No Excuses for Joe Barry and Packers Defense in Loss to Falcons

Joe Barry's unit was trampled by Bijan Robinson and the Falcons in Sunday's loss.

There is plenty of blame to be shared around for Green Bay’s fourth-quarter capitulation which led to a 25-24 loss to the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, with the offense and defense both playing their part in the collapse.

The Packers offense picked up just seven yards on 10 plays across their final three drives, possessing the ball for only two minutes and 19 seconds in the final frame, opening the door for a comeback.

Jordan Love didn’t see Romeo Doubs breaking wide open for what would likely been a game-sealing touchdown on the first drive, before A.J. Dillon failed to convert a third-and-1 on the following possession.

Love then gave the wrong verbal signal which would have made a fourth-and-1 sneak play live, leading to a false start. He also missed Doubs on the doomed final drive.

But these issues were to be expected with a young offense, led by a first-time starting quarterback, and comprising pass catchers exclusively in their first or second years in the league.

That was before the Packers offense was robbed of three of its most important pieces: starting left tackle David Bakhtiari, star running back Aaron Jones, and leading receiver Christian Watson.

The offense has excuses for their fourth-quarter stumble, but the defense, led by embattled coordinator Joe Barry, has none left.

While the offense is young, the defense is full of veterans and established quality players. Kenny Clark, Rashan Gary, Preston Smith, Jaire Alexander, Rasul Douglas. There were seven first-round picks on Green Bay’s defense on Sunday.

For all the criticism Barry has rightly received, his players let him down versus Atlanta.

Whether it was Gary crashing down the line allowing Desmond Ridder to prance into the end zone on fourth-and-4, Alexander and Walker dropping interceptions or Douglas missing an assignment and letting Bijan Robinson run free down the sideline on a wheel route, Green Bay’s big-name defenders must take their share of the responsibility.

There are personnel issues on defense, no doubt. The defensive line mostly consists of players who are more suited to rushing the passer than stopping the run, which the Falcons took full advantage of.

The safety room is as suspect as Packers fans might have feared, with tackling and coverage both real issues.

But knowing the players he has on hand, and knowing all the Falcons want to do offensively is run the ball, one would expect an experienced coordinator to have a better plan in place to stifle the run game and force Ridder to win through the air.

Instead, Barry gladly obliged as Robinson and Tyler Allgeier ran the ball down Green Bay’s throat all afternoon.

The nadir came when the Packers lined up with a four-man front featuring just two defensive linemen against the Falcons’ 13-personnel. The Falcons put up 211 rushing yards in total en route to victory.

In key situations, there were more instances of Green Bay’s corners giving far too much cushion to Atlanta’s pass catchers at the line of scrimmage, leading to easy conversions on third downs.

While there are soft spots in the Packers’ defensive roster, there is more than enough talent on hand to scheme up a more effective unit.

Whether he stands on the sideline or sits up in the booth, it doesn’t matter, Barry has shown what he is at this point, and he isn’t the answer.

That is a pretty good summation. No adaptation to a run heavy O and hoping a pass oriented line up would cut it. It did not. Outside of Slaton and particularly Clark, all those lighter guys got steam rollered. Meanwhile we have a DT on the practice squad inactive. That’s before your point Z out the 2DL looks yesterday.

It’s not the first time we’ve insisted on this either. It’s either arrogance that his way is right or an inability to have more than one approach. Maybe both. It was eerily like rewatching the Eagles last year. Sorry, once was enough, but to repeat the same errors and fail as badly (against a seemingly lesser team) is indeed indefensible.

No wonder LaFleur was frothing at the mouth by his standards over being carved up. Well now he’s confirmed that wasn’t acceptable, what he going to do about it will be the true test.

Next week looks like a challenge more designed for our build: a (very much better) WR group and passer though. Let’s hope we can stop that. If Jamaal can run on us at will, that probably will call the reaper. If we can’t defend against the pass though, Barry will probably have no where left to hide either. Big week for Barry, big problems for LaFleur if he fails.

Stopping the run is overrated.

When the Pack inevitably gets into the playoffs it is not like NFC powerhouses Philly & SF have viable running attacks, right?

