Packers to face 49ers in NFC Divisional playoff game

Kickoff will be Saturday, January 22nd at 8:15pm est.

The Green Bay Packers will face the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Divisional playoff next week at Lambeau Field.

The 49ers beat the Dallas Cowboys 23-17 to earn their trip to Green Bay for the Divisional match up.

Kickoff will be Saturday, January 22nd at 8:15pm est.

The two teams met out in San Francisco in Week 3, with the Packers posting a 30-28 victory on a walk-off 51-yard field goal by kicker Mason Crosby.

The other NFC Divisional playoff will have the winner of Monday night's Cardinals-Rams game (No. 5 vs. No. 4 seeds) traveling to Tampa to face the No. 2-seeded Buccaneers.

The two winners of the NFC Divisional games will meet for the conference championship, with the highest-seeded team hosting, on Sunday, Jan. 30, at 5:30 p.m. CT.

Would have rather seen the Rams or Cards in this case, but all you can do is play the team in front of you.

It's going to be a physical dogfight.

This is great--a chance to exorcise the demons of last decade!

SF may have sustained some key injuries on the defensive side of the ball, especially Bosa.

While SF may be a respectable opponent overall, Jimmy G.. is turnover-prone; and I guarantee you our defensive guys won't be letting anyone back in the game with a multitude of unforced penalties.

Of course we'll need a similar standout performance from our OL like they did earlier in the season.

Let's see if SF can stop Davante this time; and if they do, someone else will step up.

The 49rs have all their weapons Healthy. Controlling Deebo and Kittle still leaves Aiyuk and the FB/RBs in their screen games. Barnes has to be focused this week and the Safeties have to show they can cover the middle. It would be nice to see a First quarter script that works to get some points and control clock at the same time. I like Taylor getting more snaps in the Game Plan. Should be a physical match up.

We also have weapons. No excuse for us not putting up enough points than they looked like scoring today if we use them wisely. They don’t have deep range, shortens our field. Stop the run and force him to pass. Play the Vikings plan. This time punish that line with Dillon early and often.

Absolutely a chance to exact some revenge. Losing 3 in a row to SF is bad enough. Losing at Lambeau again even worse and is not an option. Will be a good game to face any demons head on, more to come with TB.

I believe Pack will win. Vikes
game was the dress rehearsal to battle a strong run game in the bitter cold. Plus we gots LOTS more pieces for this game:
Bakh, Z, Jaire, Whitney, Meyers, Cobby.
Go back and watch the Niners game from week 3 and the Vikes game. Won’t be easy , but we be aight

Might as well not have had Cook either as far as his impact went. I think that’s his point. Yes JG is a starter, but the 49ers are a run first team and JG is made to look good only if that opens spaces to mask his issues. The Vikings approach is a decent analogy.

So hard to predict regular season, and playoffs are tougher. Cowboys with #1 offense did nothing for 3 quarters against a strong defense. LaFleur is 2-2 against Shanahan and 9 ers and Rodgers is 0-3 post season. Captain obvious says stop the 49ers run game, which is easier said than done. I hope that Alexander and Z Smith can contriubute as well as improved Bakh and Myers. Will be a nail biter at cold Lambeau field on Saturday night. GPG

A fitting end for a McCarthy playoff team: a called QB run from near midfield with 14 seconds to go.

If Kellen Moore made that call, all his HC interview offers might have been cancelled before he could get to the locker room.

Agreed--Packers need to make Garoppolo beat them.

That last two minutes were ridiculous. I can't shake the feeling that the review of the spot was based on the answer to the question "What ruling would make for the most drama?" I had to laugh at the Niners having their QB sneak nullified by a penalty. After a time out no less. Then Dallas running up the middle with 14s left and no time outs. LOL

The thing is: that SF penalty that nullified the sneak was legit. SF did their best to barf that one back up for Dallas.

How about Dallas with two legit defensive holding calls on run plays against their DL in the closing minutes?

I've seen MANY calls for his head by Cowboys fans. Will be interesting to see if Jerrah fires him (personally, I don't think he should be fired, but if I were the owner I'd strip him of the ability to call plays).

I don’t think he should be fired. I am baffled by the fact that he still is unable to manage the clock, or ensure someone keeps him in line. More generally, I watched that game and, uniforms aside, it was eerily like watching any late era MM team in so many ways.

