Prioritizing Packers UFAs

Which Packers should stay and which should go in 2017?

With the NFL Combine approaching and free agency slated to kick off in just under four weeks, we've officially entered the last giant prognostication period of the league year. While it's impossible to know for sure what players from around the league will be available once free agency begins, there is one number the Packers are surely focused on - their 11 unrestricted free agents. Like most years, Green Bay will have some tough calls to make when assessing how they want to proceed.

Here is my priority list, from most to least important:

1. TE Jared Cook - Throughout the "run the table" portion of the 2016 season, no offensive player made a more noticeable difference for the Packers. After missing six of Green Bay's first nine games, Cook returned against Washington in week 11 and was targeted 11 times, catching five passes for 105 yards and his lone regular season touchdown. From there, it was clear that opposing defenses were adjusting to make Cook a focal point of their gameplans, and the whole of the Packers offense became the beneficiary. His chemistry with Aaron Rodgers became more and more apparent as the season wore on, and culminated in Dallas with perhaps the most outstanding play of the NFL playoffs. Cook has expressed interest in returning to Green Bay and the Packers have reportedly mirrored that interest. If they want the offense to be as dangerous as possible next season, they'd do well to get a deal done.

2. DB Micah Hyde - On the flip side, perhaps no one did more on defense down the stretch than Micah Hyde. A mainstay in a secondary ravaged by injury in 2016, he once again proved his worth as a jack of all trades, even playing perimeter corner and reeling in an interception against Detroit in week 17. Add to that his ability to factor in the punt return game, and Hyde can provide the Packers with depth at multiple positions. His market presumably will not be overly hard, and I'd imagine there will be mutual interest re-signing.

3. OLB Nick Perry - The numbers pretty much speak for themselves here. Perry had 11 sacks in 14 regular season games. He played well despite wearing a club on his arm as well as the absence of Clay Matthews for the last quarter of the year. Perry has earned a new deal and I wouldn't expect him to give the Packers any sort of hometown discount, so they may have to come out of their financial comfort zone to make it happen.

4. G T.J. Lang - Of the top priority guys on my list, this one feels the most like a coin flip. It shouldn't, however, given how en vogue it is to talk about the importance of continuity along the offensive line. While guard isn't as flashy a title as, say, left tackle, Lang has been as important to Green Bay's sustained success as anyone. If the Packers do intend to re-sign him, his recent injury history could help them do that by softening the market and bringing his price down. On the other hand, those injuries could serve to make the folks at 1265 Lombardi a lot more hesitant. Lang's reliability (he's played in 93% of possible games in his career) speaks to what kind of player he is, and I believe he still has plenty to offer the team.

5. DE Datone Jones - It's easy to become frustrated with a player who has such incredible physical tools but has yet to maximize them on a consistent basis. Jones could probably be considered an outside linebacker, and his ability to move in the open field would justify that designation. He has shown, in flashes, an ability to make plays, but often neutralizes his successes with errors. The Packers could try to find a replacement via the draft, but sometimes it's better to stick with the devil you know.

6. LS Brett Goode - I know, I know - a long snapper? Really? It may seem like these guys grow on trees, but Goode is excellent at what he does and won't require a bank-breaking deal.

7. OL Don Barclay - Another player whose value lies in providing depth. Barclay can play multiple spots along the offensive line, and while he's not exactly the favorite son of Packer fans, has performed good enough to keep around. Green Bay could certainly move on, however, and probably not miss his services all that badly.

8. RB Eddie Lacy - This is probably the most speculated-upon decision the Packers face this offseason. Ty Montgomery's emergence at running back in 2016 has probably lowered the stakes of this decision, as one has to assume Montgomery will go into 2017 atop the depth chart. The release of James Starks, however, made things a little more interesting again. While it would surprise no one if they pursue a running back in the draft, cutting Lacy would make it essential to do so. However, as NFL teams continue to prove, someone is ALWAYS willing to overpay. I would expect he ends up coming back on a smaller deal, but it wouldn't rock my world if his run in Green Bay is over.

9. OL JC Tretter - Tretter has played his best football at center, a position at which the Packers should be pretty solidy set with Corey Linsley. Don Barclay will be cheaper to keep around and can be a backup at center. Nice to know you, JC.

10. RB Christine Michael - I know I'm not the only one who wound up a little disappointed with how Michael's time in Green Bay played out. Granted, he probably never had a full grasp on the playbook, but he straight up just went the wrong direction on more than one occasion. A re-signing here would be extremely unnecessary and, frankly, shocking.

