Packers Reportedly Adding Former NFL QB to Offensive Coaching Staff

Former NFL QB Sean Mannion is joining the Packers coaching staff.

While the Green Bay Packers added to their defensive coaching staff last week, naming Jeff Hafley as the team’s defensive coordinator, they also added to their offensive coaching staff. Sean Mannion, who played quarterback for nine years in the NFL for three different teams, including the Minnesota Vikings, and was signed to the Seattle Seahawks’ practice squad late in the 2023 season, is joining the Packers to work with the quarterbacks and the passing game, according to ESPN.com’s Brady Henderson

Henderson did not report Mannion’s exact title. Matt LaFleur's offensive staff already has a passing game coordinator, Jason Vrable, and a quarterbacks coach, Tom Clements. Many wondered on X, formerly known as Twitter, whether the addition of Mannion meant that Clements, who turns 71 in June, would not be back with the team in 2024. Rest assured, Clements will return for another season, as reported by Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

It is possible that Mannion takes the senior analyst position claimed by Tim Lester, who recently departed Green Bay to take the offensive coordinator job with the Iowa Hawkeyes. Regardless of his exact title, Love and second-year quarterback Sean Clifford should benefit from the teachings and presence of Mannion, who has been lauded by many due to “his intelligence and understanding of the game.”

Coaching also runs in the Mannion family. His father, John, began coaching high school football in 1988 and stepped away from his head coaching position at Mountainside High School (OR) last January due to health concerns. He started the football program at Mountainside in 2018 and went 29-20. Prior to Mountainside, he went 57-20 at Silverton High School (OR) in seven seasons and previously coached in California.

In other Green Bay coaching news, Silverstein reported that every single member of the team’s defensive coaching staff from the 2023 season “have been given permission to apply for other jobs after the team hired Jeff Hafley as its new defensive coordinator Wednesday.” And we know one staffer in particular who will not return, according to The Athletic's Matt Schneidman: Jerry Montgomery, the team's run game coordinator and defensive line coach.

Hematoma from a bicycle accident was the rumor, later said to be a birthmark.

I knew of Mannion as a journeyman QB but that was about it. Thanks for the additional info, Rex. I didn't realize that he was very intelligent and a student of the game. The GM for the Seahawks (Schneider) said he could easily be a head coach in the NFL one day. I will take him as another coach for the Pack and the QB's may learn a few things from this former quarterback. Two Defensive coaches are back (Downard and Rebrovich) though Montgomery was let go. I'm sure Hafley has his DL coach that he wants and good to get some fresh blood.

Apparently someone got turned down in a purple dress for his prom wannabe date.

Maturity = respect your opponents while hoping to defeat them.

Barry Sanders...Bud Grant...Sweetness. Respect the hell out of them. Love my team to beat them. Never thought of them as a "taint". Grow the hell up.

Hey, being steeped in a culture of losing has a taint. It's a fair comment, the Vikings are a team drenched in failure, no trophies, no prospects of ever having them. Fortunately for Mannion, he has other experience to draw upon, and the stop in Minneapolis was simply a stop on a longer journey. ,

You just can't help yourself, can you Princess? That inner totalitarian is just obsessed with the belief that this fan board needs to be moderated...by you.

I think the Vikings are a crappy franchise, and anybody associated with them is tainted, IMO. I'm entitled to that. IF you have a different opinion, express it. You could do this without taking personal shots at me, but of course, we both realize that isn't something you're going to do.

"I think the Vikings are a crappy franchise" - there's no think in that, it's a demonstrable fact.

" You could do this without taking personal shots at me"

You're right, but I just really, really don't like you. And, at one time, I thought I was going to have an opportunity to tell you why in person, but of course you backed out. So you keep feeling all tough and manly calling another man Princess while sitting in anonymity at your computer.

In the meantime, I'll try to restrain my negative comments based on my dislike for you.