That was the thing for me the almost Ground Hog day stuff over and over.I was like he did take a year off? So why is he doing the same thing that people calling for his head here. It's almost like he thought, I'll take a year off, change nothing how I coach (clock management, no in game changes, or my offence philosophy) and everything will be fine. Really was weird, to watch.

Nick, I do not think that was play originally called. It was second split decision made by Prescott because nobody was open. Even with that decision to run , he should count the seconds in his head and he should go down 5 yards earlier, to allow referee to put the ball on the spot before snap. Those 5 yards would have no meaning in the last snap.

Prescott lost 3 seconds before he started to run and forgot that referee has to put the ball on the spot before the snap.

I also believe that there is no difference between who is coming to Green Bay on Saturday. If Packers will play good game on the both sides of the ball, than it will have no meaning.

Usually packs play slow or dormant after a bye week. We have seen what 49er's did to the home team packers should be ready and consider this as a revenge game for the 2019's play off loss. I am expecting exactly from pack's i.e, avenge the 2019's playoff loss.

I will not playing game with the idea of any revenge. Todays teams are not the same one you are talking about. Second, not less important, Packers need to take care of themselves and execute game plan on high level. Only thing they need to think about is how Packers perform, not about revenge. Thinking about revenge move the focus from execution of requested action to emotion. You need to play with clear head, knowing exactly what to do, not what your emotion brings to.

Packers have had a reputation of being more 'finesse' than physical for a long time.

However, under LaFleur they are running more, and more successfully than in the past. While I have seen them wilt in playoff games in the past, I don't expect to see it with this team. These days, I would describe them as being "as physical as they need to be".

If you cast your minds back to the early season opponents, they faced a murderers row of strong defenses, and held up really well. I don't think that changes.

The 49ers have a high quality pass rush, but the Packers have the line to slow that - and a good running game stops them from just pinning their ears back and going all-out for the QB. The Packers safeties and ILBs are pretty good now (Amos, Savage, Campbell, Barnes).

In the back end, the 49ers have a decent (but no more) set of CBs. If Rodgers gets just a little breathing room, Adams and MVS will, in their own specific ways, make things difficult for DBs (and Jones and Dillon can catch as well). Lazard will block well as he always does and maybe add a catch or two, while Cobb is a 'get-out-of-jail option for Rodgers and so is Lewis, who often gets the odd catch and has super-reliable hands.

the biggest difference is Garoppolo vs Rodgers. Jimmy G didn't look that good against Dallas, throwing too many high, low and just plain inaccurate passes. Do that against the Packers and expect guys like Douglas to have an interception. Rodgers on song is very, very hard to stop. Even if not quite there, his 'B' game isn't bad.

I get that some people are nervous about facing the 49ers, maybe they think Shanny will out-scheme LaFleur. Me, I think the Packers are just too good at this time to lose to the49ers. That wouldn't be such a convincing opinion after all the expected quality players lost after this year, but as of right now, they win.

The referee management group have a lot of work to do this week.

Apparently refs crews for finals are a composite from individual top rated positional refs - not the complete crews that work together week in \ week out during the regular season.

I personally don’t like this approach- and it explains why the refereeing seemed clunky in some of the games this weekend.

Will GB start slow in the 1st quarter? Probably. Is SF with its running game and DBo a threat? Yes. Did DAL play a physical game against SF causing SF to experience attrition? Yes...Bosa and Warner did not finish the game. Who knows what else. Is GB healthier than when GB faced SF in SF? Yes...just having DB back is a vast improvement. (and I love what Yosh did this season). Is MLF a "deer" in KS headlights? Not after the last 2 season and especially after beating KS on the road. Will GB blow-out SF? Probably not. Will Dillon be used like Mjölnir? I sure hope so... GB with a late push 27...SF 17

At the end, they certainly could be especially with all the distractions and injuries. It could go down as one of the best total team efforts, coaches and front office included, because so many players contributed in a positive way. We get destroyed in our first game, lose Alexander, Z, Bak, Jenkins, start two rookies on O line. This could/should have been at best an 8-8 season.