Sarcasm right? Because stopping the run can be overrated, but then you have to hang on to those would-be picks that hit you in the chest. And give the offense another chance at scoring, or at least get the tired defense off the field. Or maybe even grab a pick six when it's there for the taking. Not every QB will give us those gifts but we didn't make anything out of them.

Stopping the run matters when the defense is so gassed they give up 3 scores in the 4th quarter.

Gary showed he still has a way to go in his recovery. It showed when he was unable to chase down Ridder. It will come, but it will take time. The motor is the same, but right now it's apparent that he doesn't have the same speed.

How many DC's have met with so much futility possessing 7 or 8 First Round draft picks?

Have any DC's ever had as many first rounders? I don't know where to find the information but I would like to know if any did. And what was their record as DC?

Maybe Barry is the only one who has had so much talent matched by even more disappointing results.

Can you really throw the blame on the players who were switched into playing pass prevent D against a Run O as the first downs, plays and scores continued to mount?

Joe Barry is out of his depth just as he was last year and the year before. He may well be a good position coach and a nice bloke but he is not a co-ordinator. I don't understand why he was re-appointed and I don't understand why anybody is surprised at what happened against the Falcons; it's what always happens with Barry.

We have struggled against teams that can run really well, if they can at least pass adequately. Yesterday Ridder was able to (in Large part because only one of 5 interception worthy plays was picked off). We struggle against those types. Most teams aren’t that good. So no, it would take new failings to struggle against all good teams. However, until it’s fixed, we will have hard time getting past a few teams that just match up well in that regard.

Rodgers generally had a much more experienced set of skill players. That makes a big difference. It took 2 plus seasons for Rodgers to be able to kill teams off consistently. By that point, he did have a good D, a very good one.

Sometimes it’s just time to stop.

Always lost when it counts, never played like his pay, never played like 20% of the cap.

Love has just win one Lombardi. Not a gigh standart what AR did.

BY THE WAY...what a weak loooser

not lost on me is the irony of Aaron Rodgers rejecting science & medicine when millions of people were dying but suddenly believing in it because he wants a bionic Achilles at 40.

Keeanu Benton is looking pretty good for the Steelers. The OTs and TE had to be stocked in 2022. This guy has rigged the game for his fallback excuses. Love is fine. Where was the play design? Reed should have been the man in crunch time, not a Seattle '14 rerun. He didn't run the clock down on the FG attempt. He didn't roster Ford and Savage. He's not the guy going with two bigs trying to stop a bonafide running offense. Rodgers would have been sacked during the final sequence. Toure has to come down with the catch. Dillon stumbled out of two first downs and you get 3 and outs.

It's clearly both as the article itself points out. Yes Rodgers often elevated the team to win anyway despite a defense that couldn't stop late scores. But this defense with all this so-called talent gave up 3 scores in the 4th quarter to a middling team.

There's a specific word for that, oh yeah, nepotism. What was their record the year both were shown the door? Oh yeah, 0-16.

Barry couldn't get it done in Detroit or Washington. Why does MLF think he can be successful in GB? It's painfully obvious to fans and sports writers that Barry needs to go--and soon. If MLF won't do it, then he should be gone too. But we all know Murphy won't do anything because he's basking in his glory for getting the NFL draft. Just one big happy family; they'd rather be buds than make the tough decisions to have a successful franchise.

Let's face facts, Barry has been a defensive coaching disaster throughout his career. Although a change should be made at D coordinator, nothing is going to happen during this regular season. MLF needs get his managerial coaching ducks in a row come the end of the season and if he doesn't, two major coaching changes will need to occur.

Your beef is with LaFleur. Also too, the offense lost this game. The defense did enough to win. LaFleur spit the bit, again.

Hmmm, giving up 3 scores in the 4th quarter means "the offense lost this game?" Might your perspective be a bit out of place?

I seriously doubt LaFleur develops the defensive game plan with Barry. He's not a defensive coach and never has been one. He's gotta be busy figuring out the offense. My guess is he hands the defensive part over to Barry completely and says, "I trust you to do what is right here."

Yes the beef should be with LaFleur, for both the defensive and offensive failures. He is responsible for both. AND for the ST failures. He's the head coach. Over the course of this season, we should start to find out if LaFleur is really a good head coach or if it was the talents of a Hall of Famer that elevated this team during MLF's first 3 seasons.

