Hello Wisconsin: From Here, It’s All Gravy

The Packers have exceeded expectations, and everything from here on out is just extra.

The GREEN BAY PACKERS ARE IN THE PLAYOFFS IN THE FIRST YEAR OF THE JORDAN LOVE ERA.

No matter how many times I say or read that this week, it never gets old.

It cannot be overstated how big of a deal this is. This was not something that was *supposed* to happen. The Packers were supposed to spend this season languishing around six wins and hope for the improvement to come next year with a possible playoff berth while they “figured it out” this season.

That whole process has suddenly shifted a year forward, and it’s almost entirely because of the rapid development of the young offense.

The Packers finished the year ranked sixth (!) by DVOA on offense (near the bottom of the league on defense and special teams), and that’s INCLUDING that rough October stretch. This became one of the most efficient offenses in football.

Of course, you have to give a lot of credit to the young pass catchers who saw dramatic improvement from the start of the year. Guys like Jayden Reed, Dontayvion Wicks, and Romeo Doubs have all been key figures in the offense all year. Tucker Kraft went from being nearly unplayable due to his blocking to be a very well-rounded tight end by the end of the year who’s only just starting to find himself in this league. Bo Melton came out of absolutely nowhere to provide the Packers with another unexpectedly solid receiving option, and even Malik Heath has been getting in on the action.

If the Packers can get Christian Watson and Luke Musgrave back on the field, that will only add to the bevy of pass catching options the team has available.

Then you’ve got outstanding offensive line performances by Zach Tom (6th rated offensive tackle in football this season) and Rasheed Walker (who came on TREMENDOUSLY in the second half of the season) that give the team something to build on moving forward.

But by far the two most important people for the team’s offensive performance in the second half of the season: running back Aaron Jones, and quarterback Jordan Love.

The offense has been better than ever this season since Jones returned, rushing for 100 yards three weeks in a row to close out the season and to provide some much-needed balance to the offense. Jones’s energy and ability to grind out tough yards in tight situations makes him an invaluable part of the offense, and his contributions to the passing game cannot be overvalued. He’s earned a spot on this team again next year when many assumed he’d be cut for cap purposes.

And then, of course, Jordan Love.

Love has been nothing short of spectacular in the second half of the season, playing at an All Pro level. We’re talking 20 total touchdowns and a single interception in the last eight weeks. By any measure he has been at minimum a top five quarterback in that span, and probably better than that. He’s shown the capability already to play at an MVP level. Now we get years ahead to see if he can consistently play like that over the course of a full season.

Love has dramatically improved his accuracy and decision making. He’s making throws off every conceivable platform, and playing within rhythm in the offense. He’s using every available receiving option in a way his predecessor avoided entirely for the last several years of his time in Green Bay.

You cannot say enough good things about Love’s progression and what he’s done to get to this point. And boy, was it ever refreshing to see a quarterback have a great performance in a “gotta have it” game this past weekend.

From here, the Packers are playing with house money. No matter what happens moving forward, it’s almost impossible to be upset about it. The Packers have found their quarterback, and he’s already showing signs of excellence. They’ve got a young offensive core that’s only going to continue getting better. If they can get a real defensive coordinator, they’ve got plenty of talent on that side of the ball that can be set up in positions to succeed.

The future is bright in Green Bay.

For the present, let’s just see what happens and enjoy it. Because it looks like another fun ride is about to begin.

Wisconsin Beer of the Week

Every now and then, a milk stout really hits the spot. Sweat, relatively light, low alcohol, easy to drink, goes down smooth.

I was at the liquor store the other day and realized it had been a long time since I’d had Polish Moon, which is Milwaukee Brewing Company’s flagship milk stout. But since MKE Brewing is now under the umbrella of Eagle Park, I’m not sure they even make it any more. Which is sad, because it was always my favorite MKE beer.

The good news is they DID have a milk stout by Raised Grain Brewing Company, which is based in Waukesha. It’s called Udderly Perfect, which is, well, an “udderly” perfect name for a milk stout.

Here’s how the company describes the 5.1 ABV sipper:

“”Rich, smooth, and creamy, this milk stout has superb balance and drinkability. It’s time to do some cow tipping.”

Simple, no frills, tastes great. Exactly what you want out of the style. Check it out!

My experience in the Champions Club suites

So I had an incredible and rare opportunity come out of nowhere this past week. On Friday, a friend of mine texted me and said that his wife just happened to get four club level tickets for the Packers/Bears game for free through her work. He invited me to come along with him, his dad, and a friend of his.

I soon found out it was for the Champions Club, which is located in the new section of the south endzone, directly under the massive scoreboard.

