Packers Roster Cuts Tracker for the 2021 NFL Season

Ongoing upates on today's Packers roster cuts.

Today is the fateful day that Brian "The Turk" Gutekunst derails the near-term NFL dreams of 27 hopefuls. Culled from a variety of sources, here are the Packers players that have not made the team:

  1. Stephen Denmark, CB, per Matt Schneidman
  2. Dexter WIlliams, RB, per Ryan Wood
  3. Rojesterman Farris, CB, per Bill Huber
  4. Ben Braden, OL, per Bill Huber
  5. Jacob Capra, OL, per Bill Huber
  6. Kurt Benkert, QB, per Paul Bretl
  7. Christian Uphoff, S, per Rob Demovsky
  8. Tipa Galeai, LB, per Ryan Wood
  9. Kabion Ento, CB, per Ryan Wood
  10. Patrick Taylor, RB, per Tom Silverstein
  11. Reggie Begelton, WR, per Tom SIlverstein
  12. Cole Van Lanen, OL, per Matt Schneidman
  13. Innis Gaines, S, per Bill Huber
  14. Equanameous ST. Brown, WR, per Tom Pelissero
  15. JJ Molson, PK, per Ryan Wood
  16. Willington Previlon, DL, per Ryan Wood
  17. Damon Hazelton, WR, per Ryan Wood
  18. Delontae Scott, LB, per Tom Silverstein
  19. Juwaan Winfree, WR per Tom Silverstein
  20. Ray Wilborn, LB, per Ryan Wood
  21. Coy Cronk, OL, per Bill Huber
  22. Carlo Kemp, DL, per Tom Silverstein
  23. Bronson Kaufusi, TE, per Tom Pelissero
  24. Abdullah Anderson, DL, per Ryan Wood
  25. De'Jon Harris, LB, per ...

(JK Scott is assumed to be cut once their new punter (Ray Bojorquez) passes his physical.

PUP:

26.  David Baktiari, OT per Ian Rapoport  The earliest DBak could play would be week 7 versus Washington, but Week 8 against the Cardinals is more likely (2 weeks to practice after coming off PUP).

(As Rob Demovsky pointed out, we all overlooked the fact that DBak would have had to pass his physical to be put on the 53-man roster, so he could then go on IR. That was never really an option, even though we all thought it was.)

RESERVE/SUSPENDED

27.  Jace Sternberger, TE

RESERVE/NON-FOOTBALL INJURY:

TRADES:

Packers aquire P Cory Bojorquez from the Ram and a 2023 7th Round pick for a 2023 6th Round pick.

Check back for more additions to the list as they are made public.

PRACTICE SQUAD: This season, teams can carry 16 players on a practice squad — six more than previous seasons. Six of the 16 slots can be used on players of ANY experience level. Also, teams can protect up to four practice squad players per week who cannot be signed by another team.

  1. QB Kurt Benkert
  2. G Ben Braden
  3. G/T Jacob Capra
  4. G/T Cole Van Lanen
  5. TE Bronson Kaufusi
  6. WR Equanimeous St. Brown
  7. WR Juwann Winfree
  8. WR Chris Blair
  9. RB Patrick Taylor
  10. DL Abdullah Anderson
  11. DL Willington Previlon
  12. LB Tipa Galeai
  13. LB Ray Wilborn
  14. CB Kabion Ento
  15. S Innis Gaines
  16. K JJ Molson
  17.

I would like to take this opportunity to give a big THANK YOU to all of the Packers' beat writers who work tirelessly to bring us the most up-to-date news on our team. Here's a convenient list you can follow to keep up with their news.

It seems as though the first guys they cut are the guys they’d want back for the practice squad.

It’s probably a sound strategy. 32 teams are releasing 25 guys each….that’s like 800 guys…. The odds are, most of the guys you release in that wad will clear waivers because there’s just so many others out there.

I watched Braden especially in the last two games. He needs coaching and experience, but he can absolutely push people out of the way.