Maybe MLF needs to delegate some duties to his OC like play calling, so he can focus on not making bone headed mistakes throwing away timeouts and worse. And have more time to draw up new plays each week, schemed specifically for the opponent. And make in-game adjustments.

And realize you need to call up #99 to help stop a team you know is going to run at you. No, we don't know how J Ford would have played, but just having a fresh set of legs to add to the rotation on your D line might have made the difference.

No, we don't. We had a disappointing loss and you're never as good or as bad as you look. We took a team that was missing several starters on the road for the second straight week and scored 24. It should/could have been more. To me, that's impressive. It's not the coaches fault if somebody drops an interception.

We didn't turn the rock over. We had a one-point loss on the road. It could have easily gone another way. It's not Armageddon.

I think this young team, and some of the coaches, needed to get a loss out of the way to learn what not to do. At the end of the game, I felt they were for the most part competitive save for Q4, where failures to run committed DL rotations wore our starters out, when we needed them the most.

LaFleur deciding to punt after the Delay of Game penalty was curious, being the game was in a dome, and Carlson would have benefitted from that test, and the team by adding 3 pts. had he made it. Set them back just 5 yds...

Some coaching issues/personnel issues remained, with LaFleur failing to run Dillon out of the pistol, using him on pitch outs, etc. OL line play did suffer with the injuries though.

For the most part, I agree with you. Glad you got to see the game live, LH. That had to have been a fun experience, despite the close loss by a single point.

This was a much needed learning experience, and they got it over with early, against an insanely dynamic talent in Bijan Robinson. Barry Sanders was a nightmare for the best defenses in the NFL. 1 point.

You know, one thing I always trusted aobut Mike McCarthy. When he said they would get better, I believed him. And his teams did just that, for many years, improving in areas they needed throughout the course of the season. Not to perfection. But he seemed so focused on growing the team on both sides of the ball; never being too happy with wins or too destroyed over losses. He just got back to work. I don't know that I believe LaFleur, yet!

I do. I guess my bigger point in all of this is the 2023 Packers team is getting their sea legs under them, for lack of a better term. We're going to experience all kinds of ups and downs as the NFL's 2nd youngest team learns how to play at a Pro level.

Totally agree that if Week 2 at ATL is our worst game of the season, we'll be sitting pretty good. But, there's a long way to go. Hopefully we can get some players back from injury before too long, and maybe get some other positions resolved, scheme changes, etc.

My guess is we will see a lot of ups and downs these next 5-6 weeks, which we all should have expected. If we're fortunate enough to keep our injuries to a minimum, gain awareness of top level play and realize high level performance, the last half of the season could prove special. This team is learning much right now. Good.

Green Gold. I agree with your observation that MLF chose to punt instead of letting Carlson try the FG. The guy has hit 57 yarders with 5 yards to spare.

I couldn’t help admire the Falcons head coach go for it time after time in game. Even the announcers were flabbergasted with his decisions.

His players fed off his aggressive “take no prisoners “ mind set. He just wasn’t going to lose.

Hopefully MLF can learn from his example.

Is it just me or is there a whole bunch of brain dead offensive guru's out there - watching tonights games. How many times are teams going back to pass when just inside field goal range and taking a sack? Like we have done the past 2 games. Even the game that we just lost we had a chance at the end of the game to come up with a 4th down stop and of course we didnt do it and if we could have and won the game - when the smart offensive move should have been kick the field goal - But of course we couldnt come up with the stop and they ran more time off of the clock.
Now it was only one game and one that we should have won - but maybe the loss will be good for MLF - He is not the guru that he thought he was after the first win without AR. Even against the Bears he abandoned the run and his first down calls have been mine boggling.

The offense is the inexperienced side of the ball in comparison to the defense. Offense was down 4 starters including their two top big play threats. Defense had all of their preferred players available. Offense puts up 24 points on the road very short handed, the defense with everyone playing gives up 200+ yards rushing to a team that you knew full well has to run effectively to win. The defense needed to come up with the goods to win this game and laid an ostrich egg. Is it players, is it scheme? Without being completely on the inside of the operation we really do not have the full picture. However, the facts say that this team has been one of the worst defensive teams against the run during the last two coordinators running more or less the same type of scheme. The head coach ultimately bears responsibility because the failures of his coordinators are his failures. I hope they can turn it around but history is probably telling us that this leopard can not change its spots.