I'm not taking away from the team effort- the contribution of so many is the major reason i'm not sure Rodgers deserves an MVP this year- but there's a list of teams from the 60's that were stronger in personnel and more dominant, at least 3 squads from 95-97 that were stocked with talent and dominated, and one could make an argument for the 15-1 team of recent years as well.

Again- that's just the Packers teams.

I'm also only referencing Packer teams. I'm just very excited about this team because it's a rarity to see a team ( in any sport) have this much success under such negative circumstances. It just shows heart and team work. I see it on the sidelines: Detroit game Patrick talking and urging Myers, haven't seen any players arguing/blaming this whole season. There was one little scene in the last game that I didn't like where Rodgers walks away from Love as Love is speaking to him. Hopefully I'm just paying too much attention to it.

Packers were up 17-0 on the road against a 2-0 SF team before they collapsed and needed late game magic from 12/7/2 to steal the W. GB has gotten better on both sides of the ball since Week 3 and SF looks like the same team. GB must start hot and finish strong. If they allow SF to hang around, 12 might see another playoff exit w/ his defense on the field. I don’t t that happens this year, this team is locked in.

Prediction: GB 34 - SF 24

The Niners need to run it. Make them pass, hassle Jimmy G, but run defend first. They rely on getting to the QB. Run hard at them early, tire the line, don’t worry to much about yards on the ground early, just force them to take it seriously. Hold them in the middle and unlock everything. I hope MVS is playing, then we can stretch them vertically, force safeties to respect the deep play.

Three things packers have to do: tackle, no turnovers, and penalty free, then Green bay wins. Dallas provided an example of what not to do.

SF vs Dallas: I don't think I have ever seen a DL maul and tackle an OL like Dallas did today, and it was hilarious to see the defender complain. I have never seen a Ref stand under center with 1 sec to go on clock, and not give the offense some more time. But then I have never seen a team leave their punting unit on the field after successful fake punt.

Not sure if Bosa plays next weekend or not. Sure looked like a neck injury live.

I don't think the official did anything wrong. He had to spot the ball. That takes a second or two. The offensive team does not get to spot the ball themselves. Also, the official had to sprint about 25 yards to get to the line of scrimmage before spotting the ball. It was an unbelievably bad decision for the Cowboys to run the QB draw and for Prescott to run so far before sliding.

Yeah, that was a very weird thing for the Cowboys to leave their punting team on the field after the fake punt. They seemed to be overthinking things.

Better be practicing setting the edge and plenty of playoff team ST fiascos to learn from and go over on film. Moving the chains and limiting penalties will go a long way in helping us exit SF from the playoffs. A lot of short yardage 5-15 yard pass plays and a steady diet of Dillon and Taylor with Jones working the edges. Dallas TE was open for the first down often. We have the right folks to beat SF. ML has to design a good game plan and players execute it. Glad AR can practice more than 1/2 a day per week because of his toe. Our offense will be more crisp with repetition. We should be able to put more pressure on the QB than Dallas did and let's not forget containment. Should be a good game. Hope our DL plays stout. GPG

Our D will be a factor for sure. They will want to keep 12 on the sideline and eat up clock. Keep the game close. We need to do the same to them. Don't settle for FG's need to score 7 in the gold zone. ST will be a factor as well.

In cold weather, every team should want its D getting rested. They don’t have the power running game we have. Funnel it inside. Pound them early and consistently and you open things up. Between Jones and the passing attack, we should be more than able to capitalize if we do the hard work up front.

I love this match-up ... Rodgers vs Garoppolo ... total mismatch
It will be zero degrees out and JimG will turn the ball over..
Dallas played a horrible undisciplined game 14 penalties ridiculous defensive holding calls
This is on McCarthy, the play calling was terrible ... Elliott, Pollard 40yrds rushing?
Dallas had no game plan to help D Prescott deal with the 49ners pressure.
The Niners got banged up.. Bosa, Warner would be big losses..
And I would much rather see L A rams go to Tampa instead of Lambeau ..
My first thought is that Green Bay will handle the niners easily...

The 49ers have played consecutive full-on-knock-down-drag-out games. The hitting in the Rams game was ferocious from start to finish. That's taken a toll. Had Dallas not handed the game to them (14 accepted penalties? JHFC) we'd be overthinking how we were going to beat the Rams for the third time in 12 months, or how on earth we'll ever contain Kyler Murray.

