Confessions of a Polluted Mindset - No, You Weren't Booted

The Weekly Packers Brain Drain from Jersey Al.

Booted? - Sorry for the login issues this weekend. While the situation sucked, I did get a kick out of the panicked emails I got wondering what was said that got you booted. I guess that means I've successfully put the fear of isolation in your hearts? But seriously, it was kind of cool to see how many people were genuinely upset that they couldn't check in to CheeseheadTV.  I thank you all for your loyalty.

You don't say. OBJ - Yeah, there wasn't a chance in hell OBJ was ever going to come to Green Bay last year, despite what so many hopeful Packers fans desired.

Whoops! - If you have purchased the draft guide, first of all, THANK YOU for supporting CheeseheadTV. However, one of the commenters here (stevebooth) pointed out an error with two of the trivia questions. This was likely a copy-and-paste error on the final draft, as it was correct when I uploaded it. Anyway, for those of you who purchased the guide (and even those who haven't) here is what the two questions and answers should have looked like. I'll post the correct answers at the very end of this post. Try to guess the answers without googling!

3. The Packers have twice had the first overall pick in the draft. One pick was Paul Hornung. Who was the other?  A. Tobin Rote  B. Randy Duncan  C: Babe Parilli  D: Dan Currie

4. A current NFL owner’s father was an offensive tackle drafted by the Green Bay Packers. Who is this father-son combination?  A. Jim and Jimmy Haslam  B. Harry and David Tepper  C. Al and Stan Kroenke  D. Morris and Jeff Lurie

Safety Crush - The Packers HAVE TO draft a safety, right? The current object of my desire is Sydney Brown from Illinois. He's a five-year starter, a consensus second-team All-American and the Big 10 Defensive Player of the Year in 2022. He's an exceptional athlete, with a RAS score of 9.68 and can play in both deep zone or in the box. His only physical shortcoming is his height at 5'10", but he does have a 40.5" vertical, so that's not too much of a concern.

Team Player - Aaron Jones recently told Packers.com's Wes Hodkiewicz the following: “This is still the most I’ve ever made, and it still has me as the second-highest paid for the backs, so it matched up with the market. I didn’t want to be greedy. I’m a team player.”  Now, I have no doubt that Jones is sincere in saying he is a team player. But as I've written here before, the likely alternative the Packers gave him was to be cut and then good luck getting the same contract from another team. Jones took the sure thing Top-2 RB money and saved the Packers 12 million in cap space in the process, A true win-win.

Don't forget: The CHTV Draft Guide is now available to order right here.

Trivia answers:

3.  B  Randy Duncan
4.  A  Jim and Jimmy Haslam

How did you do?

Nailed both, but you know what they say about blind pigs and acorns.

I'm coming around to the idea of Brown. He's shown he can play in a conference which asks and he's had some longevity.

Booted... I was one of those who emailed Al in a panic. I was like, okay I drop a swear word every once in a while but ONLY when I'm REALLY trying to make a point. Kind of like when I use CAPS but far, far less often. I know one thing, I didn't like it!

OJB... SIGH...Who cares? No offense to any one who wanted him but he just strikes me as a dude who could NEVER appreciate Green Bay for what it is. I mean common, our Stadium is in the middle of residential neighborhoods! Who gives a damn about night life when your surrounded buy a town and fans who TRUELY love you! OJB could NEVER get the awesomeness in that.

Sydney Brown... I love Brown. Matter of fact, I've drafted him in just about every mock draft I've done in the 3rd round. The kid hits like a truck for his size and can play multiple spots. Hopefully if he's there in the 3rd Gute drafts him but at 5' 10" I wonder if he's on Gutes board.

CHTV Draft Guide... I'm STILL going through it. I've gotten it every year and one of the things I like the most is when the draft happens I can go back and take a look at what the draft guide had to say about a particular player. It's a lot of fun reading and money well spent. Don't start the draft without it!!!

I got booted. It said I couldn't use my "fthisjack" name anymore. I wrote a scathing message to the admin thinking that the sensitive counter culture got their panties in a bundle and offended their sensibilities. I was reinstated and thought they accepted my argument only to find out it happened to others. So I apologize to the powers that be.

