Eyes Front: Can Packers Dodge the Bird Droppings?

Falcons powerhouse players will test Green Bay.

Playing in the Falcons’ nest has not been a pleasant experience for the Packers in recent years. Since 2016, the Packers have played the Falcons five times, losing all three in Atlanta. And the memory of Michael Vick shredding Green Bay’s invincibility at Lambeau lingers forever.

The Falcons are an oddity, with a creative yet confounding coach. Arthur Smith’s offense boasts some of the most dynamic athletes on the planet, yet he makes use of them in strangely sporadic ways. He is a run-first, run-mostly coach, so much so that highly drafted receivers Kyle Pitts and Drake London see the football far less than their talent would dictate. Could it be that Atlanta’s coaches don’t trust Desmond Ridder throwing?

But Smith also has this year’s draft darling, Bijan Robinson, and second-year RB Tyler Allgeier, making for the most dynamic run combination in the league and the center of this offense. Here’s what to look for going into week 2:

Key Falcons’ advantages:

— I was concerned about whether the Packers had made headway solving their run-defense issues, and they showed considerable progress in Chicago. But the talent of Atlanta’s backs, plus a top-notch run-blocking O-line, are levels above what the Bears put on the field. The Packers did not tackle well against the Bears, and that simply won’t cut it this week.

— Smith’s devotion to the run is so strong that he seems determined to prove that he can win with any jamoke at quarterback. And that is all Ridder is, but one has to believe that Smith is also smart enough to know that to win games he can’t let opposing defenses ignore the pass. When Pitts and London do get the ball, it often results in explosive plays. And he uses his backs for receiving, too: Last week Robinson and Allegeier combined for nine receptions. Pitts and London had two. This is where it gets dangerous for Green Bay, particularly given the injury to Quay Walker. If he doesn’t clear concussion protocol in time, the Packers have no replacement close in coverage ability.

— Atlanta’s defensive stats last year were only slightly better than Chicago’s, so they signed one of the best safeties in the league in Jessie Bates. Here’s what he did against Carolina in week 1: 10 tackles (half of them solo), two INTs, two pass breakups and one forced fumble. Darnell Savage had a nice game against the Bears — a welcome reversal from his regression last year — but Rudy Ford most certainly did not. The Packers’ lack of talent and depth at safety is going to be tested.

— A.J. Dillon’s lack of production is a growing concern. Whether he’s lost a step or he’s failing to see and hit the right holes, the regression that started last year showed little sign of turning around against the Bears. With Aaron Jones nursing a balky hamstring, the Packers could be taking the field with a critical component of their offense seriously compromised. Emanuel Wilson, this year’s surprise UFDA, might get significant touches.

Key Packers’ advantages:

— The overall talent gap isn’t as big as it was last weekend, but once again the Packers start with the better and deeper overall roster. The biggest difference is at the most important position in football, and Jordan Love — while far from great — was certainly better than competent against the Bears, with more upside plainly visible. It’s too early to anoint him the next, decade-long franchise QB, but nothing we saw in Chicago said he can’t be. Desmond Ridder is no one’s idea of that; this offense asks little more of him than to be a game manager who doesn’t make mistakes. That’s a high variance proposition.

— The gap in pass-rush capability is also significant. Chicago was unable to pressure Love to any degree, and Atlanta’s edge play is only slightly better. Green Bay, meanwhile, is starting to look like a team with a top-tier pass rush unit that could easily force Ridder into costly errors. And if the Packers’ O-line continues to provide elite pass protection. Love should again have ample time to run through progressions and extend plays.

— I continue to believe the Packers enjoy an early season boost from teams having no real priors on which to plan for Matt LaFleur’s offense. The more he shows diverse looks, the longer Green Bay will maintain that edge. Throw in creative play calls like the back-across-the-field screen to Jones last week, and the Pack can put up points.

The bottom line

Injury status is going to play a big role. If Watson, Jones and Walker all have to sit, the Packers could be in for a tough day. Walker was a limited practice participant Thursday, so that might be a good sign. Romeo Doubs was also limited, still nursing his hamstring. The Falcons have only one player in doubt, LB Troy Andersen, who is in concussion  protocol.

