Hello Wisconsin: The Packers’ Biggest Weakness Is...

The Packers need a new punter, pronto.

The Green Bay Packers’ second preseason contest had a little less of a buzz to it without an appearance by Jordan Love.

Third-stringer Kurt Benkert made the most of his opportunity in Love’s absence, playing well though also demonstrating his limitations. There’s a possibility Benkert makes it on to the 53 as a third quarterback, but it likely depends on what the Packers do for depth at other positions (such as wide receiver).

With only one preseason game to go, even the untrained eye can start to see where the Packers’ biggest weakness lies.

Many might have expected it to be the Packers’ defensive front, or their depth in the secondary or offensive line.

But no--far and away the team’s biggest weakness right now: punter.

For a team that punts as infrequently as the Packers do, that might not seem like much of a concern. And it’s absolutely true that if your punter is your team’s weak link, you’re probably doing pretty darn well with building out your roster.

But if football is a game of inches, you can’t afford to have a punter who costs you dozens of yards every other punt.

Once again, Packer fans have been treated to the maddening inconsistency of JK Scott, the team’s 2018 draft pick out of Alabama. Scott entered the league with a reputation for absolutely crushing his kicks and was seen as a sure-thing prospect at the position.

The Packers, coming off a couple years of rough punting, were apparently enticed by Scott’s credentials and figured a day three pick wasn’t too steep a price to pay.

If the Packers have proven anything over the years, it’s that you’re better off not spending any draft picks on punters at all.

To say Scott has failed to live up to the Packers’ hopes is an understatement. Corey Behnke’s favorite player has made a habit out of shanking the ball into the bench every few snaps he takes.

Will this have a major effect on the regular season? Probably not. But here’s the thing--a single special teams snafu can push the needle in either direction in a tight game.

The Packers already have a recent history of extraordinarily bad special teams. Do they really want to compound the problem by keeping Scott around for another year?

The Packers released Scott’s supposed competition, Ryan Winslow, in the first round of cut downs, so if the Packers bring in a new punter it will be someone off the waiver wire or a street free agent.

But Scott proved once again versus the Jets that he cannot be relied upon to be a consistent NFL punter.

Occasional big-leg bombs are not worth the 20-yard disappointments that Scott produces in equal measure. The Packers would be better served by a punter who is wholly average.

Simply put: the current punter is a liability, and if he remains on the 53-man roster for another season, the odds are much higher than one would like that he will cost the Packers a close game this year by losing the ever-important battle of field position.

What will the Packers do with their wide receivers?

I wrote an article for Game On Wisconsin last week discussing the conundrum the Packers have with their wide receivers--namely, the fact that they have too many talented players at the position to keep on their roster.

Now, this is a great problem to have, especially given all the banshee-like wailing from the fanbase the last couple years about how Brian Gutekunst has managed the position. But it’s still a problem, and the Packers are most likely going to lose at least one player they really like.

You can figure your absolute deadlocks for the roster are five players: Davante Adams, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Allen Lazard, Randall Cobb and Amari Rodgers. After that, what happens really depends on if the Packers intend to keep six receivers or seven.

There is some precedent in recent years for the Packers keeping seven, and I could see them doing it again this year.

Devin Funchess was the obvious standout on family night and during the Packers’ first preseason game against the Texans, but an injury he suffered opened up a bit more competition.

Malik Taylor probably has the next-best chance of being the sixth man in, and probably the best chance of being a seventh. Taylor has played well on offense, and also has something the other six aforementioned players do not have: special teams acumen. Taylor has operated as a return man, and has taken snaps as a gunner on the punt team. He’s certainly a better special teams option than a guy like Reggie Begelton.

Begelton, meanwhile, is almost certainly not going to make the roster. Juwann Winfree had a strong start to camp, but an injury basically ruined his chances of making the 53. I expect him to be on the practice squad.

This is probably the end of the road for Equanimeous St. Brown, who showed flashes his rookie year but never really got back to form after his injury and is just lost on the depth chart with all these other talented players around him.