The experience was incredible; there were all kinds of food stations (charcuterie, brats and sausages, salmon, shrimp cocktail, ramen, nachos, fish tacos, carving stations, dessert, candy), a couple full bars, nice bathrooms, tables all over the place, great stadium seating with comfortable chairs, and most importantly, a FANTASTIC view of the field. You’re on top of everything with panoramic views, able to see the all-22 look of the play live as it unfolds.

Before the game started, we were able to get up to the rooftop deck and get right underneath the flyover during the national anthem. The views from up there were breathtaking; you could see for miles all around the stadium.

I will say that I will always go for the bowl seats when I have the chance, because the atmosphere down there is exactly what I’m looking for out of my Packers experience. I want to be among the passes screaming my face off and high fiving with others (while old folks tell me to sit down).

I was, however, pleasantly surprised that the people up in the suite were still quite into the action of the game. I was expecting it to have a more stale, corporate feel, and that wasn’t the case.

It was weird, of course, to have a lot of the noise separated from us because we were behind large glass panels that do not open. It was cool, though, to hear the live radio call playing exactly as the plays were happening.

Ultimately, it was a pretty incredible experience that I’ll probably never have again, because those tickets are HELLA expensive. Even though I’d always make the bowl my first option, this is definitely an experience you should jump at if you ever have the opportunity, like I did, to get in there on someone else’s dime (especially a company’s).

Around the NFC North

As always, it’s time to go around the NFC North.

  • The CHICAGO BEARS have apparently decided that they are going to retain head coach Matt Eberflus (10-24 in two years as head coach) but fire the offensive staff, including coordinator and former Packers quarterbacks coach Luke Getsy. After the year this Bears team has had and the trajectory the team has been on the last couple years, it’s hard to imagine why the team would want to run it back. Presumably if they’re bringing back Eberflus, that means they’re also going to give Justin Fields another year rather than trying their hand with Caleb Williams, unless they’re going to do the moronic thing again of giving a top draft pick a lame duck head coach. The fact that the Bears are willing to hold on to Eberflus despite coaches like Jim Harbaugh, Mike Vrabel, Bill Belichick and more all being available or potentially available is really an indictment on this franchise.

  • The DETROIT LIONS will host their first postseason game in 30 years this weekend, and it’s hard to imagine anyone feels as though they’re a team to fear in the playoffs. The Rams are red hot coming into the game, and with Matthew Stafford getting the start against his former team, this is certain to be a raucous atmosphere. It just doesn’t feel as though the Lions have the defense necessary to deal with the Rams’ aerial attack. The Lions may be somewhat back to relevance, but I just don’t see them getting into the second weekend of the playoffs.

  • The MINNESOTA VIKINGS are officially in their offseason, in which they will need to make some difficult decisions about the future of their franchise. The most prominent decision, of course, is how they will handle the quarterback position moving forward. Do they bring back Kirk Cousins on a short-term deal, or explore the unknown? You almost feel like they have to get cousins back if they have any intention of competing next year, and then hopefully find a potential heir apparent in the draft as soon as possible. But all year long it felt inevitable that the Vikings would be turning over the page on the Cousins era. They’ve really bungled things for themselves by not taking the Packers’ approach of drafting a quarterback before they absolutely needed one.

Bets and receipts for Bears week: revisited

Oh my goodness was it ever delicious to spend the time after the game revisiting all of the things people were saying about the Packers and Jordan Love before the season started.

So many Bears fans who were convinced that Love would be trash and that their team was going to be ascending to the top of the league.

So many PACKER fans who had no hope that Love would ever be any good, or who had given up on him less than halfway through the season when the team hit a rough patch.

So few people nationally thought the Packers had a prayer of sniffing the playoffs this year. Pundits and fans alike were having their old takes exposed all night long on Twitter. It was truly a sight to behold.

As I was saying earlier, the Packers have already exceeded expectations. Anything else from here is gravy.

But a lot of the haters have a good, hearty helping of crow to eat. And we love to see that.

THIS or THAT in Mr. Backes’s room: Week 19 Update

As I’ve done the last several weeks, I’m going to give a quick update as to the latest THIS or THAT polls in my classroom.

Without further ado:

  • Snow days without snow defeated snow days with snow (we had a snow day without snow)
  • Billie Elish defeated Olivia Rodrigo
  • Beaches defeated mountains
  • Hot chocolate defeated tea

If you have additional THIS or THAT prompts you’d like to poll my high schoolers with, give your ideas in the comments! I’ve pulled a few from the comments so far.

Predictions for Packers vs. Cowboys and Wild Card Weekend

There is not a single outcome of this weekend’s game that would surprise me. I could see anything happening, from the Cowboys beating the snot out of the Packers to the Packers coming out and delivering a surprise multi-score upset.

I think the actual result falls somewhere in between there, and as the week goes on, I’m starting to feel more and more as though the Packers could actually pull off the massive upset.