The desert denizens have moved the Packers from slight favorites to slight underdogs. This game will be a good test of the team’s grit. GPG.

Do the Packers have the corners to put an extra guy in the box and still hold up on the outside? Yes.

Does the Packer offense have enough healthy hamstrings to get a substantial lead and force the “jamoke” (ha!) to throw? Not so sure.

Can the Pack (or any team) expect their tackling to IMPROVE as the season progresses, given the limitations of the current CBA? I dunno.

Will the game be a blast to watch? Hell yeah!

GPG!

Do the Packers have the safeties to play heavy in the box and still not give up open looks downfield?

Thanks for the write-up, this was very helpful. After making do without Christian Watson last week, the Packers may be without Watson AND Aaron Jones. That would be tough.

Watson and JOnes tilt the field, but I think we have the stable to go without Watson for another week if need be, it's great experience for the depth on the roster in any event.

Jones is a major loss, but the silver lining will be seeing more of Patrick Taylor and maybe Wilson gets a chance to see live action. People want to see if Wilson's pre-season explosion translates to regular season sunday, this might be the chance to find out, and Taylor's pass pro makes him a strong asset as well.

While injuries to starters always are a struggle to overcome, at least when you have depth at the positions there's the upside of gaining experience for talented, young players.

Yes, getting looks at these other players could be an ideal outcome as long as they have the horses to actually win this thing. Watson is their vertical field stretcher and Jones is their horizontal field stretcher. LaFleur may need to get a little more creative if these guys aren't available.

They brought in Dillon to be the other guy. LaFleur will have to make a decision whether he can risk him being the bell cow vs. Atlanta. A heavy dose of Doubs, Reed and Musgrave, should keep the air show aloft. Toss in Toure' and let Taylor make some plays. No reason to panic.

They brought Dillon in to be the thunder to Jones’ lightning. If that’s what we want him to be, we need to try using him from under center and let him pound the opposing line down. If Jones is out, much as I like Taylor, we have to go with Wilson as the other featured back, especially against a team who seem seem weakest in the edge. He’s the only other one with burst, unless we want to bring up Melton and run a lot of gadget plays.

This will be a tougher challenge from their runners. They also have Patterson as a gadget type. Ridder isn’t mobile, but they will look to spread us out horizontally and try to get their athletes in a position to do damage with ball in hand. Their O is more like a college approach than any other NFL team’s.

To be fair, just as our safeties weren’t tested deep, neither really were theirs. Their corners are not as good as ours either. However, they will rush better and blitz. Our OL will have a sterner challenge protecting Love in terms of both opposing talent and aggressive calls. Their weakest points against our run would seem to be outside. We need to be willing to play Wilson if Jones can’t go and just use Dillon to pound them north/south from under center.

" We need to be willing to play Wilson if Jones can’t go and just use Dillon to pound them north/south from under center."

Absolutely, that's exactly what they need to do. Hell, I'd do it even if Jones IS healthy. Hey, I like AJ Dillon but I'm starting to wonder if he'll ever really be as good as we hoped.

Dillon knew he didn't look good last year and thought he figured out why. After watching in week one that CLEARLY isn't the case. Wilson is 5'11" and 225 pounds. He's not Dillon big, but he's faster than Dillon and bigger than Jones.

My sentiments exactly, Nick.

There really isn't a better time to put Emanuel Wilson to the test than Sunday vs. ATL. His game is built perfectly to take advantage of the Falcon's greatest weakness, rushing outside. Hoping MLF feeds Wilson a very heavy dose of carries along with Dillon, while mixing in a good amount of play action.

This is also going to be a good test of our run blocking mettle. It's time we worked on that in a dedicated fashion. One of the many benefits to a successful run heavy assault v. ATL is keeping the Falcons' own RBs stuck on their own sidelines. Would go a long way towards neutralizing their strength, while keeping our D fresh.

