Packers Snap Counts Versus The Eagles: Week Twelve

The Packers find a pulse on offense, but remain comatose on defense.

Sean Rhyan was suspended for six games for a PEDs violation.  If he does not appeal it, he will miss the rest of the 2022 season.  He will not count on the 53-man roster.  Rhyan will not be paid for those six games and will have to forfeit some of his signing bonus.  Indeed, the Packers are required by the CBA to file for a forfeiture.  The Packers should gain salary cap space of $235,000 due to the reduction in his base salary ($705K/18 weeks times 6 games) and $75,476 for the forfeiture ($226,428/18 times 6).  Rhyan will now count $696,428 against the salary cap.

The Packers claimed Justin Hollins off the waiver wire, which means the Packers have to pay him for three weeks ($53,611 per game times 3 games = $160,833).  Hollins cap number for the rest of the season is $375,278.  Hollins is an Edge player from the Rams.  Hollins has played about 50% of possible defensive snaps for the Rams this year.  In 308 snaps, Hollins recorded 26 tackles (15 solo), 1 tackles for loss, 1 sack, and 3 quarterback hits.  For what it is worth, Hollins has a 53 grade from Pro Football Focus.  For context, Jonathan Garvin's grade is 59, and LaDarius Hamilton's grade is 35 for the season.

The Packers waived Patrick Taylor to make room for Hollins, and then re-signed Taylor to the practice squad after he cleared waivers.  Since he was exposed to waivers, the Packers can elevate Taylor three more times.

Which they did.  The Packers have elevated Innis Gaines for the second time this season and Patrick Taylor once again from the practice squad to the 53-man roster for the Eagles game.  Taylor can be elevated two more times during the regular season.

DeVondre Campbell, Shemar Jean-Charles, and Romeo Doubs were inactive due to injury.  Jonathan Ford, Rasheed Walker, and safety Jonathan Abram (who has had a couple of penalties on special teams in back-to-back games) are the healthy scratches.  That suggests that the Packers preferred to have OT Luke Tenuta available instead of Rasheed Walker in case of emergency.

The Packers appeared to have a high octane offense in the first half.  In 6 possessions (not counting the one-play kneel down at the end of the half), they scored 3 touchdowns, punted just once, and lost possession twice due to two interceptions.  The time of possession was not lopsided though the Eagles held the edge, 16:27 to 13:33.  The Eagles ran a lot more plays, 42 to 27.

The Packers ran the ball 11 times for 77 yards in the first half, a 7.0-yard average.  Rodgers was hit twice, though both were for sacks.  Rodgers completed 9 of 13 passes for 118 yards, a 9.08 yard per target average, with 2 TDs and 2 INTs.  The Packers were efficient, scoring both times they entered the red zone.  The Packers averaged 6.74 yards per play.  The Eagles averaged 7.02 yards per play while running a lot more plays.  Of note, the Packers failed to convert any of their third down opportunities and finished the game 1 for 7.

The Packers received the kickoff in the second half down 27-20.  They started with two runs that netted 3 yards, and Rodgers was sacked on the third and seven, forcing a punt.  The Eagles drove 86 yards in 11 plays for a touchdown to make it 34-20.  The Packers attempted to stay with the run and with their running backs on their next drive, with uneven results.  There were runs of 1, 10, 2 (defensive holding penalty accepted), 7, 6 and 1 on a 3rd and 4.  A false start by Nijman backed the Packers up to the Philadelphia 11, so the Packers settled for a field goal.  The Packers only ran the ball 9 times in the second half (3 for 13 for Dillon, and 6 for 17 yards for Jones) and only completed two passes to their running backs (2 to Dillon for 16 yards) during the 24 plays they ran in the second half.

After Rodgers left with an injury, fans got to see Jordan Love hit Christian Watson perfectly in stride on a medium crosser and then watch Watson blow through the Eagles' secondary for a 63-yard touchdown.  This offense looks and feels different when Watson is on the field.  Two DBs went with Watson on Cobb's touchdown reception.  I do not know that he commanded a double team, but DBs are aware of him, now.  It wisdom of using both second round picks to draft Watson remains to be seen, but I cannot help thinking this season might have been different had Watson been healthy throughout training camp.  I look forward to seeing Watson, Doubs, Lazard, Cobb and Toure playing in these remaining games.  Yes, I have moved into evaluating mode.