A better place than winning 13 games for 3 seasons in a row under LaFleurs first years? No GM could have fixed Rodger's broken thumb last year. Last year is on Gute as much as anything. He extended Rodgers, whether you agree it was the right thing after another MVP or not.

Maybe Barry should have been fired, but that is LaFleur's call; the GM doesn't hire or fire the co-ordinators. The HC that does that. Gutey left the team with very little for pass catchers last year and it showed. Promising rookies that had decent seasons for first year players . . . role playing Cobb, role playing Lazard, and nobody at TE that was EVER a threat in any way. I think that's all on Gute and he fixed it by picking 5 pass catching players in the draft. Actually, 8 of them in the last 2 drafts. Those failures have nothing to do with the management system.

Sack Barry, hire a good medium and get them to channel the ghost of Fritz Shurmur.

It's a long, long time since we had a good DC.

MLF needs to channel a Bill Parcells level of ruthlessness, at least long enough to have Barry removed. I'd go further and say that at least one coaching change should be made every year in an effort to continuously upgrade the whole unit.

Head coaches need to look at their coaches the same way they do at players. There is a minimum standard required and the bottom line is you are only here until we find someone better.

This game loss was on Love and the offense. Out scored 13-0 in the 4th Q giving up a 24-12 lead. Their last three possessions totaled only 11 yards with Love 0-6 in late game clutch time. He failed in accuracy to hit receivers and move the chains. If one of those three possessions kills some time and they get even one FG it’s a Packer’s win. Atlanta had 83 offensive plays to Green Bay’s 46 and the Falcons dominated time of possession leaving the Packers D totally exhausted. This game was lost by the offense inability to mount time consuming drives in order to give the defense adequate rest.

Absolutely. On top of that if your team is in the lead in the 4th quarter you try and stop the passing game from quickly letting the opponent back in the game. The offense needed to make the Falcons pay for trying to mount a comeback via the run game and they failed. If the offense did a single thing in the 4th quarter the Falcons fans would be complaining about trying to make a comeback in the modern, pass first NFL by primarily running the ball.

Are you old enough to remember the "Fail Mary" play, every player involved swore (for years) that they weren't intentionally throwing the ball forward.

Guess what? They lied. Finally admitting to it years (38 for one) after the play.

This isn't a court of law. Nobody is swearing on the bible before coming up to the podium or being interviewed.

Wow! The Joe Barry hate is palpable! We used to hate Dom Capers with a white hot passion! Then we really hated Mike Pettine, remember the 49er championship game? Now it's poor Uncle Joe. This is the age of offenses people! The Packers MUST play complimentary football. It is a team loss and that happens. It's early in the season and we have a long way to go. Let's try toning down the hate and finger pointing and try supporting the team. Once the season is done we can reassess our coaching performance. Besides, what I saw was a physical team beat us down on a player v player level. They blocked better, ran better, covered better and made the plays when they needed them...and we still almost won. Take heart naysayers and act more like the rational adults I know you all are.

KC's defense gave up more points than Green Bay's defense last year.

Before they changed the rules, when you could play bump and run and hit the QB late and jab your hands into an offensive lineman's face, defense won championships.

But now, you've got receivers that are 6-5 240 running 4.4 40s. You can't touch them after 5 yards. You're guarding them with much smaller guys. If there's any contact downfield, it's PI. QBs are completing 70% of their passes.

The deck is stacked. It is what it is. 15 teams scored 30 or more last week. The best offenses will go to the playoffs and advance.

Thanks for the good sense, Boneman. We always hate the DC. He's always the whipping boy.

We were average (in points) last year, and we're average this year so far. That's why the haters have to contrive other measures that the defense "must measure up to " and don't.

Sunday, how many home teams scored fewer points than Atlanta? Not very many. 15 teams hit 30 or more. Expecting to hold teams to 20 on their home field isn't very realistic, IMO.

Hate—the most overused and unsuitable word in the American lexicon.
Posing a suggestion that we need a new DC—-especially in light of his track record, has nothing to do with hate.
I hate the divisiveness that using the word hate incites.