WHO? I have to laugh this time of year when I hear names I didnt know existed. They could name the water boy for all I know. The irony is we sit here waiting to hear the names, and many of these guys had zero chance and then we find out not only did they not make the team but nobody else in football land wants them either so we keep them on our practice squad.

"Ok Jones you really sucked in practice and cant read a playbook so your cut and if no one picks you up, we will and give you a contract so you can be on the practice squad, not that you will ever play for us but its comforting knowing your their". Insanity!

This may blow you mind, but check this out:

Most people don't stay glued to the cut wire because they want to know who got cut- and this is the part that gets a little tricky- but when you know who gets cut, you have enough information to figure out who made the team.

People pay close attention to see who made the team, and who's being kept for future development. Heady stuff, i know.

When does Sternberger have to separate from the team to serve his suspension. Can he practice these next two weeks?

Sternberger is placed on RESERVE/SUSPENDED list. They can not cut him (yet?), but can after suspension end. After 2nd season game!

Sorry I missed your Q. No, Jace Sternberger is not allowed to have any activities with the team while there is suspension...

He’s not on the roster as of the cut off deadline. He moves to the reserve/suspended list automatically and does not count on the roster. They can cut him but he would be a separate move to the roster reductions and would be surprising as there is no advantage in doing anything till his suspension is complete after game 2 when they have to reinstate him to the roster or release him. Even if they would have cut him without the suspension, they likely keep the option open till then.

Braden is really quite surprising. It would appear like Kelly will stay. Perhaps they know he was banged up when he did play? I can’t believe that they would rely on Van Lannen at this point as guard depth let alone T. Of course it could mean that Bakh is being activated too and a lot closer to playing than expected.

They would have to activate Bakhtiari today and put him on the 53.

I think cutting Braden likely means Lucas Patrick is safe (from cut or trade). I'm not a van Lanen fan, either, but draft picks often get the benefit of the doubt.

I really thought Denmark will make the team. Lets hope see him on PS.

He also remind me of one old SB commercial. There was camera entering the bar. On the doors you can see that bar is closing at 12:00 pm (0:00 am). After camera enters the bar, there was bartender (washing glasses) and only one man drinkig beer at bar. Clock showing 12:20 am and bartender ask the guest: "Sir, are you finish?" Guest rise his head slowly to bartender and reply: "No, man, I'm Danish!"

Good play with words, because it was commercial for danish beer...

No real surprises although Braden seems to point to Kelly on the 53.

Braden, Benkert, and Uphoff should all make the PS. Williams will probably move on. Wonder why Patrick Taylor wasn't released yet...maybe the Packers keep 4 RBs.

This is a funny one. The Pats cut Cam Newton. People who thought that Benkert will not make our practice squad will now believe that those who think that another team will need him as a backup -will now not have an argument. I never thought that some other team would open a roster spot for a guy who has never taken an NFL snap - but who knows.

There will likely be a couple more veteran QBs cut today, and if the Pats want a backup with starting experience Bortles is still available.

I am surprised about Cam, though - he was on a pretty cheap contract, so you have to wonder if there were character issues or unresolved injury concerns that haven't been reported to this point, because you can do worse for a backup than a former MVP who also has value as a situational runner.

I would not be surprised to see Ento on the PS. Yiadom would be a surprise retention for me, but would suggest proven ST experience Being taken over apparent potential (similar to Burks)?

I think, from my perspective, it comes down to keeping 6 CBs, which it seems make Yiadom the next man up. That sixth CB almost never sees the field, so it could be a matter of ST. It could be they're only going with 5 (Alexander, King, Stokes, Sullivan, Jean-Charles). That would be a little surprising on its own.

Ento was pretty good on STs. Yiadom may be better perhaps but he’s not a CB. Perhaps they think he can be a Redmond or perhaps they will cut both and sign someone else.

At this point both ESB and Winfree haven’t been cut. We still haven’t addressed ILB as far as I know and all the young safeties are still there except Uphoff I think. There are more cuts to come.