The Cowboys have not been playing as strong of defense as they had been to start the year, while the Packers’ offense has been incredibly efficient of late, especially since the return of Aaron Jones. I actually quite like the matchup the Packers have against the Cowboys’ defense, and if Christian Watson is able to get back into the lineup it adds a potentially explosive element they can use, if even as a decoy.

The big issue is, of course, going to be the Packers’ defense against the Cowboys’ offense. To win, they’re going to have to be able to withstand a really excellent passing attack from Dallas, a passing offense that’s better than any they’ve seen this year.

Ultimately, I’m going out on a limb and trusting my gut and my heart over my head. It just really feels as though the Packers are going to shock everyone while they’re playing with house money and come out and steal a win. I’m fully willing to admit some homerism is probably causing bias here on my part, but that’s what I’m going to predict, and I’m going to stick with it.

"And probably better than that".... NO Tim, most DEFINITELY better than that. When you consider both of Loves Tackles are in year two. The RG position has been a in flux ever since they FINALLY decided to start working Sean Ryhan into games at RG and earning more and more snaps each week. And even though he's been playing better, Josh Meyers is still a liability IMO. I've watched him look like he was on roller skates too many times.

We also HAVE to consider who Love has been throwing the ball to. I mean common man, these guys are ROOKIES. This ISN'T supposed to happen. The two guys who were supposed to be the calming force in the WR room have either been hurt (Watson) or getting passed up (Doubs) by the promising rookies on this club. Then there's my boy Tucker...I love me some Tucker and I really like Luke Musgrave. I mean common...What a fucking draft HAUL by Gute.

Yes, it's all gravy from this point on. Maybe they pull out a victory or maybe the Cowboys play like they have all season at home and run Joe Barry's defense out of town. EITHER way it doesn't really matter because I've went from will the Packers have a top 5 pick in this upcoming draft, to hardly being able to wait for September 2024.

Coincidentally, I had a delicious Raised Grain Imperial Belgian Stout, “Black Walnut,” last night.

A few things rattling around in my head:
Zach Tom and Rasheed Walker are both under 25, extremely athletic, and playing extremely well. Sean Rhyan is 23. Josh Myers is 26. Elgton Jenkins is the only one (28) who is older than Jordan Love.

Once we get past the injuries, this roster is loaded with young talent at every starting position except safety, and arguably maybe, Campbell at ILB and RB.

I want to highlight that Love is doing great, but he is being helpful tremendously by a group of receivers who are holding on to the ball. During the bad stretch, there were a lot of dropped passes. That changed when they started aggressively catching, and the improvement of the offense happened.

The future is bright on the talent front! The 2023 draft by Gutey and his staff was outstanding.

The addition of young receiver talent has been the most consequential I can recall following the Packers for decades. Watson, Doubs, and Melton (originally 7th rounder/Seahawks) are talented sophomores...and the freshman class of Reed, Wicks, Heath, Musgrave and Kraft is incredible. (Sims look like a keeper too...Deguara is probably #4 now)

MLF has to receive tremendous credit getting these 9 new receivers ready so quickly. And that credit must be shared with WR Coach/pass game coordinator Vrable...and TE Coach Dunn. It helps to have the Offense's Jedi Master Tom Clements creating synergies within the pass game too.

Dallas has a solid pass defense...not as good with run D. This game feels like a heavy dose Infantry to start the battle then launch the Air Force!

McCarthy is under tremendous pressure to win in the Playoffs after getting bounced by the Niners the last two years in the 2021 WC round...and again in 2022 in the Divisional. Jerry Jones is looking over his shoulder!

Homerism is okay Tim...Especially when it's a pretty damn decent possibility of the Packers beating the Cowboys. The Cowboys defense hasn't been nearly as good as it was at the start of the year, and the Packers offense, WITH Aaron Jones involved like he has been has turned the Packers into one of the BEST offenses in the NFL these last 9 weeks or so.

WHY NOT GB???

You really can't ask for more.

Again, like some others have said, just enjoy the ride for the time being.

I did not figure the Packers would get into the playoffs. It was enough for me if the Packers simply improved from week to week. And, mainly, it was seeing if Love would get better.

I pretty much liked Love the first year he was drafted. I liked his quietness, mostly, the silent steady way he went about learning his craft. He kept his mouth shut. Whether or not Love is the franchise quarterback for the future, I do not know.

The game against Dallas should be a great test for the Packers and Love. Will they get their asses whipped? Or will it be a close game?

I agree T7. I'm mentally prepared for a loss in a close game. A young team going on the road against a team that has been a juggernaut at home losing in a close game would be understandable.
The only thing that would put a damper on this season for me, is if the Packers don't show up. That would be a big disappointment after the resilience this team has shown all year.

Any given Sunday.

Control the LOS on O and run the ball at will.

Survive on D and make all the Kicks and we can do this.