Joe Berry has proven that he is late at making adjustments. I would be happy if he would make halftime adjustments where a good DC makes adjustments all game long. He thinks his plan will work. Look at last year playing mostly zone when he has a man defense. Once he switch to man and had JA following the best WR they did better even without Gary. He finally moved up to the booth. Never understood how a coach thinks he can coach better on the sideline. You cannot see as much and there are too many distrctions.

Berry needs to go.

No it is not his fault. Bahk did not play eventhough he is the highest paid player on the team. I do not believe it is because of his knee. He did not want to play on turf and MM and gute allow this t happen. Sit him the rest of the year and get rid of him.

About the defense:
think about this terrible 4th qr again. Did you also feel how I felt? Falcons were lining up, I knew, you all knew, Packers knew, Barry knew that they will run 8 out of 10 plays at least. The problem was that we also knew they will go 5+ yards for sure like guaranteed. It was like this 2 full drives with short pauses for 2 long passes. Is it really THAT HARD for us that there is not even a play to be called to have a small chance to stuff this run shorter than after 5 yards? If it was once, I'd assume Bijan is a generational talent and it just showed up and Falcons execute perfectly their new schemes or sth. But it was like this every year starting with Raheem Mostert who surely isn't generational talent. We let players beat records on us and average QBs get into control like elite ones.
Somebody please answer my question, because I am relatively newer to football than most of you. What is the real, primary problem for us stopping the run?
1. We have the worst defeners in the league in this term and even good play calling can't help because they don't know how to execute? - so why we draft only for pass rush?
2. Our D is not premium but not the worst in run stopping but the play calling makes things much worse than it could easily be.

I vote for #2, why? The problem is much wider than only run stopping. It's like ignoring the opponents strenghts or brave/crazy predictions he is going to fool us and attack from the other side. Our rivals rarely surprise, they punch us with their strongest card and we seem to be fine with this and not make any in-game corrections. Our first meeting with Vikings in 2022 - we let Jefferson fly around without coverage the whole game, no corrections made. JaMarr Chase a year before. Ravens in 2021 - we knew their only true weapon on limited roster was Mark Andrews, and what - 136 yds and 2 TDs. I know stars will shine and hurt us, but we seem like not even trying to limit them. The next argument is how we couldn't stop slot receivers in 2021-2022 and how problematic was defending diagonal passes. Next argument for #2 is lining up Campbell with Bijan lined up as a WR. Who in the world could even think about it? Unfortunately there is one who called this in reality and we need to deal with it.

About our O:
their production in 4th was pathetic. Dillon's production and Love's sneak call was very frustrating. Also Love didn't see open receivers in the end when stress probably made him more rigid in mind and body. But how many of you could suppose that Love will be 6-0 in TD-int after two games and that's without WR1, RB1 playing 25% of time, and OL hurt again? I would take it. Plus, I remember when the last year our O had multiple 3 and outs and punts in a row, unproductive halfs and it was with HoF QB at the helm. Not to mention he didn't see Lazard open in many much more important situations than Love in week 2. Throwing to doubled Adams instead. Offense didn't deliver in 4qr and we can only find excuses for them. But if there is really a learning curve and youth needs to develop, this is now when we need to be patient. /it can be sometimes ugly this season. Be prepared.

Yup. We knew what they were going to try to do. Jerry Grey knew exactly what Joe Barry was going to do. Jerry exploited that, won the game, AND put it on film. He gave the whole league a clinic on exactly how to beat our team. If for no other reason, JB has to go. He's incapable of doing anything differently and if it ever worked it never will again unless a team just ignores those lessons.

Yet we know no adjustments will be made. The only question is if JB will be replaced before MM.

You can't blame the coach when two of your top defenders were essentially AWOL. To be specific: Jaire Alexander and De'Vondre Campbell. We expect better from them and they would say the same. On offense most of Dillon's yardage came after contact. Generally at the line of scrimmage. So yes, there is plenty of blame to go around. Game defensive ball goes to Quay Walker. He was outstanding.

Are you familiar with very old and true proverb: Fish smells from the head!

I have nothing against Joe Barry as person. I do not know him and I do not have nothing positive or negative against him. He might be very nice person.

