Around the NFC North: Free Agency Review

Everyone thinks they're smart right now.

Free agency isn't over, exactly, but just about all the exciting stuff has already happened, and we had plenty of excitement in the NFC North. Let's go over some of the key additions and subtractions in the North.

Vikings

  • The big news is that Kirk Cousin left for Atlanta and the Vikings are already making moves to try to get a QB in the draft. Cousins was an above average QB a lot of the time and a very below average QB some of the time for Minnesota. We don't know for sure whether the Vikings will be able to replace Kirk with a better QB -- grass ain't always greener -- but we know whoever they replace him with will be put into a pretty good situation right away with plus coaching, a plus offensive line, and two first-round picks at WR.
  • The team also let Danielle Hunter hit the road, replacing him with Jonathan Greenard and Andrew Van Ginkel. Greenard isn't quite at Hunter's level, but he has been a very good NFL player when healthy. Van Ginkel, a former Badger, is probably about average as a pass rusher but brings a lot of other skills to the position that you rarely see in an edge rusher.
  • Almost forgot. They also signed Sam Darnold to either be their bridge QB or sacrificial lamb. They hope he can maybe be their Baker Mayfield, but it's likely he'll be more of a Nick Mullens 2.0.
  • In the most annoying move of the off-season, Aaron Jones chose to not have a chance at playoff success next year in exchange for an extra $1mm. He signed with the Vikings as I'm sure you've heard.
  • The Vikings also filled some other holes at linebacker and o-line, but nothing that really moves the needle a ton.

Bears

  • The Bears also made a big QB move, trading Justin Fields for a copier that could convert into a copier with scanning capabilities in 2025. They will likely replace him with Caleb Williams. Godspeed.
  • Their other splash move on the trade market was trading for 57-year-old Keenan Allen who makes $40mm per year (all numbers are approximate and adjusted for Bears terribleness). It's definitely true that Keenan Allen and DJ Moore will ease a rookie QB into the league more than like Velus Jones and Dante Pettis would but you just have to laugh at trading draft capital (when you'll be left with four (4!) total picks) and then overpaying an already slow receiver who was drafted the same year as Eddie Lacy. Eddie Lacy has white hair!
  • In other hilarious news, the Bears made the first move of free agency by signing De'Andre Swift to a three-year $24mm deal. You might know Swift from his history of being terrible for the Lions. The Lions, who drafted him high, ditched him last off-season and immediately spent a top-12 pick on a running back and signed David Montgomery. Montgomery had about the same number of yards as Swift last year and twice the touchdowns. He signed a three-year $18mm deal with Detroit after the Bears chose not to re-sign him. You can't make this stuff up.
  • The Bears also added Gerald Everett at tight end, former Packer Jonathan Owens, and Kevin Byard. Meh, double meh and triple meh.

Lions

  • Imagine someone telling you a year-and-a-half ago that the Bears and Vikings were looking for a new QB but the Lions were happily going into another season with Jared Goff and might even extend them. And that their biggest move in free agency was signing a nose tackle (OK, you probably could've guessed that).
  • The nose tackle is DJ Reader who has been one of the best run stopping defenders at any position over the past five years or so. Reader would be a great get for just about every team, but just feels superfluous to this Lions team. They already had a great run defense. They need to defend the pass better. They need another edge across from Aidan Hutchinson. Reader will likely be a pro-bowl level run stopper in Detroit, can't really argue that. I would've loved him in Green Bay. Just have to question the value of adding him to this Lions' team.
  • I do have to admit that the Lions finally did try to improve their pass D with a legitimate move. They traded for Tampa Bay corner Carlton Davis. Davis broke onto the scene in the Tom Brady Super Bowl era when he was widely recognized as one of the premier man corners in the league. He hasn't really gotten that level of recognition over the past two seasons, but he is still a great man corner. Which leads me to guess that the Lions may be going all in on Aaron Glenn's original plan to play press man, try to get pressure with four and stop the run with a heavy line and a heavy box. It works in New Orleans. Now we'll see if the Lions can pull it off, finally.
  • They also replaced departing tackle Jonah Jackson with Kevin Zeitler (ancient) and Graham Glasgow (JAG). They'll probably still have one of the top-5 or so offensive lines, but it'll be a little worse.

I'll go on record right now that Caleb Williams is going to bust. Especially if taken by the Bares. Didn't want to do Combine. Pro Day nothing special. Rumors of less than acceptable mental makeup.

I will not go as far as saying he will be a bust but then I guess it depends on how you define bust.

I believe he will be a slight upgrade from Fields at best. The Bears should have kept Fields and traded the #1 pick for many more picks. That is what i was worried they would do and I am glad they did not.

