Confessions of a Polluted Mindset - Getting Defensive

The Weekly Packers Brain Drain from Jersey Al.

Last Wednesday morning in this column, I touched on the Packers search for a new Defensive Coordinator. Before the day was over, the search was over. In my column, I had described the conundrum we were presumably facing as such: "Matt LaFleur's DC search has brought up some interesting candidates, all of whom except one (Brandon Staley) have never been more than a position coach. This creates a bit of a conundrum in my brain. On the one had, a new fresh face might connect with the players more and bring fresher "modern" ideas and schemes to the table. On the other hand, there is no way to know how they will handle the pressure of calling plays in game situations. That last part scares me..."  I went on to say how I was in favor of hiring a new face. Well, a new face is certainly what we got, but not the kind we necessarily expected.

Hiring a college head coach seemed like a distant possibility at best. A college coach not from a powerhouse football factory school? Never.in a million years. But never say never- Jeff Hafley will now have the task of being "not Joe Barry", which honestly shouldn't be that hard.Just not lining up the DBs five yards past the 1st down marker on third downs would do the trick.

Since it's been a full week since Hafley was hired, it's unlikely I can bring you any insights you haven't already read or heard. so I'll just try to tell you what I like about Jeff Hafley and why.

The #1 thing I like most about Hafley is the coaches he has worked with and for. Kyle Shanahan, Mike Pettine, Robert Saleh, Demeco Ryans, Mike McDaniel, Kevin O'Connell and Greg Schiano to name a few. If he's like the majority of people in the coaching profession, he's learned from and borrowed from coaches he's worked with, and that's a hell of a good group to be influenced by.

He's not Ejiro Evero. Don't get me wrong, Evero would have been a home run hire had Carolina allowed him to interview for Defensive Coordinator jobs. But they limited him to Head Coach interviews only, And this plays into why I wouldn't have wanted Evero - there's a very good chance he moves on after one year and lands a head coach job. I want a DC that is going to stick around for a few years and help this team get back to the Super Bowl.

He's a defensive backs coach at heart. If there's one area of the Packers' defense most in need of fixing, that's surely it.

He won't be a total stranger among the coaches - he's previously been on the same staff as Adam Stenovich and Ryan Downard, who will remain as defensive backs coach under Hafley.

He's been exposed to 3-4 and 4-3 schemes and seems open minded to finding whatever the best fit is for the personnel the Packers currently have and bring in.

He's apparently bringing some "attitude" to the defense room, judging by his hire of Anthony Campanile as linebackers coach. Here's a clip of Campanile reading a Lombardi quote and giving a talk to his team but BEWARE, it's full of f-bombs, so be careful how/where you watch this. You can watch it here.

He's 44, which is a perfect compromise age-wise and experience-wise. He's not a 32 year old guy who has only been a position coach making a huge jump to coordinator status. He's been a coordinator and a head coach, which means he's had to make fast in-game decisions before. You never know if a coach will be able to handle those duties until they have to do it. Hafley has done it.

He also is not an older "experienced" DC who might be a little set in his ways and committed to one specific defensive scheme (he's not Joe Barry).

He's from New Jersey and his new linebackers coach, Anthony Campanile is also a Jersey Boy who comes from a family where the father and sons are all football coaches. No real "why" here, just because...

Hell, If Hafley does just this I'm sold! Well this and he's hiring some NEW coaches. It always seemed a little redundant keeping the same coaches when the Packers went from Barry to Pettine.

Didn't we already do that by keeping Mo Drayton? How did that work out for GB?

finally a lot of emphasis on the defense , switching to a 4 - 3 requires a smart inside linebacker to make it work, don't know if the Packers have that person right now.

I doubt very much that we will see the 4-3-4; I think we're going to see a 4-2-5 most of the time. What we need is another athletic, instinctive guy to pair with Walker. You're not looking for an AJ Hawk; you want to be aggressive with those LBs in this defense.