Tim, that sounded like an incredible experience in the box. I would probably want to be in the bowl too, because I'd probably get kicked out before the 2nd quarter for spilling beer and swearing.

What a season, so far. Man, I love this current roster of players on the field. So nice to see teamwork and accountability without the arrogance.

Thank you front office for putting down the shovel and letting this season play out...

Like a couple have stated, I am proud of these guys and fortunate to be a fan of the GREEN BAY PACKERS. (Hell, owner too :). I did a great job 😁

Hard to picture the Packers blowing them out, but any other outcome seems quite possible.

Our defense is near the bottom of the league in DVOA but 10th in points allowed, which is the most important statistic. Are they that good? No. They've allowed a lot of yards and have not gotten many turnovers. But they are not terrible, and they are capable of turning in a good performance in this game.

More important than points allowed is WHEN those points are allowed, Greg.

This is where, especially this season, passive Barry Ball falls down. The young offense gave the team lead late in 5 games only to see the defense playing prevent (the win) and producing losses.

Would a more creative, aggressive, synergistic-minded DC won all these games? Probably not. But 2 or 3? I think so.

11-6 or 12-5, could have been the record of the youngest team in the NFL. That's incredible.

McCarthy found, or was forced to find a belief in top Defense and Dallas hired Dan Quinn. Had MLF done so, he'd be a probable shoe in for Coach of the year. Due to the performance of D and STs, I doubt he gets much consideration.

It is sweet to exceed expectations and see the promise that this QB and team has. Spent a lot of years were Dallas owned us and outside our division they were the team to beat. When we finally turned the tables on them there was no better victory than beating the Cowboy especially when Jerry World went up. They have a good team with enough horsepower and experience to be favourites but we keep showing a grit that is beyond our years. If we survive the initial attack we should be able to go toe-to-toe. Either way, I will be happy with a hard fought game where it goes to the wire.

This is exactly why I don't see Barry coming back no matter what happens. The Defense was supposed to carry the team until the offense learned. That didn't happen. And not only that, but then they lose to the Giants and make Divito the offensive player of the week. And then they go against Tampa and Mayfield has his best game of his career. And the next week they give up 30 points and have to come back to win the game up by 2 TD's. The really sad part is the Packers gave up almost as many points to the Panthers as the Panthers scored in weeks 13, 14, 15, 17 & 18 combined. They scored 33 total points in all those games, where the Packers gave up 30 to them.
And while we did look better against the VIkings and Bears, lets not forget that we played against Jaran Hall and Justin FIelds. The style of play was way better, but that part of it can't be overlooked.

If the Packers win the next 3 games to get into the SB with complementary Defense holding leads with aggressive, pressure D...sans the prevent (the win) scheme that Barry has used for 7 years as DC... I suppose a case could be made to give him a new contract.

But short of that metamorphosis, Barry's 3 years of performance MUST be considered in total, not just the 2 game stretch (Ugly Purple and bares) of some "redemption" that followed the 3 SMH games against the Giants, Bucs and nail biter vs the Panthers.

There will be some excellent DC's available to create dominant synergies with all that Packer D talent...synergies Barry doesn't utilize due to his prevent (the win) tunnel vision scheme.

I agree.

And lets not forget the 2 games the defense played good was against a Jaran Hall led team, and a Bears team that just fired its entire offensive staff.

The key to all of this is that Barry's contract expires. Its very easy to just not resign him, rather then "fire" him.

There definitely will be some good DC's available. And honestly, it should be a pretty damn attractive position. We have the HC and offense looking good for the future. We have talent on the defense, with a lot of high draft picks to do some more damage in the draft. So it should be a very attractive spot for people.

"If the Packers can get Christian Watson and Luke Musgrave back on the field, that will only add to the bevy of pass catching options the team has available.

But by far the two most important people for the team’s offensive performance in the second half of the season: running back Aaron Jones, and quarterback Jordan Love."

The part that I like the most is that we are not relying on 1-2 people. The offense is different with Jones. No question. But in the passing game whoever is open gets the ball. That is one of the best things I have seen this year, especially down the stretch. And for the most part those players are making the plays. I can't wait to see how these players develop. Watson, Doubs and Melton all will be entering year 3. Reed, Wicks, Heath, DuBose, Musgrave, Kraft, Sims will be entering year 2. They say the biggest differences players make are between years 1-2 and 2-3. Also Love having a year of experience under his belt should make him better.

We have to give a lot of credit to the OL though. They have really settled in. Walker has honestly made it possibly that we don't take an OT in the first round. Most of the year, we said they had to get one. Now its more. take the best player available. And I believe our OL play has really made the passing game better because Love has felt very comfortable.

