is the word on Rollins. Randall has better measurables, but my bet is still on Rollins to be the better CB.

Honestly, I think career wise Rollins might have the better career. But either way, I'm happy to have both on our team. Should be a great tandem for years to come.

Depth is exactly it means - depth. Having confidence in your backups and having a stockpile of talent at the position. While the Packers are talented at cornerback, that talent doesn't exactly run deep. If Randall or Rollins go down, Gunter fills the void? An unproven CB who people seem to be so high on after a few flashy plays with his given opportunities? I'm an optimist when it comes to the team I love, but I'm also a realist. Let's be real, Goodson isn't much of an honorable mention so I'm leaving him out. I'll explain more in the comment below.

Today from Packerstalk.com...

I tend to agree that there's a lot that needs to be proven by this group (I still think they should've drafted a CB), but there's really good potential, too.

I think Makinton Dorleant was a udfa steal and will develop into a solid backup. Kid has talent and a good work ethic

Ed, I think by "iffy" he could be referring to the Rollins injury. Just a guess. http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/16011442/packers-cb-quinten-rollins-re...

Hyde really isn't a CB and has been on a downward spiral for a while now covering TEs and RBs. He should move to safety. Gunter is unproven. We have 3 CBs in whom I have some real confidence. That is not bad, actually. We have been a bit spoiled by the depth at CB lately.

Correct. Between a veteran in Shields, two second-year players in Randall and Rollins and an unproven Gunter. Throw in Hyde who splits time as a safety, his natural spot. Yeah. I would call that 'iffy' and in no world do I see that as having depth. They're full of talent, but like I said, the depth doesn't run deep. Another minor injury like a finger dislocation that Rollins recently suffered at the beginning of OTAs and the secondary won't have much of a backbone. A serious injury and that secondary will be in shambles.

Remember Week 9 in CAR? No Shields, no Rollins, and the defense surrendered nearly 300 yards through the air and 3 touchdowns. A near-300 yard performance seems like child's play compared to 3 weeks earlier vs SD. I won't get into specifics of that poor defensive showing or lack thereof.

I'm hoping a guy like Josh Hawkins or Randall Jette can make the roster. Not only will that add in more 'depth', but it'll also give another UDFA a chance to learn behind another UDFA in Shields who happens to be the leader of the Packers' cornerbacks unit.

Have to agree. You can't hide good corners in this league. You have to pay them premium wages. Depth is always going to come from developing players. Proven depth goes elsewhere for more $ (House, Hayward, etc).

And he didn't say "iffy corners", he said iffy secondary, which includes one of the best safety tandems in the league as well. If our secondary is 'iffy', I don't even want to know what he thinks of our linebackers and receivers.

I think the Packers secondary graded out in the top ten last season against the pass which is pretty good for a young group.

I always remember the comment by Teflon Ted when asked to describe Damarious Randall. I think he said something like if there was a pickup game at school that he was probably always the first guy picked. That's so Ted. Simple and basic and to the point. Yet another home run pick by Teflon Ted and yet he still doesn't get respect he deserves for being one of the all time great GM's.

Yes they do 4th and 1. Now Ted is due to strike gold with the defensive line. He already has struck it with Daniels and the ascending Mike Pennel and I really have a good feeling about Kevin "I'm not Bruce" Clark. I also am high on Fackrell and Spriggs.
