Having raised and trained dogs for the last 25 years, might I be so bold as to suggest an English Cocker Spaniel if you're looking for a smaller family pet. If you're looking for a larger dog, but not a horse, might I suggest a German Shorthair Pointer. I'm sure you'll do your research, but I can attest both of those breeds make great family pets.
