Years ago there were some “ givens” in the NFL.. one of the most widely repeated was “ always take the points on the road” for what it was worth.
But there is no excuse that can be made for Campbell in the 4th quarter.
That was open and shut. Down one score , about 6 MINUTES LEFT. Are you kidding???
1. You might not get the ball back at all
2. You might get it back down two scores and about two minutes left.. exactly what happened
3. If nothing else , you hadn’t had a positive in the entire quarter. Tying the game would have put pressure on SF too.
I think Campbell was very short on the situational awareness. Maybe he thought there was 12 minutes left.