I'm all-in on drafting Payton Wilson, but I doubt things will fall right for that. I also think James Williams ( S/LB | Miami (FL) 6-5, 215 4.45 ) is a Gute-type pick who could be a real defensive weapon.

We'll see.

Gary, Smith and LVN are all big enough to play DE in the league. Enagbare might be the odd man out at OLB as he is only 258 pounds and might be too small to play DE in a four man front and is not fast enough to shift to one of the two linebacker positions.

The linebacker position will need a remake. Walker is fine, but I don't know if Campbell or McDuffie are fast enough to play linebacker in this defense. You need to be able to go sideline-to-sideline with only two 'backers.

The Packers need safeties, but now they may also need linebackers. The draft just got more interesting.

As far as weights that's not true at all. Buffalo started Leonard Floyd at DE, he weighs 240 lbs. Von Miller is 250. There are a lot of DEs in the league around 250 lbs.

I wouldn't mind seeing Gute trying to trade for Leo Chenal. This season he had a 76.5 PFF grade. We know from college that he was a very good blitzer and run support player. He would hit RBs and they went down hard. Entering the 2024 season he will still only be 23 despite his 3rd year in the league, won't turn 24 until October, so he is 6 months younger than Wilson. AFAIK he also doesn't have an injury list like Wilson has.

Twice, if he keeps both Two picks. They seem to gloss over Badger LBs like Van Ginkle, who is a free agent, Sanborn, T.J.Edwards, Herbig was available as a pass rush guy. I would have bagged Willie Gay over Dillon in 2020. He is also a free agent and the perfect 4-2/3 MLB.

Al said, " I want a DC that is going to stick around for a few years and help this team get back to the Super Bowl."

That's ok, as long as he's on a short leash. In my opinion (which is based on extensive inexperience), they stuck with the last two DCs a little longer than they should have. MLF not bringing in his own DC choice to start with in 19 was a red flag for me. At least we had "continuity".

I like the trend to coaches that have the mean and nasty mindset. This was originally called the "Black and Blue" division and needs to get back to that, especially with the knee biters thinking they're set up for a long window. Leave the "Flower Power" division in the rear-view mirror.

Hearing what Richard Sherman said about it him really eased my mind about this hire. Love Campanile. There was talk about him as a possible DC candidate, so getting him as an LB coach is a bonus. Time will tell if he's a good DC at the NFL level, but I am cautiously optimistic. I feel confident he's not going to be passive like Barry, so that's already a good start.

His evaluation of players is not good. Heck you hear him on Undisputed and he is a bigger 49ers Homer than Skip is a Cowboys Homer. However, I will trust him on what he says about a coach. Remember he played a long time in the league and was around a lot of coaches. As a player in higher levels of competition you know if you have a good coach.

I disagree tundra. I would agree with anyone that Sherman is a major tool, but he is also one of the best NFL D-backs ever. He has no reason to compliment anyone and he usually doesn't. That is why I look at his evaluation of Hafley as being genuine and important because DBs were a huge weak spot on our defense last year. And that is a Hafley strength so DB play should really improve which helps the whole defense improve. Also the run defense has no place to go but up too. At least there is talent to work with there. The draft and a good FA Safety will fix the secondary too.

Hadley is wait and see for us. We need to give him a chance. First test will be how the players respond to him, especially the veterans. Next will be to observe his defensive philosophy based on the schemes he employs. Third will be to see if his defensive is an aggressive/attacking defense versus a passive /reactive defense that we have seen over the last several seasons with Pettine and Barry.

Any assistants the Harley hires will begn to give us some clues as to which direction he will take the Packers defense. Hopefully he will implement a defense that provides a balance on stopping the run and the pass versus a focus on preventing the big pass play.