Interesting point about Walker RC. I was down on Walker during the first half of the season (and a proponent of Nijman), but Walker has turned that around to the extent that I am also beginning to believe the Packers don't need to draft an OT with their first pick. I wouldn't pass a great OT up, but if there was a better player at safety or ILB I wouldn't mind that choice either.

I do think the Packers need to draft an OT some where in the first three rounds as Bakh and Nijman will likely be gone and Jones, Tenuta and Telfort are huge question marks. I also would like to see some investment in IOL as Myers and Runyon are just okay offensive linemen. At least the Packers have the draft ammunition to address these issues!

Runyon is a free agent this year. His back up is Rhyan. After that there is Newman.

Myers will be in the last year of his rookie deal next year. Behind him is a big question. Runyon seems to be the next man up today, but he may not be back. It could be Tom, but is that the ideal long term solution? The same could be said for Jenkins.

There is potentially a big hole to fill in terms of depth even before one gets to the potential to improve over what we do have at C and G. There’s also the need to restart some kind of pipeline for the IOL.

At T, Nijman will be playing elsewhere, and everyone else is unproven. I truly don’t see Bakh returning. We need to get younger players to develop at T too. We need a capable swing T now. If that’s Walker, we need a high pick LT. If not, we still need some talent added to the mix that can help.

There’s not much on O that requires strengthening outside of the OL, fortunately. We probably need a RB and maybe a developmental perimeter WR with speed. Other than that, it’s D and BPA.

That's what I thought they should look for on day 3 but Melton fills that need. Heath probably sticks as the #6 guy because of his blocking. So maybe a 7th rounder or a couple speed guys to try and develop.

It’s too early to agree on a fix. Our presumptive starters are AVERAGE-ish , and there isn’t any depth. If we want to add a premium LT then we’re probably talking about our first pick, but it would improve our starters and depth.

We could also get an RT and move Tom ( which you like) to LT, because he’s the best LT on the roster right now, IMO.

Guam. When they kept running Walker out there with Yosh on the bench it definitely raised a ton of questions. And then he got benched, for Yosh, but then went back out starting the next week. But after that he really settled in. He still has some lapses with techniques, but he has really played well down the stretch.
Don't get me wrong. If the best player on the board is a LT, I say go for it. But i don't think they need to reach for one to get one.

With the first pick, I am in the moment ok with any position they would take. Outside of QB, I am good with any position.

I think they need to come away with 1-2 OL in the first say 5 rounds. Who knows what is going to happen with Bakhtiari. Yosh I believe will most likely leave. That leaves 2 guys at OT that we know will be here. I think they like Caleb Jones a lot, but he hasn't played yet. So who knows what we have there.
Runyan will most likely be gone, unless its a cheap deal. I can see them going with Rhyan there. Myers has another year to figure it all out, but he hasn't been as bad as most think, but he has a lot of room to improve. I could see them drafting a C/G type of player.

RC, Guam,....I think we need 9 starters on the offensive line. Every single year, our season ends with somebody who was our 9th OL or worse starting in the most important game of the season. So I'm in favor of adding quite a bit of talent to the offensive line

Our current putative starters for 2024 would be Walker, Jenkins, Myers, Rhyan and Tom. That's two pretty good starters, two more competent starters, and Rhyan. Behind that we have Newman. Caleb Jones has never played a snap.

We need to add starters, and above average starters if possible, so that when injuries hit we don't have to line up Newman and Jones on the right side.

We won't get a shot at the really big dogs, like Alt or Fuaga, but we might get a shot at the #4 over OT, whoever that is. It could be Latham. These guys like Morgan and Barton and Mims and Guyton will probably be available on Day 2.

If we could draft two starters in the first two days, that would indicate some real commitment to the offensive line and protecting our QB. We have FIVE picks...so far.

If we got a guy like Latham with our first pick, and then were able to get somebody who could be an interior guy , that would push Walker down to #6 and Rhyan down to #7, but it still leaves us with Newman and Jones. I'd come back in the 4th round and get one more.

How about this for next year: Latham, Jenkins, Myers, Beebe, Tom as the starters? Walker and Rhyan are first off the bench and Newman isn't on the team anymore.

Agree. OL should be top priority. Depth is lacking and some starters can be upgraded. Usually 5 OL are taken in the 1st round every year. This is a very good year for OL prospects. Alt and Ol' Fashan will be gone. From what I'm seeing Latham probably will be as well between 10-15th ish. The next 3 are Fuaga, Mims, and Morgan. Fuaga and Mims right around the Packers pick and Morgan late 1st. Fuaga intrigues me, G/RT. Long arm with strength mauler type the Packers lack. Gets to second level pretty easily. Mims and Morgan are True Tackle types. I'd take any of them. Morgan they could probably trade down for because he needs some work on with strength.

Love G Cooper Beebe. I'd be ecstatic if they got him with one of 2nd round picks. Grab a couple of these guys early and OL will be in good shape. Like you say add another later as a depth piece.