I have a feeling if GB wants him, they will likely have to use a 2nd round pick on him.

He will be in the second round. The best safety in the draft. Willie Wood was 5'-10 with a similar vertical. The entire Illinois secondary is excellent. teamed with Kerby Joseph in '21. Ergo the Need to acquire More picks in the second round, Three preferably. Gutedkunst should stay away until post draft free agents need to be brought onboard.
They don't know shit from shinola picking safeties.

Booted. (Raises hand) Booted was my first thought for a brief moment.

Then I thought, “No way! I’ve been really good lately!”

OBWho?

Safety Crush: Sydney Brown. He’s one in my handful of Safeties I’d like Gutekunst to take. For sure. I want 2 from this grouping:

Brian Branch - complete & wouldn’t argue
JL Skinner - size/speed with all the goods
Jammie Robinson - do it all running mate
Sydney Brown - legit despite size
Quindell Johnson - late pick mondo upside

Team player, Aaron Jones has always been such. I'm still buzzing over Love inviting he and the WRs to California for private workouts. That's respect shown to a team player & team leader. I think we'll see a lot of "feel good" stuff this year that will bring this team together more than we've seen in years. Common sense football stuff that works.

That's what I'm expecting to see, and it certainly will be welcome again in Green Bay.

CHTV Draft Guide: Support CHTV and enjoy their best work. This year's guide is tops.

I suck at trivia.

So you didn't love the "feel good" of three 13 win seasons in a row? You want a bunch of young happy guys losing games? Is that going to be more entertaining? I truly hope the "feel good" isn't just the off season workouts, but only time will tell. Feel good to me was the back shoulder throw to Adams, finding Cobb or Lazard on a broken play for a first down. Or the celebrations of Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams. Jaire racing to break up a pass; no-name Rasul Douglas with pick sixes to win games. And Rodgers always gave GB a chance to win; he could carry the team for much of his career and have a ton of wins even when they didn't keep a lot of talent around him. I wonder if Love will give us that feeling or if he'll just be a good game manager and it will depend more on the rest of the squad.

We've had such a wonderful ride of "feel good" stuff over the last decade, and much was due to the guy that is moving to the east coast. Game-winning Hail Mary's, RELAX, tons of positive regard from Rodgers for many, many of his teammates. (there's plenty of positive comments by him about Rasul, Davante, offensive line guys, Tonyan, Lazard, Jaire, etc).

I hate this narrative that Rodgers was somehow a poison in the locker room. That's just not the truth, but fans that hate him tell themselves a story to bolster their attitudes. He's been close to a lot of his team mates and they weren't all starters or stars either. It's normal for young QB to work out with new teammates early in their career. But you don't really see it with guys who have played 10+ years in the league.

I actually tried to make a “work from home” parody comment over on APC the other day, and their system automatically flagged and deleted it, LOL. Apparently “irony” isn’t built into their algorithm, despite having a sarcasm font feature.

There was also some discussion in the comments over there yesterday about the login issue here. I will point out, since we are talking about issues, that I have not been able to use the login button at the top of the page for months, it just doesn’t work. And it’s really annoying that when I hit reply to a comment and it brings up the login screen, when it finishes it reloads the page, losing the place I was in the comments. Would love to see whoever is the tech guy here at CHTV fix those issues, because honestly it makes this sites interface really annoying.

I think it was Infante who said they considered Barry Sanders but he “didn’t fit their offense” which prompted the universal reply “Then it’s time to change your offense!”

But yes, Mandarich was NOT considered a reach at the time. I remember going from stoked to grossly disappointed very quickly. I was hoping he’d help the finesse Packers kick the big bad Bears in the teeth. That failed to happen.

Booted - Just a delayed April fools joke.
But the more Murphy talks about the Rodgers
proposed trade. The more I have lock jaw.
Seems; he No longer wants to comment.
Maybe that should have been his answer
when the Do you think we're idiots came up.