It may take a season or two for Hafley's defense to be fully understood and confidently executed by the players. All of which continues to point to 2025 as the season whenmthe Packers returns to SB contention. One step at a time. First who he hires for position coaches. Next who is drafted for defense in 2024. Third first looks during OTAs and Training camp. It will take time before we begin to see the answers we're looking/hoping for. GPG! Thanks, Since '61

Eliminate a couple of missed tackles and the Pack would have been playing Detroit for the NFCCH. As far as I am concerned, this squad is in the hunt for the gold. Gutedkunst has to hit on a Playmaking safety and get the pluggers at DT and ILB. With the clown show out the door, I have more confidence in the existing players.

You : Gutedkunst has to hit on a Playmaking safety and get the pluggers at DT and ILB.

No- Gute has to hit on the best players for the unit and scheme first.
Of the 3 positions S, DT, ILB. We currently have someone better than they could draft.

The 4 front has Clark and Slayton to plug. A Big NT won't pay but on short yardage.
If the defense does their job. The short yardage won't be the worry.
But the DL has No Reggie White or Whitney Mercilus. I would consider a DE @25. 6-4"?

ILB- - Campbell still can play it. He's a liability in the pass. - ILB @#41 or #58 ?
Still- the packers won't make this a priority.

FS- Will be easier to get later. So it isn't necessary @25.

Yes Gute does have to get us a playmaking Safety early. There are some great choices early in this draft we can get in the 2nd round like Kinchens or Nubin. Cheaper, younger players thru the draft is where you start building Stock. We need good Safety play in any defense we put on the field. It cost us last year for sure. The D-line is fine to start with.

#25 needs to be a plug and play starter at a position of great need. Or trade back where we can still get a great CB and one of the top Safeties. Someone always wants back into the first round for that gotta have player with the extra year of contract. We can fill our needs better in rounds 2, 3, 4, and five.

Yes - A playmaker safety.
But my point was you can get one later too.
That way you get the franchise player @25.
Bishop was considered one of the best safeties in the country.
You also have a few others, with more size and might hold up better.
You also have Trey Taylor who won the Thorpe award and received
great re-views at the east west game.
Trading back takes you out of the 5 year option.

I like Both Utah safeties, Bishop and Sione Vaki. I would still get the bigs in Rd one and early second round for the LT. You know what happened when one of these guys goes down. Love must be Protected. I would move on Bishop in the second if Kinchens is gone early. As we previously conferred, the only move up would be for DeJean and Q. Mitchell. I have zero expectations for Stokes and Valentine is a nickel/dime guy. You need the dominant DT for the 4-2/3 fronts. They have Slaton, add Sweat. I have high regard for Trey Taylor with a later pick as he will be on duty as an USAF Officer to start his career. His cousin is Ed Reed. I would draft him and wait it out...The #25 should follow the Order: QB,LT, WR,CB as value selections.

I like Robinson. Missouri has a bad ass defense with 5-6 going in this draft, but he used a One Pick on Van Ness in '23. Maybe Gutey was anticipating a 4-2 look. Brooks will be a starter in this front and will only get better. He had the sense to bag Wyatt, who had 5.5 sacks last season. The Front needs the big DTs. Slaton with Sweat would create problems for people. Morgan will go to Santa Clara , or K.C as they need the LT. I watched his game over the years and he reminds me of Bhak. As you noted, most of the OTs slotted to Rd One are either RTs, or will be moved to guard. I'm not spending a one pick on a guard.

JB the problem is age.
And a change in defense.
Campbell and P. Smith are Cap cuts. .
Brooks should start somewhere.

How long did it take to replace Daniels?
Wyatt must show he can replace Clark/Slaton.
Can't see him outside in the 4 front.
The BPA is Robinson and at dE.
He stacks the DL in case of injuries.
He has better push than Wyatt./ Sweat.

