Packers 2024 NFL Draft Day 2 Targets

With 4 picks going into Day 2, Brian Gutekunst must feel like a Kid in a Candy Store

The 1st Round of the 2024 NFL Draft is in the books, and for almost the entirety of the Draft, Packers fan were saying, "We've got them right where we want them." Unfortunately, or more like as predicted, instead of making the "smart decision" to draft a Cooper DeJean, Kool-Aid McKinstry, Graham Barton or Jer'Zhan Newton amongst other favored picks, the Packers took a swing tackle in Jordan Morgan out of Arizona. And like some of you, I just can't get enough of watching the Packers World burn to the ground in protest. But, whether you like it or not, Jordan Morgan is now a Packer, and he fits a need of upgrading and/or adding competition to the offensive line. Lotta ballgame left though, because Rounds 2 & 3 are up next Friday night.

The Packers are going into Friday night with four selections - tied for 2nd-Most in the league. With the Jordan Morgan pick locked in, I'm sure many a fan is wondering if Gutekunst will look to add any more players to the mix on the offensive line. And of course, there's the millions upon millions of cries to add a Safety, and they likely won't stop til Iowa's Cooper DeJean's services have likely been secured elsewhere around the league. Moving to a 4-3 system under new Defensive Coordinator Jeff Hafley will also warrant some reinforcements at the Linebacker position, with all but Quay Walker's spot up for grabs. Keisean Nixon is returning with a new $6M contract (and it won't be just to return kicks), but I wouldn't mind a CB being brought in to challenge him and Eric Stokes for more time. While I don't necessarily agree with the analysis, some think the Packers may be looking to add to the Defensive Tackle room as well, but it seems like more of a luxury given the other needs on the team. And while I do think the Wide Receiver room is just fine as is, there have been whispers of adding a vertical threat to the group, which I would consider the ultimate luxury at this point.

Like many of you, I thought 25th might be up for sale when the likes of Amarius Mims, Quinyon Mitchell, and Terrion Arnold went off the board. But since the Packers stood pat and took Morgan, 4 picks are likely all we'll see tonight. However never say never, as Gutekunst expressed he will be picking up the phone to hear teams out; although I suspect at this stage of the game, compensation coming back will likely include Day 3 or 2025 picks. I've sifted through my board, which is very, very much intact, and came away with a few names that I'd love to see in Lambeau in 2024.

Kool-Aid McKinstry, CB - Alabama

I have McKinstry as my CB3 in this year's class. What's great about Kool-Aid is he's just as physical in the run game as he is in coverage, he also has the flexibility to play in the slot. I love his willingness to fight for the ball through the catchpoint. Should he fall to the Packers in the 2nd Round, it gives me Eddie Lacy vibes all over again, and we can hail Gutekunst as the genius he is.

Kingsley Suamataia, OT - BYU

Suamataia might be the best mover left on the board at his position. He has the ideal size and length for the position and for the most part, is technically sound. I have some minor concerns given the level of competition he faced at BYU, but I do believe he's more than capable as an OT at the NFL level.

Adonai Mithcell, WR - Texas

There are rumblings of the Packers desiring a vertical weapon to add to their list of weapons, and Mitchell certainly fits the bill. Mitchell ran a 4.34 forty with a 2.5 twenty and 1.48 ten. You know who posted very similar testing numbers? Christian Watson. Whereas I would prefer Watson as the "X" Receiver, Mitchell profiles as a "Z". What I love most about Mitchell is he can win with more than just speed; he excels at selling the route, stacking his man, and has the IQ to break off his stem to find the hole in zone coverage. Let's not forget the Packers' well-documented success in the 2nd Round with drafting WRs either.

Max Melton, CB - Rutgers

The younger brother of Packers WR Bo Melton is CB4 in this year's class, he's just as fast as he is physical, and he was baptized by fire in the BigTen. I have no qualms about Melton starting Day 1 on the outside for the Packers. He brings the "edginess" that I hope Coach Haf can reinsert back into the secondary(and the defense overall); which will be a welcome addition with the NFC North loading up on offense Thursday night.

