The Lass Word: Purdy or Love, Who Would You Rather Have?

Young talents look to shine in Divisional round.

The Green Bay Packers find themselves an even bigger underdog against the San Francisco 49errs than they were against the Dallas Cowboys. The betting line was Dallas minus 7.5 points when they kicked it off at Jerry World last Sunday afternoon. Despite the Packers absolutely dominating the ‘Boys in that game, the oddsmakers were apparently not impressed, because the line this week opened up at a whopping 9.5 points! Even sports talk show host Colin Cowherd, who has been critical of the Packers in the past, called that line “disrespectful”.

It is revealing that, as of this writing, the line has not been betted down and remains at 9.5, meaning at least half of those who gamble on pro football games seem pretty convinced the Niners will win this game easily by double digit figures.

Looking at the match-up, it’s easy to see why. The Niners are the number one seed and have been steamrolling recent opponents. They are loaded with elite talent at the skill positions, including running back Christian McCaffery, receivers Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk, and tight end George Kittle. They excel at stopping the run and play a physical brand of football that can intimidate and overwhelm opponents who don’t match their intensity level. They are coached by Kyle Shanahan, a brilliant offensive mind who knows how to effectively scheme his talent to create difficult match-ups. They have advanced to the NFC championship game in both of the past two seasons, so they are playoff tested and will be playing at home on two weeks rest, while Green Bay is on a shortened week.

It is difficult to find an edge, any kind of edge, Green Bay might have in this game. But there may be one. An important one. The Packers just may have an edge at quarterback, though that could certainly be up for debate. San Francisco’s signal caller is Brock Purdy, a second year veteran who was the last player selected in the 2022 draft. Forced into action last season because of injuries, the unheralded Purdy turned out to be a revelation. He quickly beat out first round pick Trey Lance, who was traded away to Dallas.

Purdy immediately comprehended Shanahan’s offensive concepts and executes them beautifully. Playing in sixteen of seventeen games this year, he ranked fifth in the league in passing yardage, third in touchdown throws, and led the league in QB rating. There was a point during the season that he was very much part of the MVP conversation.

Green Bay quarterback Jordan Love, meanwhile, didn’t take off until midseason, but since then has been every bit as good as Purdy if not better. Playing a good bit of the year with his top receivers injured and missing games, Love still finished seventh in passing yards and added 32 touchdown passes, one more than Purdy. Love is bigger, faster, and has a stronger arm than Purdy. You can make the argument that Love is also more athletic. He has run for 247 yards and four touchdowns in the regular season, compared to 144 and two for Purdy.

The San Francisco signal caller is a straight dropback passer who generally doesn’t ad lib that well when forced out of the pocket or dealing with blitzes. He thrives on getting rid of the ball quickly and staying on script. Love, by contrast, has shown the ability to beat blitzes with quick recognition and vision. He has also demonstrated he can escape the pocket and make dazzling throws on the run, sometimes adjusting his arm angle to sidearm deliveries. His throws tend to be more spectacular than Purdy, but perhaps less consistently accurate.

So which guy would you rather have at the controls going into a big playoff game? Clearly the Niners’ roster is superior, with stars up and down the line-up on both sides of the ball. Brock Purdy surely carries less of a burden into the game, needing mostly to just get the ball to McCaffery and his big play receivers. His margin for error will be much wider. Love will have to execute perfectly, avoid turnovers, and make some spectacular plays. In other words, exactly what he’s been doing for the last four weeks.

Ignoring all other factors, just looking at Purdy and Love in a vacuum, who would you rather have? I’d take Green Bay’s guy. He is our edge. Probably our only edge. But he happens to play the most important position in the game. That gives the Packers a chance.

I haven't seen anything from Purdy that compares to what Jordan Love has been doing lately. Gimme Love. He has a higher ceiling.

Odds? Spreads? That's gambling, not football. Hype is a factor there because lots of gamblers are huffing up media bs. I remember a game where the Packers were 10pt underdogs and went to California and kicked 9er ass.

betting lines are not disrespect. they are action. they exist to balance the action, not to reflect anything other than sentiment. you are correct though, betting isn't football. it's gambling.

but everyone knows that betting on football is a guarantee of riches. remember, betting isn't just on the winner or loser, it's also about in-game action, overs and unders, and don't forget the coin flip, easy money on that one.