These are the 49ers we saw today. Big. Effing. Deal. Kyle Shanahan my be an offensive genius, but he has a ventriloquists' dummy at QB. Make Jimmy Boy shoulder the load. He'll crack. I'm sure it won't be a relaxing game to watch, but I don't see us losing. Not to these guys.

As good as SF played, Dallas also played horrible with 14 penalties. I mean, the Cowboys tried over and over again to give the game away to the 49ers, and even still, the Niners let them hang around.

As Nagler tweeted "respect all, fear none." I respect the Niners, but do not fear them. We're at home, healthier and just got to sit back and watch our opponent put all kinds of stuff on tape (end arounds to Deebo, heavy dose of Mitchell, surprisingly not much from Kittle). Bosa has to make it out of the concussion protocol and even if Warner plays, will be on a bum ankle and probably not able to move as quickly as he normally would like to.

It'll be a close game, but I'll take our Packers over anyone in the NFL right now. The only team capable of beating the Packers, are the Packers.

The entitlement team has to control the clock to beat us. It’s that simple and I do not see that happening. The defense is suspect in the secondary and if Bosa and Warren play they will not be 100 percent. Jimmy G and the weather will help us out as well, Go Pack Go

IMAPayne - yeah you certainly are. What game were you watching today? Certainly not the Niners getting two TDs and 4 field goals. And still they almost gave the game away to Dallas who was equally in the giving mood all day. Jimmy G turns the ball over, Dallas and the Niners are two of the worst penalized teams in the playoffs. And now the Niners will need Bosa and Warner to play hurt (and that assumes Bosa clears the concussion protocol).

Meanwhile Bak is back at left tackle, Myers at center, Patrick at right guard so no more twists and stunts to fool Newman b/c he won't be playing and either Turner or Kelly at right tackle.

The only question mark is whether or not Gary and Preston Smith keep their rush lanes. If they do Clark and Lowery/Lancaster should cleanup the run with Campbell and Barnes waiting if needed.

The Packers have no one to blame but themselves if they come out flat, use poor technique etc. They were the better team in San Francisco and now it's time to show everyone how much better they are next weekend. Be the more physical team on defense and run Jones out side and Dillon all over the Niners defense setting up play action to Adams, MVS and Lazard. Go Pack Go.

West coast, warm weather team on a short week following a physical game, traveling to Green Bay to face a rested, mostly healthy Packers team with a Hall of Fame, two-time defending MVP at QB? I like our chances. Not gonna be a cakewalk but no way we should lose this game.

I agree and believe the stories are true about a little friction between coaches. I also know a coach who mentored a new coach absolutely hates to lose to him. There is added motivation for both coaches to win in addition than just the playoff win.

It will be good practice for Tampa Bay. Tampa Bay has been playing possum Vea and Suh are the best DL in the NFL…stats be damed. The good news is Quadzilla has some angry runs in him. Deguara, Daffney are going to have to play large roles these nest 2 games…go pack go.

Actually, while I hope he catches, the important thing is that the 49ers fear that he might and adjust their coverage accordingly. That vertical stretching weakens their run D and also opens things up for Cobb and Adams.

What we have to hope is that MVS is actually fit.

His back injury actually goes back past the Detroit game. He didn't practice last week.

MVS' line in his three games vs. SF under LaF:
6 catches, 10 targets (60%), 119 yards (20 ypc), 3 TDs.
(that includes one of the 2019 debacles where he caught 1/2 for 7 yds and no TD)

I think--if he's on the field--SF will definitely be keeping track of him.

I chuckled watching the game. This was so typical of Mike McCarthy's teams in Green Bay. They have the core of a really good team but repeatedly kept shooting themselves in the foot and making other stupid mistakes. The devil is in the details as they say, like being set before a snap.

I hope the 49'ers bring their long handles.

Interesting post on a Cowboys' site:

https://www.bloggingtheboys.com/2022/1/16/22887263/dallas-cowboys-game-b...

Jerry Jones refuses to discuss any coaching changes, yet says “When you get this combination of players together, you need to have success.” Hmm. Other posts have the Cowboys blaming the refs:

"When asked about the state of the game Prescott chose to partly blame the officials... 'The fans felt the same way as us. I guess that’s why the refs took off and got out of there so fast. I think everybody is upset with the way this thing played out.'"

