Packers Should Look At Atogwe (But Won't)

The Packers would do well to consider signing O.J. Atogwe to upgrade the safety position across from Nick Collins. Of course, they won't.

Months ago I wrote the following:

Packer fans remember what a difference Eugene Robinson made to LeRoy Butler when Ron Wolf signed him before the 1996 season. Robinson was an 11 year vet at the time who had been to two Pro Bowls a few years earlier but who many thought was on the downside of his career. Wolf saw an experienced player who could help stabilize the defensive backfield and give defensive coordinator Fritz Shurmer the freedom to use Butler any way he wanted to. Much the same thing could really help Capers and Collins.

Sure it would be nice if the Packers could find an in-the-box type of player to compliment Collins’ ballhawking skills. But really, a solid veteran presence would be a boon to a safety position that has seen a lot of bodies file through it without much quality play.

Yes, the team drafted Morgan Burnett. And I don't doubt he'll be a fine player. Someday.

But for a legit championship contender that had nothing but trouble against the more sophisticated passing attacks it faced even when its nominal starter was in the lineup across from Collins, O.J. Atogwe, who is free agent as of midnight last night, makes a world of sense.

Yes, he's a free safety much like Collins. In Capers' scheme that is less of a concern as the safeties are supposedly interchangeable.

There are no salary cap constraints. Any contract could be easily front loaded, much like the deals given to Clifton and Collins. Atogwe would go a long way to shoring up one of the big problem areas this team had in 2009.

And yes, at the end of the day,  I realize there is probably a better chance of Brett Favre returning to the Packers.

...and it would keep him from or at least drive up the price for the Vikings.

LOL. The way the Queens operate, we'd just have to act like we're interested. They wouldn't let him on a plane to leave Minneapolis.

An experienced Safety would be a nice addition. However, as MM told us in January, "We are looking at building this team with a business strategy." No extra money will be spent. TT has not and quite probably will not spend more to improve the "short term" opportunities. He is definetely looking past the "capless" year.

That would be a dream.

I wouldn't be upset if it didn't happen, as I have faith in Burnett and (yes) Bigby.

But, right now, Atogwe is miles better than both...

The easy comparison to make is Antrel Rolle, drafted in the same year (2005) and signed by the Giants this year for $37m with $15m guaranteed. Is Atogwe worth that much? (Is either of them?) More? Atogwe has many more INTs and forced fumbles.

Hard to say. but after they just sunk a ton of money into Collins, I'd be shocked if they did anything here. But I still think they should...

Getting Atogwe right now really doesn't make a whole lot of sense. We need a player that can contribute right away, Atogwe is coming off a season-ending injury and must be cleared physically before we start talking contract. Secondly, you have to figure out how much the guy wants, and that could be an enormous amount considering how much Collins and Rolle were paid this season. All in all, the process of Atogwe coming to Green Bay would take time off the coaches and GM to fully evaluate this guy. I'd rather use that time to concentrate on how to make the young guys on the roster better so that they themselves can be just as good or if not better than OJ Atogwe.
