Cory's Corner: Steer Clear Of Shiny Objects
Turn your head away from the bright, shiny object.
Jamal Adams has wanted out of New York for awhile now. The Jets safety is even quoted as saying, "I'm trying" when someone brought up if he's going to get traded to the Cowboys.
Adams is a solid player. He's the best blitzing safety in football and he is also good in coverage and in stopping the run.
Many Packers fans are thinking that the door is wide open for Adams to come to Green Bay. Would Adams fill a need? Sure. The Packers would add much-needed depth to the backend of their defense and defensive coordinator Mike Pettine would love having a runaway freight train at safety.
But, it's not going to happen.
First of all, Adams has two years left on his deal. He's upset because the Jets haven't reached out to him with an offer because of his strong play. In order to get Adams, it's going to take a first, third and maybe a fifth. That's a lot of capital for a position that many teams just don't value that much.
Next, Adams wants to be paid like one of the highest-paid defensive players in the league. The Packers have $13.8 milion in cap space according to Over The Cap. That doesn't leave a lot of wiggle room to pay a player that wants to be one of the highest-paid defenders in the league.
Finally, Adams wants to play for Dallas. I realize that Baltimore, Houston, Kansas City, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Seattle were also on his list. But he wants to go back to Texas where he's from.
Adams is the newest shiny toy out there, but bringining him in also means that the Packers won't be able to keep the entire lot of David Bakhtiari, Corey Linsley, Devin Funchess and Kevin King.
And even if the Packers had the available capital, why would you want someone that is being disgruntled with two years left on his deal? It sets a bad precedent and others may follow suit. The Packers don't need that, and second-year coach Matt LaFleur really doesn't need that.

The Packers are good at safety, need to focus on signing their own and keeping those good vibes in the locker room.
The Packers signed one of those shiny object guys a few years ago in M. Bennett and he turned out to be a complete A..hole!
I’m not saying don’t sign FA if it’s right (like last year) but sign your Stars first!

It’s tempting and I don’t have a problem with wanting to get paid. Teams routinely cut players before the contract is completed so what is wrong with the player doing the same, especially one on a rookie deal which is slotted to eliminate rookie contract hold outs.
He is proven to be the type of player who could move a defense from top 15 to a Top 5. I also don’t think it will take a first, third and fifth. It might not even take a first. Another All-pro just moved for what I believe is a third and fifth. I’m not saying do it at all cost and I wouldn’t for a first, third and fifth but put your foot in there and see what it would take and if the trade is a 2nd and fifth rounder, strongly consider an offer. Look what Reggie and Charles did for this team. J. Adams is a similar type of difference maker.
Let’s say you can sign him for 15-16M per year and you build your D around Adams for the next 5 years, which coincides with Rodgers last years. This would be a bold move, one that could get the Packers another Title and I don’t think Gutey would be afraid of doing. It all comes down to the price and which players you don’t sign or cut over the next year to do it. Other then Rodgers and maybe Adams or Bak (although not as much last year) we don’t have another “difference maker”. IMO, we don’t have one of those on our D, even Clarke isn’t in that category.

He could be what you see him as, but I just think it’s too early to conclude that with certainty. I do not think what he is doing at this point is wise as a result. I don’t want him at this point. Happy with Amos and Savage and saving some cap flexibility. Just not the right time or position.

Gutey has to give it a look. Dynamic playmakers are exactly what this defense needs. Maybe go all in for the next two or three years. If we fall, we go down swinging.
Bridesmaids are never the happiest girls at the dance.
Let's swing for the fences, unless he's not a good teammate or isn't coachable.

Stay away from Adams. He is not a team player. He is in it for himself and the money. He is also highly overrated himself.

I don’t really like players who put their own needs ahead of the team. It’s a long season and the less disharmony, the better.

Explain to me how he is “highly overrated”? He made back to back All Pro and voted team MVP the last two years. So, he is recognized by his teammates to be a leader as well. He’s obviously one of the better D players out there right now. In addition, he is only 24 years old and injury free.