If I’m going to make a prediction, I’ll say the Packers keep seven, and both Funchess and Taylor make the roster.

Wisconsin Beer of the Week

This week’s brew is from Young Blood Beer Company, a great up-and-coming brewery in Madison.

I’ve had a bunch of their beers on tap around Milwaukee and have been seeing their cans pop up more in distribution at places like Woodman’s. This summer I had the opportunity to visit their tap room for the first time. It’s just off the capitol square in Madison, and is a great little space with a nice patio and some delicious food options. Highly recommend if you’re looking for a good place to crush a few beers next time you’re in town there.

Anyway, this particular golden beverage is Different Styles, Different Kyles. About the name, here’s what the description says:

“Here at YB we arrange our beers into 1) things that are sour, 2) things that are hoppy and 3) Kyle beers. It is mildly more nuanced than that, but not by much. This is a Kyle beer. We subtly dry hop this lager with Summit to accentuate the grassy spice present in the rye portion of the mashbill. Kyle says we all should be drinking more lagers.”

I can tell you that this one went great with a bowl of popcorn and some Xbox the other night.

I’m a big fan of rye as a malt base, especially in lagers like this as it adds a bit more flavor complexity. The dry hopping wasn’t too much--it added some good aroma and brought out the flavor without creating a beer that was hopped like a pale ale.

Like I said, this one’s more complex than you’d imagine for a lager style. Style crisp and crushable at 5 percent, but there’s more going on here than you’ll find in a standard macro lager.

This would be a great beer for people who are just expanding their palate and looking into more craft brews.

A Kamal Martin surprise

As I was putting this piece together, the Packers announced they released 2020 5th-round pick Kamal Martin in a surprise move.

I was quite surprised Martin didn’t at least get to final cuts, let alone the 53. While Martin certainly looked lost at some moments in 2020, there were also a lot of flash plays where it looked like he had a real shot at developing into something.

But something happened to Martin this offseason, and he just never progressed the way he should have. The team tried him at outside linebacker earlier this offseason and he couldn’t catch on there, and he was apparently outplayed by at least four other inside linebackers as well.

It is disappointing--Martin was one of the few 2020 draft picks to get some good action on the field last season. At the very least, he always brought a ton of energy.

But on the bright side, the 2020 draft class is poised to take on a larger role this year. AJ Dillon will be getting a lot more carries, Josiah Deguara is going to be a crucial utility figure in this offense, and of course, Jordan Love is a year away from taking the reins of the offense.

DITCH THE WAVE ALREADY.

On Monday afternoon, Matt LaFleur once again brought up the fact that Packer fans continue to do the wave while the team is on offense.

Chalk it up to it being preseason, or a gold package crowd, or whatever, but it’s no less than embarrassing for a franchise entering its 103rd season that the team still apparently needs to train fans on how to be quiet when the team is on offense.

This is far from the first time over the last several years that LaFleur, Aaron Rodgers or someone else on the team have begged fans to be quiet and cut out the wave while the team is on offense.

The response from a certain subsection of fans is going to be “I paid for the ticket so I can do what I want!” Which, I guess, sure, but would you rather your actions in the stand contribute to the team’s chances of winning, or make it harder on them?

It’s basic fan etiquette. Plenty of other fanbases around the league have gotten this down without it being a big deal. It has only elevated the experience of attending a game in those stadiums, and has significantly enhanced the mystique or challenge associated with visiting teams playing there.

The uncomfortable fact is that while the Packers pre-game fan experience outside and around the stadium is second to none, the in-stadium fan experience during the games is lacking in comparison to some of the other top-flight franchises in the league.

When players and coaches are lamenting fans’ knowledge of when to be quiet or loud, it’s a problem. There has also been a years-long problem with the stadium not getting loud enough on defense, especially in crucial situations.

Hopefully this year with the return of fans in the stadium after a full year gone, the energy level will be amped up and people will be ready to be a part of the game action, rather than detracting from it.

Offensive line the big mystery

If punting is the biggest weakness and wide receiver is the most competitive position, offensive line is differently the biggest mystery at the moment.