Kiran Amegadjie, OT - Yale

Kiran may be a little on the raw side, but his play inspires you that he can be a future All-Pro down the line. He received an invite to the Senior Bowl but was unable to compete due to injury; but once fully recovered, the future seems bright for this former Ivy League star.

Cooper DeJean, SS - Iowa

I'm only putting DeJean in here so you guys can get your panties out of a bunch. But in all seriousness, the league has trended towards the Safety position not being a priority in the 1st Round, so no surprise he's still available. However, I do think DeJean is this year's SS1, and Gutekunst said when asked about DeJean that he would "play him where he needed him"; that position is Strong Safety. I like DeJean's ball skills and think he's best when he has his eyes to the QB so he can break on routes. He has a blue-collar mentality, which should be a plus for the run game. What's a SS's value in the 2nd Round when other premium positions are also available? I guess we'll soon find out.

Renardo Green, CB - Florida State

Green has my CB5 ranking this year, and he may even be more physical than CB3 McKinstry before him. That physicality could get him in trouble though, as NFL refs will be throwing the flag if he continues to be too grabby down the field. Green is flexible at both Boundary Cornerback and Nickel, and you know what...I think he's got some Safety in him too.

Chris Braswell, OLB - Alabama

There's so much focus on the Linebacker position that fans are forgetting there's another Outside Linebacker position to be filled too, and that group is far more shallow than the inside guys. Braswell is better against the run than pass right now but his incredible strength will give many an Offensive Tackle anxiety. If he can develop his hands and pass rush plan I see him as an impressive "Sam" Linebacker who seals the edge and forces the QB to make a decision when he collapses the pocket.

Edgerrin Cooper, LB - Texas A&M

Considered the LB1 in this year's class, "Edge" is built to thrive in the middle of the defense. He crashes down with a controlled level of chaos and has the chops to cover RBs and TEs in the open field. He's a little on the lighter side for what would be considered the prototypical 4-3 MLB, but his athleticism is in line with what the modern-day LB should be. Considered even better than Quay Walker when he came out of Georgia, Edgerrin Cooper should be a Day 1 starter in Hafley's defense.

Ruke Orhoroho, DT - Clemson

An absolute freak at the Defensive Tackle position, I don't know what Ruke can't do on the defensive line. Ruke needs some real coaching to fully unlock his potential as he's been winning purely off athleticism, which won't cut it in the NFL. If Coach Haf & Co. can coach him up, he's a lock for being a future All-Pro.

Kris Jenkins Jr., DT - Michigan

The son of a former All-Pro, Jenkins plays similar to his dad, but isn't quite his dad when it comes to rushing the passer. Probably the class' strongest athlete, Jenkins will be an immediate disrupter in the run game. As a card-carrying member of the "Get Kenny Some Help" Club, Jenkins is a guy who can contribute right away in the rotation on 1st and 2nd downs. With additional development, he's a "never leave the field" type of player.

Christian Haynes, OG - Connecticut

Troy Fautanu be damned, UConn's Haynes is my OG1 in this year's class. He dominated all comers at the Senior Bowl, making the edge rushers look like kids trying to go through a brick wall. He's Day 1 ready for the NFL and would instantly transform the Packers' offensive line interior.

Jarrian Jones, CB - Florida State

If I had to say there was a Nickel1, it would be Jones. Despite less-than-ideal arm length, the Packers did bring him in for a visit. His production this past year was incredible. And while I do see him as Nickel only, he could be a future star manning the slot.

Cam Hart, CB - Notre Dame

At 6'3, Hart is likely to be on many teams' list on Day 2. He possesses better-than-good man-coverage skills and is more than adequate against the run. I've heard rumors of some teams wanting to try him at either Safety position too given the underwhelming class at the position. If the Packers are interested, they probably need to move sooner rather than later.