11. OLB Julius Peppers - It's weird to see Peppers at the bottom of any list. While his play over the past three seasons has been more than adequate, he just simply looks to be running out of gas at age 37. That makes him the least of the Packers' worries as thet attempt to reconstruct a defense that proved too much of a liability too often in 2016.

For me, the top four on this list are level one priorities for the Packers going forward, though it may be financially difficult to keep them all. What does your list look like?

Don Barclay at #7? Are you kidding me?

No. No. No. No.

Find a serviceable lineman in the draft who can be developed. Don't waste the reps/energy on Barclay. He's been done since the knee injury and is only a liability when he is in the game.

Just because you're coach puts you in at multiple spots, doesn't mean you can play them.

Should have been let go last year, when he almost was.

Cmon.

I agree. I used to love Barclay, but he hasn't been the same since he tore his ACL.
I think they should bring back Cook, Hyde, Lang, Perry, Lacy, and Goode.

That being said, agree regarding Hyde at #2. Should come cheap. Not too many guys in the league can play every position in the defensive backfield.

I'll take datone Jones over Perry. Just more value for the Buck. I don't think he's a bust at all. Like to have Cook, but not at over paying him. It's time to draft a TE or two. Sign Tretter. TT is rebuilding people. We need stars not what ifs.

The Top 4 are priorities, although Jared Cook is the only one I'd overpay. I think after Datone, you get into "it would be great to have these guys back at the right price." If Lacy and Michael will compete on 1 year deals, great.

And I wouldn't bring Don Barclay back for free.

I'm starting to become more worried about what this FA period is going to look like for the Packers.

1. Perry is going to ask for a lot.
2. Jones would be crazy to come back here.
3. If Hyde gets offered more than 2 mil per the Packers shouldn't match.
4. Tretter and Lang can't stay healthy.
5. TT is not gonna spend on UFAs just cause we think he should.
6. Peppers is almost as old as I am.

There's a very good chance the roster regresses over last Spring.

We all know Ted won't spend any money and doesn't care what Aaron Rodgers or the fans think or how upset they might be. I don't trust him to improve this defense at all, expect another wasted season with a very poor and inconsistant defense.

I think Chris's list is a good overview of our FA situation. I think that JC Tretter is under appreciated because of his ability to fill in all over the line but I understand the durability thing.

I am still surprised by the consensus lack of interest in Eddie Lacy. If we were loaded at RB I could understand. With a former WR as our primary option, I am surprised that people are not remotely concerned about Lacy walking.

We picked up another young and cheap LS so Brett Goode probably won't see a contract.

Julius Peppers is my forgotten man. A one or two year lower cost deal could help this defense if either Perry or Jones don't come back. Like Hyde, he makes plays when we need them. Hard to discount that out of a defense that doesn't have many difference makers.

Lacys weight is a serious issue and he actually gained back most of the weight he lost in the offseason despite starting out well before his injury but it was still clear his burst and speed suffered. Can he be trusted?

And can he stay on the field?

Answer: No, unless he's dropped about 30 pounds. The chances of that happening are slim to none.

Far as I can tell, his only hobby is video games and eating. Wonder how much he weighs right now?

I agree with trying to resign lacy. Unless of course they're going to have Monty in for first and second down and then put lacy in on third and one so we can watch him get stuffed because there were ten men in the box.

Good to see how many times Chris Wanless mentions money, when he talks about upcoming FAs.

As fans we usually have our likes and dislikes, and often pick who to keep and drop accordingly.

However, as long as a guy is good enough to play a role with the Pack, it's really mostly about the price point matched against the talent. If a deal can be struck that is favourable in the price to skill index, the player is re-signed.

Other things like ascending/descending players, character concerns, injury, do factor in, but mostly it is current quality, matched to cost.

No Barclay, No Michael (this draft is too deep) Tretter will get overpayed as a starting Center and won't come back as a backup..bye. Coin flip on Lacy, No Peppers, let the market set itself for Perry and Jones then go from there. Yes on the rest.

Let's make the assumption that TT will either A. Not address free agency or B. Not address free agency apropriately, outside of our own. Yes, he's had a little success like getting Woodson and Peppers, but in all reality those moves were nothing more than band aids. One of those moves have brought home zero titles, and 1 happened to stumble upon one behind the arm of Aaron Rodgers. That being said:

Jared Cook is an absolute must, plain and simple.

