Packers 2022 NFL Draft: Day 3 Targets

The Packers made some big picks in the first half of the draft, buffing the defense, making a big move for a receiver, and getting another offensive lineman... but there's a lot of draft left. With six picks left, here are some top prospects for the Packers to target.

Day 1 of the draft brought us a pair of prime defenders.

Day 2 of the draft bought the much-anticipated receiver and a new offensive lineman.

Now we get to look ahead to Day 3, where some big hits can really boost a franchise.

Brian Gutekunst doesn't have a great track record in the later rounds, but hope springs eternal every year in the draft.

With plenty of room for improvement on the Packers roster, here are the players I'd most like to see the team pick up today:

Charlie Kolar (Tight End) A big target at 6'6, 250, Kolar's 4.62 speed makes him a great seam weapon. He has strong hands and catches well in crowds and traffic (as you can see in the picture). He would make a nice receiving option in a LaFleur offense that loves big targets.

Jalen Wydermyer (Tight End) A playmaking receiving tight end, the 6'4, 255 Wydermyer has a big catch radius and great hands, but his terrible Combine results have dropped him to Day 3.

Justyn Ross (Wide Receiver) At 6'4, 210, Ross is a great red zone threat. His 4.64 speed is limiting, but he's a physical receiver who can toss aside press corners and get chunks of yards with his stiff arm. He had neck surgery and missed 2020, which is a medical flag that still may be impacting him.

Khalil Shakir (Wide Receiver) The 6'0, 190 Shakir was the best route runner at the Senior Bowl, making him a great fit in Green Bay. His 4.43 speed allows him to get deep, but he's also tough and effective over the middle.

Braxton Jones (Offensive Tackle) At 6'7, 310 Jones has room to add weight. He doesn't drive block in the run game, but moves smoothly, covers ground well for a big guy, and uses his hands well, making him a great fit for Green Bay's zone blocking scheme.

Spencer Burford (Guard) The 6'5, 295 Burford played all over the line in college. Quick and long-armed, his movement ability makes him a good fit for zone blocking.

Tariq Woolen (Cornerback) Woolen is an athletic marvel at 6'4, 205 with 4.26 speed. His perfect RAS score is right up Gutekunsts's ally. A converted receiver who is still learning the position, Woolen has a lot of development to do, but with time could become a real gem.

Akayleb Evans (Cornerback) Long and physical at 6'2, 200, Evans is an aggressive player who loves contact and harassing receivers. A little underdeveloped in technique, but he has 4.46 speed and an attitude you can't teach.

Russ Yeast (Cornerback) Small and feisty, the 5'8, 190 Yeast plays with quick hands and a lot of energy and could be a developmental slot corner and a special teams contributor.

Tycen Anderson (Safety) Anderson is physical at 6'2, 210 and his 4.36 speed gives him range to cover on the back side. His coverage technique is still developing, but he real value isn't on defense - he considers himself the best special teams player in the draft after logging over 800 special teams snaps in his college career.

Tyreke Smith (Edge) A smaller, bendier edge rusher, the 6'3, 255 Smith has a burst with great upfield drive, showing the ability to arc around the high side or bend the corner. He's athletic, but inconsistent.

Jayden Peevy (Defensive Line) A big bull rusher, the 6'5, 310 Peevy plays with violence and has a nifty spin move from his basketball background. He plays with a hot motor and blocked four kicks in college. I could go for a kick-blocking specialist.

Cal Adomitis (Long Snapper) He's the best long snapper in the draft. We have three 7th round picks. If he's there in the 7th (don't laugh, there were two long snappers drafted in the 6th last year), I say take him.

A lot of the guys I listed here are special teams contributors first. As I wrote earlier, I'd love to see the Packers use their latest picks specifically to improve special teams. Sure, there's a chance you can hit a flyer and find a quality start down the road, but with three 7th round picks, the Packers can afford to put some much-needed focus on special teams.

I can't wait to see what they do.

7th rounders are comps and players that make the Practice Squad. Just say we have 3 picks at getting value and 3 shots in the dark.
Does anyone recall a 7th rounder other than D Driver contributing in any way to the Packers? Curious!

Thx Bruce. I would like to see a few of these in a Packers uniform come Sunday.