Jermaine Burton, WR - Alabama

Burton, the vertical threat in Bama's aerial attack, was brought in by the Packers for a visit. I think it was likely to see if he had learned from his maturity/character concerns in Tuscaloosa. If there are no perceived issues there, the speed and the skills are readily apparent from the tape; with some additional muscle and work on his release against press-man, Burton is a future weapon at X, Z, or in the slot. Depending on how teams view his growth in that area, he could be the low-hanging fruit for the Packers on the back end of Day 2.

Jackson Powers-Johnson, OC - Oregon

Since Graham Barton went first, Powers-Johnson is OC2 for 2024. Powers-Johnson, possibly considered the most outstanding lineman at the Senior Bowl was just a bully up front. He's not a total paperweight either, that frame has some agility to boot. I think he's probably too large for the Packers' thresholds and is probably gone too early, but if he were to slide a little too much, maybe Gutekunst might bite.

Jonathan Brooks, RB - Texas

Given the Packers' latest trend to take guys with some injury woes, it's not hard to project the Longhorns' Brooks to the Packers late on Day 2. Had he been healthy, Texas might have claimed another National Championship. Brooks has a hard running style that may not be long for the NFL, but I can't think of a better mentor than Josh Jacobs to mentor him on how to be successful in the NFL. If he can unlock more elusiveness to his game, which I do believe is there on the tape, this is a bell-cow back in the making for the Green and Gold.

Trey Benson, RB - Florida State

Possibly this year's RB1 in a weak class. Benson's patience and ability to turn a wrinkle of grass into chunk gains is a welcome addition to any offense. While there is a desire for him to put on more weight and get better in pass-pro, Benson profiles immediately as a change of pace back who can provide immediate value in the passing game. With new RB Josh Jacobs in the fold for only a two-year contract, Benson provides a potential long-term solution at the position that could develop into a mainstay for years to come.

Christian Mahogany, OG - Boston College

One of the 2024 Joseph's Gems, Mahogany played for new DC Jeff Hafley in a power gap scheme, but his movement skills show he can be more than good in a zone scheme as well. Mahogany looks to finish you every play, it's the nastiness that I think this offensive line group desperately needs up front when it's time to move the pile.

Mason McCormick, OG - South Dakota State

The most athletic Guard in the class with a 9.96 RAS, I have to believe that Gutekunst is in on McCormick. As one scout put it, "He plays like an a**hole." What's not to like about that? Should Jordan Morgan pan out at LT, McCormick is an instant contributor at the RG spot. I have concerns about his functional strength, to go along with his footwork and punch. But if he can answer those questions in the preseason, Sean Rhyan will have no choice but to concede the starting role. Coming out of the small NFL Factory that SDSU has become recently, he should be a surefire fan favorite next to his former teammate Tucker Kraft.

Jaylen Wright, RB - Tennessee

The Volunteers' Wright blew the testing out of the water but the tape is questionable. He has blazing-fast speed, but his vision is lacking and he gets brought down way too easily. He's a project that could come along later down the line, which is hopefully towards the end of Josh Jacobs' contract. Immediately, though he profiles as a change of pace back who can give Jacobs and A.J. Dillon a spell and compete with Emmanuel Wilson for additional snaps down the road.

21 players, 4 picks (for now). Could the next four Packers come from this list? Or maybe none of these players become Packers...which do you think is more likely? Day 2 of the 2024 NFL Draft begins at 6 pm Central, 7 pm Eastern. I'll see you all right back here on Saturday for the Day 3 Targets.

Two DBs and a LB in the next four picks is the way to go if you want to restock this defense properly. I don't know whether or not DeJean will fall into the mix, but it's worth noting that Brian Branch fell to the middle of the second round last year and he turned out to be a pretty good player. Cooper seems so similar to Quay, so I'm hoping by some miracle they'll find Colson more attractive instead. And I would really be excited if they took Kris Jenkins, being a long-standing member of the aforementioned club; run defense is never going to improve unless you set your mind out to do it. If we're looking for more OL help, JP-J would fit nicely.