I know this isnt all the cuts but you cant be serious that St Brown stays? Sternberger comes back. Neither of these guys contribute to the bottom line so who the heck is really making these calls. Both have size but are not able to get open so whats the point. Rodgers might as well throw the ball out of bounds but he likes the tall receivers so he must have a big say in this?

Sternberger was unlikely to be cut today. No advantage since he’s not on the roster. He may be after game 2. That’s a month away so the team just keeps its options open by ignoring him today.

What do you mean by instructions on how to clear waivers? Genuinely asking as I always imagined the players had nothing to do with it. I just pictured it like each team submits a list of players they want and if no team below them wants them then they just go on that teams 53. But I really don't know.

I too may be wrong here, but IIRC, if a cut player is signed by another team during waivers, then they need to go onto that teams 53 - they can’t sign them to their practice squad.

Yeah, dobs, I think we all see his shortcomings. Speed. Blocking. Like you say, more reps would help the blocking. As reliable as he is, those issues are what send WRs to the PS.

August 31, 2021 at 10:43 am

With Taylor we had 6. If Funchess had stayed there might have been a reason as he can play as a second move TE, but we weren’t going to keep 7 straight receivers given that 2/3 already are return options. Bagelton was likely number 7 or 8 after Winfree if the latter was healthy. Just numbers. He may yet get snaps this year with the PS rules.

So far only Braden is a real surprise to me and Ento somewhat surprising.

A little bit surprised that they are being ultra ultra cautious with Bak - or maybe it is just that his knee injury was a lot worse and his rehab was a lot slower. Dont know why they are so secretive with his status and prognosis. Dont think that it gives anyone any sort of competitive edge knowing or not knowing. But is sure good knowing that we have a capable replacement even though it takes him away from his original starting slot. This Oline had better really work on their synchronization now - because we will soon know now how good they will be. On a side note - it really looks like the Pac will be playing NO in Houston as NO has been flattened by IDA

I’m not surprised at all about being cautious on BAK for multiple of reasons. They just made him the highest LT in the league. Today marked his 8th month anniversary of tearing his ACL. ACL’s normally takes 8-11 months recovery, unless your super human like AP. I’m not so sure it is conservatism, more likely, being smart. Last thing you want is for them to rush back their Franchise LT and he reinsures said knee.

Really don’t see them being secret, more so it is that they just don’t know for sure when he will be ready. It’s also smart to make sure he is at full strength for the stretch run.

I see Geronimo Allison was released by Detroit. I wonder if he's on AR's list of 'we should think of getting this guy back'? I haven't followed him to see how his skills may have deteriorated since leaving GB but he did well here and knew the system. Just don't see a roster spot though...

If Taylor has made the 53, and it seems he has...would you cut him for GMo? And Lazard does everything GMo does and does it better. Being cut from the Lions isn't a ringing endorsement of his remaining skills.

Yiadom was worse than Jackson during his opportunities. He was a QB target whenever on the field. I think he gave up completions on most of his defended passes. Guy has poor instincts and is horrible in zone...no speed to the ball. Slow to adjust which is concerning given his decent straight line speed.

But Ento was judged to be even worse than Yiadom by the Team....maybe a smidgen better for STs. But Yiadom may just be a place holder until CB cuts elsewhere are evaluated as a late addition to the 53.

One thing Gutey has shown, he will continue to build the bottom of the roster long after today.

I would guess the next big question not only for the Pack but for their opponents- Who has been fully vaccinated and who hasnt - and if not are they making the practice squad - apparently Cam wasnt - and maybe that was a consideration. I mean if the rookie is supposed to be in close contact with the starter watching film etc - how can you expect that to be done in a small room even with masks?