And as much as I think OBJ is close to retirement.
Why is BAHK now considering retirement- soon?
Wouldn't it be interesting; that Bahk gets to
Retire a Packer. But we have to Trade Rodgers.

So you've now switched from Branch to S. Brown?
IMO - The higher the safety pick. The bigger the failure.
I'll take Robinson.

Love that we have a Team player.
But I still wouldn't back off from B. Robinson.

Branch, Skinner, Brown, Johnson - any one of those Safeties paired with Jammie Robinson would fix that position for years.

I like Jammie Robinson a ton as a Safety pick for the Packers. Great player.

That's the way I'm looking at it. Take two, Day 2.

As for RB Bijan Robinson, taking him at 15 sets us back in other need areas, but he ranks as Athlon's #3 Player Overall. Take him and deal with other needs later. At 15, Robinson is a win.

Immediately contributes as an RB3 (with a wink) plus slot receiver. Prime RB talent who will be for all intents & purposes RB1 the moment he walks through the door.

Count me in on RUNNING THE ROCK +50 attempts/game. It will wear opposing Ds clean out, opening up everything for Love in the passing game. That's our best course.

He’s a very good receiver for a RB, but he’s not a very good slot per se. To use him like that we’d effectively just be taking a true WR off the field or, probably, Jones. In most years I would love us to take him. This year I’d love someone to pay us to take our draft spot if he falls that far.

That’s acknowledging that he’d be a great piece next year and after. However we need more shots at talent to develop this year and RB is a position where starting immediately is possible. I would pass unless we can’t get a motivated buyer. If he’s as good as many think, we should see a team want to jump.

As for S, we have to get one. Even if Moore/Savage/Ford actually start, none are on more than one year deals. We need depth at least now and development prospects too. I am not convinced Carpenter is a true S.

I look at how Barry uses them, or did last year, and I wonder how any fit. Does the team see Branch’s testing as unrepresentative of play speed? If so grab him, but if not, all the instincts in the world only go so far. I’ve been for getting him, written him off and am gradually returning to the view that since we have to get safeties, he’s the one that plays best on film. However, I just don’t know if he’s only a slot at the NFL level, albeit a good one. He’d have to drop and we’d need to trade back before I’d take him.

Brown is definitely one of next in line. Athletically, he’s great. I do worry about his instincts and ability to read the field. He relies on his speed and burst heavily rather than anticipation . That’s a tougher challenge at the NFL level. He does seem to be zine suited, which, at least this year, might be a plus. However, he was used as a box S overwhelmingly. That could be good if his recognition skills improve or are actually good enough to play deeper. I think he takes time to develop as a true starter.

Jammie Robinson may be the best tackling true S (not Box specialist) in the class. Other than Branch, he may be the most ready to play now of the class and has more obvious ability to play the full range of the S role.

Christopher Smith may be the best deep prospect. He strikes me more as a deep cover specialist though. He’s a smaller guy like Savage, and I think would similarly struggle in the Barry system as a run stopper. Why mention him? Because I think all of these are potentially better closer or deeper but not both, at least now, except maybe Robinson.

Do you take the best and accept role limitations? I’ve ignored some pure box types here if that’s the case, or do you try to find one who may not be as good overall at one sub role, but is better overall potentially?

As I’ve said on many occasions, there are very few players who excel at the range of things asked of his safeties by Barry. I don’t see any in this class that are that. Robinson might be the one who can be closest earliest. Brown might be the best in time. I fear the system is the problem here as much as the players.

I feel the same about Branch. Exactly the same. I'm not an underwear Olympics guy, as I think 40s should be run on grass, full gear. Even then you wouldn't get the play speed component of read & react.

His only knock is speed, on a track in shorts.

Is he a fit? Tough to say who the fit is, just about anywhere. As we are left guessing, I'm holding to my best guess that Barry, LaFleur and Gutekunst are trying their damnedest to build a hybrid of SEA's Legion of Boom Defense.

Kevin King was his first shot. Tall CB who didn't pan out as expected. Not Richard Sherman.

Darnell Savage. He's no Earl Thomas.