Some of the mystery is aided by the absence of David Bakhtiari to start the season. With Elgton Jenkins playing outside in the meantime, that leaves two guard positions up for grabs.

Right now, it sounds like Royce Newman is in the lead for a starting guard position, which would be a heck of an achievement for the rookie.

Today at practice, Newman started at left guard and Lucas Patrick at right guard.

Patrick had some rough moments in 2020, but has a lot of game experience at multiple positions, which is valuable for the Packers to have around while waiting for Bakhtiari’s return. Jon Runan Jr. also still has a shot at getting some playing time.

The starting lineup certainly isn’t set--there’s some competition happening at that guard spot, and once Bakhtiari returns it will be interesting to see who goes back to the bench while Jenkins shifts over to his left guard spot.

If Newman does indeed get the nod, the Packers will have two rookie offensive linemen (Newmjan and Josh Myers at center) starting at the same time for the first time since 2000, when Chad Clifton and Mark Tauscher started their long and successful careers as bookends at the tackle positions.

Fall Creep: the newest answer to Christmas Creep

You might have heard of Christmas Creep, the idea that the “holiday season” gets started earlier every year for marketers and businesses. You might hear Christmas music playing on the radio in early November, or see stores putting up their Christmas decorations as soon as Halloween is over.

The same thing is starting to happen generally with the fall season.

Pumpkin spice lattes. Oktoberfest and pumpkin beers. They’re showing up earlier than usual every year. Several breweries near me had their Oktoberfests out before July was even over!

This is very much an “old man yells at cloud” sort of moment for me, but I gotta say… I love fall. I love the weather, I love the smell of the leaves, I love the food, I love Thanksgiving, and most of all, I love football.

But let us have summer! The warm weather is so fleeting, especially here in Wisconsin! At least wait until September 1st to bust out all the autumnal goodness!

Bah humbug!

That’s all for today folks, a bit of an abbreviated column. Once the regular season starts up there’ll be a whole lot more to discuss, but in the meantime… good luck to all the bubble players in the final days before roster cut downs!

With Kamal Martin being chucked I’m beginning to think the Packers are going to stick with Burks! “When will they ever learn?” Thanks, Since ‘61

He was terrible on Saturday. He wasn’t being asked to blitz but play ILB. Burks still has zero football instinct.

I agree, but this could be a mix of positive and negative news '61.

The negative is obviously they are admitting a miss in the 5th round and Martin looked utterly lost playing ILB.

The positive is this, Gute is admitting a mistake and cutting bait. This is good. My biggest gripe of the FO for years, being a draft and develop team, they have a tendency, especially under TT to hold onto their picks for too long. ALL companies, even the great ones make mistakes, poor investments, hire wrong people, failed product launches. But they identify the problem quickly and make a change. All GMs have misses in the draft, but admit the mistake and move on rather than pounding a square into a round hole.

I don't get Burks, rarely do players miraculously become quality starters in year 4....I don't see it with him, they seem to be forcing him to work somewhere. hope I am wrong

Bure - I agree that it’s good to cut bait on Martin but I would say the same for Burks. It’s still early and Burks could still be cut also. Maybe the coaching staff believes that he can be effective on STs.

We’ll know soon enough either way. Thanks, Since ‘61

Martin had coaches saying he needs to prove he deserves a spot. That is pretty standard coach speak for a player in the coaches’ bad books. Looks like someone wanted him gone. Hollman fell out of favor mid last year too and is also gone. Both had done positive things in the past. Martin looks very like a younger Burks on D and ST. You normally cut the older not the younger.

Last year they kept Burks as an OLB where he failed dismally. This year they claim he’s suddenly competent at ILB. He actually graded out no better than Martin and looked just as lost (both PFF and the eye test support that). It looks to me that the coaches wanted Martin gone for some non football reason, Hollman too and potentially Sternberger.

Rather than Gute letting go, this is him not letting go of a bust in favor of jettisoning a player who was younger and in his first camp, seemingly at the coaches request. I hope the reasons are justified.