This is all about politics and ideology, not health and epidemiology.
I don't know of any professional athletes from last season or this season who have had a major health problem from COVID. The disease doesn't seem to be a significant threat to the young and healthy.
Plus, if the vaccine is so great -- protecting its recipients with invincibility -- what do the vaccinated have to fear from the unvaccinated?
The players association should be sticking up for the liberty of its members and true medical science.
***
I don't understand how willing Americans are to trust in Big Government and Big Pharma to be honest with us about such things as vaccine effectiveness and vaccine side effects. I don't trust their statistics.
I'm not so sure they're putting our welfare ahead of their power and profits.
Once the vaccine goes in, it can't be taken out. It's only been widely used since about January, so there's no way to know the long-term effects of the vaccine.
For most people, if not all people, I don't know if COVID is a greater risk than the vaccine.
As for me, I'll take my chances with COVID rather than taking the vaccine. (It's good to do what we can to build up our immune systems in any case.)
What really matters, though, is giving Americans the right to make their own choices, including football players.
Again, if people get the vaccine and think it's so effective, then why would they care what others do?
***
I don't claim to be an expert, and am glad for other opinions that are reasonable and respectful.
By the way, if Cam Newton has the courage to stand by his convictions, then that speaks well for him as a leader.
Our own quarterback was willing to threaten the entire season of the Packers with a holdout for apparently no good reason, just his own personal absorption. That speaks poorly for him as a leader.

The COVID death toll in this country alone is over 650,000. What is the vaccine death toll? Last I saw, it is 3. There is a figure of 6,200 out there, but that is the number of people who died OF ANY CAUSE shortly after being vaccinated. And if you don't believe the numbers, how do you explain the numerous reports from legitimate sources of hospitals being flooded with COVID patients and the lack of reports of hospitals being flooded with patients suffering and dying from the vaccines?

Don't believe everything you read in the newspapers, right?
The death toll from COVID may also be inflated by including people who actually died from diseases such as terminal cancer but also had COVID.
Also, what is the death toll to healthy people who are not obese -- such as pro athletes?
It's possible hospitals are overwhelmed in part because of firing nurses who refused to take the vaccines.
It seems the federal government has a terrible method of tracking problems with vaccines in that it is only voluntary.
With what's going on in America in general these days, do you really trust the government to tell the truth, including giving us accurate numbers? How trusting are you of Big Pharma?
If you have gotten this vaccine, GregC, don't you feel safe regardless of whether others get it?
A couple of resources for consideration are America's Frontline Doctors (with Dr. Simone Gold), and Alex Berenson.
All the best to you, GregC, and to all the people here at CHTV, including good health.
Thanks for a comment of reason and respect, even if we more or less differ.

You sound like a scientist who has reviewed all the literature and come to a conclusion.

As an ER doc, I can assure you that your vaccine concerns are overblown.

I have seen exactly zero patients with a vaccine problem.

Trump had the vaccine, go get it.

I've seen almost no one vaccinated who was admitted with Covid since 7/4 when the Delta hit WI hard, and 1/3 of my patients (mostly middle aged) have been unvaccinated scientists, such as yourself.

Trust those way smarter than you. They took less money to work at the CDC because the love science and people so much. Did you get polio or smallpox? No, because of them.

I truly trust Gutes decision making even though all of us have our opinions on players including me. No doubt there are a few players he desperately wants back on PS, but you can't keep all. There are also so many factors that go into these decisions that are all so intertwined. Whether injuries at a particular position, ST's, depth at a position, potential vs play ready veteran, age, etc.

Presently, I am a little caught off guard with the Ben Braden decision since Cole Van Lanen was cut as well, and Bakhtiari is on PUP. I am not high on Kelly, and to be honest Yosh Nijman scares me. Don't think he is ready for quality speed rushers.

Of interest is for a 2nd year guy in the league Braden is 27 years old. The guy currently sliding under the radar is the 23 year old Coy Cronk. Will he make the cut?

Personally, I am high on both Patrick Taylor and Christian Uphoff and hope we bring them both back.

G&G....those who opine Nijman isn't worthy to be on the 53, did not watch his 3 game body of work. He has made a HUGE step up and is showing he is an NFL T now. 2 missed plays still made him one of PFFs highest rated OL in the preseason.

He showed me so much more than Kelly who is on the 53 based on size and starting experience. But I think Nijman is the upside Swing T now and expect Stenavich and Matt do too.