Hyde would be great to bring back for the right price of a couple million, keeping in mind that he has a good amount of leverage might prove that more difficult.

Tj Lang is getting over his second leg surgery and his third lower body surgery overall, to a lineman that's everything. I think TT may have learned something from his Sam Shields move, hopefully. Time to move on

Perry you bring back, not much leverage their either, less of a choice. Same with Datone, no he hasn't panned out as the first rounder we all expected but he is versatile playing on two feet or with his hand in the dirt. Thats a big deal in this defense.

Lacy you can get away with signing to another 1 year deal or let him walk. I'd rather keep him, but the future is in our draft i.e Jamaal Williams out of BYU or James Conner from Pitt. Both big backs (6-2 225+) with speed and ability to run between the tackles. Excellent compliment to Ty and knowing MM he will have packages with both a bruiser and Ty on the field.

Barclay is replaceable, Goode has already been replaced, Peppers is looking to retire a panther, TT will draft okay with a couple hits and a few whiffs, hold onto 35-40 million in cap space and take a a big fat bonus check for doing so, and pray that he leaves the nfl with a bang. And if he doesn't, he will at least have gotten paid.

OK, so you do not count Pickett, or Jared Cook ("Jared Cook is an absolute must, plain and simple. ...") as FA signings from TT? You think signing of Jordy, Randall, Bulaga are not FA signings? Or David Bakhtiari? They are, what? Draft signings? They also cost money as any other FA. Or you think that those previous Packers players salaries are not counting against salary cap? You think you can resign your players and sign FA with no influence on the cap?
Oh, my God...

I mean, I wasn't trying to address every free agent. But since you mention it, Ted Thompson was unwilling to pay Pickett when it came down to it because if his misplaced trust with Justin Herell and Jerel Worthy, Cook was a good pick up as was clearly stated, jordy was a restricted free agent when the packers sealed him up, randall cobb was over paid we can now see that, bulaga and bahktiari were never free agents they recieved midseason extensions.

All of this said, year after year Ted hoards millions and millions, 31 million this past year, in useless cap space. I like his conservative approach for the most part and draft and develop first mentality, don't get me wrong. But damn that kind of money does you no good when you don't use any of it. I'm not saying go out and sign aj Bouye, I'm saying go out and sign a Morris Claiborne, Stephon Gilmore (again, examples) someone who you can trust that will buy into the system. Everyone wonders how the Patriots are so successful, Bill Belichick is the best in the world at scouting talent for his system

I'm not denying his production at all. But looking from a business standpoint, he was not in it for the long haul. Detrimental to that team in 2010 in winning the super bowl, yes absolutely. But he left after 1 more year with the packers to go back to Oakland, which is fine that's his choice. He was the plug that prevented the ship from sinking. But he was the short term solution, not long term. If he was the long term solution, that defense wouldn't look as horrid is it did. So yeah, looking at the big picture he was a band aid. Ted goes out and gets himself a long term solution, we may be looking at another super bowl win or 2 in the last 6 years. In fact, you could put the blame on that secondary against the seahawks 2 years ago, you could put it on the secondary against the Cardinals last year, and needless to say you can certainly put it on that unit against the Falcons.

No, actually it wasn't Woodson's choice to leave. He was really kicked out of Green Bay. Even after Thompson cut him for cap reasons, Woodson wanted to return for a reduced rate, but was never even offered the pay cut, which pissed me off. Woodson should have retired a Packer. He was more than just a "plug", he was there for 7 years after 8 years in Oakland. 7 years is longer than a lot of quality players careers. 7 years though should have been 10, and he should have been able to finish his career out in Green Bay. I do agree though, we need a long term fix at the #1 CB position right now, and there are a few guys that could potentially fix it for us. Bills Stephon Gilmore, Texans AJ Bouye or Rams Trumaine Johnson. Morris Claiborne is another option, but carries a lot of risk. He had a great year when on the field this year, but again missed almost half the season. We just need to get one of those top 3 CB to replace Sam Shields, and maybe trade one of our 5th round picks for ILB Mychal Kendricks from Philly, and then draft the top pass rusher in the 1st, maybe TJ Watt. That could go a long way towards fixing our defense next season.