Wyatt is a three-tech and under DT. I liked him because He has fast feet like Sapp, let him create trouble. Kenny Clark is another DE/DT and get him away from double teams. Age doesn't mean squat, Morgan is 23 years old after missing the back half of the 2022 season, or he would be playing in the NFL as we yap. First team ALL-PAC. He is rated mid 1st to high 2nd round. I am looking for LTs, not RTs , or Guard conversions. He is more mobile than Rhyan who should move into the RG spot. Depth inside in rd three -four., or move Walker inside as he is vulnerable to stunts at LT.

Morgan is projecting into a better Guard
then Lt, according to some things I read Lately.

The biggest problem against the 49ers was Tom going out.
I suggest you look at RTs more than the Lts!

And I always said Wyatt was the wrong fit.

They are crackpots. I watch the Games. The NFL is about footwork on the corners. Speed rushers can spin the biguns. Jones was controlled by Humphrey vs K.C. in the AFCCH. See how Jawann Taylor does vs Bosa? Morgan can move better than Walker for wide-zone, left. Jones had 1.5 sacks vis-a'-vis Wyatt's 5.5 and the guy was under utilized by Barry. Sweat crashes the inside and two guys have to take him on, freeing up Wyatt, Kenny Clark ,Wooten and Karl Brooks who could jell into a Pro Bowl guy if kept as a 4-2 Defensive end.

One part of Hafley's experience that I haven't seen addressed is what exactly his role was at Ohio State. He was co-defensive coordinator, but another guy (Greg Mattison) was defensive coordinator, without the "co" in front of it. Presumably Mattison had the more important role, just judging by their job titles. But maybe not. It's odd to me that I have yet to hear anyone examine Hafley's role in what was his only year coaching for a team that had a really good season. Did he call plays or did he just help with the game planning? Was Ohio State's great defense that year partly attributable to something Hafley did, or was it more Mattison, or did they just have some players who peaked that year?

This question has become less important as I read more about Hafley's defensive approach, which sounds really good. I'm not trying to be negative. I'm sure Matt LaFleur and the Packers know what Hafley did at Ohio State. But I don't know why it's such a mystery to the general public. Maybe there are some Ohio State fans out there who can answer this question.

It will be interesting to see how people feel when teams start hitting us deep with regularity. That hasn't happened under Barry, but it might happen now.
"The grass is always greener/be careful what you wish for."

I like watching aggressive defenses, but I'm patient/calm and willing to suffer the big gouges...we'll see how many of today's fans will be tolerant of them...

EDIT: Downvotes are as I expected. :-D I said I LIKE the idea of an aggressive defense, in fact, I absolutely believe it is the best way to play defense in today's NFL. My comments were about how I expect to hear all kinds of complaining from the fans who wanted to get rid of Barry, as soon as the man-to-man starts getting abused. I hope we get some new guys who can deal with today's 6'4" deep threats; Jaire is great against MOST WRs, but has been beaten often by the big guys (when they have a good QB).

You can have an aggressive D when you only rush (and get pressure) with the front 4-5 (Ravens-9ers). That's the key, an aggressive front that allows the LBs to stop the run and help take away the middle of the field making the DBs better for it.

His aggressiveness is centered on getting/forcing turnovers and tackling. Something we haven't been great at.

I will take an occasional deep pass that gets completed to a a guy that beat the coverage but to allow a team to move the ball down the field by picking apart the zone coverage or running through the defense is hard to watch.

Berry's ideas were not bad his problem was he could not develop a game plan on his own with his staff and he could not make adjustments.

Not sure if we hired the right guy but I do like that we have an opportunity to be a top 10 defense.

We have the DBs to play man and to give the front a chance to get to the QB.

Here is another way of looking at this, if you on occasion get beat deep is that better or worse than the other team scoring by long, ball control drives ( Barry defense) and keeping j love and his high powered offense on the bench ? IMHO I would love Jordan to get as many chances to score as possible . Also if we can as a defense limit the runs by other teams it slows down the game and just maybe we build a defense that can ( sometimes) stop the other team and can start becoming a strength of our team . The j b way is over and I am so glad !!!

