Packers Question of the Day: Roster Surprises

It's the return of my daily "Question of the Day" series, now you're all back to interacting with me on a daily basis. Lucky you.
I want to start off by hoping you all had a safe and happy Labor Day weekend. We're officially five days from the Packers' season opener against Seattle.
In preparation for that week one matchup, the Packers released their 53-man roster leading into the week of the game. What were your biggest surprises?
It could be the Packers keeping seven cornerbacks, not keeping neither DeAngelo Yancey or Malachi Dupre on the practice squad or whatever you truly feel stood out to you and completely ruined your prediction.

If Patrick clears the concussion protocol and they feel good about him snapping the football, I think McCray gets cut to make room for Allison. I don't see why they would keep them both for any length of time unless they really feel they have something in them.

5 WRs for one week, given the additions at TE, and knowing that most likely 1 or 2 of the drafted guys will make it to PS, makes sense to me.

Very similar to how I felt, JS. At first, I was surprised with 10 guys, but as the week progressed, it made sense when one considers the injury issues. My most surprising move though was the 4 tailbacks (I still will call them this)...frankly still have some angst regarding this move.
Player-wise I was surprised Reggie Gilbert was not added to the roster, but now we know why. For those who were criticizing Jayrone Elliott, please recognize the Cowboys traded for him and his bad back when they could have hit the waiver wires, and had the likes of Gilbert and host of others whom were cut. Jayrone was an exceptional person and I wish him the best.

Presuming when Allison comes back, Pipkins will move to practice squad unless an injury in Seattle game trumps such a move.
Goodsen and Biegel returns will cause additional consternation but probably not for a few weeks.

You have to wonder who is essentially on the bubble currently, in case they sign someone else. Remember the Cowboys were scouting the Packer players and are CB needy (along with several other teams). Packers are obviously protecting him, so not sure if it is Pipkens, an Olineman, RB, or a WR cut. Hopefully, no injuries make this possible.

Why keep Janis over Hill? Imo, Hill is way more valuable on this roster no matter which way you look at it. While Jeff Janis is the complete opposite.

Because Janis is an excellent gunner, a good kick returner, and a serviceable 4th or 5th wide receiver who can stretch the field with his speed
Hill, on the other hand, will sit on the bench all year and won't even see the field unless both Rodgers and Hundley get hurt

I find it hard to imagine Hill not being more valuable than the 53 ranked player on the roster.
From what I've watched so far, I think Hill has all the tools necessary to be a solid number 2 quarterback (or perhaps starter in this league).

Aaaaaah, reading the last year comments regarding Joe Callahan. To remind you - cut Brett Hundley or trade him immediately, Joe is keeper, Joer is wonderful. Well he was with Saints and with Browns and he was back...
Now "we" think Hill is "last preseason Joe"... Oh, oh...

I didn't really have any big surprises. I would say the biggest surprise was keeping pipkins, but I imagine he will be gone once Allison returns, depending on week one injuries of course. The next biggest surprise was 4 RBs.
As far as Hill goes, I don't think he was worth a roster spot. Practice squad, sure. He had good arm strength, but appeared to be a run first QB that was injury prone in college. I viewed him as a poor man's RGIII or Kapernick. You need a specific scheme to use him for the most part. He is a project and 27 yo already.

Sheesh! So much for improving the pass rush and finding a veteran back-up for the O-line. Not complaining....very much appreciate the want of TT and Co. to improve the team where they see an opportunity.

This roster shaping is starting to look wacky AF.
Upgrade? Yes. But, wow, what a roller coaster.
Side Note, Brian Price better suck in Dallas and Dial better be a beast!

Dial is a better player than either Ringo or Price. He was a good get.

He's a free player on PUP for 6 weeks.... there's no reason to cut him.... why can't you understand the basics?

Carrying him on the PUP costs money, $715,788 in his case. (Assumes he doesn't have a split contract; I could prove he doesn't have a split contract despite not knowing the basics if you want). He was a marginal player who sustained a serious knee injury. What is he likely to look like after the injury? At least he doesn't take up a roster spot. He just costs cap money.

At a bare minimum depending on the scope of the surgery, it takes two years to recover all functions of the knee. Even then it's a crap shoot, knowing if you will recover the full range you had before the injury. Goodson's injury was by any measure, horrible. I glad the packers are giving him every chance to recover, and lead a normal life.

flackcatcher, I think you've nailed it. The Packers are very good about taking care of injured players and helping them get on with their lives past football. As someone who has had eight knee surgeries on the same knee I can concur that a bad injury typically takes a long time to heal -and I've always been a fast healer. Maybe Goodson will eventually be able to come back and play, maybe not, but this way he has some money to live on.

We all forget that TT is a value shopper. If he finds value, he usually goes and get it. With the mass cut there are more than a few diamonds that fit the packers current needs. Go and read thegreatreynoldo's comments on the salary cap. tgr lays out the relationship between the roster makeup and the cap structure and how successful teams like the packers manage the two. Since 2014, the packers have been moving toward a new england type roster management style. That is only possible if you have deep cap space. Only surprise for me was the signing of Lane Taylor. I thought it would happen after this season, not before.

Well, for me surprise was 2 moves: keepeing all 3 rookie RB - for what I understand as every of them brings something special and, lets be honest, Jones and Mays surpased Williams at this moment by their plays. As we do not know what was asked from them to do, I'm OK with depth chart made by Packers.
Second move was claiming Odom. I did not expect from Packers to bring young DE/OLB on the roster, but I'm glad they did! I think Gilbert will replace FAckrell if he will continue to be flat as he was in preseason!