Love, because he looks like a guy who can bring an unpredictable advantage and maybe carry a team to victory against a supposedly superior opponent. He's already done it against Dallas.

Purdy fits the San Francisco system perfectly, but what would he be without that abundance of experienced talent around him? Probably still a good quarterback, but not a Pro Bowler. Unlike Love, there's no X-factor you have to worry about.

The pressure again is on the defense for this game. Release the hounds on Purdy, and jeez, make sure you cover the middle of the field and make the 49ers beat you another way. Instead of needing Love to play a perfect game, maybe we can get a little help from our defense like we did last time. It's not out of the question.

I still think the pressure is on the offense and let me tell you why. Its not a coincidence that the defense has played well in nearly every game the offense has given them an early lead. Lions, Chiefs, Vikings, Bears, Cowboys, all the same story. This defense is built to play with a lead. Give them an early lead and I believe they will play well. If the offense struggles, the defense will almost certainly struggle. Complementary football means more to the Packers team than maybe any other team I can remember recently.

Unlike last week where all the 'Experts" Picked the Boys I just saw a few including Pete Prisco pick the Our Packers to win a shoot out close game.

I believe that the 9'rs will come out flat after 3 weeks of no game play and losing to the Ravens.

It seems they are suspect with great passing QB's like Cousins, Lamar, Burrows and now Love.

I trust our O-Line and Defense, Gulp did I just say that.....

Fast start and win in the trenches!

I'll take Love over Purdy, who has already had a significant injury in his short career. In a perfect world, you get Love on Purdy's seventh round salary, but hey, you gotta pay that man.

If Purdy weren't playing for Shanahan, you'd never have heard of him. Purdy reminds me a bit of Teddy Bridgewater, except Purdy can actually throw the ball further than 10 yards downfield.

I live in the Bay Area. The local media and Niner fans are slobberingly infatuated with Purdy. There is no denying he is an excellent QB and without a doubt one of the best feel good stories in sports.

However, as someone who has seen every single snap by Love this season in addition to about 80% of Purdy's, since local TV always features the Niners, my eyes tell me that Love is the better QB. It's been a revelation to me because I doubted him early in the season, but he is scary good, routinely making off platform throws into tight windows. His stats from midseason on validate what my eyes see too.

When I tell Niner fans that I respect their QB but Love is better, they glare at me like I've said something offensive, even sacrilegious!

Realistically, the Niners deserve to be favored, as they have the better overall team, loaded with Pro Bowl players. Green Bay is not there... yet. But the future looks great. That said, the future might arrive a little bit early, due to the fact that Love is a superior talent than Purdy!

Love: first round.
Purdy: seventh round.

There were/are reasons for that, and every NFL GM knows it. (Okay, maybe not the ones who’ve been let go, but pretty easy to believe that if ANY GM saw Purdy as elite, he would not have lasted until the 7th.)

A good question. Over the season to date, Purdy, just, but he has more experience. His strengths fit the system he plays in and he’s surrounded by talented and experienced veteran skill players and has had much more time with an elite RB on the field this year as well as prior experience with those players.

Despite all of that, Love has had a better second half with less experience around him. Both have excellent temperaments, but Love is physically significantly more gifted in my view and has started to show an equal ability to improvise. Despite everything, Love has thrown more TDs while not being in a veteran run-to-pass offense.

Purdy’s efficiency ratings reflect the fact that he typically doesn’t have to throw to carry the team. Love has not been so blessed till Jones’ resurgence. Purdy also has played on a team that’s built to be ahead and mostly has been. We have all seen how that helps recently.

Going forward, I’d take Love without hesitation in terms of career. Purdy may be a more proven option, but he doesn’t have the upside and it’s hard to see him ever having a better supporting cast, whereas I think Love’s is yet to fully blossom.

Let’s be honest, at this point most teams would fall over backwards for either. But I’m happy with Love in Green and Gold and will be whatever happens on Saturday.