I tend to give Gute the benefit of the doubt, too, with the impression that he has a good working relationship with Matt LaFleur in choosing the best roster.
I'd like to see Dexter Williams and Patrick Taylor on the practice squad, and Reggie Begelton, but am confident about Gute and LaFleur making the right selections.
I still think it's good for fans to weigh in, as long as we realize our disadvantage in evaluation in terms of not being around the players nearly as much.
We have been watching Packers teams being assembled for many a season, though, and our opinions are worthwhile. Sometimes people who are farther away can offer a valuable perspective to help the people who are in the thick of things.

I think 10 more cuts to go then Gutey turns to the waiver wire and and building the PS.

Right now I can see 11 or 12 player cuts to choose from. 10 OL remain and I do not think they keep them all. Cronk and Hanson seemed lower on the depth chart than Van Lanen or Braden. Who knows how this ends up.

DL and OLB have several cuts I can see. CB and S may already be set...but could see some churn there with other waivers around the league. ILB has two likely cuts coming too unless they staff the room with 5 or even 6 for STs. Seems I can see 5 with McDuffie on the 53. Wilburn would be a tough cut. Guy is all over the field.

Solid team with good depth emerging.

It's halftime of this process of setting the roster.
The second half is finding out who we keep on the practice squad, and whether we claim players let go by other teams.
Does that seem about right?
When are the practice squads chosen?
***
As I understand it, if another team picks up one of our players who was cut, it has to put them on their roster of 53. In other words, it can't put any of these cut players on its practice squad.
So a team really has to really want one of our cut players quite a bit to sign him.
In the same sense, the Packers have to really want one of the players cut by other teams to put him on our roster of 53.
***
One fun activity for fans could be picking players cut from other teams who would be worthwhile for the Packers to sign to our 53. Then, who would you cut on the current roster to make room for the new guy?

Rams have Hekker who has just renegotiated his contract, the trade allowed us to avoid the waiver wire. We still have a bit of practice time, but would have been nice to have him on board earlier. JK Scott has talent, but his inconsistency after this many years is too much of a risk. Good luck to JK, hopefully he finds another team to give him a shot.

This was new in 2020 where you can protect 4 players. https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/nfl/nfl-practice-squad-rules-2020-every...

Good news about the trade trade for the punter.

I'm hoping the Packers sign the following cuts to our PS:

Benkert
Braden
Uphoff
Galeai
Ento
Taylor
Begelton
Gaines
Previlon
Winfree
Wilborn
Kaufusi
Cronk
Kemp
Van Lanen
D. Scott

We'll see if I'm close at all by tomorrow. Thanks, Since '61

I'd ditch Ento and put Stephen Denmark on the PS. Ento cannot tackle and Denmark can.

For you Badgers fans out there (and this may be old news as the cuts aren't dated):
NYG cut Corey Clement
NE cut Troy Fumagalli (injured)
ATL cut Olive Sagapolu

In other news,
Richard Rodgers got cut by Philadelphia, as did Kerryon Johnson.
The Lions released 8 WRs (how many did they have in camp?) including Breshad Perriman.
The Falcons cut Trevor Davis and J'Mon Moore (which IIRC we already knew about)
Tampa Bay cut Raven Greene (a possible replacement for Yiadom?)

I am surprised that Yiadom made the 53 man, though I don't think he is on for week #1. Gute will bring someone in from the waiver wire, as he was very poor in his short preseason action.

I like Raven, I think he is better than Yiadom when healthy....unfortunately he just can't seem to take the punishment and remain on the roster.

Am I the only one who's surprised that Jake Hanson made the roster? I didn't see that coming, especially after he submarined his first snap in the final preseason game.

I am somewhat...yet for the first 6 games having Hanson joining Myers, Newman, Patrick, and Runyan, all good run blockers too, seems to make sense as Rodgers learns to trust the big guys.

When Bahktiari comes back maybe Hanson goes, maybe he shows why he stays.
