Gut Reactions: Packers punch Seahawks in the mouth

Aaron gives his gut reactions to the Packers hard fought win over the Seahawks

  • A lot of people owe Joe Barry an apology.
  • Rashan Gary too.
  • Adrian Amos finished with one but probably should have had three interceptions. He was everywhere outside of those plays as well. Hell of a day from 31.
  • Really liked how they used Campbell as a spy on Wilson at times.
  • The Packers are allowing 11 points per game at home, the fewest in the NFL. (hat tip to Daire
  • That was the first time in Russell Wilson’s 150 career regular season starts that the Seahawks have been shut out.
  • Remember when PFF didn't have AJ Dillon on their draft board?
  • God it was great watching Dillon through Wagner for a TD.
  • Also, how about those Lambeau Leaps from 28!
  • Aaron Rodgers looked like a guy who hadn't practiced.
  • Pretty sure the interception was an homage to Brett.
  • Matt LaFleur called a game like a guy whose starting QB was on Zoom all week.
  • Seriously though, last week they should have leaned on the running game to help Love. THIS week they should have leaned on the running game to help Rodgers. Pretty clear they're never going to lean on the running game.
  • Speaking of the running game, burn the short yardage run out of the shotgun with fire.
  • Oh you mean yet another team mocked The Belt celebration and lost? The league will never learn.
  • I think Dean Lowry killed another guy.
  • Kevin King and Eric Stokes both had a nice day. (Please just hang on to the ball next time Kevin and spare us the suspense)
  • Here's hoping for good news long term on both Aaron Jones and Rashan Gary.
  • I love this defense.
  • Go Pack Go.

Sometimes the fans see things: Give the ball to A.J. Dillon, especially near the goal line.

Those runs started to go, but I would suggest it was the 39 minutes to 21 minute time of possession difference. They weren't working early or even in the middle. Eventually it worked, but you need a dominant defense to do it. Today, the D was dominant. Wilson being terrible was helpful.

Gary, Merciful hurt and Z out. Ouch.

I’d have to rewatch, but I saw it Dillon was getting yards from the start when the blocking did not simply whiff.

Having looked at the play by play, CW, you are correct. I responded below to Swisch. It was pretty decent and GB had a number of good runs on first down and no negative runs on 1st and 10.

Very few negative runs. up the middle was not so good, but it generally wasn't awful, more like stalemates with the RB getting a little anyway.

Interesting comment, TGR, and I'd be glad for you to write an article this week on how the Packers got to that huge advantage in time of possession.
To some extent, as Tony Romo seemed to point out, a couple of screen passes to Aaron Jones for big yardage seemed to serve a similar purpose to run plays.
In any case, even if the running plays don't pay off as much early, the pounding given to the defense in the process often pays off in the last quarter.
***
I sure hope we get Aaron Jones back soon!
However, it may have taken his (hopefully temporary) injury to force the Packers to go more to A. J. (Armored Jeep) Dillon.
For awhile now, it seems the average fans here at CHTV have seen what the experts on the coaching staff have apparently missed. Give the ball to A.J. Dillon, especially near the goal line. At least fake it to him on other plays.
***
Going forward, especially against defenses that are especially physical, the Packers may want to go more with Dillon than Jones in the running game.
That doesn't mean Jones won't be a huge part of the offense, but Dillon's the guy who should be carrying the load to establish the run at the beginning of games, and to seal the deal late.
Jones can be great for change of pace plays as a rusher and receiver, and a threat to break big plays.
I know Jones has seniority, and just signed a big contract, but he has to be willing to give way somewhat to Dillon. I think Jones has the high character to accept this with grace for the good of the team.
It'll be good for Jones, too, as less will be more. He'll stay healthier, and get at least a couple of big gains per game of more than 10 yards, with perhaps one per game of more than 30 yards.
There'll be plenty of work, and plenty of success, for both Jones and Dillon at running back, even if Dillon gets more touches than Jones.
It seems time to work in Patrick Taylor at times, too.
***
Genuinely look forward to perhaps getting more of your thoughts, TGR, whether now and/or later this week (after time for more analysis).

Defense mostly. Seattle's drives:

3 plays, 9 yards
5 plays, 39 yards
3 plays, 6 yards
4 plays, 26 yards
7 plays, but just 20 yards.

end first half.

