Packers Snap Counts Vs. The Vikings - Week 7, 2023

The Vikings couldn't find the jugular in the first half but eventually got it done.

The inactive players were S Zayne Anderson, OLB Brenton Cox, CB Robert Rochel, WR Malik Heath, and OT Caleb Jones.  The Packers did not elevate any players from the Practice Squad.  Emanuel Wilson and Sean Clifford were active but did not play.

2023 for me has always been about evaluating Jordan Love and developing the young roster.  I predicted a 6-11 record, which looks a little optimistic at this point but is still doable.  That said, it is time to become blunter with my assessments.  Now that we are 7 games into the season, we fans should be looking for improvement by the second and third-year players and should be hoping for improvements from the rookies over the last half of the season.

Player Snaps % STs
Myers 68 100
Runyan 68 100 3-13%
Jenkins 68 100
Tom 68 100
Nijman 50 74 9-39%
Walker 18 26 3-13%
Newman     3-13%
Rhyan     3-13%

The Packers only rushed running backs 13 times for 39 yards (3.0-yards/carry) for the game, and just 6 times for 28 yards in the first half.  Their success rate was pretty good.  The first drive was a 2 yard pass to Musgrave followed by a nice 7-yard run by Dillon.  After a penalty by each team (one of which negated a nice 20-yard pass to Doubs), Dillon had no where to got on 3rd and 1 which forced a punt.  The next possession was a perfectly fine 4-yard run by Jones on first down, a drop by Jones followed by a drop by Musgrave (on a more difficult catch) and a punt.  The third possession featured a 12-yard sack on 2nd and 5, followed by a delay of game to make it 3rd and 21, forcing a punt.  Walker's man got the sack, though it was easily longer than 2.5 seconds after the snap.  The fourth possession was another perfectly fine 4-yard gain by Jones, followed by a Runyan hold to make it 2nd and 16, which forced a punt.  The Packers fifth possession got multiple first downs, but it was two steps forward and one step backwards as the drive featured penalties by both sides.  There were successful runs of 6, 7 and 4 yards, and ended with a missed field goal negated by a Viking offsides penalty, and then a successful 30-yard field goal by Carlson.  Love was hit 7 times and sacked twice.  There was pressure but he also had some good pockets.

Rasheed Walker was removed from the game and replaced by Nijman late in the first quarter after committing a penalty and allowing a sack.  Nijman fared better than Walker, who returned late in the game due to an injury to Nijman.  That said, so far this season Walker arguably has not been worse than Myers or Runyan, or even Jenkins overall.  As an offensive tackle more often out on an island, Walker's miscues are just more noticeable.  The Vikings' interior defensive players, particularly NT Harrison Phillips, had their way with the offensive line.  This whiff by Myers noted by Mike Wahle in a video clip is pretty equivalent Walker getting beaten by a sack.  [As it happens, Wonnum beat Walker on the same play, but Phillips demolished Dillon already.]  Zach Tom is the only offensive lineman playing quality snaps.  Fans have to hope the Jenkins' recent poor play is due to injury, given that the Packers just made him then second-highest paid guard in the NFL.  Rasheed Walker can play in the NFL especially if he gets more consistent with his technique.  It might be good to give Walker a break but at some point the Packers need to reinsert Walker into the lineup because Nijman is extremely unlikely to be on the team next season.

Player Snaps % STs
Jones 35 51
Dillon 35 51 5-22
Wilson DNP

Jones had a drop and a fumble that was recovered by Elgton Jenkins.  He gained 29 yards on just 7 carries (4.1-yard average) and added 17 yards on 4 receptions.  It looked like the Packers wanted to make him an important part on the offensive plan but once again did not give him enough touches.  Dillon gained 11 yards on 6 carries for a meager 1.8-yard per carry average.  He caught all 5 of his targets for 41 yards, including a nice 16-yard gain.  I actually thought Dillon looked fine: he was met in the backfield multiple times.  The Packers ran the ball just 6 times in the first half even though the halftime score was 10-3.  Jordan Love attempted 15 passes in the first half even though the score was by no means out of hand.  That's on the play caller.