'''Two DBs...."

I think it'll be one S, and we'll get another one in FA. Absolutely a LB, plus another one somewhere.

On the Oline, we dress 9. Usually, that's 4 OTs and 5 IOL. If I leave Morgan out of the picture, temporarily, then our 4 OTs are Tom, Walker, Dillard, and Jones. Our interior 5 would be Jenkins,Myers, Rhyan, Newman, and ????

Which of our defensive tackles would you bench in order to make room for Jenkins? We have Clark, Wyatt, Slaton, Wooden at tackle. We would dress 3 of those.

Timing is everything, and this is just not the right time to add a premium tackle to an already pretty solid group.

Yeah, I'll admit there's a problem finding room for another DT; and then there's Brooks to add to your list.

Jenkins is a better DT than Slaton right now, especially for a 4-3 team. They could maybe trade Slaton to a 3-4 team and recoup a 5th rounder.

NFL Network is reporting the Packers are looking to move up from 41. My guess would be DeJean or McKinstry but there have been rumors they really like Edge Cooper, though it doesn't make sense with Walker already there unless they think he can handle playing the MLB and Cooper plays Will.

Or maybe they desire someone like LBJ, Nubin or Newton, or even someone like Sua. Lot's of options as there are a lot of good players still available. We will see what happens but by now you just know it is Gutey's nature to take at least one swing in a draft where he makes a trade. I have been expecting Gutey 'all along' to want to trade up early in round 2. If he does I just hope it is for a highly-rated impact player and not just a player at a need position.

It looks like we could have our choice of LBs at #41. Edgerrin Cooper, Junior Colson, and Cedric Gray all look to be available at #41. No matter how many different ways I've run the Math, we can't play the 4-3 with only 2 LBs. We need a guy who can come in and play quite a few snaps right away. If you want to dress 5 LBs, we need to add some guys worthy of dressing out.

If it were me,and I could make things work out the way I wanted to, I'd move Jenkins to Center and start Morgan at LG. That gives me one interior backup, Myers. Then I'd draft another OT at #58 to be the
left tackle backup, . Somebody like Sua or Amegadjie . Caleb Jones would be our 4th OT.

We'd need one more interior guy. Right now, that guy is Newman. I'm 100% certain we can get a better player with more upside to replace him. Beaux Limmer, maybe?

Limmer is a Center, and should be without a doubt a Day 3 pick. I don't think that's a direction they'd like to go. But I could be wrong.

You know we've had a lot of discussion about Limmer here. I had never heard of the guy a couple of months ago. He's a Day 3 pick, just like Bakhtiari, TJ Lang, Josh Sitton, Zach Tom.... all of whom were above average players for us.

You want to have 4 OTs active for the game, and you want to have 5 IOLs available.

Right now, I believe our Center, Myers, is entering the final year of his contract. I don't know how much his rookie year injury cost him, but he isn't really distinguishing himself out there and I think it's unlikely he'll be retained.

Even if we move Jenkins to Center, and Myers to the bench, we would still need another interior backup. That's where I like Limmer. He's SEC All-Academic every year. He moved to Center this year, after having played guard prior to that. I think he could be acquired on Day 3, make the active squad as a backup IOL, and develop to the point where we might have a choice when it comes to paying Jenkins $25M in 2006.

We could draft 3 OL this year that would get to practice together for four years, which is when Love will be at his peak.

Our starters, In My World, would be Walker and Tom at the tackles, backed up by Amegadjie and Jones. Our interior starters would be Morgan, Jenkins, Rhyan, with Myers and Limmer at backup. I definitely can see Beaux Limmer as a guy we could take tomorrow who could help this offensive line this year, and in the future.

RB is a plug n play low value position now.

Run Jacobs into the ground and then draft one and plug him in.