5 plays, 11 yards
11 plays, 50 yards INT.
3 plays, minus 3 yards
5 plays, 23 yards
13 plays, 41 yards End game. GB in prevent.

GB didn't have many (any?) negative plays on first down. Yeah, they muddled around some on first down, but they usually got a few yards and sometimes got a nice 5 yard gain. It was usually 2nd and 6, 7 or 8. Not many negative plays at all. I had Dillon with a -1 (on 3rd and one - not really his fault as he was met well in the backfield). I had Dillon with a zero gain once. I thought I remember Jones with a negative run, but I didn't see it just skimming the play by play.

Dillon has nice hands. Not sure that he adjusts as well as Jones since he is a big guy, but I think his hands themselves are better than Jones'. Maybe.

Thanks, TGR.
I think a general shift of emphasis from Jones to Dillon could be a subtle thing with significant results for improving the offense, especially in the red zone.
There would some games in which Jones runs wild, and then Dillon would be somewhat secondary.
I'd like the Packers to be able to play it both ways, according to the situation, featuring whichever back is working best against a particular defense.
Again, there's enough plays for both guys to have a huge role in the offense. My hope is that each of them is willing to defer to the other in any given situation, and in any given game.
***
I'm glad for other fans to weigh in on this opinion of mine regarding to Jones and Dillon, both of whom I really like as potent weapons for the Packers.
I'm more of an impressionist of what's happening on the field; more detailed fans with further analysis can help me to modify my views, or even overturn them.

I'd give Dillon more credit because overall I think the OL was not particularly good. Not terrible but just average with some decent plays and some poor plays. Dillon was a beast.

In fact the last few games I feel the OL has been fairly poor at pass pro too. I don't have stats to look at that but by the eye test, Love and now Rodgers had pass rushers in their face time after time. Today the game plan adjusted with screen passes that worked wonderfully (when the pass was thrown accurately).

So in summary, Dillon gets a game ball, Dee gets a game ball, and the injuries suck!!

My Grandmother never blocked a pass, she was quite a dead center wide receiver back in the day! No tight end duty for her, she had 'em running back. Grandpa had to guard the door and tackle the aggressors with no regard for his safety.

Russell Wilson came into the game with a mild bout of the Milligurbs and left with a full-blown case courtesy of the Packers D.

It’s always nice to end the Seahawk’s season. Especially nice to end it in November with a shutout.

If a sad gum-chomping Pete Carroll falls in the forest, does he make a sound?

Good to know the Packers can win without Aaron Rodgers and Odell Beckham Jr.

Randall Cobb: still not injured, still contributing.

MVS: so-called one trick pony with a really effing good trick (and he blocks!).

It’s the Minnesota NFL franchise’s Super Bowl next week. Might as well make them so sad, too.

So long, Seahawks, Good try!

In regard to Mercilous, you don't have to wait. He has a biceps tendon rupture! How it will effect him the rest of the season, I don't know from a sports medicine standpoint. If you don't believe me, rewind the tape and watch him walking off the field and compare both biceps muscles. Notice a prominent "bulge" on the left, towards the elbow, it's contracted compared to the right. In "normal" people the condition is non surgical and heals with time and people go back to their regular business. How the Packers will deal it and whether he'll return to play this season I have no clue.

next man up works. if the other guys play to their ability. in the packers case, alot of them are playing at the peak of their potential. its great to see. dean lowry, king, lancaster, campbell, barnes, savage, p smith, amos, rashan gary, kenny clark. every single one of those guys is playing their best ball ever in my opinion. so if one goes down, the next guy just has to keep doing what he is doing.

Taylor is the backup now. Pack needed to put the game away first half. sloppy Rd Zone effort again starting out of the gate. Jones with some big drops and Rodgers off-target. A hard hitting contest and great secondary play from the Pack. . Glad Stokes is healthy .He takes out the speed guys . Amos missing a pick while covering for Savage.

