I'm reposting this comment from the "Trade or No Trade" column because many fans are frustrated by the lack of action by the Packers. In my view the front office already knows they can't do much. Here's my earlier post...
----
Never forget cap considerations. While the Packers do have some cap room they will again have a tight fit next season even with the cap expected to go up. It can be summarized in the idea of 'all in". They went all in and now they are left out.
The Packers are $2.3 million over the cap for the 2023 season. So it's deja vu all over again this off season. So taking on a big veteran contract now makes zero sense from a financial standpoint.
If Rodgers were to retire this off season--according to Over The Cap--with some maneuvering--they would still have a $15 million cap hit next year and $24 million the next. I suspect they will let some of the free agents go and maybe cut other players. Rodgers contract has, in a crude sense, given the Packers financial constipation. The have a blockage that requires a lot of pain to pass.
So if Gute makes a move it means that the player they sign today means more than the ones that will need to be ejected to keep that contract alive and others.
Bizarrely, if Rodgers STAYS and doesn't retire, the cap hit will be even worse as his guaranteed money is through the roof.
I think after the season the Big 4, Murphy, Gute, Ball and Matt LaFleur all need to be held accountable for the decisions made to keep Rodgers. I'm not saying fire everybody, I think that is stupid, but ONE of these folks decided to cave into Rodgers demands and now it could propel the team into a black hole of mediocrity at best for an extended time

Is it too late to build a time machine to go back and draft Higgins or Pittman instead of Jordan Love?

Probably solves a lot of this...

This team could easily have afforded Claypool simply by cutting 2 players - Lowry and Amari. I think the problem is again with the great GB "Forest Gump" - Mark Murphy. Because his "mentor - Ted Thompson would never do it - he wouldn't do it. It would have taken some initiative, cajonnes and taking a chance. Mark Murphy has NONE of these qualities. And he is "tenured" to this team until July 2025. And like a tenured college professor, he will have no performance milestones to achieve. Just go to free lunches, give the appearance that he is doing a job and try to sell everyone on what a good job he has done. Oh joy, oh joy!

Quite a LEGACY good old Mark will leave for GB. Literally no objective chance of making the playoffs this year. Crippling contracts that will hamstring this team for the next 2 years. One Super Bowl with one of the greatest QBs of all time and whose time ends when his time ends. Great job, Mark. NOT!

I gotta give the Packer management water carriers credit for their perseverance.

There is literally nothing the organization can do that merits criticism.

This team was SOLD on this site as having a Super Bowl contending roster all offseason.

The team is now 3-5 and does not look anywhere near a Super Bowl contender.

So does that mean the team should look to acquire a player or two to turn the season around?

Well no the water-carriers say, because there was no one worth trading for or the price, as always when it comes to the Packers, was too steep.

Conversely, does the 3-5 record reveal that the team is not a legitimate Super Bowl contender and thus that it might be prudent to move a player or two to ease the salary cap and accumulate draft picks for another run in the future?

Well no say the water carriers, because there is still a lot of talent on the team and don't ya know the Pack might just turn it on.

Again, I admire the tenacity if not the cognitive dissonance of the Packers ardent media defenders.

And when all else fails, the water carriers can pull out the old line “so you think you know better than people who are paid to manage the Packer roster & budget?”

I am jealous of the Vikings who are setting themselves up for a prolonged playoff run and division championships. I would have loved Hockenson but the first rounders are steeper than the organization is willing to part with and would not solve the mess we are in. What I do not like is that the team did nothing nada zip to address either the problems this year or to mitigate he disaster to come. Nothing to try to win this year although I advocated against buying. Nothing to try to dump salary for next year or two and to gather draft assets that can be traded used or squandered in what is now a lost season. Inertia. Three yards, a cloud of dust, and a muffed punt as the team drifts to the 1970s and 80s.

Allegedly both Packers and Bears offered a 2nd rounder for him but the Steelers felt the Bears pick would have better value.

So at least we have that going for us!

Can the Packers trade for some common sense? MLF over the past 2 weeks has said the defense needs to be more aggressive and play more physical. But when asked about Barry he says he's doing a great job. Huh? The O line is a disaster in P pro, but no changes are made, A WR would be great but this teams needs more than that. Their problem now is they blew their chance to rebuild the team by not not trading 12 when they had the chance. We could be 3-5 with Love at QB and picks and cap space galore. I love 12 as a player but it was time and they passed. Such a shame.

The only people in the world who do not think the Packers need to make an addition or two at the trade deadlines are the Packers coaches and management.

I'm not sure about the coaches, but management cannot be bothered about such things as player trades.

Gutey is already making plans to draft his next 3rd round bust.

Need: WR#1 and WR#2
Trade: CRICKETS
IF AR DID NOT LOVE THE THOUGHT OF 50 MILLION $$......HE WOULD RETIRE TOMORROW. For 50 Mill most QB's who want to win a SB would have been in early to get the pup WR's up to speed ASAP and stay late doing it or have them at his place after the draft to get a head start......But..... that would be if you wanted to win a SB. Here we are folks....Heck with it, play the rooks over Cobb and the rest to do what should have already been done.

