Cory's Corner: J.J. Watt Doesn't Fit

The Packers should pass on Wisconsin's favorite athletic son.

The second J.J. Watt was released by the Houston Texans, Packers fans began crossing their fingers.

Houston did their five-time All-Pro defensive end a favor and allowed him to leave to finally reach his ultimate goal. The Packers would be the obvious pick among many within the state because Watt isn't just from Wisconsin. He is arguably one of the most beloved athletes from the state, being from Pewaukee. I would put Watt right above Joe Thomas, the six-time All-Pro from Brookfield that retired in 2017.

If the Packers brought Watt to Green Bay, he would instantly be loved by all of Packer Nation. The Justin J. Watt Foundation has donated $6.3 million to over 700 schools in 38 states. Watt isn't just a football player, he's a community healer. But he doesn't just cut a check, he actually sweats and does the work.

But despite all that, bringing Watt to Green Bay right now won't make much sense. Watt turns 32 next month and has been stung with plenty of injuries. He has missed 19 games since 2017.

I would rather see the Packers make a serious run at receiver Will Fuller and defensive end Solomon Thomas than make a splash signing with Watt.

Besides, the Packers are nearly over $30 million over the projected salary cap. Of course, the cap can always be finessed with re-negotiating contracts and shifting money around.

The Packers are close, but they are more than one player away, especially if Preston Smith gets released.

Watt is a guy that franchises love to have. He's a team guy that plays the game for all of the right reasons — he just loves it. But, if the Packers really wanted Watt, something should've been worked out before he likely has two years left.

Green Bay has been to the NFC title game two years in a row. Adding Watt isn't going to take the Packers over the edge. But it will put a lot of smiles on people throughout the state.

If it's strictly about football, Watt doesn't fit.

Wrong. Of course he fits. Peppers, didn't fit either. Yet he still made a difference. And isn't that what were really after? I get the cap. But an All-pro? DL? 4-3-4. Gosh! Something we've needed for the last 10 years. Wolf would be all over this guy. When your 1 game from the Super-bowl. Don't rely on want to bees. Watt is the Real Thing! No matter what his age. He's hungry. He needs us, and we need him. TB got Suh.Vea. and invested in all-pros. Roll the Dice. He's an icon. A hero. The better the players, the better the chances.

Peppers was a freakishly healthy and athletic individual who remained so far beyond the bell curve. Assuming Watt will do the same is taking the 5 percent (if that) and ignoring the 95 percent, even without taking into account Watt’s injuries over the last couple of years.

Peppers was a good pickup, but he contributed to our loss in 2014 to Seattle in the NFC championship game by telling Hayward(?) to hit the ground after incepting the ball. There was at least 20-25 yard open space and no Seattle player around. Who knows if we get points out of that, but we didn't. Bad call for him to make.

Peppers over all contributions to the team was close to blah, and when he could have shown his football IQ and worth, he decided to have Burnett(?) take a knee instead of blocking for him, and help get the points to secure a win. I blame that massive error on Peppers part as one of, if not the reason that set up the other reason(s) for the loss. But GB signed him as a game changer for the defense, he lived up to it, however not in GB's favor, but Seattle's.

Watt stood 6-5 and weighed 290 pounds, according to NFL Scouting Combine statistics. The former Wisconsin Badger ran a 4.81 40-yard dash, benched 34 reps, had a 120-inch broad jump, ran a 4.21 in the shuttle, a 6.88 in the cone, and leaped 37 inches for his vertical. With these measurements, don't worry about scheme. Attitude!

He still rated as a top 10 edge defender by PFF this season...if you buy into PFF...and played all 16 games this year. That's on a team going nowhere and giving him no help.

Don't get me wrong...I love Watt. I think he's what star athletes in this day and age should be, and my heart would love to see him in GB. My head says it won't and probably shouldn't happen.