Glad to see the disdain on Carroll's face after being shut out and being 0-5 at Lambeau with Wilson. DK Metcalf got absolutely shut down and we see exactly what kind of child he is after punching 3 players in the face, but how is that not a 15 yard penalty after going back into the huddle after being ejected? Whatever. It made little difference, this GB defense, without it's top 3 pass rushers now, HANDED it to Seattle, Wilson and Carroll. Congrats on a great team win, guys.

Barry is back by three veteran defensive coaches. One who has been a very successful DC in Minnesota. It has been clear since the second game that this has been a group effort by all concerned. Props to Barry for playing to his strength as a ILB coach. Props to the defensive players who have matured and know their roles in this defense. And give GM Gutekunst all the credit in the world for getting the right kind of FA for this defensive scheme. This defense is playing at a level rarely seen during the regular season, so give all concern the credit to play championship football this season.

Without a doubt this is one of the most satisfying victories I've witnessed in years. To the younger readers this is typical of a game during the 60's Packers. Two teams with tough defenses going toe-to-toe. Ball control means every play counts. In an era when 30-40 points is deemed as a good game, what a wonderful performance to see the Packers stop a top-shelf quarterback to zero points.
Light snow, tough football, crushing the opponent at the end.
Great game.

It was the middle of the 4th quarter before either team found the end zone (at least, with completed passes to their own team - boneheaded pick by 12), but eventually the long, if fruitless, drives plus inspired play by the defense allowed the Packers to outlast the Seahawks. It's wild to think that a change of DC and some key signings by Gutekunst have lifted this unit from what it was last year to what it is now - dominant. If GB can clean some things up on offense and sustain this level of play on defense, this team could very well be Super Bowl bound. GPG!

I got to witness something that was really shameful today. I followed the game as I normally do here on CHTV. One of the regular posters on here, which it's now very obvious he is not a Packers fan argued that the fumble recovered by #12 on the bad exchange should be Seattle's ball. He hates Rodgers so bad he would rather see the Packers loose so he can pin something on him. There were other comments almost as bad so the only conclusion I can come up with is there are a lot of Vikings and Bears trolls here on CHTV.

I didn't see the effects of an illness. I saw the effects on Rodgers having to run for his life on several pass plays due to OL breakdowns. I like the potential of Newman...but now opponents have a lot of film on him. He is being exploited with stunts, slants missed assignments. He's a rookie and in time should be good NFL OL.

I love the aerial acrobatics of the passing game, but also the crushing blows of the running game. I like to outsmart and outmuscle teams
I'm also excited about having an aggressive defense that is physically imposing.
To be a great team usually means having versatility in terms of skilled athleticism and pounding power.
This Packers team can really put things together down the stretch to hone its offense and defense to be ready in the playoffs for whatever situations may come up.
This is a really exciting team putting together a truly excellent season.

Yes, I like the comment.

It appears that the Packers can win in multiple ways. They can win with the run. They can win with the pass. They can win with the run and pass creaking a little but still productive. Part of that is simply the defense making it possible to not think the world is coming to an end if the offense has a 3 and out or otherwise fails to provide a lead.

Defense! Defense!! Defense!!! When the defense plays this well we are going to be tough to beat.

OL was having another bad game until the 4th quarter. 2 4th quarter TD drives were huge.
Finally MLF went to Dillon on the goal line.

Lazard had a few drops which hurt drives. We still need a legit #2 WR.

Except for the early missed FG our STs were not a disaster.

That was a VERY impressive performance by the Packers Defense. My God I hope Gary is okay. These injuries are getting ridiculous!

Speaking of injuries I hope Aaron Jones will be back this year and there's hopefully just a sprain. I'm hoping the fact he didn't go to the dressing room as a glimmer of hope. MLF finally started calling SCREENS in the 2nd half and woo-la, the Packers started moving the ball.

Perhaps while the Packers were killing the clock on that final TD drive, MLF will FINALLY learn to run AJ Dillon near the goalline. That TD where he just used those huge ass legs to drive Bobby Wagner back into the endzone for a TD was a thing of beauty. Just like Master Card...Priceless!

Between Romo and the little I've heard on TV after the game, Russell Wilson was just rusty. Yes, I'm sure he was...Just like Rodgers was. BUT I'll also venture to say the Packers defense is LEGIT!!!