Player Snaps % STs
Musgrave 49 72
Kraft 19 28 11-48%
Deguara 5 7 15-65%
Sims 5 7 9-39%

Luke Musgrave can catch 4-yard passes in the flat with the best of them.  He isn't as good about turning upfield like a gazelle to gain yards after the catch or breaking tackles.  He runs the wrong route, appears to not know the snap count at times, and is a willing if unsuccessful blocker.  As a rookie, he needs to play.  I'd just like to see him run some vertical routes up the seam or even split wide at times, and show the ability to adjust to a ball mid-air and turn upfield without losing his balance.  Musgrave caught 2 of 3 targets for 9 yards.  Kraft, Deguara, and Sims had no statistics.

Player Snaps % STs
Love 68 100
Clifford DNP

Love completed 24 of 41 passes (58.53%) for 229 yards (5.59-yards/attempt) with 1 TD and 1 INT.  His passer rating was 72.1.  It is fair to say that Love's receivers are not doing him any favors but it is also fair to mention that Love doesn't do them many favors, either.  Moreover, Love doesn't do his offensive linemen favors sometimes when he moves around in the pocket: sometimes he moves towards the trouble and/or changes the angle in ways that are  disadvantageous for his blocker.  Love is hopping a lot in the pocket.  It also isn't just accuracy, either.  Sometimes the ball should have arrived a tick or two sooner.   The pass to Wicks (Edit - It was Reed - you can watch the play here at the 6:22 mark) that was intercepted was thrown a tick late and it was also under thrown.  It allowed the defender to close, get his arm between Reed's hands and Reed's body and pull the ball out.  One can argue that Reed needs to bring that pass in while also noting better accuracy and throwing it in rhythm would have helped Reed.

There is a lot of chaos on offense, with missed blocks, a mediocre run game at best, and suspect pass protection to go with drops and improperly run routes.  The team needs to stabilize things in order to get a decent chance to evaluate Jordan Love.

Player Snaps % STs
Doubs 56 82
Watson 56 82
Reed  53 78 1-4%
Wicks 23 34
Toure 4 6

Watson caught 3 of 8 targets for 33 yards with a long of 17.  The Packers are trying to give Watson a chance to be a number one wide receiver.  Doubs caught 1 of 2 targets for 5 yards.  Reed caught his only target for 8 yards.  Wicks was targeted once and that was intercepted.  Toure had no statistics.  Essentially, the wide receivers were barely a factor in this game.

Player Snaps % STs
Clark 55 76 6-26%
Slaton 47 65 10-43%
Wyatt 35 49
Brooks 23 32 8-35%
Wooden 13 18 1-4%

T.J Slaton had a nice game with 9 tackles (4 solo) including 2 tackles for loss.  I have been down on Kenny Clark for a couple of years now, but he also had a better performance than his recent efforts.  Clark had 3 tackles (1 solo) including a tackle for loss and 2 QB hits, one of which was a sack.  Wyatt had a solo tackle and a fumble recovery.  Brooks had no defensive stats but blocked a field goal.  Wooden had an assisted tackle.  The Vikings only averaged 2-yards per carry, gaining 62 yards on 31 attempts.  The Vikings were able to pick up first downs the few times they ran the ball on third downs.  Generally, they were content to let Cousins dice up the defense.

Player Snaps % STs
Walker 72 100 7-30%
Campbell 67 93 7-30%
P. Smith 47 65 1-4%
Gary 46 64
Van Ness 26 36 7-30%
Enagbare 25 35 13-57%
Wilson     13-57%
McDuffie     13-57%
Welch     10-43%

Campbell had 14 tackles (10 solol) with 1 QB hit.  Quay Walker had 10 tackles (7 solo) and a pass defensed.  Preston Smith had 5 tackles (2 solo, both of which were sacks), including a tackle for loss, 1 pass defensed and 1 forced fumble.  Gary had 3 tackles (1 solo, a tackle for loss) and a QB hit.  Enagbare had two solo tackles, one of which was a tackle for loss, and an obvious roughing the passer penalty.  Van Ness had a pass defensed.  The Packers did not get enough pressure on Kirk Cousins, who had a lot of clean pockets.  He sliced up the defense though he was not able to find the jugular in the first half, which could have been a lot worse than 10-3.