Eric Stokes seen as a faster Byron Maxwell? Tough to tell with him out with the knee & ankle, to return when?

Is Tarvarius Moore at S a faster Kam Chancellor? Oddly, Tariq Carpenter's physical profile fits more closely, but Moore's play style definitely fits, and his physical profile is close.

That D showed a combination of man, 3 deep zone and pressure blitzing. Seems to fit with Barry's gripes. It also fits with the D ran in Tampa Bay when they won the Super Bowl in 2003. We have that ILB duo to match Shelton Quarles and Derrick Brooks. John Lynch was their SS.Ronde Barber & Dwight Smith the CBs. Warren Sapp. Simeon Rice. Anthony McFarland and Greg Spires, wreaked havoc up front.

That SEA D had versatile LBs too. Bruce Irvin & Bobby Wagner? I think they want same from the Safety position under Barry, that meshing of positions Kam Chancellor was so good at doing for SEA into LB roles. That meshing of LB into EDGE roles like a switch. Etc.

Knowing what little we know of Barry, this kind of makes sense, doesn't it?

No one in that SEA secondary were considered speed freaks. They just were able to run everything, press, man, zone, and were a very technique sound/highly competitive unit.

That's what makes me think Brian Branch is the pick up top for the Packers. Been coming around to it just like you have. Kam Chancellor was a SS. I'll be damned if Tarvarius Moore isn't the closest fit we might possibly find to emulate Chancellor. He's a big fast beast who can range, ball skill and hit like a ton v. run.

You know who else is? JL Skinner. That's why I've been on him like flies on you know what for GB in this draft.

For us fans, it's all a guessing game, but that's my best guess as to what we are seeing. Need more pieces at EDGE, S, NT, CB, and another 3-5T. It's just 5 positions! We can swing that. Currently 10 picks with more on the way.

This is why I believe we've seen the latitude with Barry. Gary and Stokes going down with knees was no help last season in moving this possible plan/vision forward.

I agree on passing on Robinson, CW. We have other holes that need to be filled. I think the Pack would find a willing trade down partner to a QB hungry team to get more picks in the meat of the draft.

Your four-
Branch, ? Long Speed keeping up - Reads ?
Skinner- Tweener ? S or LB Doesn’t play heads up.
Brown - Another guy who uses his hands too much.
Johnson - Box safety w/ Tackling issues in 2022.
My Two-
IMO- Robinson and Daniel Scott would be best.
And if I wanted a CB - DJ Turner can play all -over.

You: Robinson - taking him at 15 sets us back in other need areas,
I disagree. Dillion may not be here next year.
The only position it sets us back is Edge. The strength of this draft!
TE only in a trade Down. But the holes are @ safety and DL back-up.
And you could pass on them all for help later.
So Robinson is the safest pick. @ !5. Go the TT way here!

Re: Craig Carton's comments on the Packer - Jets trade where Carton alleged Murphy is the holdup on the trade because he wants more than the Jets are offering.

A Wisconsin State Journal reporter asked Murphy about the Carton allegation yesterday. Murphy ducked the question, only saying he was actively involved in the negotiations and then walked away, denying the reporter any follow-up opportunities. The fact that he didn't deny the allegation gives some credence to Carton's comments. Doesn't confirm Carton's allegation, but Murphy certainly didn't take the opportunity to quash it either.

Murphy screwed up the Denver deal last year, I sure hope he doesn't screw up the Jets deal this year.

Agree, Guam. I was late in learning Murphy opened his trap. By rights the BOD should fire him now so he doesn't mess up our draft.

He should stay out of it, as Bob Harlan would have done.

Acting GM Murphy is a micromanager of the football operation. And he is not very good at it. His hubris is incredibly off putting. Visions of grandeur...the self anointed face of the Green Bay Packers.

Some may enjoy micromanagers. But professional managers? Not many. I expect the members of Acting GMs Football Committee are biding their time, putting up with the dysfunction knowing MM gets the gold watch after 2024.

Until then? SMH

Why is Murphy getting involved in the fist place? He should let Gute do his job and get the deal done. It looks like he thinks he's the one running the football operations and acting like Jerry Jones.