Along with the Vikings and Cowboys, the Seahawks are one of my favorite teams to beat.
There's something about the attitude of the Seahawks that cries out for putting them in a place of humility.
To win this time by overpowering them makes it all the more sweet.

Rasul Douglas continues to be really impressive. Both safeties and all CBs were wonderful. Hope Mason gets on track… we will need him. I try to love others but I find it incredibly difficult to not hate the gum chewer and his teams (other than Russell). I’m going to have a great week in the Pacific Northwest.

Goood...goood...yes, yes, Doug, let the hate flow through you. Join me on the Dark Side where we soothe pain from a certain onside kick and Fail Mary with the schadenfreude that is a tasty Seahawk loss. May their stolen 12th man BS be silenced, and their silly little PNW Noisehole have plenty of empty seats for years to come. ::fistbump::

I like your feistiness tonight, Leotis.
One of the great things about sports is that it's an arena in which we as fans can legitimately enjoy a good measure of pushing the other guys around. We can blow off some steam.
For whatever reason, the Seahawks do seem to lead the league in obnoxiousness, and so it's extra fun to hand them a defeat, and especially with a high degree of pounding.
Knock the sass right out of 'em.

He's a little too perfect, somehow, isn't he?
I truly wish Russell Wilson well overall, but there's a certain extra satisfaction in beating the likes of him and Tom Brady.
Perhaps that's somewhat of a credit to them; and somewhat of a commentary on my inadequacies ;-).

For sure. He seems a little plastic, like Brady.

I'm old enough to remember that great also-ran, Fran Tarkenton. I really can't stand him -- he's still a twerp -- or anyone who plays remotely like him.

*Wow, what a defense!!!
*AJ Dillon is the man.
*Can we stop throwing the WR screen to 17? Every defense has that play figured out. If we don’t figure it out, we are going to see a pick 6.
*No, we can’t trust Mason Crosby this year.
*This team is good even with the injuries. How good can we be if we get semi-healthy?
*Love the grit this team has.
*What’s up with Kevin King?!! Someone must have a fire under him. Can he keep it up?

Two Wides blocking for the receiver on the short screen doesn't scare defenses. Watched the Patriots game and witnessed true execution of the WR screen game with pulling guards out front.

There's nothing I like more than a shutout, but it's a sobering win with the injuries to Gary and Jones. We'll have to wait and see what the deal is. Mercilus, too.

What a treat for the fans in attendance to witness a shutout; they don't often happen anymore.

What a war of attrition. While we had a big drop and a bad interception, we won TOP by nearly 2:1--that's a formula for success when your defense is playing THAT well.

With the exception of the Crosby miss, special teams were not a problem. Thankfully.

Dillon: Obviously the power TD runs were more important, but that catch and run down the sideline was pretty damn impressive.

Award time:

1) Coach of the Year: Barry. I know he's an assistant, but he deserves it anyway. The secondary is just playing lights out, and opposing QBs are being short-circuited by our schemes and execution.

2) Joint winners, Shithead of the Game: Dunlap and Metcalf. Such poor sports, and wholly deserving of the penalties called against them. Mr. Backes may even want to consider the Dunlap shoe fling for his Game-Changing Play column.

A shutout?? Woo hoo! Finally Green Bay has a legit defense we can trust. Take a bow, Mr. Barry. This is what we've been hoping for since forever. This last dance will go much smoother if our defense can wipe out the other teams' trombone sections!

Dillon is a beast. Whatever they're feeding him, bottle it and sell it to geriatrics. They'll be kicking the teeth out of teenagers in no time.

Hope Jones and Gary are okay. We need these guys!!

Who is this defense??? Amazing. From the debacle in NO (o.k., the O never really gave the D a chance in that game) to a shutout against Seattle. And with soooo many pieces missing.

Welcome back Preston Smith! Just in the nick of time.

Slayton had some nice plays.

Newman needs to be the first guy on the bench. Patrick needs to be the second guy on the bench.

Patrick Taylor, you did your job. Apparently, no one expected him to actually get the ball on that first play. Fooled them.

I LIKE Patrick Taylor. I liked him coming out of Memphis when he was actually the RB and Antonio Gibson was a WR PLAYING RB from time to time.

Man, I sure would have loved to have Hill on the roster still. I love me some Aaron Jones but I always thought Jones could be very Jones like.