Players Snaps % STs
Owens 72 100 9-39%
Douglas 72 100 9-39%
Alexander 72 100
Ford 72 100
Nixon 44 61 14-61%
Johnson, Jr. 4 6 7-30%
Ballentine     13-57%
Leavitt     13-57%
Valentine     9-39%

Nixon had his best game since week 3.  His play has been up and down, overall, but acceptable.  Ford and Nixon had 4 solo tackles (6 and 5 total, respectively).  Nixon broke up 2 passes.  Douglas had 5 tackles (3 solo).  He has been a godsend, though he gave up some receptions.  Alexander had 4 tackles (3 solo) and had a rough outing against in general and against Addison in particular.  Owens had 3 tackles (2 solo) and an unnecessary roughness penalty, which was technically probably correct.  He had a helmet to helmet with Akers at the goal line which was more egregious but it was not called.  Cousins completed 23 of 31 passes (74.19%) for 274 yards (7.87-yards per attempt).  That's a good day for a QB.

SPECIAL TEAMS:

Carlson missed a chip shot but was bailed out when CB Hall of the Vikings was penalized for being offsides.  Carlson then nailed a 30-yarder.  He also hit his only extra point attempt.  Whelan averaged 51.8 yards gross and 43.3 yards net.  He had a 38-yard punt fielded at the 21 and returned to the 25 yard line which could have been better.  He had another so-so punt effort but due to a penalty he got another chance and hit a better punt.

I would like to give a big shout out to Mark Murphy and Brian Gutekunst. You two have assembled the worst combination of players and coaches in the league. The decisions you two have made the past 5 years have destroyed this team. What we see is not growing pains of a young team, it's lack of talent and poor coaching.

Sometimes the ball should have arrived a tick or two sooner. The pass to Wicks???No try Reed???

Josh Metellus grabs bal from Jayden Reed and returns it 43 yards. It's on vikings highlights.

Time to be blunt while remembering that there is another 10 games in which to evaluate the players (yes and the coaches, which was vitriolic in the gut reactions comments).

Zach Tom had another pretty good day. Danielle Hunter was pretty quiet though he had a sack. Runyan only returns cheap. Ditto for Myers since he is under contract: he is better than replacement value but someone a team will always try to find an upgrade for. [GB should be looking for an upgrade but so far Steno can't admit that Myers isn't good.] Jenkins we have to hope will play better as he recovers from his MCL, otherwise we just made him the 2nd highest paid guard in the NFL to no purpose. We need to find out if Walker can be a swing tackle or more. Give him a few weeks off to work on his fundamentals because he is good when his footwork is good. Nijman isn't going to re-sign after the coaches dissed him short of paying him too much. Lots of work there.

Clark was better against the Vikings, but his performance is not comparable to his compensation. Slaton had a good game but this is his 3rd year so 2024 is a contract year. He is just average anyway. Wyatt is improving but he still gets pulled on run downs. tough to project Wooden or Brooks, but nothing special so far. There is some talent on the WR group but they aren't learning.

I think both Jenkins and Runyan are being hung out to dry by Myers not helping the right guy at the right time. Jenkins between Myers and Walker is making him look even worse. He doesn't look as stout though, so his injury might be playing into it also.

Every D coming in looks how the last one did it and follows through because the Packers can't or won't do anything about it.

If a C is a weak link it undoes the whole interior. Myers does. I’ve got to the point where until we end the Myers experience (presumably with Tom) we won’t run and we won’t consistently see a line not getting breached up the middle or pushed back towards the QB.

After Stenovich’s comments (such strong echoes of his eulogy ti Hanson) last week, it’s clear he is the problem. He is now our new Drayton, a coach who is consistently harming the team. As with Drayton, he needs to be removed now. In season.

Walker is another example. Nijman was, unsurprisingly given past play, considerably better. We need to mend our fences with Nijman.

As to Walker, he looks like he can do it at times, he just isn’t ready to do it consistently. This is only going to impede his chance to become a starter not help it. He had no business being put out there at blind side protector at this point.

This team was always going to be reliant on having the best OL it could in the run as well as the passing game. It very clearly hasn’t put its best out there and refuses to learn. LaFleur either can’t or won’t intervene, a consistent theme of his tenure.