In NJ you're taught that a thief breaking in through a window is vulnerable, no matter how briefly, and if you make the mistake of letting them live they will come back to try again so don't do that.

This team needs a killer instinct at its core, no more letting the thief get away with a win in the fourth quarter.

The one move I like is taking the defense to a 4-3. Clark and Wyatt would be maximized in this basic platform. Typically you look for defensive ends that are 6'5 and 300 pounds, but Van Ness and Smith are big enough to handle those spots. Brooks and Wooden should fit in well.

Campbell is likely done with the Packers and the 4-3 will maximize Quay Walkers sideline-to-sideline ability . They will need to find at least one more linebacker this off season besides Duffy who has improved a lot.

The secondary right now is a mess. Jaire is flaky. Stokes might not ever play again for the Packers. They have three safeties, all very young, They need a corner and two safeties. Whether they sign any of the free agents is a question.

So this off season will challenge Gute and staff to come up with some linebackers, corners and safeties. No small task.

...The secondary right now is a mess...

You are right about this and it is disappointing considering how much draft capital has been poured into cornerbacks over the years. Maybe building a better D-line and linebacker corps will reduce the need to overdraft corners.

...Jaire is flaky...

Yeah, I am disappointed in his trajectory. We just get rid of one drama queen only to sprout a new princess. The whole playing game captain and calling the coin toss was so childish and selfish that it defies belief. Either he grows up or he will undermine the team.

I don't see a problem. Savage was hurt.
I'd expect everyone else back.
Campbell is too slow in the pass Defense.
Just find a back-up ILB. Maybe 2.
If this team plays the same way it did to
make the playoffs.
The sky will not fall down on them.

There are some good options in the draft. Usually, ILBs don't get picked super early unless they are big and running low 4.4s. Cooper-Texas will be a 2nd rounder, maybe. Wilson would be great for us. Michigan LB Colson is a keeper and could easily take Campbells spot. Gray blew up at the Senior Bowl. I would be surprised if any of the last 3 went unti the 3rd round, so we should have good choices. Hopper and Bertrand will be later decent picks too.

It's too bad we got so stupid after Campbells one good year. It's almost not worth dumping him for the little bit of savings we would get. Also, the contract is untradeable, especially with his play last year. After 2024 we save a bunch by letting him go.

“The one move I like is taking the defense to a 4-3.”

A lot more is being made of this supposed switch than I think we are likely to see on the field Sundays. Quite a few commentators I respect have made the point: it’s not 1996 anymore. Nickel is really the new “base D”; teams are typically only in their base 3-4-4 or 4-3-4 alignment about 10% of snaps, which averages about 7 times per game. A few snaps in Dime or something else aside, 4-2-5 is the vast majority, regardless of whether you are allegedly a 3-4 or 4-3 defense.

Biggest difference we’re likely to observe is simply whether the edge rushers play with their hand in the dirt or not. All of Gary, Smith and LVN have experience with that, so it should be good either way.

I’d expect a front line of Gary, Wyatt, Clark, and LVN/Preston Smith should be able to generate at least decent pressure. You hear over and over how the best defenses generate consistent pass rush without sending extra bodies. Hopefully it’s GB’s turn to do that!

Brooks and Wooden are DEs. Brooks will win a starting job. P. Smith may be on the trading block, or will be the Designated rusher.

Campanile. F—-in A. Or A+. I don’t know how that plays in the locker room, but I think the fan base is hyped. Patience is not a virtue when it comes to fans, and I’ve been known to form an opinion quickly. That said, we will be able to see which direction the arrow is pointing before too long.

I also was not really on board with hiring Evero if given the chance. With the amount of HC interviews he was doing this year it feels like there is a very good chance he would be gone next year. To me I want to have a guy for a couple of years before they start getting poached.

