Nelson, Cook, Lang and a Bevy of Other Packers To Start Camp On PUP

ESPN reports that several key Packers will start training camp on the sideline in shorts.

Demovsky has the somewhat depressing news:

Jordy Nelson, Jared Cook, Sam Barrington, T.J. Lang, Corey Linsley and Ty Montgomery all will start training camp on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, per a source. They won't be on the field for tomorrow morning's first practice.

Obviously, this is less than ideal news. McCarthy wouldn't talk about inuries at his press conference this morning, but something tells me he won't be able to avoid doing so tomorrow.

For the record, there are two physically unable to perform lists. This is the training camp one. If a player is placed on the regular season PUP, he is unable to practice for six weeks. The players listed above can practice whenever they are cleared by the medical staff.

I've resigned myself to the fact that barrington and montgomery are probably not going to be real contributors this year. At least not any time before November. Hence the additions of McCray and Davis.

Nelson is definitely a surprise considering the talk of how he could be playing months ago... right.

Not too concerned about Cook or Linsley. Lang could be a problem.

Nelson, Barrington and Montgomery injuries were 9-11 months ago. have to wonder if there were setbacks... more fodder for those who are skeptical of the training staff.

Well now do we keep 7 WR its possible and wow how much fun and camp has not even started yet. Its a good thing we have time but boy Nelson better just be a precaution thing I do not like this at all.

There is no reason to rush Jordy back, even if he is currently 100%.

WKUP.... I don't call one year a rush for anything. The fact that this was a non contact injury does NOT bode well. Some players NEVER recoup from this injury and/or return to their former capabilities.

AP was an anomaly.

All the chatter about which receivers are gong to be cut I suspect will soon be moot when it becomes obvious that we have been fed PR releases as to Nelson and Montgomery's condition.

It was only weeks ago that Nelson was saying that he could have played in the SB if we would have made it to the big party.

Now all of a sudden the Packers are saying: "his recovery is ahead of schedule..."

Now it shouldn't take a turnip to figure out something stinks in Green Bay...and it isn't Limburger cheese.

Sorry, but it just never ceases to amaze me how quickly people jump to wild conclusions and assume that there must be some nefarious conspiracy that is intended to cruelly deceive them. That evil Packer PR department is lying again! Something stinks!

Er... It's the OTHER knee. Most guys have two of them...

Maaaan, did that last paragraph calm me down! Wooo! I was thinking there was only 1 PUP list.

I'm not surprised those names were mentioned. I'm guessing most of them are on Training Camp PUP just as a precautionary. All of them are vets (minus Ty, who can't run and/or make the necessary cuts in routes) so there's no need to rush the rest back.

Not surprised at all with the extra preseason game. However, come game 3, some of these guys need to be seen doing something other than modeling sideline shorts. : )

I'm not to concerned yet about the pup list.

The injury i'm probably mostly concerned with is Montgomery. His injury was a lot more severe then most thought when it happened. During the offseason he was my biggest concern as far as injuries go.

Nelson, I'm hoping they are just being conservative with.

I hear you on Ty. He was just starting to look good. It sure would be nice to have a settled KR as well.

Now back to Jordan Rodgers on the Bachelorette (yes, i hate myself). Will file a review if anyone else wants to self-report their interest.

I now it's pointless to ask but would it do any good to suggest if 2 of the 3 happen you'll go away. I know lost a bet or challenge before and were gone for a while, but for whatever reason you reneged on your word and came back.

May we suggest a similar challenge only this time the ban is for say 5 years and a vote would be necessary to come back at that time. Just a thought, one I'm sure many would favor.

Have to agree. The team's success Always seems based on certain assumptions being true. Like last year when everyone thought the WR group had enough depth to overcome Nelson loss. Or the never ending hope the ILB group will suddenly improve. Or that Lacy will lose weight. At least be willing to accept the "what if this doesn't happen like we hope" scenario. Which for 2016 seems very real given the unexpected roster on the PUP.

I'm with you on Monty RC, both of us really like this guy. I've read on MOST sites he'll be hard pressed not to start the season on the PUP list. If that's what's going to happen, the Packers keeping 6 vs 7 Wide receivers would seem to sort it's self out. My biggest problem is Montgomery is probably the 3rd best WR on the roster, they'd miss what he brings to the offense more than the others. I keep thinking of all the stuff they run with Cobb in the backfield then insert Montgomery. I think the running plays would be more successful for sure, plus Cobb being the smaller of the two isn't taking the shots he was last year. Montgomery is a better fit for those plays and I'd believe he has the body to hold up better.

Jezzzz.... Not even the 1st practice and already it's started.

Yeah we have both been very high on him.

Ever since last year ended he was the player I was most concerned with in starting the season. It is early so say he won't be on the 53 to start the season, with the extra preseason game they could be just holding these guys out an extra week or 2 to make sure they are fully recovered. But he is still the player I am most concerned with.
Montgomery to me is the x factor in our offense. He is the one player that adds a new dimension to the team. I think he maybe better at RB then Cobb is, plus Cobb can stay in the slot when Montgomery would be in the backfield.

I'm not to concerned right now just because its very early. But If these players on the pup list don't start practicing in a couple of weeks, i think it maybe time to start worrying a bit.

I have got to think this is just an ultra conservative MM approach. Ill wait to see but Im sick of starting seemingly every year with a surprise about someone that we were led to believe was fully recovered only to learn now has a new setback. Fingers tripled crossed on Montgomery in particular. Jordy I dont even want to think about

2 more roster spots opened up.

Packers released RB Don Jackson and DE BJ McBryde.

Always take anything MM says about injuries with a grain of salt. Still, NFL teams are very conservative about allowing players who have had an injury to practice, because the moment they participate in practice, they are ineligible for the PUP list.

Thanks. I don't expect to see either Nelson or Monty on the practice field until the medical staff is pretty darn sure they are good to go for the long haul. Same with the others not practicing. I'd far prefer to be able to put both on PUP and get them back say week 9 or so than let them practice and then have a setback, and put both on IR. In the latter case, we could only bring back one of them; and of course, someone else might get hurt and have to go on IR - remembering that teams are only allowed to recall one player from IR for the season. At least teams no longer have to designate which player is to be recalled from IR when the move is made.

Cook is also dealing with an injury. One more injury at receiver, and I think the Packers are on the horn with James Jones.

What if:

Nelson is less than 100%
Montgomery is placed on 6 week PUP
Janis still can't run routes
Adams continues to underperform
Cook doesn't recover quickly from his foot injury

The receiving and tight end corps are beginning to look like major weaknesses.

Too soon. They've only had a couple practices. We know how cautious the Packers are with their players and their rehab (and status). They have a better feel for these guys right now than any of us do. If these guys really were in danger of missing large chunks of regular season time, then I think you would see the Packers moving pieces.