The more I read about him the more I don’t like the way he is treating the Jets so, even thou he is rated as one of the best, Packers should stay away. Like others have said it is a team sport and you need cohesiveness.

In the matter of a couple hours, you've gone from he's the greatest thing since sliced bread to we should steer clear of him. I would never want you to be making the decision if I was ever in the hospital and the doctors asked you if they should pull the plug or not. ;)

Talent wise yes, but after taking the time to read some of his actions and other comments no. I keep an open mind on subjects and try to understand others point of view which occasionally changes mine. I think that is a better approach in life then having a closed mind and not willing to listen to others.

Don't you think Gutsey has already looked at that situation? I suspect, don't know, that the list was compiled by Adams (probably agents) after talking to several GMs in the league and these are the teams that expressed more interest and can meet his financial demands.
Probably want the teams to get into a bidding war, but the Jets have to go along with the plan. I don't think Dallas can swing the deal he wants.

Cory, the headline struck a long-forgotten note from when a site called Coldhardfootballfacts.com had a well done research article on WRs, calling them “shiny hood ornaments “
Football is a team game, we’ve already got a good team, we’re already going to lose some good players to free agency because we can’t pay them. We’re fine at safety.

Agree, steer away. If he wanted to play in GB, that's a starting point. He doesn't! Enough said. I kind of like where we're at with safety right now anyway.

And this article also applies to many other players. I realize that Gutie is not Thompson but paying big bucks for a player who is discontented with his team already is a big red flag. And that goes for other players besides safety. And let’s not forget, the team already has a bunch of good players coming up for contract next year.

I notice so often these sites come up with some ideas of players for the Packers really have no need or desire to want. Seems like controversial players always pop up where they "should" be a Packer! Why is that?

He left GB off his places he'd go to, which is more likely for near 90% of FA's or those looking for trade.
Whether we need him or not is moot, the question is why he won't come to GB.
There's a reason he feels this and it isn't what some here want it to be or deflect it by calling him a malcontent.
He wants out of NY, can anyone really say they wouldn't either.
The best players are hired guns after the first contract and some are able to be such sooner. Hired guns always bring something that many won't like, but that comes with the hiring of such.
P.S.
Rodgers is not an advantage for GB in the FA market, though he should have been and should be still.

These are only the significant signings. There were other signings of players who played a much smaller role. The only reason there were next to no FA signings between 2010 and 2018 was because Thompson refused to go after any, not because players didn't want to come here.

The only ones you can claim as argument, though a weak one, are the Smith's, Amos, Turner and Funchess, as the rest are part of two other eras. With that said, none of the 5 were or are top FA's and certainly don't hold sway as to where they won't go, which is the premise of the article about Jamal Adams.
Let's remember also, Reggie White got players to come to GB, and Rodgers has drawn dick, especially for the offense, unless Graham is your hero. Even Peppers chose the Bears and Cutler when still in his prime over GB and Rodgers. But we did get him when he was more dull and old, and you can boast of his contributions to another, as it was three years of near nothing for what was hoped or expected. He was better than the other elephants on the defense at the time at least.

You made a blanket statement that 90% of FA's won't come to GB, without a shred of evidence to back that up. You never limited this claim to this current front office.
I refuted that claim by listing numerous, quality FA's who have chosen to come here over the years. Another weak claim on your part was that none of the five recent FA signings were quality signings that wouldn't have had interest elsewhere. Adrian Amos was a young, respected safety from Chicago who had a solid year for GB. Z. Smith: 13.5 sacks, 17 TFL, 37 QB hits. P. Smith: 12 sacks, 11 TFL, 23 QB hits.
These were all young, healthy, ascending players that came to GB. You're argument is weak and invalid, with no facts to back it up.

Our safety positions are no where near a weakness for us. We do not need to spend that kind of capital on a position of strength.