We do not need a RB this season, there are already 3 guys that need carries.

There is room on the PS for a UDFA or 2 at RB just incase injuries pile up.

No need to get a stud and sit him.

The draft fell perfectly to us last night but we failed to take advantage of it. Own it and move on. We now NEED to address ILB at 41 Cooper or Wilson) and defensive back (either safety or CB) at 58 Bullard. Whoever gives most value. In the third round at 88 consider trading up a tad if needed to get the most explosive and fastest RB on the board. Someone who is a threat to score a TD every time he touches the ball. This is really important. We need a compliment to the two power backs we have now. Someone who will not only challenge Dillon, but Jacobs as well. Hint: Benson. Wright. If not, why bother at all. Just pray Jacobs stays healthy the entire season. Good luck. Hopefully tonight, there will be no more shock and awe picks. In fairness I was okay with them taking an OL early. But ..... a controversial call to say the least. Hopefully it will work out for the best. I am an eternal optimist.

Food for thought....

Gute said he COULD have traded back, but didn't feel Morgan would be there if he did.

Barton went 26th, and Guyton went 29th.

The Ravens probably SHOULD have gone OL, but probably didn't have anyone on their board rated high enough to take at 30th.

Let me know if my logic checks out.

Here’s the type of thing that would make me happy today if we stand pat:

41. McKinstry CB or Brooks/Benson RB
58. Nubin SS or Wilson ILB or Brooks/Benson RB
88. Gray SS or Melton CB
92. Colson ILB, Heart CB or Orhorhoro DL

I think JPJ, OC and Frazier, OC are gone unfortunately, along with Suamataia T/G.

If I were to trade up, it would be for one of those 3, but I like our picks in rounds 4 and 5 to round off help in areas of need, S, ILB, OL and even CB too much to trade them lightly. A trade up likely costs our 4th rounder or more.

Dejean won't be there at 41 and still isn't worth giving up more picks to go get... there's too much depth that needs to be filled on the OL and S spots. Sit tight at 41 and take Melton, then probably Colson at 58... Hicks is the 3rd would be outstanding along with Wright for a change of pace back. Day 3 were gonna need another safety, LB and OL depth guys. Maybe when enegbare comes back he can slide back to LB also... as it sits now gary,Preston, lvn and brooks look like the edge guys. Wooden might be more of an edge guy too so that leaves clark, wyatt and Slayton to rotate in the middle.

I have to get in your mindset that you enjoy watching fans freak out and hate on the Packers over a dang OT in the first round. It drives me nuts. What is wrong with me? They wanted Gutey fired for picking Love and that look like a pretty decent pick, as have been the last couple of drafts overall. I hope that keeps up, whomever they get in the middle rounds. I do love that the guys that were mocked to GB didn't even get picked in the first round. At least the one(s) fans are most upset about. I'm just happy to be excited about the season, with a starter cemented at the most important position in football, a good (just got better) offensive line, a potent RB room, productive and exciting WRs and a new DC to get the most out of any of the picks on that side of the ball.

I really enjoy reading Joseph's articles. Well done, young man. In depth analysis that gets right to the point.

There are some really good IOL prospects and if Gute doesn't get DeJean with 2A (he may need a sweetener if he's his guy), go for one of the maulers at G.

I admit DeJean is who I want selected next, but dang....just visualizing an OL of Morgan, Jenks, Tom, King Sua/Chris Haynes, Walker/King Sua with sturdy competition at RG and RT from Rhyan, Caleb the Giant, Tenuta.

Packers paid a lot of money to Josh Jacobs and are going to invest gobs more to keep Love healthy and the rising star we all believe he can be.

I like the Hawkeye...but an excellent OL for the weapons the Pack has on offense is wisdom.

Similar visions. I visualize Walker-Morgan-Jenkins-Rhyan-Tom as the starting lineup, with Sua and Caleb Jones as the backup tackles, and Myers and Beaux Limmer as our backups inside.