What I like about Hafley is that he was a HC and from people that I have heard from, all said he had turned the program around. To get a guy that can do that, I have a ton of faith that he can turn our defense around. I have seen a lot of talk about 4-3 vs 3-4. Does it really matter? probably 75% of the time it will be a 4-2-5. What I'm more interested in is how he is going to use the players on the field. It sounds like the DB's are going to be pressing more. That would be great as we have gotten so damn used to seeing CB's 5-10 yards off the ball, down after down. It sounds like the LB's might get to roam around and blitz more. Essentially think of how the 49ers use their LB's.

So far it sounds like they have all the major position coaches filled. These are the positions filled as I have seen on twitter/X.
DL - Jason Rebrovich
Assistant DL - Vince Oghobaase
LB's/Run Game Coordinator - Anthony Campanile
Pass Game Coordinator - Derrick Ansley
DB's - Ryan Downard.

Also I saw that they are bringing in former Packers WR Myles White to be an assistant on offense.

After getting the coaches all figured out next it will be figuring out what players stay and go, and who they need to bring in. We already know they need more DB's, especially Safety's. But will they want a different type of DL? Are they going to want more at ILB. There will be a lot of changes made. I'm looking forward to seeing what those changes are.

I have confidence in the new DC hire for one reason - Matt LaFleur. Coach LaFleur showed me last year that he is a head coach and a good one at that. Once we got rid of our player/GM, Matt took control of the team and made it work. He selected Hafley and opened the door to a rebuild of the defensive coaching staff because he knows what needs to be done. The last pieces will be put in place by Gutekunst. Our GM needs to finally draft a stud safety and add some talent at the linebacker position. Then all will be good in Packerland.

I am excited about getting this new defense. As someone above said, I too don't know how well Campanile's speech works in the locker room. My only concern right now is that I remember back when one of the early Packer coaches came in the guy (can't remember who the coach was) was showing college film to the veterans and lost them quickly. Now, I'm sure that is not going to happen these days, but there are a ton of college coaches on this new staff. I'm hoping that is a good thing as we have a young team, and they may relate better to college type coaches. Fingers crossed. GPG!

I can't help but feel that MLF may be a bit happily surprised about the success of his 'rebuild' year. He has had to defer to Rodgers and likely Murphy for 3-4 years and now he can emerge his own man. This current success is his success, not Rodger's & is likely fueling his more decisive approach. He looks like a man who will fight to protect his new feeling of ownership; so for this reason, I feel confident he will keep everyone in line.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on new Packers DC, Al!

My experience by hiring people is something similar what Packers did this season with defense. I rather hire inexperience personel and teach them the way I want them to work than turn around experienced person habits and baggage he brings in with himself. That is because you rarely find out there experienced guy who looks similarly to what you want as performance and way of performance from your team.

I really do not know much about coaching staff in NFL, even less than in the college level. I heard about few (like Alabama former HC - who was not successful at NFL level, or Chip Kelly who proomised a lot, but lul in NFL). For me the main news about Jeff Hafley was that he was position coach at several NFL franchises. And that he was respected one. If his view of defense is what MLF wants for the team, I'm all in.

Listening and reading about reactions on his hire, it looks to me that he is the very good, if not excellent, choice.

So, Go Pack Go!

I think all the relevant comments about Hadley have been said above. Yes, anybody who is not Barry ie. Soft zones, passive, gets my vote automatically.

As well, it looks like GB finally gets that, with a new DC, must come a staff with the same mindset. No more half measures. Why hire a coach with a certain mindset but have a staff that doesn't/can't execute the same way? I always felt it was the penny-pinching board that determined that keeping the old staff will save a little money? Now, it seems to be going in the right direction.