For me the Packers UFA priorities are Cook, Lang, Hyde, Tretter, Perry and Goode. With the issues on offense we need to keep the offense as intact as possible except for Barclay. Cook is a legit TE threat for the Packers and he contributed to the offense once he returned from injury. He played well in the playoffs, sign him. Lang is a solid, veteran OL who brings experience and continuity to the OL, sign for the right price. Hyde, good not great DB, but he shows up, makes plays and is effective on punt returns. Sign him for the right price. Tretter can play any position on the OL he is still young with an upside. Sign him for the right price. Perry will be difficult because his price might be too high. If TT can work out a favorable deal he should resign him. Goode, because you never hear his name which is a good thing for a long snapper and his price will probably be reasonable. Chuck Barclay, Peppers time is up, D. Jones has given us nothing in 4 years, Lacy is fat, slow and injured and entering his 5th season as an RB if he plays. All negatives for an RB. C. Michael, draft fresh legs who can learn the offense. Long overdue for TT to get some better players in FA, we'll see. Thanks, Since '61

Price is always a factor in signing any player. However, if you read my post I specifically stated that the Packers UFA priorities are Cook, Lang, Hyde, Perry, Tretter and Goode. Then I also posted that we should not sign Barclay (ineffective), Peppers (too old), Lacy (best seasons are behind him), D. Jones (would be no loss) and C. Michael (easily replaced in the draft). These last 5 players should not be signed regardless of price. We did not make it to the Super Bowl with them we can continue to not make it without them. In the end who knows what TT will do or what the players and their agents will do? I was just trying to list the players who would be a priority to resign if I were deciding based on the article which was written. Maybe you should focus on commenting on the article rather than criticizing everyone's response. Thanks, Since '61

While I think Lang should absolutely be back, I don't think he will. Reasoning being:

1-Age. With the exception of a few, the packers don't tend to give long deals to players over 30. They'd most likely rather let him go a year too early than too late.

2- Salary. He just made his first pro Bowl, was the #1 rated pass blocking guard by PFF, and will more than likely be paid by an O Line-needy team in free agency, (hopefully not the vikes). They'll let him walk now, potentially for a nice compensatory pick, and know they aren't risking dead money by cutting him because-

3. Injuries. He's gotten piss-pounded over the year by the wear-and-tear of a career on the O-line. He's a tough son of a bitch, but all these surgeries make for him being a ticking time bomb before he's too broken to be effective.

Add all theses together, plus the lack of communication about a new contract so far, and I think he's gone; to be replaced by a younger, cheaper, newly re-signed tretter who has proven to be versatile and effective, albeit injury-prone. Add an interior lineman in the draft, plus spriggs with another year as the utility backup, and you have the most cap-friendly, long-term O line plan possible.

Lang is still playing at a high level and he rarely misses a game. i don't think you let him walk when you don't have a suitable replacement on the roster. if you're thinking JC...he seems more injury prone and guard is not his best position. keep Lang...he's a tough sumbich.

I think Ted Thompson could really be setting a bad standard if he doesn't retain TJ Lang, especially after letting Sitton go. It's almost saying, "we don't care how good you are, or how much you put your body on the line and play through injuries, once you're 30 and playing certain positions, you're out." That could eventually sway 25-26 year old guys from re-signing with the Packers, cause they know they have no chance of staying there after that deal, so why not go somewhere else who might still want your services at 30 if you're still playing at a high level. Lang is a Pro Bowler, All Pro caliber player, and rarely misses games. He plays through injuries, and doesn't let his play slip at all. He is the kind of veteran that you reward and keep around. Of course you don't give him 5-6 years, but a fair 3 year deal, that should be a must for a guy like TJ Lang, especially if he's willing to take a discount to stay, and the way he talks, sure sounds like it. TJ Lang is definitely a guy who should have the option of staying in Green Bay.

I will be real curious if any of our defensive players leave and become way better players on another team, similar to Hayward with San Diego. What would that say about our defensive coaching staff. Would that make future defensive players facing free agency to not even consider re-signing with Green Bay? I just think a change should have been made already to breathe new life into what seems to me, a stagnant defensive unit.

Five plus years of little improvement on defense should tell us something. I don't doubt that Perry, Jones and Hyde would do well in other scheme similar to Casey Hayward. So while we fret over paying or not paying a guy, this defense gets ready to improve how?

1. Jared Cook. I worry that he and his agent will try to price him out of GB. Not that he doesn't like being a Packer, but this contract will more than likely be his last.