Ridder ran the Bearcat offense tossing to Pierce and going deep to Tre Tucker. Smith will let Bijan Robinson try to dominate the safeties. This is a test of the LBs ability to plug the gaps and the defense must swarm to the ball all day long. Best to score points fast and often.

If the Packers defense can contain Atlanta's run game and keep the game close the Packers should be able to take this game. They need to build a lead and make Atlanta try to win with the pass.

This game could have a very similar feel as the game against the Bears. Specifically keep it close for the first half. Figure out what will work, adjust and come out in the second half ready to dominate and pull away. Once again the Packers OL and defense will be the keys to the game. Closer than last week's game but I like the Pack 27-17. Thanks, Since '61

I'd sit them all. Safe is better than sorry.
This game is about the QBs. Growth.
Where is your faith in Love now?

Forget the ifs with this Defense.
They're healthy enough
to win it by themselves.

Excellent point SH, one I've been hoping to say and see for a while now. The GB defense CAN win games by themselves, I really believe that. But they need to do it consistently...

Lets hope week 2 of consistently is this Sunday...

Defense carrying the day would be a fantastic development. Here's to hoping Walker can pass the concussion tests - ILB will have to come up bigtime. I will be at the game watching our new defensive line fill some gaps. Hopefully the OLB's can seal the edges, and youth can swarm the ball. If their new RB and Ridder can both be stopped on the ground, then it would be a great thing to see and a great away game trip.

"A.J. Dillon’s lack of production is a growing concern. Whether he’s lost a step or he’s failing to see and hit the right holes, the regression that started last year"

It's hard to see a hole that is getting pushed back into your face. They have to figure a way to help Myers (if they insist he's the best option), and he has to start getting off the ball. Maybe following the fullback through? Have Love under center and let Dillon go.

It's easier for the RB to hit the tackle's shoulder if the QB's playing under C. I think they need to call more designed edge runs this week (but not running him to the boundary) to spread out the Falcons' defense laterally and start freeing up those weak A gaps. Calais Campbell is way past his prime, but he takes up a lot of space and has tremendous reach.

Michael Jordan, the practice squad player the Packers just signed, used to play center at Ohio State. Mater of fact Jordan earned first-team All-America honors from SI.com and second-team honors from the Walter Camp Football Foundation in 2018 PLAYING center.

Just hell yes to Love under Center and letting Dillon go. That is, IF he can still go. I'd love to see a game from Dillon on Sunday like the one he played against Tennessee as a rookie. He definitely could use a confidence boost. A game like that would do it I'd imagine!

I’m afraid that the offensive line decisions of the last couple of years seem consistently dubious. Is it favoritism? Excess loyalty? Fear of the risk of change? Or something else? Going back to Stenovich’s switcheroo, we seem adept at ignoring the obvious. Myers is an obvious weak link in the run game, which is an equally obvious plank in the O.

Yet we run through hoops to avoid addressing that through possible alternatives, just as we avoided them when Newman and Hanson were failing last year, only to then suddenly push Nijman over to the right without the time that they stated was needed to avoid him being unprepared, and then repeated the same with Tom when playing Nijman injured—one armed —failed: yes they were that averse to letting Tom play RT. It’s hugely ironic that now they insist Tom must play RT.

The time for LaFleur to step in may be approaching. It’s not OK for us to have an atrocious run blocker in the middle. It’s ridiculous to say that Tom can’t play C or that Nijman can’t play T, and if he can and Walker is better, it only makes it more ludicrous that Walker is sitting. Never mind Jones, whom they also like. Improving the C run blocking would help both Gs enormously too. Myers either gets better dramatically now or LaFleur is going to face up to having to be a head coach very soon.

Atlanta also uses the same playbook as the 2020-2022 (aka Allan Lazard) Packers: add Mack Hollins to the WR group and their pass catchers are big and physical. Pitts didn't come out with much acumen as a blocker, but he can bully CBs and Ss in the run game. They want to spring their runners into space and allow those guys to take their defenders out of the mix. Rasul Douglas is big enough to hold his own, but not Jaire, Savage, or Nixon. Being able to stop the run and force favorable down/distance with the front 7 is priority 1 this week...discipline on the edge, secure the tackle.