It don’t matter what scheme Barry wants to play. JJ can play any position on the line and produce if healthy. He’s a unique talent. He very well could be the missing piece and play for penny’s to the dollar if he chooses to make a run for a ring. Unfortunately, I suspect he will go and play with his bros in Pittsburgh.

I think you're right, and if it were me--and I have the good relationship he has with his brothers--I'd go to Pittsburgh and play for next to nothing.

The fact that the offense there is riddled with holes (and will be the real question as to whether they're going to contend in 2021) might be the only thing to give him pause.

Barry already said he designs his scheme around his players. A concept that most successful coaches employ. Looking for the square peg in a round hole with the Ted and Dom show and the Unilateral vision of Pettine left this team short of the Big Game.
This is the All-In year, get it done. JJ Watt played under Romeo Crennell's system 3/4 and 4/3 fronts . He can come at you from all over the place. He replaces P.Smith and Lowry.

Actually we do know much of the basic scheme the Packers plan to run. The same one Rams played to become the #1 D in the NFL last year. The Packers wouldn't have Donald, but Watt would fit extremely nicely into the position Donald plays. Despite very different builds they are very similar in play style. Watt was used more on the edge in Houston, but he would excel playing Donald's position and moving all around the DL.

If its strictly about football then of course Watt is a fit. Pro bowl DL that can play any position to pair with Clark is exactly what we need. The question becomes does he fit financially with a significant injury risk. If Watt wants top dollar then he wont fit, but if he wants to come to GB bad enough he could potentially be a great fit.

I know TGR or Stroh (I can't remember who) suggested he'd fit better as a 3-tech, but I still think he'd be your base 5-tech and push Lowry off the roster. Either way, if he was taking Lancaster's or Lowry's base snaps, this defense would have been much better in 2020, and looks stronger in 2021.

I think Watt doesn't fit, but purely for financial reasons, not for football reasons. If it was just football, I think Watt could play a 3 technique "Okie end" in the Packers current configuration. That is largely the same position he played at Wisconsin and for a number of years in Houston. That assumes Barry runs a similar system to what the Packers currently have.

The bigger issue is money. If the cap will be the recently reported $180 million, the Packers are going to have to do some serious work just to get down to the cap much less include a high dollar free agent like Watt. I would love to see JJ in a Packer uniform, but that isn't going to happen because of the financial issues. I expect him to land in Pittsburgh with his brothers.

Thanks Lare, did not know Pittsburgh was even worse than GB. Does the Pittsburgh number include Ben? If he retires as some have guesstimated that would change their number quite a bit. Of course Watt may not want to play there then as their chances of a SB drop to near zero.

You have to look at Pittsburgh's UFAs to get a better picture, and if you know the team, whether there are some players they could trim. Maurkice Pouncey ($8M cap savings) might retire. Should have been cut for performance vs. cost anyway. They could extend two decent but not great CBs in Haden and Stephen Nelson, both 29 IIRC, whose cap numbers are $15M+ and $14M+. Still have UFAs CB Cameron Sutton (68 PFF grade) and RB James Conner to make decisions about. They have four pretty decent CBs, two under contract for big money and two UFAs who are at least decent.

Pittsburgh has Bud Dupree, Juju Smith-Schuster, Alejandro Villanueva (above ave. starting LT who will want something in the teens $14M to $17M AAV?), and CB Mike Hilton as UFAs.

Overall, I'd say Pittsburgh's cap situation is more dire than GB's. Both are bad.

Big Ben is scheduled to have the single highest cap hit in the NFL. Over 41M. He apparently wants to play but is a yr old than Rodgers and clearly defining. He's a shadow of himself. Do you restructure a QB who's in serious decline? That doesn't make much sense, but neither does his current 41M cap number.

Pittsburgh cap situation is much worse than the Packers, who can restructure or resign Rodgers, Adams, Z Smith ongoing with others and cus P Smith to gain as much as 30-40M in space.

Agreed Dobber. I really expected to see some kind of averaging done over a multi-year period to smooth the cap. I suspect the issue may be the contract is what it is and either the NFL or the NFLPA is unwilling to re-open it for fear of being asked for givebacks.