There will be 29 players cut in the next 8 days, and I would not consider Burks to be a lock. Martin was cut because of his knee injuries and terrible game against the Jets. Also, it appears he did not fit into Barry's scheme. Burks may or may not fit, and still a couple of players ahead of him.

I certainly hope you're right with Funchess and M. Taylor making the team, although I don't think it's in the cards for the latter to be a return man. And in retrospect, the Cobb signing might have not been such a bad idea, as Amari looks like he's going to need to little work.

Crowd noise: Could be the old chicken and egg paradox: the better the defense gets, the louder the noise; seeing and believing really jacks up the enthusiasm....

Punter woes: There are a lot more JK Scott loyalists here than I ever imagined. An inconsistent and unreliable punter will absolutely cost us at some time, as will a leaky ST coverage unit--you can bank on it. Gute needs to get a couple more punters in here for a tryout, and the front office has to be keeping an eye on the entire ST unit in general. Mr. Scott has had three years to improve his consistency; maybe some fresh coaching will help him out, but I'm skeptical.

How does a guy go from "can't miss" to below average?

Does College Football allow use of personal balls for kicking? Could they have been filled with an air-helium mixture at "Bama? Could they be extra wide to help avoid mis-hits?

...and what in the world is with the patty-cake half assed attempts at tackling? Grow a pair and have just a smidgen of pride or PLEASE just quit and walk away. It is an embarrassment to the entire team, front office and fans.

It's just not Scott's inconsistency at punting the ball, he is terrible when it comes to tackling, on STs, as well. I don't know what happened to him once he got to the Pros, but what ever it was, it affected him badly. The Packers's punting units, IMO, have been dismal, since they let Craig Hentrich walk. Here's hoping they find an answer at Punter, soon!

With Jackson traded for yah-dum(cut-me-now) and Hollman traded, it sure looks like Ento can start looking for lodging in the GB area.

Even with Martin axed (and chucked) it may be that Barnes, Campbell, Summers, Wilborn and McDuffie are all ahead of Burks. The Turk will tell the tale... sometimes getting preseason snaps are the reason why a guy says bye, not the reason the team keeps him, there is a history here.

Shame to hear about Martin. He was very raw, but he looked like a possible day 1 starter in the abbreviated camp last year with some really good physical tools.

It's entirely possible he ends up back on the Packers PS and has the time he may need to clean up his technique, but it's also possible the Packers want that last ILB to literally just be a heat seeking middle, which Burks looks like he can be.

Yeah, I thought Martin would develop into a solid LB for us. Not the case, I guess. Wondering if next year an ILB will get a long hard look at, by Gute and Co., when the draft, or FA, comes around.

"If the Packers have proven anything over the years, it’s that you’re better off not spending any draft picks on punters at all."

The Packers clearly wanted a punter in 2018, and w/the 150th pick in the 4th round, the Pack were set to pick Michael Dickson. But the Seahawks traded up to 149 and picked Dickson, who has gone on to become an Pro Bowl punter. The Pack traded out of the 150th pick, then got their 2nd choice @ pick 172 in the 5th. So yes, drafting a punter is ok, just as long as you get the guy you wanted.....

Re asking fans to be quiet on offense…….. really!!!!

What happens when they play the Seahawks or chiefs at their home stadiums?……..oh, yes, that’s right……..

To me this is an open invitation when the Packers go on the road for opposing fans to scream like they’re fighting for their lives - and validation that the 12th man at centurylink is legit.

I’d take it as a sign MLF to improve the comms.

Martin was a surprise. He'll find a job. The trade of Kadar Hollman is exactly the answer at WR. Yes --- Scott gets cut when a veteran becomes available. And If two Rookies can start on this OL. The packers are going to have problems. I'd keep the veterans. I'm not giving up on Patrick or Runyan at all. I still clearly think, RT needs someone else behind Turner. MLF- Are you becoming soft? Let the fans party.