Sure wish we kept Lawrence Guy. C Scott Wells was a stellar R7 pick too.

Mark Tauscher did not suck.

All 3 players were greats, really. Unexpectedly so.

Every freaking pick matters. Huge.

STs this year. Get a better corps and, in this post Covid draft year, potential too. There are a ton of players that are of draft grade this year, probably enough for 8 or 9 rounds.

Shakir surely goes early today. There’s some interesting ideas here, but plenty more. Dareke Young (WR) and Pierre Strong (RB) have been raised in other threads today. Dai’Jean Dixon is another WR whose film belies his testing and has real skills. There are plenty more at other positions who have excellent ST pedigree and high ceilings as well.

Yeah Coldworld, I like all of those players! Should be a fun day.Neil Ferrel Jr. will put this D over the top. He’s my prize today. Likewise Braxton Jones, Kinnard, if by some insane stroke of luck w both OL, along with Bam. Great players.

Keep in mind, FTF, that you should also classify any UDFA as a "7th round pick."
Many of these guys also fill the roles on special teams, so although they don't become household names, they have definite value to the team.

Janis was a special team demon from the 7th. Jarret Bush was a UDFA of another team picked up on waivers. Probably our best two longer term STers of the last few decades.

gg, unless we make a trade we don't have any 6th round picks. 4th and 5th rounds are where we need to make some really solid picks to help the team today. Who knows what Gute will actually do. At least it looks like we have already added 4 potential starters to the roster so far. Thanks, Since '61

Yeah, I know. I just put those there for reference as to where they might land - my own notes to myself… just thought I’d share. PLUS, I could easily see Gutekunst trade out of our 140 or our 171 to add a couple R6 picks, maybe a couple more R7s too, depending…

There’s plenty of talent to be had today.

Yes, I can definitely see Gute trying to trade up out of the 7th for "his guy" in the 6th round. As always it will be a matter of who is left on his board and how the draft is falling. I'll be out with the family this evening so I won't be watching but my phone will keep me updated as the Packers make their picks. By tomorrow we'll have the entire picture. Enjoy! Thanks, Since '61

I noticed 'your guy' Velus Jones went to da Bears in round 3. You hit it on the head about him as every mock draft had him about round 6.

Cade Otton, Bo Melton, Khalil Shakir, Charlie Kolar, Zach Tom, Chris Paul, Spencer Burford, Chig Ogonkwo, Alec Lindstrom, Pierre Strong or Kyren Williams (who BG won't touch) or another RB.

Preferably two of the above.

I also like the idea of picking up a great special teams gunner type in round 5 or later--whoever BG likes for that.

Last pick: I'm hoping for a QB--I like Cole Kelley.

At this point in the draft, given how we’ve picked, Chig starts to look like value as a catching threat, especially if Shakir is gone. I’d also consider Dai’Jean Dixon as a piece that could help despite testing badly. Here’s a profile that’s hit both good and bad about him https://syndication.bleacherreport.com/amp/10021497-daijean-dixon-nfl-dr...

There is no way to know what Gute will do or how the draft will fall but I would like to see our next 3 selections include a TE, Edge and RB. In any order.

After that a Safety and another OL and WR. But Gute may decide to load up on WRs or OLs. Maybe more trades today. We'll see.

My focus or priority is a WR immediately in round 4. Then another OL. After that however it falls but I truly believe we missed at the all important Edge in the draft, which may end up biting us if any injuries at Edge. Thought after round 1 the Pack had round 2 set up perfectly to select both a quality WR and an Edge. Don't see an Edge left likely to have any significant value over our current back-ups. Thoughts?

Time to be looking for solid ST contributors, and hopefully Bisaccia will have some input here. Tycen Anderson, maybe--but he needs a lot of work on his coverage skills, which is not helpful for a safety. But he's a hard hitter and a smart guy, and possibly worthy of a fifth-round selection.

We'd better try to find another WR and an edge before that, though. Hopefully the board will be in our favor here.

Just wondering why Perrion Winfrey lasted until 108th. Too light, I suppose. Love Kolar but several others as well. Still, Kolar > Pierre Strong due to need, trying to win a super bowl in 2022. Strong probably has more upside, but TEs are much harder to find.

