Packers Sign a Familiar Face in Brett Goode

With hopes to bring a little more order to the field goal operations, the Packers are bringing back Brett Goode to handle their long-snapping duties.

Goode, 32, spent the first nine years of his NFL career in Green Bay after being signed to the Jaguars as an undrafted free agent in 2007. He was subsequently released in August of the same year, signed the following offseason once again before being waived in June.

The Packers signed him in September of 2008 and never looked back; and neither did he.

Goode emerged as the winner of a three-man race in 2008 after J.J. Jansen, the team's initial long-snapper who all but had the job locked up, suffered a season-ending injury at the end of August. For the next nine seasons, the job was Goode's to lose.

That was until he suffered an ACL injury in 2015, ending his season by mid-December. The Packers chose to re-sign Goode on the team's final cutdown day in 2016 and he would go on to resume his long-snapping duties for the duration of the regular season, including the playoffs.

ESPN's Rob Demovsky says the Packers are planning to keep both Goode and current long-snapper Derek Hart on the roster at the moment, however, believes Goode will eventually be the victor of the two.

Hart was signed by the Packers in April after he beat out Taybor Pepper, his only competition. In practice, Family Night and apparently, to the coaches, in the team's first preseason game against the Eagles, Hart may not have done enough to win the job. It's why Goode will likely be returning to the Packers for a 10th campaign.

Goode's signing puts the Packers back at a maximum of 90 players on the active roster after releasing Letroy Guion last Tuesday.

According to the Packers' press release, Goode is going to wear his former No. 61.

Guess what? Goode and Janis go together. Since Goode really can't do anything on punts other than snap, it means they must keep the coverage ace Janis. This in turn means that one of the young receivers won't make it.

Allison's one-game break at the start of the season is a reprieve for someone...and we all know someone's gonna get hurt week 1 and open a roster spot.

I don't worry too much about these guys: the players who deserve a roster spot will get one. I think we might be overvaluing some of these WR.

Talk about awkward; Hart sharing a locker next to Goode. Wonder if Brett will give him tips on how to get the laces to the proper spot.

Anyway, Crosby gets his wish and all it takes is shanking a few during family night. What power.

If we can get Masthay back, we won't miss a kick all year.

Just not the Mashtay.... He was to inconsistent for veteran. I like this kid Vogel!
Hell, Schum was much better than Mashtay!

I for one and really happy Goode is back. He may not be as athletic as Hart or run the field like Hart on a punt but I'll trade that in every singe time for a guy who can:

A) Snap the ball and have the laces facing out.
B) Has snapped the ball in all the elements the Green Bay weather has to offer.
C) Mason Crosby isn't thinking about the snap before each kick.

Probably need him? Why cant the guys we have learn this, there are 5 weeks before the season starts. Seems like were giving up too early plus if he makes the team there is one less guy that will.

There will be only one LS on the team. Let best man win!

Never understood why can't teach someone else to be the long snapper. How about the backup
Center?

Totally. What else does a guy do all week in practice? Snap a damn ball between your legs into a basket about 700 times. Then ride a tread mill for awhile. What's so hard?

Because your backup C is also learning line calls, blocking schemes/protections, watching film on opposing defenses, etc. etc. for each game week after week. He's not going to have time to be the backup anything else--still being a credible player on the two-deep--and still be a first-rate LS. Any further down the list than the two-deep, and the guy is essentially a dedicated LS.

Long ago, NFL teams decided that the dedicated LS is the way to go. This guy needs to be flawless at what he does. It's ALL he does. Maybe some NFL coach at some point will decide to double over a player on the two-deep as an LS, and maybe if it works, other teams will follow suit...until that guy gets killed when he's called on to fill in when a starter gets injured on offense or defense and leaves a team without a snapper.

To be clear, Goode only plays when we punt, or attempt FGs and XPTs. He is not on the punt receiving unit or either Kickoff unit. Goode's snap count matches up perfectly with number of punts, FG and XPT attempts.

It is illegal to have a defender on the LOS across from the LS. In fact, no defender may line up within a yard of the LS. It is now illegal to leap over the LS (and even when you could, you could not touch the LS, even a graze, or it was a penalty). GB supposedly wants a LS that provides better coverage downfield. As a note, there was a long snapper last season with 8 (count 'em - 8) ST tackles. That's good for a gunner.

And no, we can't save a roster spot by having a more versatile LS. As Dobber noted, NFL teams long ago decided the risk of injury from having LS on both kickoff units and on the punt reception team was too high due to the risk of injury. It is too difficult to find a replacement LS who can get into sync with the holder/FG kicker and to a lesser extent with the punter in a weeks time.

The Packers have been trying for 2 seasons to replace him, with no luck. I don't think it's as easy as everyone thinks. If it was, teams would just take failed height /weight /speed TE and Lb's and train them to snap and get faster at the position. As far as other backup lineman go, most play more than 1 position, especially in Gb, and their time is probably already stretched a little thin practicing and sitting in meetings with different groups.

TT let him go like others, to save a buck. Were supposed to be saving money here by playing lesser players and playing cheap ball.