Speaking of Cooper...The one guy that can alter taking an OL in the 1st round would be Cooper DeJean. Given Gute's penchant for taking D every year and DB need, I can see him taking DeJean if he slides a bit. DeJean can play anywhere in the secondary. Safety, CB, or slot. Great playmaker. Also punt returner. If his lower leg injury checks out with no loss of speed he will be coveted. He would be the one defensive prospect in the 1st round I'd have no problem with. BTW, I'm an Iowa guy, so there is that.

I also would like to see a couple of RB's taken. I like Trey Benson in the 2nd. I don't think he lasts until the 3rd. Jonathon Brooks might slide to the 3rd. And Raheim "Rocket" Sanders later if his injury checks out. He could be a steal if he slides.

You're reading my mind. We do usually go defense, we absolutely need some help in the secondary. And I like the idea of Benson or Brooks, because I think we'll be replacing some RBs, and I also like Braelon Allen. Get a 1-2 punch for the next four years.

I know we need help in the secondary, but I'd load up this offense so that no injury could slow it down, and that people will get blocked no matter what.

I think it's fair to say that Gutekunst will go where the draft and his board leads him. There are some holes on both sides of the ball, and also some contracts coming due. Have a plan, stick to the plan.

Reactive drafting is always bad news.

I get that, but when I think of the Packers adding two premium
OL, like Morgan and Beebe, and replacing Jones/Dillon with two guys like Benson/Allen, it kind of puts the entire offense in place.

We only have 25 offensive players, one of them is Love's backup, and the other 23 should be the best we can do. We're losing two of our top 6 offensive linemen, and probably Dillon/Jones, so we should replace them by the end of the second day.

Defensively, I don't think we have any guys we're in danger of losing to FA, but we have to have more healthy bodies back there. HOPEFULLY, we'll start with Alexander and Stokes, and the other guys like Nixon and Valentine and Ford and Owens will have at least one guy improved and healthy, and we'll add a good defender in the draft, and maybe we can even swing something in FA.

The Packer strategy has been draft a defensive stud in the first, then offensive players on Day 2, and I'm thinking they could do it again. Start Day 2 with 4 picks and you need two RBs and two OL. Look at what you could get and what it would mean to the offense.

I'm down with that. That would be a great draft. Taking Jordan Morgan in the 1st should entail trading back a bit as he is late first, more of a high potential project, but should give us another draft pick.

You could almost go defense from there on and have a very good weekend.

If Dallas' Hankins is out or ineffective, that will help the GB offense tremendously. The Dallas D is way less effective against the run when he is not playing. Get a running game going and protect Love from the pass rush long enough to throw down field and the Packers have a punchers chance to pull off the upset. Dallas' run game isn't what it used to be, but GB cannot let Pollard find a groove or it'll be a long day for the Pack.

This game may come down to turnovers, and who makes the fewest mistakes. Just going to watch this game knowing the future is bright, much like the 2010 playoffs.

We all know that MM will give up on the run game in a heartbeat if he's feeling pressured, so the Packers playing with a lead will turn Dallas one-dimensional in a hurry.

Thanks for another good article Tim. Like our team currently, it's upbeat and emphasizes that the glass is half full - no matter how you look at it.

I think your take on Love- and his willingness to throw to whoever the player might be - is such a refreshing change from the antics we endured with AR12. Rodgers became all about Rodgers first. And IMHO, team second. It's so nice not to see Rodgers' eye rolling after a bad play. Love seems to never get too low or too high regardless of the circumstance. I am sure the team likes that as well.

I also agree that the Oline is coming together. Playing more of Tom and Rhyan has certainly helped. A draft with a mean, stud center certain couldn't hurt either.

Lastly, LaFleur has convinced me that he has not lost his offensive touch. While some will argue it has a lot to do with Love, I also believe it has to do with him evaluating the strengths of his young players far better than in the past. But, as strong as his offensive coaching is, his overall command of both the defense and STs needs far more growth on his part. It's likely why he isn't in the COTY discussions? Right now, he's still a one trick pony. I want to believe he can be more.

So, with a 9-8 record and in the playoffs, yes, the glass is certainly half full. What a nice change fom last season! GPG

I just don't get why LaFleur gets no credit. This is LaFleurs 5th year as the GB's coach. They have made the playoffs 4 out of those 5 years. And last year they had a chance to get in the last week, but lost. But for whatever reason, LaFleur has gotten little to no credit for that. All the credit goes to someone else.
So my question as I have asked many times before. If everyone else gets credit for GB's success like Rodgers, why is it that Rodgers has only had 1 year of 13 wins or more?