2. Perry. Had a great season. One great season only. But like most others have said, he finally gets it and has made it to the point of getting paid. TT will really work to get him signed. I think TT will get outbid.

3. Hyde. Won't be expensive. Will be back.

4. Lang. Like to see him back, because of his veteran smarts and his strong play. But he won't be back. If TT hasn't talked to his agent by now, he is as good as gone. I see him in Atlanta or Minnesota.

5. Datone Jones. Only if can sign him for low $$. He hasn't earned a big payday. If some other team wants to throw their money away, then bye bye Datone.

6. Barclay. Bye.

7. Goode. Sign him for minimum and let him compete with the new kid TT signed from Mich. State. Winner takes all.

8. Tretter. Sign him. I think TT will get him signed.

9. Lacy. One year deal. No big guaranteed money. If TT is able to do that, the weight issue may not have him making it through the final cuts in training camp.

10. Michael. Not worth a sniff from TT.

11. Peppers. IF he still wants to play, sign to a one year reasonable cost deal.

Free Agency - Sign Calias Campbell. But won't happen because of what he will demand for money. Any one of the top rated free agent CB's. At least talk to them. This more than likely won't happen either.

Draft - CB, DE, DT, MLB, TE, OL and RB.

i would flip flop Barclay and Tretter on that list. he is a much better player and is just as versatile as Barclay. but that depends on what Tretters people are looking for. i wouldn't overpay for him.

Barclay is versatile only in the sense that he sucks equally at every position he plays.

I really don't get all the Lacy hate. He's always averaged over 4 a carry and last year over 5. I don't care if he's 290, if he gets 5 yards per carry he an be on my team. Yes, he got hurt last year, but the previous 2 probably playing heavier, he went over a 1000yards. The dude has quick feet and it takes 3 people to get him down, sign him up.

It's not "hate" but disappointment. He doesn't care enough about football and the possibility of making $5 million per year to stay in shape.

He's slow and misses many opportunities for big plays because he is a slow fat guy who gets winded running 10 yards.

So sure I agree they should sign him for a low price or one year higher price (prove it deal) but I do not trust him with a long term high garuntee contract.

Keep Cook and Lang, let the rest walk. Tired of potential bring on some speed to this team.

Yeah, I guess we're gonna get better next year letting our only quality OLB walk, huh?? There's absolutely no possible way we can't re-sign Nick Perry if we want any chance of our pass rush and overall defense improving next year. Clay Matthews, Kyler Fackrell, a rookie and whoever else is under contract today damn sure isn't gonna cut it, and outside of Chandler Jones and Melvin Ingram, 2 guys highly unlikely to leave their current team, Nick Perry is easily the next best OLB on the market. We can't afford to lose him after finally staying healthy and breaking out. We're trying to improve on defense, and you wanna let our top pass rusher go???

Make Lacy stay at 220, WTF are you smoking??? There's no way he's gonna get under 235, cause he's just a huge dude. And why do you care what his weight is if he's picking up 5.1 ypc and among the best in he NFL in yards after contact??? Isn't that what matters most, his yard per carry and yards after contact??? Some of you worry way too much about the guys weight, so much so you completely ignore what he does on the field, and that's ridiculous. As for Nick Perry, 2015 was also a contract year. The guy has never been a bad player when on the field, and always graded out pretty decently. His only issue was being able to stay on the field. It's not just a coincidence the 1st off season he's ever had with no injury problems since being in the league becomes his best season in the NFL. The guy is a hell of a football player, can get after the QB, and set the edge and defend the run at a high level too. With the state of our OLB position, there's no way we can let him go. Clay isn't even half as good an OLB anymore, and who the hell else we even have??? We're suppose to let our only quality OLB walk and then expect to improve defensively?? Perry will be back in Green Bay. Cook will be back in Green Bay. Lacy will be back on a low cost 1 year deal, around 2 mil with a chance to make an extra 2 mil or so in incentives. Jones will be back on a very low cost 1 year deal, around 2 mil, and Hyde will return for a fair 3-4 year deal worth around 4 mil per year. Ted Thompson likely won't re-sign Peppers even if he doesn't retire, but the others will be back.

Disagree on Cook. He likes GB and Rodgers. Perry may get lower offers than he thinks, as this is an exceptional draft year for edge rushers. That might lower his price tag just enough. Also, great draft year for corners and RB's.

Would love to see them move Hundley for a late 2nd or early 3rd.