"Atlanta’s defensive stats last year were only slightly better than Chicago’s, so they signed one of the best safeties in the league in Jessie Bates. "

An upper-echelon S makes a huge difference in a defense. The Packers could really use one.

"The desert denizens have moved the Packers from slight favorites to slight underdogs."

It's kinda trite, but the Packers need to find a way to score first and play with a lead. Atlanta won't abandon the run even if they're down by two scores, but it will force them to take more chances, which plays to the Packers' strength on defense. Playing with a lead keeps the whole playbook open for Love and the offense, and keeps even a meh defense like Atlanta's from being able to stop playing run.

Bates is good, but last week was both a career outlier and an example of the game that player might ask for if an opponent given the proverbial three wishes. He’s better than Ford, but think of the game Ford had with his interceptions last year.

Prior to last week, Bates appeared to be declining from his 111tackles in 2020. He had a career low 71 last year. Now he’s all world? He was the best if a weak class of S FAs, but let’s not turn him into a Woodson (he’d have over 170 tackles this year at that rate) based on one game against a weak opponent and startled rookie QB. I think Savage had 10 tackles (9 in some counts) last week as well, for context.

I agree, Atlanta will not abandon the run. They did not against Carolina (who repeated shot themselves in their paws last Sunday with T/Os). By the start of the 4th quarter, the Falcons had their way with the Panthers...having ground down the OL for 3 quarters...and ran and passed to two fairly easy TDs on a gassed D.

1) Christian Watson: highly talented but he might be too fragile for the pro game. Potential is pointless when you're on the sideline.
2) The same thing with Aaron Jones. Among the league's best runners but is less available to play as time goes on.
3) I doubt the Packers can stop the Falcons offense all game. The question is whether the Packers will be able to score.
4) The Falcons will be +3 merely for the home field advantage.

I would like to say the game is a toss up but right now I'm leaning to a Falcons close win. Don't forget the Packers beat the Bears last week, the team that was fighting last year for the worst team in the league.

Hamstrings can happen to anyone. Small school athletes sometimes still have a big learning curve in terms of physical adaptation and learning to maintain themselves physically. The pros is a lot longer and more intense. I think we should pump the breaks on the “fragile” fears.

I don't know enough about the Falcons to say where they have advantages at and where GB has more. So instead of advantages/disadvantages I will change it to concerns and feel goods.

Concerns:
- Falcons running game. Robinson is already a stud. He didn't put up monstrous numbers in week 1. But he has flashed already. In the first game they ran 25 times for 131 yards and 2 TD's. They scored 3 TD's in the game and Allgeler and Robinson had all 3.

- Kyle Pitts. He is a matchup nightmare.

-GB's Injuries. To me this is the biggest one. It looks like Watson is going to miss week 2. Jones hasn't practiced and even if he would play, we have to anticipate him being on a pitch count. Jones is the heart and soul of our offense. Dillon needs to step it up big time! Walker is also a concern if he can't go.

Feels Good:
- Trenches. Our lines are very good. our OL gives our offense time to throw the ball. Our DL is vastly improved from last year. Wyatt has emerged and was unblockable at times. Win the trenches win most games.

- Love. I mean it always feels good when you have Love. Love looked very poised and very good in his debut as the new starter. There will be ups and downs with Love as a first year starter. But he looked like nothing is going to phase him. We should definitely feel good about Love.

- Young talent. We have the youngest team in the league. But we have some very key veteran players in the positions that we need them the most. LT and CB. Our defense in general is a veteran unit. But even with that we have a lot of young great players playing.
There will be some learning curves along the way. But the talent is there. Reed and Musgrave on offense have definitely injected some energy into those positions. Tom has been a stud at RT. Wyatt, Wooden and Brooks were very good in their debuts. Walker looks like he has taken a year 2 jump. We have a ton of young talent.

This Packer team is going to have firsts every game this. Last week was could they dominate the Bears. Answer: Yes.