These are the records of the Packers the 5 years prior to LaFleur taking over.
2014: 12-4 2015: 10-6 2016: 10-6 2017: 7-9 2018: 6-9-1
Combined they were 48-34-1

These are the records of the Packers since LaFleur has taken over.
2019: 13-3 2020: 13-3 2021: 13-3 2022: 8-9 2023: 9-8
Combined they were 56-26

Its fine if people want to give Rodgers all the credit. Thats fine. But can we at least admit that he played some of his best football ever under LaFleur?

And why isn't LaFleur mentioned in COTY this year. I saw on X/Twitter that he wasnt' even considered a top 10 candidate for it. How/WHY? His team is the youngest team in the league and he has led them to the playoffs.

I just don't get why he doesn't get recognized more.

It took a little longer for the Black Monday theme to develop this season, but there are a lot of credible coaches out there who could be targets as the Packers' next DC. I've said for awhile that LaF will need to let Barry walk as his contract expires no matter how the defense performs on Sunday (or beyond). Ejiro Evero--my personal favorite--has been blocked by Carolina for parallel moves and he'll be on the HC radar for several teams. The Packers would have to offer him a promotion to interview him (DC and Asst. HC?). Right now, Rich Bisaccia is in that Asst. HC spot. To be frank, an early (WC or Div round) playoff exit would get the Packers access to many of those top guys before other teams hire an HC and start assembling staffs...so there might well be benefits either way for this team.

Around the NFCN
I think the Lions drew a bad matchup in this WC round game. Even though they get to play at home, they've drawn a team well-suited to attack their weak secondary all day. The Rams have been a hot football team since Stafford came back. Statistically these two teams are pretty even. I think the loss of LaPorta will take the wind out of Detroit's O--they'll have to rely on the run game more. I think the Lions lose.

The Bears are a mess. When an HC dismisses all his assistants on one side of the ball, it tells you he's likely on the knife edge himself. The Bears will have to make a decision on whether to keep Fields before he's ever played a game with the next OC. They'll have to decide how to invest that draft capital fully knowing that they might clean house and many of their players might be lousy fits for the next staff and scheme. They also might hit the jackpot. Still, the Bears have been mostly bad for the last 30 years for a reason: they make bad decisions.

The Vikings have been punting their rebuild down the line for a couple years, trying to hold that defense together just a little longer, trying to put just a couple more pieces around Cousins, hoping that OL will play just a little above their pay grade. O'Connell's body language the last couple games told you all you needed to know--without a quality QB, he's out of tricks.

Maybe I'm grasping at straws looking for reasons to pick the Packers, but this still feels like a bad matchup for GB and I'm worried it will get out of hand early if the Packers don't start quickly and Dallas can get up by a score or two. Playoff games often come down to mistakes. Both teams are among the most penalized in the league, so I see that as a wash, but this Packers defense doesn't force a lot of TOs (Dallas is +10 overall)...that's gotta change if they want to win and it doesn't play in GB's favor.

Doughboys' record against the 2023 playoff field: 3-4
...strength of schedule: 0.446 (29th)
...strength of victory: 0.392 (25th tie)
...record in one possession (<8 pt) games: 3-2
Packers' record against the 2023 playoff field: 4-3
...strength of schedule: 0.474 (26th tie)
...strength of victory: 0.458 (17th)
...record in one possession games: 6-5
Yes, teams with good records can't play or beat themselves, so they naturally tend to lose ground in SOS and SOV in divisional games, but I'm starting to think that maybe this matchup is much closer than it looked originally. Yes, Dallas has scored a crap-ton more points than the Packers this season (and has surrendered fewer), but that was mostly in burying the bad teams on their schedule. They play well at home, but haven't played a lot of one-possession games.

In all, Packers need to control the ball, force a couple TOs, and turn possessions in to 7s (not 3s or punts). The realist in me still sees a 2-score loss:
Dallas 37, GB 23
I'll enjoy this game on Sunday, no matter the outcome, as a victory lap for a team that's come a long way.

Other games...
Texans over Browns
Chiefs over 'phins
Bills over Steelers
Rams over Lions
Eagles over Bucs

You know DOBBER, I wouldn't put it past the Bears to screw up this draft, but it would be extremely hard.
If they keep Fields, who I think is the "Right Coordinator" away from being a good NFL QB, they win by drafting the Ohio State WR, Marvin Harrison.
Or they can trade the pick to the Patriots, get a boatload of picks and still draft Marvin Harrison.
Or they can trade back from #3 again a couple of spots for even more great picks.
Or they can trade Fields, get another first or second, and pick the QB they want. Also resetting their QB salary figure for another 5 years.

Knowing them, they probably screw it up somehow. Either way we still own them.

I'm glad the Packers are in the playoffs for several reasons, not the least of which is I get read your informative/entertaining piece for another week (any good nut brown ales back there?). What I was hoping to see this season was the "real" MLF offensive, not the "hold-the-ball-until-my-favorite-receiver-is-open offense served up last year by Rodgers. It took awhile, but the offense delivered. Packers beat the Vikings and Bears in "must win" games; my season is complete!