As a note, Toure got the start at wide receiver.  If that was a reward for his work lately, I am all for it.

I find these statistics from Pro Football Focus interesting.  You can read more here.

Jones 35 22 4 3 56 2.55
Dillon 21 10 4 3 24 2.40

This is a new statistic to this series of articles.  To give some context, according to this Fantasy Pro article, in 2021 Cooper Kupp led the NFL with 3.12 yards per route run, while Davante Adams was third at 2.81.  D.K. Metcalf ranked 20th in the NFL in 2021 with an average of 1.94.  Since Dillon rushed 8 times, we can deduce that he stayed in to block 3 times while Jones stayed in to block just once since he had 12 carries to go with his 22 routes run.  As for the tight ends, I believe that it counts as a route even if the TE might was required to chip before he released to run a route.

This defense is bad.  The defensive line does not make enough stops on its own, and fails to keep offensive linemen from getting to the second level.  Players at every level routinely miss tackles.  I think it is in part scheme and philosophy, but if Head Coach LaFleur is accurate when he cited 15 missed tackles, well the defensive coordinator can't make the tackles himself.

The defensive line simply lost the battle in the trenches.  Yes, Jarran Reed flashed a few times and Slaton scraped down and made a nice stop for a 2-yard gain on one play.  They even acquited themselves well on some 3rd and 4th and short plays.  Still, the Eagles rushed for 363 yards on 49 rushes (7.4 yards per carry) and 3 touchdowns.  The defense only had 3 quarterback hits (Smith, Reed and Hollins) and two sacks.

Quay Walker had 11 tackles (4 solo plus several missed tackles), while Ford and Amos finished with 9 tackles apiece (6 and 5 solo, respectively).  Ford is a hard nosed player at least.  He forced the fumble that Walker returned to the Eagles' 13-yard line.  Douglas had 8 tackles, while Enagbare, another bright spot for the future, finished with 7 tackles (3 solo) and a pass defensed.  Enagbare had 6 tackles in the first half (3 solo), so he had just one assisted tackle in the second half.  [I am not implying anything here - I just noticed the anomaly.]

Having been claimed on waivers just last Tuesday, the Packers gave OLB Justin Hollins 21 snaps, the same number as Jonathan Garvin.  Hollins finished with 2 solo tackles, 2 tackles for loss, and a sack.  Garvin did not have any statistics.

SPECIAL TEAMS:

Keisean Nixon is certainly exciting.  He had two long kickoff returns that gave the Packers good field position, and one that gave the Packers the ball at their own 10-yard line after he muffed it.  He returned 5 kickoffs for 172 yards, a 34.4 yard average with a long of 53.  There were no punt returns.  The coverage was fine.  Crosby missed an extra point perhaps due in part to a sloppy snap/hold.  Crosby seems to have trouble getting touchbacks on his kickoffs.

WR: 2.49 (down a little)

TE: 1.37

RB: 1.14 (some sets with both Dillon and Jones)

DL: 2.39 (very low number considering how they got gashed, but they wanted fast guys for Hurts)

ILB: 1.875

OLB: 1.925

DB: 4.84

I could not find a complete list for yards per route run. I see that Adam Humphries was 86th in 2021 with 0.87 yards per route run. I would be curious about the number for the 32nd and 64th ranked players. Jalen Raegor was the least efficient receiver with at least 50 targets with a 0.62 average. Robby Anderson wanted big money but had just 0.83 yards per route run.

Jones and Dillon are a nice pairing. They have to think about keeping Jones.

Clark is not playing at an elite level. The last few games he got pushed around way too much. PFF noted that OC Jason Kelce did not give up a pressure. Clark is regressing, so if that means cutting his snaps back, which I am reluctant to do given his $17.1M price tag, better good play for fewer snaps than average at best play for a lot of snaps. 57 snaps isn't that many, but something has to give. Philly had 11 runs of 10 or more yards. Hurts picked up 10 first downs on his 17 rushing attempts (only the second QB in the NFL to hit double digits in a game this season). Yeah, the run D is trash.

GB misses Gary, though it is hard to say they would have stopped the run better with him in there with a straight face. Preston Smith is a worker, and a nice enough player, but one should not want him as OLB #1.

Hurts didn't hurt GB with his arm, with the exception of the pass for a TD to Quez Watkins to cap off the first half with a go ahead TD. Douglas had good coverage, that's just a nice throw, route and good timing.