The OL is certainly not the only issue on this team, but it’s a foundational one. It’s emblematic of the whole offensive muddle but it’s now obviously self impaired. Improve it and everything gets a little better. That starts with playing Nijman at LT, moving Tom to C and either playing Jones or Walker at RT. Personally, id try Jones at this point. Until we do, evaluating the rest of the offensive players is extraordinarily difficult.

Id remove Stenovich. It looks increasingly clear that the switcheroo was not a moment of madness but symptomatic of a man given far more discretion than he should be and it’s continued through Hanson, Newman, Nijman, Tom, Walker being utilized unwisely.

Only one step, not a total solution by any means, but one that can help us now and can not afford to be continued week after week as Drayton was.

Not dramatically , but he was. In addition he’s been exclusively at RT for some time and messed around mightily too. Let him settle and see, he had been considerably better at LT in the past.

Thanks, TGR.

I think that Love could help out the O-line, but that's putting the cart before the horse. I can understand why he's being jumpy.

Until they field even an average O-line we won't be able to evaluate anyone's game. O-line play has been the death nell of this team for a long time. Not so much in the regular seasons when the former QB could overcome some of it, but against playoff caliber teams, last season, or against good coaching teams even he couldn't do anything miraculous to save the team.

The D seems to be doing enough, but only enough for an efficient offense.

The D has not faced a good O. It’s not fire but it’s not great. The Vikings have struggled to run mightily. However, our secondary was very poor overall. Barry Ds can’t seem to have a good game on the ground and through the air. That’s not good enough. The D certainly wasn’t the problem yesterday, but it’s not where it needs to be and it’s not evolved. Given the talent, that’s not good enough to maintain past this season.

He’s playing while “day-to-day” on a bad back. He’s not 100% if that’s the case. What percentage is he? Who knows. This staff played King when he was hobbled, Nijman with one arm at RT last year. This could be a similarly poor decision.

It's not good enough to maintain past LAST season! I don't blame the players. A little less talk and a lot more action from Ja would be good, but usually he's an exceptional player. JB's on a mission to ruin every player he's given.

Yes, some rookies shine immediately, but many more take a few yrs ( Jennings, Nelson, and Adams). Some of the top WRs this year had 50 plus receptions in their rookie years, we might have 4 to build on. In addition, our young WRs did not come from colleges with high powered passing attacks which hampers progress in the pros, case in point Addison USC, Jefferson LSU.

We might have 4 WRs to build on?

Sorry but no. Bo Melton is our fastest WR. Malik Heath is a beast in his own right, even though he's our slowest. DuBose has great abilities. All 8 have talent to build on, and should only be out of the picture if somebody forces them out in TC.

Get coaches who actually develop players, and draft other positions of need.

It will be interesting to see what happens to the coaching staff at the end of the season. Will LeFleur (if he is still there), continue to hang on to coaches who simply don't know how to develop players or generate schemes that get the most out of the available talent, a la Joe Barry, or will heads roll? I don't see one iota of development, in particular, with the receivers , o line, and d backs. In fact, one could easilya argue, they have regressed!

I like Petek's viewpoint, there is some voice of reason in it.

A small percentage of wr's have immediate impact, they might show flashes, but there aren't many Justin Jeffersons out there.
***************
The difference with the Packers vs years past and now is...
In the past, they usually had a stable of veteran receivers. The rookies could come in and learn at their own pace and yes, the good ones always showed flashes. But they were allowed to develop.
See Jordy, JJ, Adams

Today, in Gute's world, the Packers need rookie and 2nd year wr's and tight ends, to become highly productive right away.
Because....they've given themselves no other choice.

If you think todays Packers adhere to draft and develop principles, you are sadly mistaken, or you just don't understand the concept of D and D.
*
So the question then is....why are the Packers in this position that the success of our offense is dependent on rookie draft picks and 2nd year hopefuls?

1) Failed previous draft picks at these positions

2) High value draft picks resourced to the defense for a long period of time. Our ONLY first round pick on offense the last 12 years was on the bench for 3 years, costing us 2 draft picks.

3) Failed (weak) free agent signings (Band aids)
See Watkins and Funchess.