The better Jordan Love plays.
The better for the Defense.
It's been 1 game at a time for this team.
The biggest mistake was expecting
the Defense to stay on the field.
They can't. No defense can.

Of Course it's LOVE.
For him to continue to play better.
It took everyone to help him.
And in turn; he's helped everyone.

You didn't answer the question. Who was expecting the D to stay on field? What team, coach, fan ever expects a D to stay on the field. I don't care about step ups, rookies, or who left. That has nothing to do with what you said about expectations of staying on the field.

Maybe it's your at times incomprehensible paragraph structure.

What has gotten the Cowboys to the playoffs the last two seasons has been their hire of Dan Quinn to run the Defense.

McCarthy has his best DC in his head coaching career. Ironically, Quinn could be the top candidate for Jerry Jones to replace MM if the Dallas Offense falters again in the playoffs. Quinn will be highly sought as HC after the season...and Quinn will be able to be selective.

Not only is Jones looking over McCarthy's shoulder...Quinn may be look over the other one.

Having a healthy A. Jones playing against Dallas is such a plus. Jones just dominates that team! His "wave" going past the defender for the touchdown is still one of my favorite Packer moments (even though he was lucky to not get draw a penalty for it. At least I don't think he was penalized.) I hate Dallas more than any other team and would love to have Jerry crying up in his booth. Probably going to be way to close a game for that, but, then again, why not? Hey, Tim, I think you need to correct this sentence, "Sweat, relatively light, low alcohol, easy to drink, goes down smooth." I assume you meant to say the beer was "Sweet" unless some of that "mare's sweat" from the movie 'A funny thing happened on the way to the forum' was in the beer formula, lol.

An important positive the team in making the playoffs is simply gaining the experience of making the playoffs and playing a playoff game. They now know what it takes to finish the season strong, and they know they can do it. This week they'll learn how to prepare, how to face to hype, and how to ignore the hype and focus on the win-or-go-home stakes.

It's all positive for the team now. They should play loose and really give them a game. With a good showing they return next season with the "we're nobody's underdog" mentality.

And THIS or THAT... how about Adam Schefter or a kick in the shin?

For me, a bruise heals.

Many years ago, an old coach said that the team that does the best job of protecting their QB usually wins and I think that’s going to be the case Sunday. A turnover or two could really swing the balance. Love, if he’s protected, is going to protect the ball

Both teams can really pressure the passer. Lots of potential for takeaway. Is our starting secondary going to be Savage, Owens, Alexander, Stokes, and Nixon.? That would be 4 guys who’ve been here for years, and a pretty good 6 man front. Bottom line is we’re going to need points because they’re likely to get to 30.

Protect Love and score points and maybe the 4th quarter will be interesting,

Nice opening Tim as a recap of the season, but to say it is all "gravy" from here is to not get "it."
Put the "it" in the "gravy" so as not to miss the "grav-it-y" of the situation.
In other words, if the Packers take it easy on Sunday against the Cowboys, it would be a tragedy in terms of sports.
If they don't play hard and smart from the kickoff to the last second, it will be something they regret as individuals and as a team all of their lives.
Let's win this game, guys, or at least give it your all trying.
***
The Jaguars finished last season with a 5-1 surge, and then upset the Chargers in the first round of the playoffs with a monumental comeback.
This season, they started out 8-3, but then inexplicably collapsed to finish at 9-8 and out of the playoffs.
That's how fast things can go south for a team (or a player) if the edge is lost.
There are no guarantees for tomorrow. Football careers are sadly short and go by fast. Playoff opportunities don't come around automatically every year.
Max out every game, and every season.

A milk stout sounds great for sipping during a winter football game -- dark and substantial and creamy -- a little like hot chocolate but of course slightly cooled, with a little kick from the alcohol to put a little heat back in it.
A little can add up to make a lot.
I'm not confident of finding one in Georgia north of Atlanta, but it still sounds good. Maybe I'll check out the local liquor store that opened up fairly recently, which my wife says has a good selection of craft beers.

This will be a big test for Love. Dallas has a really good DC and we don't. Alexander was a big key to us beating Chicago and I would feel much better if he was healthy to take away Lamb. We can't waste scoring opportunities if we want to beat Dallas. That means scoring TDs when we have the chance. We also need our kicker to step up by not missing any kicks. That means no SHORT kickoffs that give the Cowboys better field position, and obviously no missed extra points or makeable FGs.

What a boost for next year it would be for this young Packer team to beat or even scare the Cowboys Sunday. Young players in pro sports tend to not be scared of playing against perceived better players. I hope thats us. GO PACK GO!!!!!!!!!!!