I'm seeing $180M getting thrown around. I don't have info, but there would seem to be no way the cap would reach $175M much less $180M without the owners loaning more money to the players. That is, it makes no sense to me that the actual revenue would translate to $180M.

Maybe the NFL got a lot more revenue than expected even without fans in the stands. I suspect the $180 is even more averaging - loans than previously agreed to.

When talking about the Cap, Gute was strangely upbeat in his presser. Something doesn't compute here. With the loss of revue, and givebacks by the league to their Ad buyers, the Cap hit to the league got to more than $180. I with you on this. That number makes no sense at all. Unless the Owners and Players are using third party talks for cover on restructuring pay scales and Cap, there is going to be a Cap crash like no one has seen before. (Of course the Cap sliding back helps a GM like Gute in short term. That is till the player lawyers start suing the league for collusion)

Schefter reported the $180 million number and he is better than many of the media types when "breaking news". Have heard nothing official.

The X-factor is how much if anything the NFL had to give back to the advertisers. They did play all the games, so that number may not be much which would mean the only real loss was the fans in the stands. How much that is worth I have no idea.

Hard to believe an averaging deal or loans has happened without the media getting wind of it. Very little remains undiscovered for long.

The NGLPA has no leverage. There is a CBA in place. Now the owners do want to massage the cap and the NFLPA will go along with pretty much anything the owners want.

To paraphrase Jim Mora, "Splash signings? Don't talk about splash signings. I just hope we can keep what we have."

The Packers have always been careful in the past to sign contracts where the numbers grew as the cap grew. It might have even panned out this year if the cap had grown at its normal pace. Instead, the Packers will restructure, resign, and, yes, probably cut at least one player they'd rather keep just to get to zero and cover their draft picks. I can't really remember the Packers ever having a true "cap casualty" before this year. It will almost certainly happen this year.

Watt is now a "name" more than a player. He is injury prone, as noted; last season he actually did play all sixteen games, and produced five sacks. And he was paid $17.5 million. Maybe he could play another entire season, but it seems doubtful- how many players improve past the age of 30? This is an emotional response- get the home town guy who was a three time DPOY, and the Packers will have that missing piece to get them to the SB. Besides, he is a free agent- he will be looking at various offers, and making the decision where to go. It's not as if the Packers are his only option. There have been reports that he is interested in either San Francisco (where he could be a rotational player) or Denver.

The packers dont need locker room guys. They need talent. That can stay on the field. At corner and dt. Watt would be a luxury on a team that is 30 million otc with other needs. You want locker room guys? Bring back big dog lewis. Sign richard sherman. And lane taylor. James white from ne i was reading wants to be a packer. Him n aj dillon would be nice. Would you rather have jj watt as your 3rd edge guy or richard sherman and jaire as your corners?? Because jj watts sacks aint gonna matter if josh jackson gets defensive holding on 3rd n 17 the next play.

Id even take a marvin jones type vet wr over watt. They need inside dt help. Rashan gary z smith garvey and ramsey will be the 4 edge guys. Maybe swap ramsey with a late draft pick. Thats just being real. Kevin king is gone. Jackson is a bust. Corner is the number one need for this team in a supposedly weak cb draft.