Welp. We might be officially fucked for EDGE help this draft. With Clemons & Uwazurike gone, we’ll likely have to hit FA adds at roster cuts.

That Watson trade up came with a price. End of R2 was our wheelhouse to grab a good EDGE, or TWO, which we needed.

I’m probably wrong, again… but, EDGE was a big need.

He’s had some issues catching technically and in terms of concentration. He can get sloppy. He’s body caught at times although much better last year. He didn’t test, apparently a knee issue I think, but he’s very agile/sudden in the short area and had long speed. Does he want it enough to focus and refine? If so he is possibly an Adams model prospect.

I predict in 10 years, we'll look back on this draft with very fond memories.

I think Gutey is doing a great job.

Go Gutey Go!

Except for ST value, I think BG has picked his last WR.

Shakir must have some issue. Amazed he’s fallen this far. Barno is too small for me. I’m not a fan of Barno. Low ceiling type I think is a UDFA this year

Officially happy with the draft. Watson and Doubs, 2 WRs on my PLEASE DO DRAFT list. 2 Georgia defensive players and an O-linemen. If we can get Barno ED, Williams CB, Woolen CB or maybe Likely TE, that would be icing on the cake. Go Pack!

Gutey is checking a lot of boxes with this draft. Another versatile OL...a likely a replacement for the roles Patrick and Turner filled.

I probably picked Zach Tom in half of my mocks, so two thumbs up!
Probably won't do more than special teams this year, but he might be GREAT as a ST blocker for returns! He's very athletic/fast!

Looks like they may have him at C. Good with that. Good to have that Center depth. The big positive is his versality of playing all the positions. RAS draft for sure.

I like the two developmental safeties already on the roster (Scott and Gaines), so I'd rather they go BPA. A RB/returner would be nice.
Dang. My crush, Kyren Williams, just went to the Rams. :-(
My other biggest crush, Khalil Shakir, went to Buffalo. They and KC have taken several of my crushes over the past few years.

Maybe Zach Tom is versatile enough to be a long snapper as well. Saves a roster spot.

I like it, 2 good receivers, 2 good OL, and 2 outstanding picks for the defense. 4 picks left, hope for S, would love to find a solid return guy with speed.

What positions or who is next?

Safety Tycen Andsersen, Edges Amare Barno and Jeffery Gunter for needs? I don't think any TE left. Or pure BPA the rest of the way?

Wooooooo. Had to take a moment to collect myself… Anyhow… sorry. LOL I got this.

Nice getting the extra 7 for just 8 picks back to take an EDGE Athlon had R2 value on???

Pick #179: KINGSLEY ENAGBARE RANKED #56 overall - Athlon

Got Denver's 179 and 234 (7th).

Gutey now has Four 7th rounders to get a head start on the NFL on the UDFA class which is going to be a good group this year due to covid rules giving many players a 4th, 5th or even 6th year.

Good strategy.

I think I would've swung for the fences with Amare because of his 4.3 speed, but Gutey knows what he's doing, so there was probably a reason he didn't.

How often do you get an all SEC first team selection at Edge/DE in the 5th round? There are going to be some very talented prospects in the UDFA class. Gutey is going to take the cream of that crop in the 7th with 4 selections. Still need Safety depth.

The Packer Defense is looking to be wicked good on paper. Now Barry has to coach them up. I can see Kingsley Enagbare playing many snaps in rush packages inside and standing up.

Could you imagine Amare Barno on STs though with 4.3 speed? LMAO... That would've been fun to watch IMO. 6' 5" 246 lbs. with 4.36 speed Gunner on punts and KO? ; }

Safeties Marquis Bell and Bubba Bolden, Florida A&M and Miami. Both 6'2' over 210lbs. Both under 4.5 40.
Also I would like sleeper TE Austin Allen Nebraska,6'8 260lbs really good hands.
QB Cole Kelly SE Louisiana, 6'7 250-passed for over 5000 yards & 50TD-athletic big guy
Tariq Carpenter Georgia Tech, 6'2 220-S/LB
Wide receivers Justyn Ross or Kevin Austin
I really wanted Cade York PK LSU to replace Mason Crosby
Any 4 of these at S-TE-WR-QB