I'm afraid that with some veteran receivers around him and an ok O line, he might be the real deal. Of course, I hope I'm wrong.

Weird not to mention the Bears signed four(4!) FA O linemen. Only one is a guaranteed starter but at the very least they added a lot of competition there.

The Vikings could be trying to maneuver up the draft board to get one of the top three QB prospects in their trade with the Texans. Or maybe they select two in an attempt to break their cycle of not selecting good candidates or being unable to develop them--they've brought veterans through much of their history.

It looks like the Lions wasted a third round pick on Hooker if they're planning to Give Goff and extension. He spent most of last year recovering from injury, and according to Campbell, they really have no idea what they have here, although he noted some "improvement" (whatever that means).

The Bears are a team that are always chasing their short tails around in circles. Desperate teams do desperate things. K. Allen is old, but a very established receiver; and with no one else on the roster of note other than Moore, they must have thought it was worth the 110th pick and the money. Allen wasn't taking the pay cut the Chargers wanted him to, so he ended up getting traded. Who knows, maybe the Bears think they can contend--they saw how good Stroud was last year and they might be harboring fantasies that they could do the same thing this season.

The Vikings would be best served by staying where they are and drafting McCarthy. I believe McCarthy will be the best value QB of the draft.

McCarthy will be a top 5 pick. I wouldn't be shocked if NE took him, instead of Maye.

Vikings always win the offseason. Bears starting over. Lions on the slow slide back to the basement after their once-in-a-lifetime season.

I think the Packers did pretty well. I knew they were going to get a Safety but I didn't think it'd be the guy at the top of the list. Jacobs for Jones probably helps. Dillon helps. We might resign Ford, that would help.

Since 2017, the Bears have drafted two 1st round QBs. One at #2 overall and one at #11 overall, trading up for both while giving up significant draft capital in the process. One has become a journeyman backup, now on his 3rd team, the other recently traded for a ham sandwich, with a conditional bag of chips thrown in.

Now, according to most reports, they are about to draft Caleb Williams with #1 overall pick. There is a fine line between confidence and arrogance. After watching his post pro day interview, I'm leaning more towards the latter concerning Mr. Williams.

One would think the law of averages would eventually benefit the Bears in these decisions. But, considering their success in drafting/developing QBs since the first manned moon landing, perhaps Mr. Williams should consider changing his uni number to something other than #13.

The question as always is do they draft chopped liver, or do they take a prime cut and turn it into chopped liver.

Exactly as I'm hearing from other statements. An abnormal arrogance that could likely derail his confidence when reality hits him in the literal face. If anyone can screw up a QB, it's Duh Bares. There is obviously a coward Bares fan here that is hoping that his team doesn't make a mistake yet again. Not going to happen.

Nicely written sarcastic article and related comments.
This is why I like CHTV so much.
It helps that there is ample fodder.
Da Bears still really suck.

I don't generally go for the sarcastic articles myself - there's always an air of arrogance to them.

A competitive division readies a team for the finals. It doesn't allow a team to get ahead of itself.

It never really occurred to me before but the Vikings have NEVER drafted and developed their own QB that was good! In their HISTORY! Culpepper flirted with being good for a couple of years and that's it. Joe Kapp, Fran Tarkington, Randal Cunningham, Warren Moon, Bret Farve and Cousins all came via trades. The Bears have to go into the history vault to find anyone decent unless you count McMahon. The Lions had Stafford but got rid of him. In that time the Packers had Starr, Rogers and now Love ( they did trade for Farve). Pretty remarkable and explains why we've won four Super Bowls and those three teams combined have won exactly one. Tarkenton was actually drafted by the Vikings in 1961. In '67 he was traded to the NY Giants, and subsequently traded back to the Vikings in '72.

Other than that, I can't think of another QB that Minnesota drafted that amounted to much.

I am not happy about trading Fields, and even more disappointed that the team waited until trading him, to do right by him. There are worse mentors then Russell Wilson.

I loved the Allen trade. Yes he is over 30, and has a high cap number. The Bears however, had the room to absorb that number, and Allen is coming off of a 1200 yard, 7 TD season for a team that under performs more then any other. Moore and Allen are going to be a tough duo to stop, no amount of snark changes that.

Williams will come into a good situation as far as having play makers around him. If Chicago triples down on WR at 9, and gets Nabers or Odunze, that will be one paper, in of the more formidable trios in the league.

I still think Detroit is the cream of the crop in the division, but I do believe Chicago will not be as far behind the Packers, as GB fans think. If the Packers young players take a step back, which is possible, that 2 spot is up for grabs.

I think Minnesota will win 3 games, and trade Jefferson mid season.