Hopefully, this organization has figured out that a monster player signing is not the only way to generate fan excitement. The AR12 days are in our rearview mirror. Bring on the team concept once again! GPG

Another Gem Al. Ya I can see the problem you mentioned if we had gotten a top dc coordinator today, HC next season and we start over. Thats' never good.
I'm all in on this guy because he aint Barry. Could we get worse then Barry, I dont think so. For me things are looking up, especially if we can add some young fast talent to that defense. I still think Nixon and Savage are too slow for their postitions and one reason Barry had them playing off for a head start?

They can't catch either. Savage has one of the things a good Safety needs to have. He is/was fast. He can't or won't tackle. He has bad hands. And his pass coverage is average to poor. We can do better for the same money with a solid younger, veteran FA Safety.

I think the "Savage doesn't tackle" narrative should be revisited and fact checked. The 49ers S, Hufanga, had 52 tackles in 10 games last year and missed 3, Savage had 51 in 10 games and missed 8. So that's pretty similar except for Savage missed more.

Let's try the other Safety playing this weekend, Mike Edwards of KC. In 16 games, he had 51 tackles and only missed 5.

On the basis on this very narrow sample of safeties on good defensive teams, it looks like Savage does as much tackling as any of them, but Savage misses a couple of more tackles than they do.

If you are one of the top 16 safeties, earnings-wise, you're making better than $10M/year. Savage is ranked 27th, because we still have him on the books for over $5M.

I think he's at least an average starting safety in this league. There are 64 starting safeties in the NFL , and I'd say he's no lower than 32. He generally doesn't miss games, and he's been a starter on a decent defense for several years. And that's despite an incompetent DC and not much talent around him.

IMO, we should give some serious consideration towards signing Savage, rolling the $5M we owe him into the deal, and we'd have a piece for the next couple of seasons. I can't see a scenario where he wouldn't be one of our Top 9 DBs.

Here is the Packer writer for Bleacher Report's grading today on Savage;

Savage was All-Rookie as a first-round pick in 2019 and had four interceptions and 12 passes defensed in a strong second season. However, his career went into a tailspin. In 10 games (all starts) in 2023, he had zero interceptions and one pass defensed. Yes, one pass defensed. He did have a critical pick-six in the playoff win at Dallas, a first-round pick-worthy combination of instincts, intelligence and athleticism, but dropped a potential pick-six and was at least partially responsible for a long touchdown pass to George Kittle in the playoff loss at Dallas.

About the only thing consistent in his game has been tackling. And by that, we mean bad tackling. His hit-or-miss approach consists of running as fast as possible and throwing his shoulder at the ball-carrier’s legs. He finished seventh on the team with 50 tackles but whiffed on Christian McCaffrey’s long touchdown in the playoffs.

According to PFF, he had 12 misses for a missed-tackle rate of 18.5 percent. Of the 95 safeties to play 300 regular-season snaps on defense, his missed-tackle rate ranked 85th and fell right in line with his career mark of 17.6 percent. PFF charged him with 13-of-16 passing for only 113 yards; his 23.1 coverage snaps per reception ranking 39th.

An excellent teammate, Savage will be headed to free agency.

Grade: D-minus.

This is a subjective evaluation. He's entitled to that. I'm not saying Savage is a Pro Bowler, but he's a solid starter. He misses a few more tackles than the average safety, but that's no reason to just throw him and his experience away.

You know, lots of guys whiffed on Christian McCaffrey last year.

I'm not a big Savage fan, but he is adequate and may be the best the Packers can afford given limited cap means. I also wonder what a different DC might mean for Savage's career. I think Barry misused the press man talents of Alexander, Stokes and Valentine. Maybe he misused Savage as well?

Savage's RAS score was the key to drafting him and his athletic ability is obvious. But, every defensive player has to be able to TACKLE, even when he played better his first 2 years his tackling was poor. When Barry the year before last defended his tackling by saying the league does not allow as much in practice that was the lamest excuse for a player I ever heard. Based on the background of the new DC tackling appears to be one of his basic coaching staples, after 5 years a change of scenery is due for the team and for Savage.