I think Packers fans are going to be impressed with Patrick Taylor. BUT, lets hope Jones is okay for the stretch run.

Let's see if coordination between snapper, holder and kicker can be refined through the stretch drive in time for playoff clutch-ness.

If there is one team outside the NFC North that I loathe the most, it's Seattle.

Between some of the most gut wrenching defeats ever (the Fail Mary, the NFC Championship nightmare), the endless whining from Pete Carroll and his team of undisciplined goons, I have no sympathy for Pete Carroll. None.

Jamal Adams mocking the belt was the icing, Metcalf getting ejected was the sprinkles and the defense pitching a shutout was the cherry on top. Have a nice flight back to Seattle, and enjoy being in the basement of the NFC West.

This defense is legit. My only concern is the injuries are really starting to pile up. Gary's injury looked ugly and Mercilus grabbing his bicep has me worried. Kevin King played his 2nd straight good game, he just needs to stay healthy. Guy is a string bean and gets injured too easily. Stokes looks like the real deal, and PFF can eat their words on him (as they are about AJ Dillon).

I love our safety duo. I never understood why Chicago let Amos go, but he is a rock back there, and is a big reason why Savage is doing well too....as soon as Amos left Chicago, Eddie Jackson's play has taken a nosedive. You gotta have a tandem back there and they're great together. Can you imagine how good this secondary can be when Jaire comes back in January (my estimate at this point).

Special teams -- a lot better tonight, aside from Crosby missing another freaking kick. Let's hope he gained some bit of confidence after hitting his other two PATs and one FG. Coverage units were pretty solid, Bojorquez keeps punting well and no bad decisions by Amari Rodgers.

Rodgers was rusty. I can only hope a week of practice will help the offense get back in rhythm.

Davante Adams has the 4th most receiving yards in the NFL
Yards allowed, points allowed - Packers D is now 3rd best in the NFL
At +7 TO differential, the Packers are 4th best in the NFL
The Packers have the most home wins of any team in NFL history: 451
Over the last three weeks, the Packers faced Kyler Murray, Patrick Mahomes and Russell Wilson. Their *combined* stats: 62-of-110 (56.3%), 601 yards, 1 TD, 4 INT. Damn!

Gut reaction: the nausea, knowing this same guy who twice threw dirt on our Packers since April, twice put bullseyes on our team’s back, twice solely responsible for our twice losing this season, continues to lead this team at QB.

I’m just being 100% honest. I do not like him, and I have ZERO faith that he’s going to close the deal. I haven’t felt this way watching the Packers since Randy Wright…

Can the guy lead a receiver on a throw? Hit him in stride? Would it be possible for him to hand the ball off more?

I shouldn’t have these visceral gut reactions sitting down to watch our team, but there it is.

Otherwise, I agree with all that Nags said.

I found myself becoming totally convinced that with another full week of preparation and a better game plan, Jordan love would have looked absolutely no worse than AR did yesterday.

There was a hot read throw on a free runner blitz that I said to myself, "if Love can just do THAT, then he will be just fine".

The transition will not be difficult to stomach for GBP fans, just indigestible for AR sycophants.

There were dropped passes...several in fact. Can't blame those on Rodgers.

I was put off by Rodgers Spring and Summer season's of discontent. The Covid stance I understood. After being away from the team for almost two weeks, I think he played pretty well.

I am pulling for Jordan Love. Seems like a talented, hard working kid. But I know the SB is more likely with Rodgers under center.

The defense is playing lights out, which no one would have believed after week one. What is mind boggling is their doing it without Alexander and L. Smith. Yes, certain players like, Lowry, Lancaster and K. King have stepped up their game. Campbell has been a pleasant addition to the unit. Stokes is the real deal and picking up Douglas has solidified the secondary. Gutey needs credit for the additions and Barry has them believing in themselves. Let’s get healthy and run the table, remember, defense wins Championships, Go Pack Go!!!

If AJ has a sprained MCL he could return in two weeks which would become 3 weeks with the bye after the Rams.

In the interim, bowl for strikes with AJD and spell him with Patrick Taylor. I am excited to see Taylor play. And he has been in the playbook since Spring 2020 although injured for most of 2020.