What can possibly go wrong having Murphy involved in the negotiations? Thanks, Since '61

I cry when I dream of what the Pack could have had in a deal with the Broncos last year. What does the dimwit not understand about selling high and buying low. Now he's trying to sell high when the value plummeted. He'll eff this up!

Booted? -
Shit happens. No worries!

You don't say. OBJ -
I do wonder how it would have went 2 years ago if OBJ came to GB instead of LA. Would we have went to the Super Bowl instead of LA?

Whoops! - (not cheating, just answering who I think is crorrect)
3. B. Randy Duncan
4. A. Jim and Jimmy Haslam

Safety Crush -
While this isn't an overly strong S group this year. There are some guys they can get that would be upgrades. Brown is one I think would be.

Team Player -
Jones is smart. Too many players think they are worth more and often end up making less. I believe Jones would have been the same way. Had he decided that he wanted more $ and whatnot, he would have likely made a lot less. Also great having him on the team. He is a true leader and someone younger guys can look up to.

Trivia answers:

3. B Randy Duncan
4. A Jim and Jimmy Haslam

How did you do?
Surprisingly I got them both right. I actually knew the Duncan one. The Haslam I purely used an educated guess lol.

Well, I went 1:1 in short trivia. But, pure luck. As I'm probably one with the shortest history being Packers fan among posters, it is good result, IMHO.

As many here I was searching through my posts trying to find out why CHTV booted me and when I didn't found any specificaly I sent e-mail. Only one.

OBJ is another primadona (diva) and, especially in this moment Packers do not need him. Just trying to get trade for the one, would be stupid to bring back another. I admit that OBJ belongs among top quality WR, but I also believe that team chemistry is much more important in securing wins than having another excellent Diva player on board.

Regarding safety issue, I believe Packers will take one, but not in the first 2 rounds. They have few above average safeties on the team, so I do not think using high draft pick on 1 or 2 safeties would be smart. I'm all on securing above average DL and/or OLB. Also, I'm intriguing with Austin Allen, TE, who was brought at the end of the season to Packers. Also, from small sample we saw Joshiah Deguara it looks like he should be pleasent surprise for many fans this season. I expect Packers to draft 1 TE, but not in the 1st round.

Regarding Aaron Jones, what to say more or anything else others didn't say. I agree.

As I already posted, I bought Draft guide and I still did not able to look at it. Had some rush business time. But I will, for sure.

I was searching at the time some Packers pages and CHTV is the one I picked as I found really good articles, analyses and stuff I was able to learn a lot about football. My opinion didn't change despite I look from tome to time to other pages and found that CHTV is in my favour by a lot.

Keep doing what you do. You are and will be the best source for Packers stuff no question about it.

And, not less important you collected really insightful and knowledgeable Packers fans compared to other pages.

Excellent work, Al, Aaron & company!

I was *so* pissed when the Packers drafted Randy Duncan in the first round in 1959. Quit listening to the radio for almost two months. That pick yanked the rug right out from under Joe Francis and Lamar McHan.

I was so pissed when TT drafted Justin Harrell, it was almost as bad as Rich Campbell.

The last HOFer we picked in the 1st round?

James Lofton - 1978.

(Of course that will change 5 years after Rodgers retires, but he'll probably retire a Viking.) ;P

Booted? I was. I sent 3 emails and finally received a one time log in with no explanation...just a link that still locked me out. Luckily, I tried again, and finally was able to change change password and log on.

If CHTV appreciates suggestions from its customers, here's one: Next time when you have system issues at least respond to the sender. A simple: "We received your email and CHTV is having a log on issue. We are working to resolve it. We appreciate your patience and please know this is our issue, not yours."

And Al, having upset customers is never "cool". During the "lockout" I spent more time on AcmePackingCo...and actually enjoyed it.

But thanks for mentioning the issue.