Forget the emotion of signing a Wisconsin guy and think only of one thing, the need to improve the DL. You know that corner is your biggest need so you're probably not going big ugly in the 1st. You're probably going WR in the 2nd. Why? Because it's time. So likely, you're not drafting a DL until the 3rd, where you're just as likely to draft a RB, OT, or LB. But you know you have cap issues. P. Smith almost certainly is a cut. You really need someone on the line. Someone who can play inside and outside. Snacks? Naw, he's Hoover Dam. Just there to stop the flow. Lowry and Lancaster?... rotational guys who have never had that shining season and never will no matter how much you pray to that little Lombardi shrine in your basement. So you need to go out and get someone. Get him on the cheap and it's just another Lowry. You decide to pay up a little. Why? Because otherwise you almost negate the big contract you've dished out to Clark. He's double and triple-teamed so much you'd think he was surrounded by horny offensive linemen and he was wearing expensive French perfume. JJ Watt is old. He's been injured. He's expensive. But he's exactly who the Packers are able to get, and should get. He was the best defensive player of his generation. A monster. Plays inside and out. You don't lose all that at 32. 75 percent of Watt is better than anything you will get on the market. A defensive line of Z, Watt, Clark, and Gary with Keke rotating in makes you wonder who they double. Will they really leave JJ Watt one-on-one an entire game? It's not just the name, he can still be a force. If not early Ali then late, the guy who can't dance anymore but can take a punch and dish it out. The salary cap?... I don't understand all the moaning. You're losing King, P. Smith, likely Linsley, Jones, and Jamaal, and a few other assorted shmegeges. Rework Rodgers, Bakh, extend Adams... you can find the money. If Watt were ready to retire and fish Pewaukee Lake then that would be one thing. He's not. Superman is old but he can still fly. I don't think he wants to play with his brothers in Pittsburg, he played with them enough when they were kids. I'd sign him in a heartbeat because we have a need and he fits it. If only we had taken TJ... sorry, couldn't help myself.

I don't know enough to agree or disagree, but you make a thoughtful and insightful and intriguing case that adds a lot to the discussion.
Plus, the last two comments I've read from you have also had me laughing, which I truly appreciate.
All I'd ask is for maybe more paragraphs. Then again, I have a serious case of ADHD, and the medication only helps somewhat -- so maybe it's just me.
The thing is, it would be sad to me if your worthy comments were lost in a big block of letters. Some paragraphs may help your message to be more accessible.
P.S. Did you used to play second base for the Milwaukee Braves way back when?

Swisch, I will take your advice and that of my 7th grade English teacher at Peckham Jr. H.S. , Mrs. Clevetter, and write in paragraphs, although I always had trouble deciding when to make the breaks. As my daughter would say, "It's so random." Did I play second base for the Braves,?...no, that was Red Schoendienst. Johhny Logan was the shortstop and he was one of my favorite players. I did have a brief tryout with the Pirates but they for some reason thought I should be able to hit as well as field so it didn't go anywhere.

Johnny, I think it's pretty cool that you were good enough to get a tryout with a major league team.
Plus, it would indicate you had a lot of fun playing baseball at least through your high school years.
After my comment to you, I looked up both Logan and Schoendienst and saw my error. Both seem to have had good long lives.
It seems Logan had his best seasons in the later 1950s at the same time the Braves had their best seasons -- including two trips to the World Series against the mighty Yankees, one of which they won.
At the Wikipedia entry about Logan, there's a link in the footnotes to an nice remembrance of him in the Journal-Sentinel, with a funny story about Logan and Eddie Matthews both charging Don Drysdale for headhunting.
I like that Logan retired in Milwaukee until his death in 2013. All things being equal, I'd like to live in Wisconsin (my place of birth), too -- but like the Braves, ended up in Georgia.
***
As for paragraphs, I go with what I call the Mike Royko School of writing.
Having lived much of my life in and around Chicago, he was a civic treasure as a columnist for local affairs until his somewhat early death in about 1997.
Also, I think he was widely syndicated around the country, so you may remember him. (Apparently you're older than me, as I was born in 1962, only a year before Logan retired with the Pirates).
Royko is one of my favorite writers of all time, both insightful and funny -- which seem to be the case with you in good measure.
Another thing about Royko is that he was intelligent but also readable, educational but also entertaining -- and I think his short paragraphs were a big part of that.
I was taught in school to change paragraphs with each change of of ideas, or even a shift in the same idea. (In your comment, it seems a break would come between "It's so random."/Did I play second base for the Braves?)
I think that's still a good rule of thumb, but it seems another good reason to break things up is to make the writing easier to take in for the average reader.
Having ADHD into my adulthood, I'm very sensitive to readability -- although I would agree that different styles of writing can be effective and attractive.
My problem is sometimes running on too long, so please pardon that in this case.
I just hope the shorter paragraphs help make my longer comments easier to get through.
All the best to you.