Scott holds for Crosby. I strongly doubt that they will willingly mess with that at this point. Crosby is much more important than a punter upgrade. If they were serious we’d have been having Crosby working out a holder expected to be on the 53. I’ve not heard a whisper of that so I think it’s pretty much going to take injury to force a change. They could sign one waived at cut down to the PS and start him or another working with Crosby to keep the pressure on.

"Packers biggest weakness a punter." ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME ???
Are you looking at the same packer team that I am? If packers don't bring in a real name on either the D line or D linebacker we are dancing to the band on deck or rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. Clark need to come back healthy, that is a question mark and there is promising news in the rookie Slaton but he is a rookie and that is putting a lot of weight on him. Other than that who is the stopper before getting in the secondary???? The Packers need in this area is huge. The defense ability to get them off the field is the glaring sore spot.

This is one of my favorite articles on CHTV. But, I'm sorry, after spending hundreds of dollars to bring your family to a game at Lambeau, maybe a once in a lifetime experience for many....and you want them to sit on their hands and show no emotion and be quiet when the team is on offense?

Aaron Rodgers is a proponent of this? I hate to admit it, but I'm losing more and more respect for this guy. Figure out how to win a NFCC game and don't worry about nonsense like the fans having fun while paying for your salary.

Of course I agree. Yet, this is (for many) the only chance many fans had at attending a game. Season tickets are hoarded by some and sold at the highest price often to opposing fans. There is a wait list of a hundred years for any new fans. The ones in the stands these last couple of games may be the only experience they will get. So I cut them some slack.

So we're going into the regular season with a rookie center and possibly a rookie guard; plus the other guard is going to be new as a starter; and Jenkins is at tackle instead of guard until Bakh comes back.
With all of these moving parts, I would think it important to play the expected starters for game one of the regular season in the last game of the preseason. It's not just about the individual performances, but the line as a unit.
Another good reason is that Josh Myers at center is calling the signals for the line as a rookie, so the other blockers have to get used to him.
This would seem important for protecting Aaron Rodgers -- not to mention him not getting tripped up by a lineman in the backfield ;-).
Rodgers has been seriously injured in the second regular-season game of 2017, and the opener of 2018. I don't know if either had to do with him and the offensive line not being in sync, but it's worth considering.
Being overly careful in life is also a risk.
For Rodgers and our best linemen to be playing together for the first quarter in this last preseason game against the Bills seems to me a worthwhile risk in the interest of getting prepared for the much more unpredictable and unrestrained defenses of the regular season.
It would also be incentive for Rodgers to get the ball out quickly, which is a good habit for him to develop more fully at age 37. (I may be critical of him, but do wish him well.)
Of course Rodgers is firm on not playing, and that's that. He's just so exceedingly savvy, and his latest MVP has exalted him to a level at which he deserves the utmost deference. Moreover, who would dare question him at the risk of incurring his petulant wrath?
Even with Rodgers having removed himself from the preseason, I'd still like to see our best linemen out there for the first quarter

Pretty sure it is a coaching decision. AR played without benefit of any snaps in preseason games last year, and played well. Is dislike of AR might be clouding your judgment? I have no particular desire to see AR play. Now, getting the projected starter on the OL some snaps together seems like a better argument as cohesion is important, but the coaches probably have to figure out which five those are.

