Surviving Sunday: Packers news, notes and links for the football deprived

Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy is set to appear on an episode of "Celebrity Family Feud" on Sunday evening. Earlier this spring, QB Aaron Rodgers won "Celebrity Jeopary."

What other Packers would make for good celebrity appearances on game shows? Here are a few that come to mind:

The entire offensive line on "The Price is Right." I could see Bakhtiari, Sitton, Linsley, Lang and Bulaga whooping it up in the audience and helping each other out if one of them happens to make it to the showcase showdown.

WR Randall Cobb on "Let's Make a Deal." Cobb's teammate Jordy Nelson signed his first contract extension early and vastly outperformed the deal. Cobb waited, had a career season, and cashed in big time this offseason. I'd say Cobb would know what he's doing on "Let's Make a Deal."

QB Scott Tolzein on "Who Wants to be a Millionaire." He seems like the type who would be into trivia, and be good at it.

LB Julius Peppers on "Wheel of Fortune." The "Wheel of Fortune" is a game for people who are reserved and sneaky smart. Peppers fits the bill. Plus I'd to see how hard he can spin the wheel

QB Aaron Rodgers on "Love Connection." If the tabloids are accurate, Rodgers might need the services of Chuck Woolery.

S Morgan Burnett on "Win Ben Stein's Money." You have to be smart to run Dom Capers' complicated defensive coverage scheme, right? Burnett would hold his own on this show.

Packers news, notes and links

  • The Packers are working on a Brett Favre "special" prior to his July 18 Packers hall of fame induction and number retirement. What exactly is a "special"? A video? An interview? A slide show? All of the above? I'm guessing it's some type of video package. Either way, I can't wait ot see it.
  • Thanks to the re-signing of WR Randall Cobb and T Bryan Bulaga, ESPN gave the Packers a top grade for the offseason. I'd also argue that getting rid of A.J. Hawk and Brad Jones improved the Packers' grade. Of course, parting ways with Tramon Williams and Davon House is a risk, but you can't keep everybody. Williams was aging and House was injury-prone. I don't fault the Packers for not overpaying to keep them.
  • Acme Packing Co. is counting down the top plays of the Packers 2014 season. My personal favorite was No. 5.
  • ESPN asks: Who is better: Randall Cobb or Jordy Nelson? My vote goes to Nelson, but of course, it's close. Cobb has made a lot of big catches over they years. In addition to big catches, Nelson has also made a lot of tough catches. When the Packers' offense is sputtering, Nelson is usually the one who makes a how-the-hell-did-he-do-that catch on the sideline to get things going. Cobb has made his share of tough catches as well, but not as many as Nelson.

Non-Packers links and other nonsense

  • I recently completed a fantasy professional wrestling draft that included all American wrestlers who were active in 1983. I am runnig the AWA (Verne Gagne's old promotion out of Minneapolis). My top 5 picks: 1. Hulk Hogan (each owner could protect one wrestler, I chose Hulk), 2. The Road Warriors, 3. Ken Patera, 4. One Man Gang, 5. Jimmy Garvin. What do you think? Am I set up for a long run of Packers-like succss for the next 20 years?
  • A Supreme Court ruling earlier this week upheld Obamacare. It's tempting to chime in with my own opinion on Obamacare, but that would cause the comments section to explode and I would be (rightfully) fired from CheeseheadTV.
  • If opining on Obamacare didn't break the comments section, opinong on the Supreme Court's gay marriage ruling surely would. I'm all for mixing sports and policy issues every now and then, but certain issues...nah.
  • Any "True Detective" fans out there? What did you think of the season two premire? I thought the acting rivaled a Lifetime movie of the week it was so horrible and over-dramatic. But by the end of the episoide, the overall atmosphere and general weirdness had me sucked in. I'll give it another couple of episodes.

Can't wait for TC to start, it's got to be tough for the guys to try and come up with new things that haven't already been written about 5 different kinds of ways already. Interesting twist today Adam!
Since the merger of ALLGBP.com and CheeseheadTV, I have to give all the guys 2 thumbs up! Seems to be working out really well.

Last years "True Detective" series will be tough to top though I remember after episode one last year thinking this show is really strange! Hopefully this years series comes close to stacking up.

Re: Nelson or Cobb?

Mentioning 'when the offense was sputtering', I'd say it was actually Randall Cobb that sparked the offense more often than not.

Yes, Jordy is always poised to make a key play at anytime during a game, but last season there were at least 3 games where the offense was simply unable to get rolling until McCarthy started moving Cobb all over formations, specifically motioning him into and out of the back field. In those rare rough patches for this offense, once they start using Randall out of the backfield, they tend to feed him down after down for gain after gain for a series, and it seems to get the defense loosened up and the offense back on track.

Jordy is always going to make plays throughout a game. But Cobb? That is the Packers player who can single-handedly jumpstart the entire offense in those rare games where the offense just doesn't seem to be able to get going.

Yeah, to add on to what you said, Cobb seemed to have sparked the offense on the road when Jordy couldn't, and Jordy kept the offense rolling at home. Both play off of each other, and I for one feel extremely lucky we even have one of them.

I don't disagree. However, that's another reason why I go Nelson. You don't really have to line him up all over to get him going.

Yeah, i agree with what you have said.
I think that is another reason why they drafted Montgomery. They have compared him to a bigger version of Cobb. If they have another version of Cobb on offense then they will now hopefully have 2 guys that can jumpstart the offense.

Adam,

Agree with you on the Gay Marriage Ruling.

I hoped they would have just left it to the individual states, but realize it was becoming a problem with the varied views and staunch positions.

One other thing on NFL Sunday Ticket. I got an auto renewal notice for six payments of $41.99 unless you call and cancel. Recommend cancelling and negotiating a better price with an agent at a later date.

Jordy has made some incredible catches, ones you never forget. Can't wait to see Cobb this year though.

What, no Rowdy Roddy Piper or Original Ultimate Warrior?

Piper was taken already. Warrior wasn't around in '83.

Piper taken ahead of the Hulkster, really!? Where did Lawler go? How about Flair? Like your Warriors pick. Did the draft go deep enough to include the Moon Dogs, one of Jimmy Hart's best tems in the Memphis area? '83 was right about the time of McMahon's emergence with the WWF. USA Network if I recall correctly.

Nice Sunday article Adam...

I am picking # 8 - the longest 1 yard TD... I love to see how complete Vikings D forgot about Rodgers... But, I admit that that TD is not so important like others...

Hey Western Kentucky U and Louisville J.D. you need to read your history and discover that Lee surrendered in 1865. (At least that's what they teach at UW.) You guys lost, get over it. It's time to cut up the ol' stars and bars and move into the 21st century, dude.