But Joe Barry as Packers DC - I have a lot vs him. Unfortunately nothing effective. Look at this statistic: Atlanta scored 2 TD and 4 FG. What that means? It means when field is short (as it is in the redzone or at GtoG), Atlanta had not much success. Why is that? Because field was short and all Packers D were near their targets, not 10 or 15 yards down field. So, Packers D was able to stop run (except that TD by Ridder what looks like he surprised even his team).

You know what I think. I posted my opinion of Packers DC under the article "Game balls and Lame calls".

Looking 2 days away from the game, I came to one conclusion - MLF & Joe Barry are the fingers of one hand - those small, the weakest fingers.

I do not blame players. Especialy not the D players (well Jaire shoud swallow some criticism, it looks like he was not in the game with his mind). When you look playing time on offense it is clear that D was exhausted towards the end of the game, while offense play calls were preseason play calls in 4th Q. So MLF expected from Jordan Love to find a way to throw the ball in very, very small windows with so little chance to success, even for HOFer QB.

Complete coaching staff - HC, DC and OC -should be fired at the end of the season if HC do not go to acting GM (famous Mark "we are not idiots" Murphy) and ask him to replace DC before week 6 of the season. I also expect from Brian Gutekunst to support that request.

I know we all know that this will not be the case. So, we can only prepare ourselves for more painful loses through this season. Fresh breath will only come with fresh change of attitude.

I will not place any other prove for the decision except replacing of FG unit by Punting squad, knowing that your kicker has leg for 65+ yards FGs and that he has the best FG% from 50+ yards through preseason & TC. How pathetic and wrong was just that decision!

Packers fans should start the petition for replacing Joe Barry! And we should do that for the sake of all Packers players, organization and us, fans.

Thank you!

Matt. They scored 25. Do you know how many teams scored more than 25 points this week? 15.n Mostly at home, mostly in wins, although the Broncos managed to score 33 in a loss....at home.

We're 14th in points after two weeks, both of them road games. That's better than the vaunted Jets and Eagles.

To me, "negative points" would mean "more than average" Neither the Bears nor the Falcons scored more points than average. So we're average AT WORST.

I do have a question. Let's say we had done a better job on Bijan on the ground. Would Atlanta have just continued to give the ball to somebody who was getting stuffed? Or would they have done something else on some of those plays.......like throw it.? Because they had more yards through the air than they did on the ground.

The Fundamental fact I cannot get past is that if you discourage the run, it encourages the pass, and vice-versa. Since an average QB makes 7 yards per attempt, I'd rather encourage them to run it for a 5 yard average, because 5<7.

People are clamoring for us to put more big bodies on the DL. For what purpose? So the QB can scramble away more effectively? So we can encourage more passes? So we can take a pass defender off the field in place of a run stuffer?

The Packers have Picked their Poison. The priority is pass defense. They want agile guys attacking the edge and containing the QB when he breaks the pocket. That's considered more important than stuffing the run.

Which brings me back to the question I've asked here many times: Why isn't it points? Why does the defense always seem to be measured against some type of measure other than points? Isn't that the purpose of the defense? Keeping points off the board?

They've given up 45 in two games. That's average. If you consider it's on the road, it's better than average. Don't listen to these people who use apocalyptic language to describe our defense.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

The Atlanta game was disappointing to me because we didn't play a full 60 minutes. I do not recall a Matt LaFleur team losing a game when they had a double-digit lead going into the 4th quarter and I don't think I'll see it again for a while. Either of the two interceptions that we had a good shot at would have been enough to change the game.

The total inability of the offense to burn any time off the clock at all when we had the lead in the 4th....that hurt a lot. We had the ball and a 24-19 lead with about 11:50 to go and we threw an incomplete bomb, followed by a short run, followed by an incomplete. We burnt 40 seconds off the clock, and then we put the defense out on the field. After a FG, the offense is back on the field, leading 24-22. This time, did not get a first down but we at least burnt 2 minutes off the clock. Fast Forward: Atlanta kicks the game winning FG with a minute left. If we had just burned a little more time off the clock, this game would have ended before they had a chance to kick that field goal.

To restate what I said in the beginning, we just didn't play for 60 minutes. We had quite a few chances to win this game, despite everything. Nonetheless, the matter at hand is winning at home against New Orleans, and I think it's going to take a 30 point effort by the Packers. I hope all hands are on deck.