Every time I posted my options on Rodgers leaving the team I was attacked and called love’s agent, etc I still go there from time to time but I love this site much more seems like more true packer fans , carry the G , etc on apc they sometimes love the players more than the team !!! Hope this makes sense keep up the great work guys

APC is better in season and at its best on game day and over the draft. There are still some posters there I look for, but it’s become somewhat swamped with those who are less inclined to think and discuss, just spout, I think. I spend a lot less time there than I once did.

We may not always agree here, but the discourse is better here and there used to be less willingness to tow the team line, though the relative silence on the contribution of LaFleur and Murphy and coaching has lately seemed somewhat deafening, especially given the dead time and known questions.

Still the best place to talk Packers.

A couple of things. Emails to admin at cheeseheadtv don't come to me. I had no problem logging in so I didn't know we had a problem until Saturday night, when a few people who know my email address reached out directly. We then reported the issue to the site developers. At that point, it was a Saturday night and Sunday was Easter. Yet the developers did get it fixed Easter morning, which was much more than I was expecting. We are not a business with support infrastructure to service paying customers (and you are here for free, remember). Plus, we are self-funded, no venture capital, no national network supporting us, etc. so we can only do so much. There are a lot of things we could do better, but we do the best we can.

Sydney Brown has an identicle twin. His name his Chase Brown and he is the running back for U of I and one hell of a player just like his brother. Theyre virtually the same player but on different sides of the ball. Same size, same speed, same difference making abilities. Draft them both. Ive been spamming both of them in virtually every mock draft i do. Would be a perfect replacement for Aaron Jones a year from now. Brown has an eerily similar playstyle to Jones too.

I think Sydney Brown is pretty much just a box S, but he'll be overdrafted due to the weak S class. I wouldn't be surprised if Chase Brown lingers into day 3. I think he's more Jamaal Williams than AJones, but he's a productive kid who could be a real value later. U of I took a lot of tread off his tires last year, though.

You know what else? I’m not even sure what type of safety they value more highly AND how they see the safeties they already have. Do they think they have their “center fielder” in Savage? Do they think they’re set at “box” safety with Moore or Ford? Or, (and it probably is) is it what’s behind door #3?

I remember Randy Duncan who went to Canada instead of the NFL like Bruce Clark did years later because he told Bart Starr he would not play nose tackle and Starr insisted that was his position. Interesting that in the backfield at Iowa with Duncan was a running back named Bob Jeter who Packer fans will remember and another named Willie Fleming and both also went to Canada. Jeter played 2 seasons then came back to the Packers as a defensive back. Fleming was a star running back in the CFL for several seasons. Duncan washed out in the CFL then spent a year in the AFL as as a backup QB with the Dallas Texans in 1961. That was quite an Iowa backfield that won the Rose Bowl.

Safety prospects: Both Brown and his teammate J. Martin are solid run defenders and good tacklers. Martin is more of the hybrid/nickel type. Brown is better suited to deep and is better in zone than man, so that may be of interest to the Packers....The thing about Brown is that he really only excelled in his fifth year; before that, not so much. But in that fifth year, the QB rating against him was only 47, which is pretty damn impressive.

LTR, FTP. Re trading AR. BG is holding firm because he was taken to the cleaners trading Davante. He can't let that happen again. Also, big obstacle to trade is AR's contract, that BG is responsible for. A lot on the line for BG.
As far as getting out of cap hell, what would cap look like next couple of years if Gary was traded instead of extended? Asking for a friend.

I really like Brown in the 3rd round. I think the only way they take a Safety in the 1st 2 rounds is if Branch falls to them in the 2nd. If Brown is selected before they pick in the 3rd, then Robinson will be the choice.

"I didn't want to be greedy. I'm a team player" I've always loved Aaron Jones, but it's really refreshing for someone to state the obvious...How can a team thrive when all of it's money is tied up in 1 or 2 players? I understand that some positions are more critical than others, but no one player can win all by themselves... Kudos to Aaron. I'm not sure there was any dig in there for anyone, but if so, he was sure a class act in how he stated it!

Well said, and very true! Furthermore, the Packers tried to win it all for a number of years when a large chunk of their salary cap allocated to one generational player, & even with his greatness it did not work! Time to move on & to try a different approach.