Eagles converted 8 of 15 3rd downs and 2 of 3 fourth downs. That's not bad, but GB is terrible on defense on first and second downs. One game they gave up scores on four consecutive possessions while the opponent only faced one third down play. The opponent scored 24 points (3 TD and a FG, and the field goal was only because time ran out in the first half!) on those four consecutive possessions.

"Jones and Dillon are a nice pairing. They have to think about keeping Jones."

Agreed. He plays hard, makes this offense click, and is a focal point for opposing DCs. They'll restructure his deal this offseason to push some of his hit off on future caps. The OL has improved as the season has progressed which, coupled with the emergence of Watson, has this offense playing better.

Rodgers goes out after the game and says he wants to play next week. Can't fault the guy for wanting to cling to any last hope of saving his job and somehow going out on top. But this is where leadership has to understand that there are competing interests here and what Rodgers wants may not be what's best for the team.

Letting 12 back on the field because the team isn't mathematically eliminated from the playoffs - rather than putting Love out there for true evaluation - would be as criminal as bringing back Joe Barry as DC next season.

Thanks, TGR. Always look forward for snap counts.

Seemed like Love played more then 10 snaps. I thought he looked good. Wonder what will happen when the D plans for him? Hope we find out. Don't think we lose anything if Rodgers is playing poorly and hurt.

I agree. Plus if he was healthy during the season as well. In addition, what would the season have looked like if he would have caught that first pass from Rodgers against Minni in the first game.

That was a longer thought that got edited down (and left the It instead of changing it to the). I wondered if in hindsight I would still draft Watson. He could turn out to be great, though time will tell. I thought GB was good enough to get by with Watson running some goes while he gets up to speed. I edited it because I really don't know which receiver might have helped salvage the early part of this season. We seem to have an offense with Watson on the field.

In this limited sample size, Watson seems to take more hard hits than you'd like to see. Maybe it's just how he's being used.

Watson plus Doubs might be a good core. I think they will compliment each other well. They are just faster and more sudden. Add Toure and teams have 3 players that could get away from their man and beat defenders. It’s increasingly obvious that Lazard can’t. Cobb is really the only veteran who’s been able to create. Credit to him but the reality is we need to get Doubs healthy and let the youth grow around him for the rest of the season. Jones is a better receiver given the chance than Watkins or Lazard, who is a number 4 complimentary and situational piece who needs less snaps and more threat around him.

Don't you think that the biggest plus for Watkins and Lazard is their blocking downfield? Haven't seen that stand out much the last couple games. I think the speed of Watson offsets those blocks by running off defenders that could affect the runs.

The #22 should have been used on Watson, then the twos were there for the OT and TE,or Pierce. Walker is better off the edge/OLB. He is not a plugger. Gutedkunst thought Walker was better than Lloyd. We will see.

The defense couldn't tackle my grandmother. I don't believe the 15 missed tackles - I suspect it is more than double that number. Quay Walker got juked by Hurts at least four times. Lowery needs to go and the Packers should be giving Wyatt more snaps for the rest of the season. Others noticed this and I agree - Clark looks like his left arm is hurt and he is protecting it. And Barry and the entire defensive coaching staff needs to go - now.

The offensive line looked decent last night and that was against a pretty good and deep Philly D-line. They opened holes for the run game and protected well in pass pro. Dillon looks so much better when the QB is under center and he can get a running start. I liked what I saw of Love during his brief appearance. He was composed and threw accurately in a pressure situation. The Packers need to sit Rodgers and find out what they have in Love. And Watson looks like a blossoming star - great speed and good hands.

Lowry got caved by Philly's OL repeatedly last night on run downs. He's the weak point, and they mashed him.

"I liked what I saw of Love during his brief appearance. He was composed and threw accurately in a pressure situation. The Packers need to sit Rodgers and find out what they have in Love. "

Love was a little behind his receivers on a couple throws, and a couple were high, but his pass-catchers helped him out. I think that's to be expected under the circumstances (limited experience, coming in late, playing from behind), but he needs to be more on point if he starts against the Bears or those will turn into picks.

This is an excuse to give 12 four weeks on IR for his thumb and ribs and he doesn't lose face in being benched for Love. I think the Packers take that opportunity. Not a murderer's row of defenses down the stretch, but several credible ones.

Love wasn't perfect, but he played well under some trying circumstances. It is tough to come into a game late and 14 points down. The defense knows exactly what you are going to do offensively and yet the Packers scored 10 points and stayed in the game.