Prescott also supported the fans who threw things at the refs as they left the field. That might not play well in NY...

I want to add that in the comments on that article, the commenters are like "stop whining and bitching - we lost without the refs' help" and "For every penalty call, there was a replay to support the call, so just shut up and accept it." Not a Cowboys fan at all, of course, but this is a nice change from what we see from Vikings fans.

Wow.

GBP wins the LOS on both sides of the ball against anyone when healthy and motivated. I know they are healthy, I hope to see them motivated from the get-go Saturday night. Secondary will be hard to pass against, but they better come ready to be physical in the run game and help out the front 7, especially vs SF. Its gonna take a team effort, but we have the team for it, just gotta execute and play fast and hard.

This is the time to see if MLF has learned his lessons on playoff coaching and fulfilling his all gas no brake mantra. Now is the time to use all of the regular season tape to implement the "illusion of complexity" and bring some wrinkles that baffle the opponent. Made even easier with players returning from injury with little scheme usage on tape. MVS as decoy to stretch DBs leaving lanes for the run. Dillon early and Jones late. Mix it up!

Use the line dominance to push ahead and then bury the opposition with constant pressure, O and D. Do not let up or get conservative. When this formula is working the stripes will attempt to keep the game close, be prepared for it! The further ahead we get, the more the stripes will look for any little thing to call. The time to use absolute best technique with no shortcuts is when you are ahead comfortably, no let downs to let the refs dictate play.

I think SF has a very dominant Oline in the run game more than in Pass-pro, as I see them pushing defenders around and any RB they got back there can find nice holes for 8+ yards. Now they got Deebo, to change the pace and attack the perimeter. They got a nice thing going. At least no elusive QB to worry about.

They move their TEs to the perimeter efficiently and Deebo can cut on a dime. Lowry And Lancaster have to keep position. Use Kenny Clark in more 3 tech and let Slaton cover the Nose with Lancaster to clog up the 49r running lanes. Not much hope for Keke to show up at this point in time. Barnes must have a Big Game.

Once again while watching a 49ers game all I heard was the genesis of Kyle Shanahan. WHY in the hell a guy with a 39-42 overall record in the regular season, been to the playoffs in two of his five seasons as HC is beyond me.

He's constantly given a pass if his teams suffer injuries, yet MLF and his coaching staff were coaching the Green Bay Packers to victory with FOUR of his starting offensive linemen injured and the only starter from week one was a rookie RG.

My hope other than the Packers stomping the shit out of the 49ers is MLF is the one the announcers begin to recognize and talk about, NOT Kyle Shanahan. WAIT...Let's look at it this way...

MLF... 39-10
KS...... 39-42

Is it really THAT HARD to figure out?

I've never understood the Kyle Shanahan lovefest. As you've stated, he's a sub .500 coach, yet I keep hearing what a genius he is. Same thing with his dad. Once Elway retired, he won, I believe, like one playoff game the next 10-11 years.

If GB wins, particularly in convincing fashion, I hope MLF finally sheds the "little brother" image between him and Shanahan for good.

One thing is certain, he SHOULD shed that image. I'm hoping for a BOWOUT in epic proportions. A 38-3 or 45-10 game would be pretty awesome and IMO not out of the realm of possibilities.

Great advice but I rarely watch a game where I'm watching the "Live Version"... I always am pausing the game for whatever reason so what I do is record all Packers game and watch the recorded version.

I know, it's sounds a little off but it works for me. Besides, where do I find Laravie? Is he on the Sirius XM version? If so I could make more of an effort to at least try it because Aikman and Buck will be there Saturday...(UGH!)... Hopefully it's so cold they won't talk as much!

Packers are healthy and getting healthier. Instead of playing in half empty Lambeau we will have the full effect of the home field advantage. Saturday night can’t come soon enough. GPG!

This game makes me as nervous as a nine-tailed dog in a room full of rocking chairs. A few years ago, SF beat the Packers with strategic passing by Jimmy G in the regular season, then got run out of the stadium in the playoffs. Of course, they could be playing the Little Sisters of the Poor, and I'd be edgy, so take this with a big grain of salt. But get ready for a tight game. Early leads will mean nothing. Expect a tightly contested schlobber knocker.