I have not seen Purdy play that much. Maybe 2 or 3 games? Don't remember. One of them was against Ravens, and I think he made a lot of mistakes.

Right now, Love is playing great. Love now has a lot of weapons on offense now that Jones is back and ready. It seems like Love makes more out of what he has.

I do think Kittle + McCaffery + "That one WR" will be too much for packers defense, so the offense better be prepared to score almost every possession. Packers should play with the mentality that they left punter in GB.

It sure seems that Jordan Love has really become accustomed to the pace of the NFL game. The differences between the KC game that he started and the beginning of this season were obvious but now the differences between the first half of this season and the second half of the season are even bigger. He is really picking up reads and making good changes at the line, pre-snap. He is also really improving his accuracy and timing. Some of those impressive throws have been made when he's unloading the ball at the last possible fraction of a second. The game has really slowed down for him and he's becoming more and more comfortable and confident.
-
I think I'd agree with those who say Purdy is pretty much near/at his ceiling and playing well with an experienced cast. Jordan Love is still on his way to his ceiling if he keeps improving at this pace with such a young supporting cast.

If you compare our WR's, TE's, RB and QB, we are not that far off from San Fran. We have multiple good WR's they have two that are pretty well known and good. They have Kittle and we have Musgrave and Kraft...pretty close comparison if you ask me. They have McCaffrey and we have Jones. A little edge to them but close. QB, I like our guy better. So overall, they may have a slight edge but not much.

I like their kicker over our kicker. Not sure on the punters.

The trenches scare me a bit. They have a formidable defensive front and they do get the edge over ours. They have an excellent LB in Warner and ours are pretty good too. I think we have the edge with our CB's and they have the edge with the Safety position.

SF has an excellent OL but ours of late has really improved.

Overall, I give them the edge but not by a ton. I think it comes down to how will we play in the trenches!

I am looking forward to this game. Remember, we are playing with house money. This is all gravy at this point!

There is a lot to like about both quarterbacks. To begin with, both are likeable and it nice to able to genuinely like your quarterback; both are as smart as a whip, and that is intellectually and football IQ; both are excellent in the pocket and have a very good pocket awareness; both have decent foot speed to escape a rush and make yards with their feet. While Purdy may be designated a "Pro Bowler" at the present time, I believe Love would be voted a Pro Bowler as well.

Well, what about the difference. I think both players will excel the NFL in future years, I do believe that the one thing that separates the two players in my mind is the superior arm strength of Jordan Love. On a lesser scale, I think that Jordan's extra height 6'4" vs 6'1" will give him just a bit better visibility down the field.

Thus, my vote goes to Jordan Love.

If they play like last week, no penalties, mix up the runs/ passes to keep 49er front off balance and use their tight ends,…they should have a good chance. Harass Purdy early and often.. and don’t miss tackles.
If it’s close, the 49ers may feel the pressure late.
Why not us?

Since 2000, Purdy possesses the fourth-highest
single-season passer rating through "15 weeks "
of any quarterback.
the top 3 - Manning, Brady, and Rodgers.

But doesn’t that put Purdy in the
arrogant, self centered and egotistical?

Obviously there is No right answer to a wrong Question.
It takes a team effort.

To answer the question—Love over Purdy(boy), and it’s not even close.
I also believe the media is giving waaay too much credit to the 9’rs. As one poster said in a previous post, the media treats Shanahan like Lombardi or Landry.
The 9’rs in no shape or form want Purdy attempting to win from behind; Shanahan’s record is not good when he’s behind.
Moreover, their D has weaknesses: they don’t stop the run as well as advertised; and their Dbacks are a concern; our receivers can whip their dbacks.
I say lookout if we have a lead in the 3rd quarter. And if our defense gives the O one or two additional possessions—we win.
Go Packers!!!

I can't blame us all for being so excited and optimistic. But its very early to be talking pro-bowl level and the next legendary QB. I would take Purdy due to him being more tested and proven. A lot of QBs can have a hot streak. I like what we see in Love, but until he's under heavy pressure the whole game, we just don't know how he'll do. I imagine he'll come back down to earth this weekend as defensive coordinators start to study him for tendencies and scheme accordingly. Love has benefited from the 'surprise factor', so he'll have to keep upping his game. I'm wait-and-see. Purdy for the time being.