I'm angry with Rodgers, but don't dislike him. I've been a huge fan of his, and to some degree still am. I truly want the best for him as a player and a person.
To me, that means not letting him getting away with being a diva. I don't understand why other fans get mad at me -- or at least say I'm against Rodgers -- when it's Rodgers who has left us hanging by holding out on the team, then coming back to trash our front office as a seemingly pathetic and cruel tactic to justify himself.
It was a pouty and stupid stunt that has risked a season ripe for a Super Bowl -- and I don't see how fans let that slide so easily, especially as Rodgers seems to have no regrets as to how he has treated others.
***
I do sincerely think he should be playing a little in the preseason (about a quarter per game) to get a good rhythm with his offensive line. I think that makes him less likely to get injured in the first month of the regular season due to breakdowns in blocking.
Last season, no teams had a preseason, so all of them were equally unprepared for the regular season. It was all the same, and unique.
***
It would be interesting to learn about how other teams handle the preseason for veteran quarterbacks and other top players.
That would seem to be a good topic for CHTV to take on for perspective on the value of the preseason. The matter could be revisited in a month or so to see how various teams started the season as far as performance and injuries.
Also, none of the staff at CHTV, nor the fans here, have taken up my question of whether the claims of Rodgers that the front office has mistreated players holds up to scrutiny.
As I've noted, Rodgers signed his most recent contract in 2018 without protest after some of the acts of heartlessness in his accusations had apparently taken place.
To falsely portray the front office as cold and calculating is not only terribly unfair to their reputations as professionals, but as people.
It also drags down the Packers as an attractive organization.
All this isn't about me disliking Rodgers. It's about how much Rodgers cares about the fans and the people he has worked with for years, including the front office and his teammates. He was willing to abandon us. What would happen even now if he was offered the hosting job at Jeopardy?
What would happen if his head coach asked him to play a little football this Saturday against the Bills, or if Randall Cobb was cut?

Ever since TT cut Ryan because his then genius special teams co-ordinator didnt like the way that he was stepping into the ball, And maybe because I am Canadian and Ryan is Canadian . He had his best year with the Packers and was the best punter that the Pack had had for a long time but got cut. Mike Stock and Shawn Slocum - were not that good and of course Ryan had 10 great years with Seattle. Go figure. Now I am not a fan of drafting a punter up high - Ray Guy?? But we need to have a competition and of course the punter holds on the place kicker - so there are other things to consider. But it the new coaches cant work this out - then maybe Drayton isnt the "guy" and from what we have seen in the preseason- the jury is still out on special teams and our co-ordinator. And Lafleur better know that bad special teams can get a H coach fired.

The biggest weaknesses may turn out to be not players but coaches. Barry is hired based on... what?... his friendship with MLF? And desperate for a ST coach they hire a guy in Drayton who has never been a coordinator but was part of last year's terrible special teams staff. They may be the biggest question marks on this team.

Rizzo is sure looking like a far bigger mistake by the FO than any butt-hurt AR crap.

What about Ben Braden at one of the tackle spots to keep Jenkins or Turner next to Meyers. Could be a little concerning having 2 rookies and say Runyon basically a first year starter all on the inside.

I sure would like to see Dennis Kelly play well since I thought his signing was something close to pure genius. We shall see. If not Kelly, another good showing by Braden would be nice to see.

I hate to say this, but it sure looks as if Kelly got a paycheck and sat in the rocking chair.

I also hope for the best.

It just might be that "the best" is that Yosh Nijman has shown solidity at the tackle position and could be a serviceable swing if thats what Kellys performance dictates.

"It's a good competition" at guard, LaFleur says. Points to Braden, Patrick and Newman as playing well vs. Jets. Also says Nijman "has put himself in a pretty good position." Huber

Kelly has been worse than Braden and Nijman. I’m wondering if he was carrying a knock. We’re it not for last year I’d say cut him. Then again, he signed for what seemed very little. Something just doesn’t add up.

As a season ticket holder, my response to MLF’s totally freakin’ lame wave comment? Cram it up your cramhole, La Fleur!

And here we have an example of an entitled non-fan who actively tries to sabotage the Green and Gold by making it next to impossible to communicate on the field.

Move over Eagles, there's a new worst fanbase in the NFL apparently.

Special teams is the biggest weakness. Allowing big returns in the kicking game can be a game changer. It gives the opposing team a shorter field and allowing them easier opportunities to score. Poor return yardage by the Packers needs to improve to allow the team better opportunities to score as well. And the punting game needs to be consistent. Field position in a tight game can mean the difference between a victory or a defeat. To many times a scoring drive by the Packers is offset by allowing a big kick return on the ensuing kickoff. Or bad punt coverage allows the opposing team to get better field position. The Packers were very close to the bottom of the heap in special teams play last season. An unfavorable position for a championship caliber team.