4) Looking towards the future....there was no urgency until Adams was gone.
Obviously Gute was drafting for the future starting with Love, drafting Dillon, and all those defensive players.
He wanted a strong running game, strong defense, and his hand picked QB

5) Obvious neglect. This wasn't by accident, i believe Gute knew what he was doing (or...not doing).
Did he let the wr and tight end talent deplete to spite Rodgers?

I'm not sure about that, but it makes sense.

Bottom line.......
An unproven pass catching offense, is no way to try to develop a 1st year starting QB.
Why do i say that?

Have you watched these games?

thanks TGR always along with Jersey Al's columns the most helpful and informative. what i cannot get over and keep sounding like a broken record is how unprepared to play the team is week in and week out. the excruciatingly bad football of the first halfs with the second half "improved" performances being mostly phantom improvements because the other team knows it has the game in control and starts playing soft. playcalling is abysmal, play design vanilla and predictable, play execution incompetent.

I don’t buy the playing soft trope. In the 4th maybe. I think what we see is the futility (beyond the lack of points) of whatever the first halves have been designed to be being highlighted by what happens when the game plan has to be abandoned. What it tells us I’d that we can move the ball (albeit with risk), we just aren’t figuring out how till until too late and after we have to start improvising.

Neither Love nor his receivers have looked very good lately.

Love looked a bit indecisive on some of his drop backs yesterday and his deep throws just aren't very good at all. When he makes up his mind and just pulls the trigger, his short and intermediate throws are good. When he thinks too much, he is late and sometimes off target on his short and intermediate throws. Love just should avoid the deep ball - frequently late and off target (and intercepted).

That said about Love, his receivers maybe the ones making him indecisive. Far too many dropped balls and very few wins on contested balls. I didn't count the number of drops yesterday, but other commenters thought it was at least seven if not more (if you add seven drops, Love's completion percentage rises to a very respectable 75.6%). Regarding contested balls, not only do the Packer receivers not catch the ball, but opposing DB's seem to come up with ball quite regularly (thinking of Watson getting outjumped by a 5'9" DB in the end zone for a pick a couple of games ago and Reed getting both hands on the ball yesterday and then getting it taken away by a Viking DB). The Packer receivers are not helping Love at all.

Good to see Nijman finally get the call at LT and I thought he played adequately and certainly better than Walker. I agree with TGR that Nijman won't be in Green Bay next year if the current coaching staff is retained. Given how the season is progressing (or regressing if you prefer), it is entirely possible that the current coaching staff may not be here in 2024 and Nijman might stay for a new regime.

Strategy is not trying the deep ball until the O line establishes dominance, and high probability plays are dialed in. Neither has happened.

JL10 being indecisive I attribute first to an O line he cannot and should not trust, and second, coverage. Although #11 was open a LOT.

Our WRs not ever winning a contested catch is at least partly coaching. Catching vs dropping is at least partly coaching too at this point; it should not be tolerated. It's fixable, or at least improvable. Fewer targets and more targets per person is one possible solution, requiring them to practice CTFB more is another. Hours per day. I cannot be convinced coaches are handling this in a competent fashion.

Same can be said for fundamentals including footwork on the O line. I'd love to see Nijman stay, and Mt Caleb at least tried. Coaches need to be fired in order for that to happen, apparently.

SST: I agree that contested catches and drops are coaching issues. These should be fundamentals for a receiver and I don't think LaFleur's staff spend much time on fundamentals. I suspect this coaching staff is much more scheme driven than player focused and it shows every week.

We've seen too many contested passes to the WRs and TEs. Some of that is accuracy. Some of it is throwing it a tad late which allows the DB to close. Some of it is the route running. Yes, we think the receivers should come back to the ball more or fight harder on contested passes, but so often they seem to have a hand in their face or between their own hands and body when the pass arrives.

The other point was that both lines (OL and DL) need an infusion of talent. Kenny Clark is due $17M in cash in 2024. He hasn't been worth that kind of money. Fans really like Kenny, and he still is good for a monster play in each game, but those are flashes instead of the consistent play he used to provide. Now, I thought he held up better against double teams against the Vikings (and he was doubled a fair amount).

Too many open looking starting spots for 2024 to fill with one first, two seconds and third. Gotta start hitting on a few day-three guys. Slaton and Tom aren't enough.
