That was a lot of time spent discussing DTs who you admit we won't take in the first round.

I checked. Last year, Kenny Clark played the most snaps on our defensive line at about 800, or 78%. 800 snaps divided by 17 games = somewhere just under 50 snaps a game.

Reed, and Lowry, had about 1200 snaps together, and those will have to be replaced.

Slaton got 333 snaps, mostly on first down or short yardage. That's about 20 per game.

Then we have Wyatt, who had 224, or about 13/game.

Total snaps in 2022= around 2550. We have to replace 1200 snaps. At this point, without adding anybody, I would expect that Slaton and Wyatt would pick up better than half of that between them, but that's still going to leave us short by 20 snaps a game. And that's if we don't have injuries. (hahahha). We have Ford, and Slayton, in the mix as well, and they are currently our #4 and #5 guys. If we think they're good for 20 snaps a game between them, we're OK. If you don't, then why are they on the roster?

I'm not seeing us spending a premium pick on a DT. We have to put an offense around Love, and that is going to have to be the priority early on. But there are definitely some guys that we could look at on Day 3 who could come in and give us some snaps as a DE on first down to help rest Clark and Wyatt, who will be the starting DEs for us. Some of them actually have some potential as interior rushers, too.

Not only taking up snaps but also depth in case there are injuries. We are thin.

Excellent segment. Many good points. The reality is the Pack was a mediocre 27th in pass rush. In addition they could hardly ever stop the run. For that reason Improving the front four is a major priority as I see it. Moreover, we do not need "just another body" we need a play maker..... a difference maker. That means our first pick in the draft. It is a long long way from 15 to 45. Ideally, a player who could play edge or maybe even in the middle at times. There are several players who could foot the bill as impact players. To be specific, If NOLAN SMITH is on the board it is a no brainer! If he was 20 lbs heavier he would be the best player in the draft. In my view he might be the best player in the draft anyway. Andy gave a very persuasive argument for why he would be a great pick. He does have that Clay Mathews attitude only is a lot faster at 4.39. Two other players mentioned who are fast enough to play any where along the line are Calijah Kancey and A. Adebaware (who could play either middle or edge (as he runs a 4.49). The fact that C Kancey does not play in a 3-4 defense seems irrelevant. Watch the film of him. I suppose Aaron Donald would not meet the criteria? Kancey will not drop into the second round. None of these will. That said, I agree we need Edge first, as the TE needs to be addressed in the second round. Both A. Adebaware and Miles Murphy would also be a suitable for first round if if Smith is not available. I think it is certain we are not getting the 13th pick of the jets. Hopefully next year. So it all depends how it plays out. The only critical need on offense is TE. Personally I would trade up to get Nolan Smith in the first if necessary. He would upgrade the entire defense! I would try him as a roving safety playing close to the line of scrimmage (he is faster than our corner-backs) and he is a punishing bone crunching tackler. Nuff said.