Its not too early. Very few qb's ever reach the level that Love is playing at right now. Im talking a tiny percentage. Thats how well hes been playing. And the slim few who do reach that level dont just fall off. It takes a certain level of talent combined with mental mastery of the position to reach the level hes at right now and the only way a guy just loses that is injury. The crazy thing is we havent even seen his ceiling yet. Also worth noting, in comparison to Purdy, Purdy only has like 8 more games of starting experience than Love so its not like hes some grizeled vet either. Hes far more likely to drop off than Love is imo.

Not even close who I would take, and this is not a homer Packers take. You said it yourself in the article, Love is bigger, faster & has bigger arm. Let me check myself we are talking about the QB position and he exceeds in all those traits? No question you start your team with J Love over Mr. Irrelevant any day. Get on board the Love Train, it's an exciting ride. This is no doubt a big hurdle in SF this week but one that can be jumped. If Pack gets it done this week we are Super Bowl bound. Just the fact that is a possibility has made this an extremely fun transitional season moving on from AR. It's just beginning and the arrow is pointing straight up for our Packers.

Saturday weather forecast for Santa Clara is rain showers entire day.

Good news!

Purdy's hands are 9.25 inches, one of the smallest among the active QBs.
Love's hands are 10.5 inches, THE biggest among active QBs (next biggest is supposed to be Russel Wilson at 10.25)

Rain will make it more difficult to grip the ball; having bigger hands helps. Hope that results in no turnovers by Packers and several by Niners!

I would Love over Purdy, especially sine the game has "has slowed down for Love." He has a higher ceiling and he has been playing lights out over the second half of the season. The Niners have the better team at the moment but at QB straight up Love would be my choice.

Another way to look at it would be to put Love on the 49ers and Purdy with the Packers and what would the results be.

Love has become a difference maker for the Packers while Purdy just needs to get the ball to the 49ers difference makes, McCaffrey, Kittle, Aiyuk and Samuels.

Thanks, Since '61

Love without a doubt. This is not to say that Purdy is not a good QB. He certainly is, but look at his supporting cast!

Forgive me for repeating what I said in another thread:
SF has easily the best roster in the NFL. It's not just McCaffrey but also Deebo, Kittle, and a number of other less flashy but just as strong players. When you're paying your QB *only* $870,000 a year you've got about $30 million to spread around the roster. A million bucks on top of a good offer wins in a bidding war for a good free agent; they picked up 13 veteran free agents last summer (https://www.49ers.com/news/49ers-2023-roster-breakdown-free-agents-train...).

Meanwhile Love is working with a lot rookies and second year guys, not to mention a defense that doesn't really bring much to the party. Purdy is important to the 49ers' success, but GB would be dead in the water without Love.

I think we focus too hard on players reputations and past performances. In reality this game starts at 0-0 and all that great past gores right out the window. Just ask the Cowboys and their 8 Pro Bowlers. Can the Packers beat the 4ers? Is Jordan better than Brock? It all depends on how they play Saturday. I think the key players for the Packers are Christian Watson and Jaire Alexander. You can really argue that the Packers are at least comparable at all other positions, but the 4ers don't have the equivelency of these two. Watson changes the game on offense and can truly undermine any defensive strategy they use even without catching a pass! Alexander can be a game changer on defense and make the play that just might make the difference. Their CB's are just possibly a weakness for them. If the Packers win these two guys will be either directly or indirectly responsible.

No matter how the game turns out today.....Love. Statistics aside, Love seems to have the quiet confidence that leadership requires.
Could the niners blow them out if clicking on all cylinders? Yes. They basically have an all star team.
If the Pack can create turnovers or hurries with pressure, run the ball, make the niners play from behind they have a chance.
The only reason we don't have any pro bowlers on our roster is that our receivers our unknown names. That will change soon. Talent is there.
Looking through my packer glasses...... GB in a shoot out.