Lazard helped Love when Love threw behind him, but Jones dropped a perfect pass on the sideline. On balance I think the receivers didn't do anymore for Love than they did for Rodgers.

There were three missed tackles on the very first run by Hurts: Walker, Amos, and Savage. I don’t believe there were only a dozen more missed tackles. Next training camp, Tackling 101 should be mandatory daily.

What is no sense for me that Watkins ("Packers one) got 4 snaps and Toure 2. They robbed Toure for those 4 snaps. Stupid on all accounts.

Jordan Love did well. He did not shake the earth, but entering the game under circumstances that Packers was trying to catch the deficit I say he play very good. Some of his throws was slighty behind the receivers, but still good enough to be catched (Lazard and Cobb). Ball to Watson was on spot. Two incomlete passes was under pressure and to well covered receivers, so the passes went out of their reach.

I would like to see Jordan Love playing complete game vs very good D. It will be only way for Packers to properly evaluate him. This short time showed promise that he would be at least over average QB.

What a find was Ford. True hitting S.

I still can't get over the differences in snaps...closing in on 2:1. If you'd told me that would be the breakdown in snaps, I would've expected the Packers to have lost 45-14 or the like. Thanks to fortuitous field position, the Packers wrangled 33 points...on 49 snaps. Wow...where has this offense been?

Hollins played hard and seemed to play fast. He seemed to be setting the edge OK. Might be a nice find off the waiver wire.

The yd/route (and routes run, in general) is a nice add TGR. Thanks for adding this for our benefit. Always appreciate the snap counts and the fast turnaround on the article, friend!

There is something wrong in the front 7. That was clear last night. Too many wide open run lanes into the second level. The DL is broken, particularly on the right side, but so too often was the protection behind it. This is a familiar theme and it can not be all on Walker.

I see it as partially the wrong mix of people on the DL. We just need to be more stout. I’m not sure what’s up with Clark, but if he’s playing that role his loss of weight seems unhelpful. Slaton looked better in the middle. Overall though, it just looks like a group that is not playing as a unit. The front 7 looks like our secondary has all season. There’s something wrong at the schematic and coaching level certainly in both areas.

I see no great upside in replacing Barry mid season when there are few available alternatives and while we have the same Head Coach. However, I think it’s got to the point where the extent of the issues probably mean it has to happen, just to stop the rot and loss of confidence. Barry is a dead duck, just give Gray the reins for now.

If this team keeps LaFleur, I don’t see things changing. It’s a team that reflects his character. Any new HC needs to bring his own people in. I’m not sure how many of any of the coaches have earned a return next year.

Love moved the game much faster than Rodgers and that, in a very brief snapshot, seemed to help the receivers and challenge the coverages. Could it be that the Rodgers approach is helping Ds as much as he thinks it helps him beat them? Love also appeared to be going through his progressions. If the game position were different, I wonder if he’d have run a few too-looked like there were some easy first downs on the ground available a couple of times.

Lazard was mostly a non factor again. I think he’s better not on the field with Cobb. We need more speed and I’d rather see Cobb at this point and youth. We need players who can make things happen out there. It was good to see Jones actually running true WR routes. He’s better than Watkins. I’d like to have seen him with Toure and Watson as a group. More speed, more suddenness and ability to get open and capitalize on spaces opened by Watson.

Rodgers is already lobbying to play against the Bears. I think that it’s time for the team to accept that the mathematical sliver of a chance is no excuse for not starting Love and with a game plan for him. Rodgers would need to be truly healthy to even justify debate at this point as I see it. He’s not.

While I don't expect it, I hope the Packer management finds some intestinal fortitude and sits Rodgers at least until he is healthy if not for the remainder of the season. The Packers need to find out what they have in Love and whether he is the next Packer QB or if they need to draft another QB next spring.

That answer is far more important than playing Rodgers over the next few games.

The Eagles have a good offense, best I've seen this year. The offensive line is the best I've seen this year, and it's something I wish the Packers had. Not just a decent line, but the best in the league.

This was our best offensive game of the season, and our worst defensive game of the season. I'm not going to name names because when you give up 40, there's quite a few people involved in that. Two short fields didn't help. But the main damage was done right up the middle with the offensive line just pushing us out of the way.