This week: Can they limit the Falcons running game. And will the defense pressure their QB into forcing errors. I think that the offense will put up some points to make the game at least winnable.

Another week and another challenge to overcome. A great time to be a Packer fan.

I'm still not committed to this latest version of the Packers. Quarterback is still raw. Defense/pass rush was good. . . against the Bears. But Bears still made some good runs against the defense, and there was too much bad tackling here and there. Defense still has to prove itself against much better teams. Same with offense. Way too soon yet to get a decent evaluation on the Packers. The whole team is way too raw yet, inconsistent. And the constant hamstring problems. That was the take on Watson, for example- too injury prone.

A lotta ifs, yet.

History! I'm not much of a history buff, except when it comes to the Green Bay Packers and I love their history. 13 World Championships and memories that take me back to the great playing days of Bart Starr to our new and exciting Jordan Love. With the NFL (Not For Long) we are adding around 8 or more new Packers players every year, so the team and the chemistry is somewhat different each year. This year, I am excited to watch our new team in person next week when we play the New Orleans Saints at Lambeau Field in our season opener. If there were a place where Cheesehead TV guys do or could meet up before a game, it would be fun to chat in person with the guys who post on this board. Does such a location exist? I'm stuck in California and only get to games periodically, so it's a special day to see the Packers play in person.

I know the area where you are located since I went to school at Madison and we spent more than a few weekends in Milwaukee over the years. I hope the Packers sit Jones this week. Let that hamstring heal. Watson too, but that guy needs to find some way to stay healthy. Can't last in this league if you're made of glass. The offense is a little concerning without Jones though. The OL needs to rush block better, and its about time Dillon lived up to the nickname. You'd think he'd be barreling through the line, but he runs like a slight wind can take him down. Rush defense will be on notice this week.

It's not all gloom and doom, just tempering expectations after a week one win against a terrible opponent. If the defense can shutdown the Falcons backfield, it'll be huge. Rookies on offense will see plenty of time. Let's see what Wilson can do. Reed looks great already, Musgrave too. NFC North is there for the taking. Close game, Packers 2-0. GPG!

With the hobbled offense, another game of complimentary football will be needed on the road. The week 7 bye could prove to be a blessing for the youngsters. Improve everyday. GPG

" A.J. Dillon’s lack of production is a growing concern."

So Jonathan, has anyone, anywhere actually analyzed "Dillon's lack of production"?

You know, plot his run production based on the play and were he took the handoff? It is my perception AJD's production from the shotgun, draws, handoffs standing still to run between the Guards...and quick pitches for runs to the perimeter, have gained few, if any yards.

My equal perception is his solid production taking handoffs running downhill, off tackle, between G/T, swing passes in the flat on the move.

Only perceptions of mine. Data would be helpful.

I think he’s been a real good complement to Jones, dependable and inexpensive. I have no problem with sitting Jones and giving the touches to Dillon and the rookie. As long as they hang onto the rock and get some blocking, we’ll be fine.

"he seems determined to prove that he can win with any jamoke at quarterback. "

I had a jamoke shake at Arby's the other day. It was delicious.

I doubt it could play QB effectively, though.

Myers' poor run blocking at center is what will hold the Packers offense back. If Myers can't cut it, the Packers should quickly go with Zach Tom at center and Rasheed Walker at right tackle. We need to run the ball well against the Falcons even with Aaron Jones being questionable to play.

How did you pick Walker at RT instead of Nijman? I think Yosh has been playing more at RT and Walker used only on the LT spot.

Yes We only scored 30+. On the road without our most dangerous WR. Myers and Dillon are holding us back.

Sheeesh.

BOY O BOY...I hate to bring this up...AND I HOPE I AM TOTALLY WRONG...but, when I watch A.J. Dillion run, my mind flashes back to John Brockington as he went down hill. I love what A.J. brings to the Packers backfield and the team as a whole! I hope this weekend against the Falcons erases John Brockington from my mind!!

GO A.J. GO..."run for daylight!"

Dillon is a durable guy who hangs onto the rock and is in the last year of his deal. We should squeeze everything out of him and Jones this year.