3 yards average per play creates a three and out. Four yards and they'll march for a TD every time. Allowing five yards per run is no better than allowing seven yards per pass, they're going to get first downs at will and score.

Our defense is designed to keep the opposing offense on the field until they score, unless they shoot themselves in the foot. Our talent is better than that. That means the scheme is hurting the team and coaching is the weak link. Players knowing that creates problems. These are smart guys, they know this if we do.

It does not matter how long it takes the opponent to score, they're going to get the ball every alternating possession. We need a scheme designed to STOP the opponent. That does not matter if they run or pass, they need to be STOPPED or they are going to score.

Therefore letting them run for five yards is not a winning strategy. And turning it into basketball where you expect to score with every possession is not a winning strategy for this team either. We're more likely to shoot ourselves in the foot before scoring, having the less experienced O.

The same is true of the passing D. Most often our guys are getting to the receiver to limit YAC, after allowing the reception. If there were a way to get more PBUs and interceptions, that would be better. Yet our pass defense is pretty good, and we don't often see obvious ways to improve this aspect.

Hopefully scheme works better against the Saints ...

My final comment about the defense - Bears game we had a couple of idiotic after the play penalties, This last game we had a whole bunch of missed assignments and obvious dumb plays - Gary looked at the QB with the ball and ran towards where the pocket was rather than going after him. That was not a smart move. Against the Bears our defense was swarming - we still missed a bunch of tackles but because we were swarming we cleaned it up most of the time ( Fields got away a couple of times but not like last year). That didnt occur against the Falcons. So obviously coaching and defensive discipline is not there and that Barry's fault. A lot of DC's get their group to play over their head no matter the talent. Barry cant seem to get it together. Dropped passes sometimes occur but when right into one's hands - and you see it coming - NEVER. Final note on Bak - in watching the Bears game a couple of times he was laying on his back for a few seconds at the end of the play. His knee is done - and he will be lucky to make through this season. Maybe Lafluer needs to look closely at a rotational situation to keep him as good as possible and get the other guy snaps when he is fresh - of course it will depend upon Jenkin's health. And what about Caleb Jones and his development - I like him better than Ryhan - just from preseason but that was against other teams second teamers.

Rotating Bakh to keep him fresh is definitely needed. Notice they have both Nijman and Walker at LT. NOT doing that but keeping Bakh in until he's making his knee worse is the same issue as MLF saying every week that he needs to get #33 more touches. At some point you have to stop making the same mistake and do what you know.

What players are on the field is something that I think (hope?) MLF has total control over. I think he's good at receiving input from other coaching staff, but decisions like substituting Bakh or dialing up a run for #33 are within his job description. (Whereas firing JB probably isn't his exclusive call, contrary to what many here suppose)

These are reasons to remove duties from MLF. Let his OC do more, let him focus on the big picture as HC; clock management, player management / snap count, in-game adjustments. Creating a scheme and plays specific to the weekly opponent. He's not doing this! He needs to delegate what he can, and focus on these important things no one else can do. This is nothing they don't expect from players, it's a direct parallel to a QB not trying to do too much and any player not making the same mistake over and over.

Mt Caleb at RT, I don't know if he's 100% after his injury? I'd love to see Zach Tom at C. Haven't thought about Myers at LG; coming up with a winning combination for our O line is the single most important thing and they have not done it.

Enough is enough. Barry is no DC. First quarter, ATL was 3rd and 15 deep in their own territory. Barry has the DBs playing 15-20 yds off the ball. Ask yourself "What's wrong with this picture?" Fire Barry and bring in Jim Leonard to straighten out this defense before it's too late and the season is lost.

He sent a VERY stale 5 man pressure on that play. ATL picked up the blitz by keeping their tight end in formation and also keeping the running back in for protection as well. That play was 6 defenders against 3 routes. I’ve got zero issue with the back side defenders aligning with their heels at the sticks where I’ve got the issue is with how awful the pressure was. It was a wasted blitz and Ridder had all day to throw. No stunts no movement just simply BOB (big on big).