I had speculated that at some point Rodgers would have an injury that would require him to sit, and now we have it. He had a good first half, but accomplished little in the second half, and it was good to see Love come in and play well in a brief appearance. I'm hoping we give Rodgers at least another week to heal.

Despite this disappointing season, I think we'll rebound quickly, as we have from our previous disappointing seasons over the last 30 years. We have some good talent on this team.

We could still finish 9-8, you are correct, and that might be good enough.

My concern is that if we don't win at least two of our last 5, this will be only the second team in the last 30 years that didn't win at least 6 games (2005). Of course, we were in the Championship game two years later, and on our way to the Super Bowl until Favre favred it up.

I guess the top brass saw Quay Walker's speed and did not check enough film to see if he could tackle running backs. He is quite simply a liability in the middle, and teams will run over our middle to their heart's content. Another weak draft, except for some possible finds in the later rounds.

When the Steelers draft defensive players their first check is if they can tackle. Ours is RAS. It’s nice to cover ground but to rush and then miss the tackle creates big plays. But why are we still playing two down linemen when they are running down our throats? Easy access to our second level for their O/l..

The Packers are 23rd in scoring defense, the Steelers are 25th.

Pro-football-reference credits the Packers with 40 missed tackles in 12 games, and Pittsburgh with 44 in 10.

We replace a down lineman with a quicker, more agile defender against a guy like Hurts. I think it's a good idea. So does Bill Bellichek, if you watch New England. So do other teams. The runs that really left a mark on us were the ones by Hurts, and a LB has a better chance of catching Hurts than Slaton does.

People should give some credit to the Eagles. That's a good offensive line and Hurts is definitely an elusive guy. Our run defense had their worst game of the season against them, and that's not a coincidence. Losing Gary didn't help, either.

BREAKING: The Packers need to be more like the 3-7 Pittsburgh Steelers; a team that last won a Super Bowl in 2009, and last missed the playoffs in 2019. (source: wildbill - Steeler Insider).

Need a new Center! Myers is too slow. Does not pick up the stunts. Pressure is coming right at him.

Finally somebody mentions meyers.

i thought i was the only one who saw his struggles on a game by game basis. he gets out and makes a block now and then. that gets teams killed. centers need to do their job on EVERY play. Consistency starts in the middle and Meyers has been consistently inconsistent and in a bad way, he shrinks when the play is needed the most. He absolutely sucks on third downs.

sheesh, we coulda had Creed Humphrey.

The consensus number one center in the draft and gutey out-thinks himself and takes Meyers over creed. What a boneheaded move.

Last night's game reminds me of a game couple yrs back against San Fran. Remember the name "Raheem Mostert" ?. He ran for over 220 yds and 4 TDs against GB that day, and he has been in the NFL since 2015, with a career rushing just over 2100yds. GB's problem against the run had been a problem for yrs. A journeyman like Mostert looked like a HOF player running against GB.

Oh, I "remember" the name Raheem Mostert alright, or "whatever" his "real name" was, but I'll "tell you what," Jalen "Hurts" is no "journeyman" and he can legit "carry the rock" and "make guys miss." He may, in fact, one day be inducted into the "HOF."

PFF grades per Zach Kruse.

First, the fifth worst offensive grade is 65.7, and a 65 is verging on above average.

Top 5 Offense:
Dillon (90), Love (85), Watson (84), runyan (81), Lewis (76).

Bottom 5 Offense:
Davis (45), AR (58), Tonyan (61), Cobb (63), Nijman (65).

Top Defense:
Ford (89), Slaton (75), Nixon (73), Alexander (68), Hollins (62)

Bottom 5 Defense:
McDuffie (26), Barnes (29), Lowry (30), Walker (31), Reed (35)

PFF often loves Lowry, but seemed to notice his horrid run defense against the Eagles. How many times have I watched Walker come up to tackle a ball carrier only to watch him fail to even slow the guy down? Not much change. I guess I thought Barnes (and I've had some rants about Barnes) and McDuffie were better against the run. I suppose things got better. Hurts had 100 rushing yards in the first quarter and 126 in the first half. Hurts rushed 7 times for 31 yards in the second half, but that includes a kneel down for -1 and a 2 yard run on 4th and 2, so that is a successful run. That leaves 5 rushes for 30 yards, or 6 yard per carry. Better, I suppose, but still a healthy average.

Hurts had 5 designed runs in his 17 carries. A couple were QB sneaks, but I didn't see any in the play by play in the second half.