Seems many are looking for, and needed, an electrical Watt surge for the Packers defense. This is an obvious socket for the Packers to plug into and most just want to plug in with abandonment, while disregarding how much is the cost for each expected mega-Watt, and how much electricity is received, and whether a total blackout or flickering is more or less likely based on expected use of the new socket, based on overload due to already faulty wiring, which seems to happen often with these level of electric suppliers.

I've said before that most, and I mean most FA signings that are supposed to put a team over the top don't, it just makes them more highlighted on talk shows with the topic being how they aren't or how the team is now infected with another issue that keeps them from getting the boulder up and over the hill of success, an SB.

How many players that GB needs to retain, but will be let go to accommodate Watt, and does that put the onus on Watt to ensure he can cover the losses GB had to accept for the risk/reward.

I guess like with Joe Barry, we'll just have to wait and see, and then pick sides when Watt-ever happens, happens.

Ok lets say Watts cooperates and plays for less.. And the management re-works contracts..And some point during the up coming season. Watts gets injured.. I agree it is not good option.. When Julius Peppers came, they got their monies worth luckily.. But in this case it could blow up.. And if it does, especially if they lose both Jones and Williams.. The Lafleur bubble could burst, regardless of how great the offense performs.. They need another cb.. along with a inside LB...

The key this year is to find underrated players at affordable prices. That means the draft and possibly during cut downs at the end of camp will be the resources that the team draw from. Watt is neither. As others have noted it would be preferable to keep some of our own instead of high price FA’s. But even that may not be possible. It’s BPA at the best price from now on. And on another note, I would have preferred Barry as a linebackers coach and maybe as assistant DC rather than the actual DC. But the anger at Pettine would not allow for that. I see that his position with the Bears best suits his personality and abilities.

WATT is a SNAKE and is an ally of the OX...odds favor him outperforming this coming season. Watt makes everyone around him better; he is the leader the defense has lacked since Peppers retired, but a better one. My hunch is the boy that grew up with the childhood dream of playing for the Packers has yet to check that off his bucket list...the red WI hoodie in his goodbye video may have been the tell--premeditated he's coming home...just need both sides to work out the details.

Will Fuller (DOG) is an injury prone 7 life path in a personal 7 year. Only being in his enemy year could be any worse. MVS (DOG) is in the exact same scenario--7 life path in a personal 7 year. Pick your poison. If MVS's failures have finally shaped him into a worthwhile roster mainstay, Fuller is an afterthought, not to mention we have more pressing needs elsewhere.

It's not a matter of "doesn't fit", but rather where Packer fans sit as opposed to where they were last season. All I heard is that the Packers did nothing to fill their needs, but now they want another edge presence? While I can sympathize with the idea of Watt playing on the interior, it would be a waste to spend resources on more defensive line help when your #2 corner spot is a blatant weakness. Besides, pass rushes tend to get way better when there's nobody open behind them anyways, so I think fans are fixated on the wrong thing.

Here's my theory: fans only want players they know and like rather than which player fits.

I'm not totally against the idea of getting JJ Watt, what Badger fan doesn't want him to be a Packer? But I think it's completely irresponsible to bang the gavel for defensive line help when there's obvious holes elsewhere on the roster.

As usual the author is clueless. Watt would be an ideal fit playing Donald's role in the new D scheme, which will be very similar to the Rams D last year. They need a 34 DL to play next to Clark. There is risk of injury that has to suppress his contract. But he's a great scheme fit, aside from injury and contract issues!

According to reports, Watt is leaning towards signing with the Cleveland Browns. If that's the case, the Packers need smarter players than him to start on their DL.