I think if you take a quarter of the cap and you lose your primary receiver...you got work to do after the draft.
Not taking Jefferson at #20 and drafting Love instead is..."THE" PRIMARY REASON. There are peripheral reasons including Covid-19 and Billionaires not willing to take a financial hit for a season that in effect hurt the Packers the most and has shortened the SB window and limited the quantity of FA we could sign. This affected all teams but our QB is older than most and hurt us more than most there. Our first ballot HOF QB has elevated Nobody as a WR or it would show.

Some packer fans use the initials MM when talking about Mark Murphy. It should stand for Matthew McConaughey. As in the dude who had a part in dazed and confused. MM is like " I love the trade deadline. All these teams are getting better but we stay the saaaaamme".
Well I guess we should give ol' Brian Gutekunst another slap on the back for trying... He sure tries ALOT.Wasn't in the cards AGAIN. 😕 Not any trade deadline the last few years or any offseason when a bunch of Wr talent changed teams. Oh yeah I guess there's still OBJ UNTIL another team gives him more money than GB offers and Well... they lose again. His failure rate to improve the team during the season is becoming something of its own title town legend.
This post was much longer explaining BGs past and current missteps that led this team to now but I've decided to summarize rather than rant ad nauseum. We all have seen the various wrs moving teams during the offseason and now. From expensive stars all the way down to still youthful talented college guys drafted high who's skills have yet to translate to the NFL and guys who have little left in tank. 6 1st rounders in 4 years from 18'-21'. I know the draft was a long time ago and has produced a few bright spots on D but with GB it must be discussed because we all know this is about the only way that this team acquires any players.5 defense and 1 offensive pick who may possibly never play for GB as a starter.
1 39 year old Qb given a large contract. Alot of it guaranteed . Cap hit grows exponentially each year with the lowest hit being after 1 year. So one would think this is the last last ride. All in. Then Love next year. Reset with a talented young group.
2. Adams traded. I get it. He wanted out and GB couldn't afford him really.
3. Let young talented veteran guys familiar with the offense and Rodgers walk . MVS and EQ. Ok now your wondering who Rodgers will be slinging it to during this all in go for glory season.
4. Goes Defense with 2 1st rounders again. Now I'm getting mad. Yes we got a dude in the 2nd and yes he can be good but these type of selections are usually more raw and take time to develop. Devonte took a good 3 to be a real consistent contributor and at least 5 to become a too notch WR. SOMEONE NEEDS TO EXPLAIN TO BRIAN G. THAT TIME IS SOMETHING THIS TEAM WITH THIS QUARTERBACK HAS VERY VERY LITTLE OF LEFT. We need guys to perform for today.
5. Sits on hands during offseason as players who could be potential assets to the passing game go to other teams. Who will be Rodgers guy.
6. Shruggs shoulders as more talent gets dealt. K. Toney, Claypool( he tried) . R Anderson a week earlier etc. So Lazard is THE guy? He's the #1. I like him but not as a 1 or even a full time 2.
7. 3 and 5 shit show. Give Rodgers the golden blunderbuss and no ammo. Makes zero sense. We paid a fading star a boatload to struggle with sub par talent or inexperienced talent that won't blossom soon enough.
I have been behind BG up until now. It once seemed his plan was to replace rodgers after 2020 or 21. Go to JL.
Plan B. Keep both. Go for a ring.
Plan C. Keep both again. Give Rodgers more money. Go for the ol' ring with less on offense more on defense.
Plan D. Sit on hands as house burns down. Double down on plan so not to look like a fool.

The reason I'm a Packer fan "IS BECAUSE THEY ARE OWNED BY THE PUBLIC"....NOT A BILLIONAIRE!! I'm pretty sure after this years fiasco...and a half hearted attempt at adding a Vet WR...Something just may happen other than getting better draft slots. But we needed a #2 WR when Adams was the go to also...That would have helped.
MVS was a #3.

I wish all we needed was a wideout to propel this team to the playoffs but that's not the case. We're probably overdue for a rebuild and chasing talent in the midst of a salary cap squeeze makes no sense.

KC got a first round draft choice for a three and a six in Kadarius Toney. We couldn’t have afforded that. The guy runs a sub 4 forty and has moves better than Barry sanders. Sure he didn’t work out in New York but it’s New York. If this guy gets on the field in Kansas City, they’re winning the Super Bowl. Claypool would’ve been nice, but Toney would’ve been great in the slot. The lack of effort to improve this team is just disgusting. It’s not like you’re out of the playoff picture. Sure maybe Minnesota may have the division wrapped up but everyone else going for a wild card is jumbled around the .500 mark. Are we trying to get a high draft choice next year so we can pick a defensive player again. I remember the one time Green Bay had the Moxie to go get a receiver in the middle of the season and I think his name is Andre Rison. I guess that didn’t work out well.