Since they had additional blockers stay in and they were in their own territory the play call should have been bracket on London and man on the other two receivers. With the other two playing zones. One zone middle third other zone shallow third just shy of the sticks. Who ever was man on the tight end and running back should’ve added into the blitz once they saw their man staying in and blocking. This creates urgency on quarterback. Worst case they fall off and he checks down to the TE or RB. The team rallies up and stops them short of the sticks. Simple stuff but Bart’s play call was basically one foot in one foot out. Since he was conservative it cost them and was a big momentum builder for the falcons offense.

This Is not a player issue. This is an Xs and Os problem. Routinely throughout the game the Packers D was put in situations that no other D coordinator would fall victim to.

We’ve all seen the countless times Aaron Rodgers quick snapped the ball because the defense was subbing in a matching personnel grouping. That’s because a staff member has one job on game day, that’s seeing the personnel grouping being subbed in, telling the coordinator and responding accordingly.

Joe Barry’s personnel groupings rarely matched what was on the field. Being in Nickel when a fullback, tight end and Allgeier are in the huddle is not only stupid it’s downright ignorant. On 4th and inches with a bunch formation having the safety five yards off as the fullback motions to the bunch side is first day of seventh grade kind of stuff. Other times the backers were aligned to the weak side of the formation with the safety 8 yards off the LOS. Of course the safety is going to have a hard time tackling. He’s trying to shed a fullback or lineman then dealing with a shifty back. The players aren’t to blame. It doesn’t matter if you have the best defense in the NFL or in this case 8 first round picks, if the coach has you out of position you will not succeed. ATL played the hand they were dealt. The packers had five DBs on the field almost 75% of the game. This is borderline insanity when you genuinely consider Ridder had a very so so game and he wasn’t going to beat this team with his arm. That’s what the defense should have made happen. Make Desmond Ridder beat them with his arm.

With Jordan Love and the offense, they had so much success when they were using PAP despite how ineffective the running game was. When they started getting away from play action and three step drops the offense imploded. The forth quarter was almost entirely straight drop backs of 5 and 7 step drops. Thus the play fakes never kept the backers honest and let the d line t off on the back up offensive linemen.

In both instances each play caller got out of what they did best and what was effective early on (first quarter for defense, second and third quarters for the offense). Disappointing because I’ve seen articles come out about green bays defensive line and it’s lack of ability in stopping the run. Stupid! Green Bay runs a gap control defensive line. It’s not their job to stop the run it’s their job to keep the o linemen from getting to the second level. Having a safety doing a backers job will result in 6-7 yards a carry all day on an nfl field.

Ultimately it comes down to the man calling the defense. I can give my two year old a fork but that doesn’t mean he’s going to use it.

Determining the personnel groupings is actually an easy task. Especially in the NFL where the game day roster is 53. The team will only carry one full back 2-3 tight ends. So after scouting all week it’s simple to know who’s who for personnel packages. The fact is Barry actually responded well in first quarter with three down linemen, two stand up ends (outside linebackers) and two middle linebackers with a safety at backer depth. Hence the resulting 3 points because of it and stopping them on the one yard line three consecutive plays. For whatever reason after the first quarter there was a lot of two down linemen, two stand up ends and one or two backers playing middle linebacker. Except they’d have Quay Walker playing almost a will linebacker because they had the safety playing coverage to the offensive strength or tight end side. Which goes to reason why draft a coverage backer in the first round if you are going to align him opposite from the pass and run strength of the offense.

This is why you saw quay Walker have so many tackles. Playing weak side he only needed to weave through the traffic to make tackles rather than take on any blockers on run plays. So most of his tackles were at 5-6-7 yards a pop. ATL won’t care about that if they average that many yards every rush. They even had the poor cover backer of the two Mike linebackers split out wide on Bijan Robinson on that 5 wide short yardage play. With zero inside help unless you count the safety 12 yards deep in the middle of the field as inside help. That play was the equivalent to a lay up in basketball.

I saw that. I don't know enough to be able to articulate it, but I saw it and did not understand the reason for the change or how it was supposed to work.

The way I look at it, Jerry Grey HATED Barry ball while he was here last year, and beat the pants off Joe Barry. ATL came out passing against a stout run defense, faked JB out and got him to switch, then ran against a good pass D. JB didn't adjust but just laid down for whatever Jerry Grey wanted to do because of course he would.

Our players are so good that it wasn't even a problem until the fourth quarter. Imagine if we had coaches nearly as good as our players ...