I also agree with the bit about getting Jacobs blocking, and protecting Love. It should be priority #1, because any hope we have of going to the Super Bowl depends on him staying healthy and upright.

Totally agree with Joseph on Orhorhoro and would add he's a plus run defender NOW. It might not be an ideal fit but he could backup Clark over Slaton, be as good against the run and be a much better pass rusher. He would steal less talented guards lunch money. Did 29 reps on the bench with 34" arms, 80th percentile. Just a naturally strong kid that could turn into a monster with NFL training. Fiske did 26 with 31" arms for comparison. At 6'-4" he has the ability to add some weight as he gets older. Chris Jones potential. Has the ability to go QB hunting and finish the play.

A side reason I want the Packers to draft him is to hear Bryan Bulaga pronounce Ruke Orhorhoro.

Joseph, I like your list. I'd add the possibility of OG Brandon Coleman sneaking into the 3rd. I think he could be on the short list of prospects the Packer would go for.

We have 4 picks, would like to see Gute draft the middle of the defense, ILB, SS, IDL if the right players are there. I would not be opposed to IOL either. But we could snag IOL in the later rounds as well. Zak Zinter from Michigan would be a good choice for RG I think.

I keep hearing how the NFC North pretty much smoked GB in last night's 1st round. Maybe...maybe not.

Last I checked, the draft has 7 rounds.

Tonight, in rounds 2 and 3, where a lot of folks think drafts are defined, consider the following:

GB has FOUR selections.
Chi has ONE.
Det has ONE
Minny has ZERO.

Let's revisit that argument later tonight.

Welcome to GB Jordan Morgan. Keep building that OLine. I think we have a unique opportunity to build a great one for years to come with 5 picks in the top 100. One more Oline pick amongst the next 4 should go a long way to achieving that.

Hey, 13!

The NFC North rivals on paper sure did seem to have great drafts last night but rarely does one round make a draft. Ten more picks and I am a huge fan of Gutey and things are going to undoubtedly be looking pretty good after tonight.

Thanks for pointing out the lack of picks for our NFC North rivals tonight. I needed to hear that!

Interesting item regarding the Packer Official website. Their Depth chart might be a bit conspicuous. Probably not updated for a couple or a few. As in Josh Jacobs and Xavier Mckinney. Does it foretell anything? Would they know anything more than others? Maybe, maybe not.

They have open spots here:
Offense:
1st team RG - no entry (Rhyan listed as 2nd team)
2nd team Center and LT - no entry
1st team RB - no entry (assuming Josh Jacobs) - He's on their roster, but not given the spot yet.

Defense:
1st team ILB - no entry (McDuffie listed as 2nd team)
1st team Safety - (assuming Xavier Mckinney) - He's on their roster, but not given the spot yet.
1st team Safety - no entry

So, what to deduce?
They got Jordan Morgan to most likely fill one of those open spots (RG or LT) . Likely two more OL on the way?
ILB is a priority.
Safety is a priority.

LB Edgerrin Cooper?
S Cooper DeJean?

From what I've looked at, none of the teams picking before the Packers #41 need a DB or LB as top needs. Could the Packers just stand pat and get both? Of course, the worry is a team trading up. Unless Gute is Alfred E. Neuman.

Joseph, you obviously don’t like the Jordan Morgan pick. I’ll admit I was surprised and luke warm about it last night. However, after reading Justis Mosqueda summary today, I’m fine with it. The Packers apparently thought Morgan was a better tackle prospect than Barton. Barton might be better inside than Morgan, but the potential of Morgan at tackle was the appeal. If the Packers had waited until day 2 for OL, there would only be 2 available (One is Paul at Houston) before a significant drop off in talent. Could have easily been shut out on a tackle if they had waited.

This really is a bad draft by Gute.
When the draft is in GB next year.
I hope they BOO every packer pick.
We need a New GM.
This wasn't rebuilding .
This was sabotage.
And the whole NFL is laughing at us tonight.
